Although ultraviolet radiation is potentially harmful, it is an important component of terrestrial radiation to which plants have been exposed since invading land. Since then, plants have evolved mechanisms to avoid and repair UV radiation damage. Therefore, it is not surprising that photomorphogenic responses to UV-B and UV-C are often assumed to be adaptations to harmful radiation. Most of the compounds accumulated are directly involved in UV-B and UV-C protection: they are either efficient in filtering excess radiation or in scavenging radicals. Quillworts or Çim Eğreltisi, species of the genus Isoetes L. in Turkey and the Levant, are poorly studied despite extensive floristic studies in the region. The Flora of Turkey lists 4 taxa: Isoetes olympica A.Braun (2n = 22), I. histrix Bory var. histrix (2n = 20), I. subinermis (Bory) Cesca & Peruzzi [=I. histrix Bory var. subinermis Durieu (2n = 22)] and I. duriei Bory (2n = ca. 121). Hard limestone, dolomite, sandstone, and granite constitute, under certain conditions, smooth-faced outcrops in desert areas of SW Asia. This habitat supports the most rare plant species in the desert including most of the desert endemics of Israel, Sinai, and Jordan. The smooth-faced outcrops efficiently contribute runoff water to the rock crevices and events when water is available for plant utilisation take place at a higher frequency than in the other habitats in the desert. Soaproot (Radix Gypsophilae) is an important herbal drug having medicinal and economic importance and has been collected from nature for more than 30 years. The main goal of this study was to determine soaproot yielding plant species in East Anatolia, and their potential in nature. Collected plants were determined by field studies; damage to the environment after collection was observed, and commerce, exportation, domestic utilisation of soaproot, and problems and proposed solutions were examined. To maximize rice quality, it is essential to quantify the various factors that affect milling properties of rice. Rice aging, a process during which rice undergoes a series of chemical and physicochemical changes, affects head rice yield (HRY) and the rate at which HRY changes with degree of milling (DOM). This study examined effects of storage duration (0, 2, and 4 months) and storage temperature (4, 21, and 35°C) on milling properties of ‘Wells’ (long-grain) and ‘Jupiter’ (medium-grain) rice cultivars. Leguminous cover crops have the potential to combat the rising input cost of commercial nitrogen (N) fertilizers. This experiment examines benefits of implementing a leguminous cover and/or companion crop into a corn production system. Legumes biologically fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, adding to the nitrogen content of the soil. In this experiment Austrian winter peas (Pisum arvense) (AWP) were used as the leguminous cover crop and cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) were used as the companion crop. Rice moisture content (MC) must be reduced to approximately 12.5% MC to prevent spoilage during storage. Desiccants may provide an improved method for drying research-scale rice samples. This study investigated the effects of 1) rice mass to be dried, 2) placement method of silica gel packets in rice samples, 3) regeneration and re-use of the packets, 4) drying temperature, and 5) initial MC on the effectiveness of silica gel packets to dry rough rice samples to the desired 12.5% MC. Spiderwort is an herbaceous perennial that arises from a cluster of rather stout overwintering roots. Stems may be solitary or more commonly clumped, and usually grow unbranched, reaching heights up to 40 cm tall. Stems are smooth or bear scattered short hairs. Leaves are 2—5 per stem, attached by means of a leaf sheath that is 13 cm long. Leaf blades are dull green, elongate, ending in a gradually tapered tip, flat or keeled, smooth (without hairs), and 1—3.5 dm long by 0.5—2.5 cm wide. Silene duralii Y. Bağcı sp. nov. from Ermenek-Kazancı (C4: Karaman province) is described and illustrated. It is closely related to S. capillipes Boiss. & Heldr., from which it differs mainly in its hairiness, leaves, and floral features. Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed and the diagnostic key for related Silene L. species, which are widespread in Turkey, is reorganized. The geographical distribution of the new species and other related species were mapped. Notes are also presented on its ecology, and biogeographical and conservation status. Mycorrhiza Between Kobresia Bellardii (All.) Degel And Terfezia Boudieri Chatin, Ali Ammarellou, Hossein Saremi

Desert truffles collected from the Tarom region in Iran were investigated in the laboratory. According to microscopic and macroscopic studies, the species was identified as Terfezia boudieri Chatin. Field and laboratory studies showed that Kobresia bellardii (All.) Degel has ectomycorrhizal associations with Terfezia boudieri in the study area.

Flora Of The Camili Biosphere Reserve Area (Borçka, Artvin, Turkey), Özgür Emi̇nağaoğlu, Hamdi̇ Güray Kutbay, Zafer Cemal Özkan, Arzu Ergül

The vascular flora of the Camili Biosphere Reserve Area (Borçka, Artvin) was studied between 2002 and 2005. In the area under review, 990 taxa belonging to 432 genera and 110 families were identified. Of the 990 taxa, 37 Pteridophytes and 953 Spermatophytes were detected. Spermatophytes also contained 7 Gymnospermae and 946 Angiospermae taxa. The richest 3 families are Compositae with 114 taxa (11.5%), Gramineae with 69 taxa (7.0%), and Leguminosae with 59 taxa (6.0%). The richest genera are Veronica L. and Campanula L. Nutlet Surface Micromorphology Of The Genus Nepeta L. (Lamiaceae) In Turkey, Ayla Kaya, Tuncay Di̇rmenci̇

Nutlet characters within the genus Nepeta L. are of taxonomic significance. In this study, the nutlet morphology of 39 taxa of Turkish Nepeta species was examined using both stereoscopic and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). According to surface ornamentations, 3 main types, smooth, partly smooth, and sculptured, and 7 subtypes, undulate-ridged, cellular, reticulate, protuberance, papillate, verrucate, and tuberculate, were defined and illustrated. In addition, the unknown nutlet features of N. conferta Hedge & Lamond, N. crinita Montbret & Aucher ex Bentham, and N. viscida Boiss. are given for the first time here in detail. Physicochemical Properties And Fungitoxicity Of The Essential Oil Of Citrus Medica L. Against Groundnut Storage Fungi, Emmanuel Peter Essien, Joseph Peter Essien, Basil Nse Ita, Godwin Asukwo Ebong

The in vitro antifungal effect of the essential oil of Citrus medica L. on storage fungi of Arachis hypogea L. stored for 6 months was evaluated using the disc diffusion agar method. The oil exhibited a wide spectrum of fungitoxicity, inhibiting all 14 fungus species tested. Thus, the oil can be exploited as a fumigant against storage fungi for the preservation of stored legume seeds due to its wide range of activity, non-phytotoxicity, and long-term persistence of fungitoxicity.

The plant diversity of southern peninsular India has recently been reduced to a great extent due to anthropogenic disturbance and environmental degradation. Disturbance was the major factor responsible for fragmentation of forest vegetation; as a result of this, there is a preponderance of small patches, some of them still preserved as sacred groves because of strong religious beliefs held by the indigenous people of this region. Isatis L. (Brassicaceae) In Iran: A New Record And A New Synonym, Hamid Moazzeni, Shahin Zarre, Hosein Maroofi

Isatis takhtajanii Avestisian is reported as a new record from western Iran. It is close to I. tinctoria L.; a list of diagnostic differences is provided. A more complete description of I. takhtajanii and a distribution map are given. Isatis koeiei Rech.f. is reduced to a synonym of I. raphanifolia Boiss. Iranian records of I. spectabilis Davis and I. tinctoria subsp. tomentella (Boiss.) Davis are considered to be misidentifications of I. kotschyana Boiss. & Hohen.

Oxytropis glabra (Lam.) DC. (Papilionaceae) and Carex pycnostachya Kar. & Kir. (Cyperaceae) are reported as new records for the flora of Iran. These species occur in wetland habitats sharply embedded in steppic vegetation in the Alborz Mts., N Iran. A morphological comparison between these new records and related species is presented. Habitat features of each species are described. Newly found localities for these 2 species in Iran indicate westward extension of the distribution of these species.

The impact of aluminium (Al) stress on the production of hydrogen peroxide and on the activity of antioxidant enzymes involved in oxidative metabolism, such as ascorbate peroxidase (APX), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT), were studied in seedlings of 2 clover species (Trifolium alexandrinum L. and Medicago sativa L.). A uniform decrease in germination and root elongation were detected as the primary signs of Al injury. A significant increase in hydrogen peroxide content was also related to an increase in Al uptake by the roots of the 2 clover species, especially at relatively highly toxic Al concentrations (2-6 mM) for 7 …

The present study is concerned with the flora of the Kalabak Basin, an area lying to the south-west of the city of Eskişehir that supplies Eskişehir with drinking water. As a result of our evaluation of the plant specimens collected over 3 years (2001 to 2003), 71 families, as well as 575 taxa belonging to 307 genera, were determined to occur in the study area (569 species, 3 subspecies, and 3 varieties). Two of these taxa belong to Pteridophytes, 5 belong to Gymnosperms, and 568 belong to Angiosperms (488 Dicotyledons, 80 Monocotyledons) subdivisions. Private garden plots present a vast area for growing plants for food or enjoyment. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh provides a plant identification and advisory service to the public. This includes a service to advise on plant health problems, which is not advertised. In the past 17 years a moderate number of individuals made use of this service, with an average of 67 enquiries and some 100 specimens per year. The influence of foliar GA_{3} application (0, 10^{-4}, 10^{-5}, or 10^{-6} M) on the responses of Nigella sativa L. to various levels of N fertilisation (0, 176, 264, 352, or 442 mg N pot^{-1}) was analysed through 2 pot experiments conducted at the Department of Botany, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India. The N fed plants showed a significant enhancement of capsule number and seed yield plant^{-1}, and nitrate reductase activity, as well as protein and oil yields plant^{-1}, especially upon application of 352 mg N pot^{-1}.
