Declines in seagrass health and distribution are commonly caused through human induced reductions in the availability of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). These reductions can result from a variety of human-induced perturbations, including channel dredging. The impetus for the research was driven by the broad-scale degradation of the ecologically important southern-Australian endemic seagrass Amphibolis griffithii (Black) den Hartog in Champion Bay, Geraldton, Western Australia. The study investigated the affects of reduced PAR on A. griffithii and identified responses that may be useful in developing management triggers to minimise the impact of PAR limitation events. The town of Bodrum is situated on a peninsula in south-western Turkey in the province of Muğla. The research project on the Useful Plants of the Bodrum Area has been collecting data since October 1999 on the traditional uses of plants for food, medicine, fodder, fuel, handicrafts and other purposes. The information was collected over a two-and-a-half-year period from informants of various ages and background categories in Bodrum and the surrounding villages, with the help of about 25 volunteers. There are many ways to compile a Flora. The Flora of Turkey is a remarkable 10-volume work completed within a quarter-century of its inception. A review of the factors contributing to the Flora's success is provided. The Flora of Turkey is a classical Flora with an additional supplement recently produced by Turkish botanists. Flora Hellenica is another example of a classical Flora. Some aspects of its background and production are briefly mentioned. Conservationists consider the endemic flora of a country needs protection for all time, and an opportunity arose to prepare a three-volume work on the endemic flora of Greece. …

Some morphological and anatomical characteristics of Crocus pallasii Goldb. subsp. turcicus B.Mathew and Crocus cancellatus Herbert subsp. damascenus (Herbert) B.Mathew, which flower in autumn, were investigated. Detailed descriptions of these two taxa of Crocus L., which occur in Şanlıurfa, are provided and their morphological characters are compared with those given in the Flora of Turkey. The specimens were collected from different parts of Şanlıurfa within C7 of the grid system; their habitat and population status were also determined. Their anatomical structure are illustrated.

Field studies were carried out in the Besni district between 2001 and 2002, and macrofungi samples were collected. As a result of laboratory studies, 56 species belonging to 20 families in Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes were identified.

Analyses were carried out to identify boron (B) hyperaccumulating plant species in an actively B- mined area of Kırka, Eskişehir, Turkey. Only 4 plant species, Gypsophila sphaerocephala Fenzl ex Tchihat. var. sphaerocephala (Caryophyllaceae), Gypsophila perfoliata L. (Caryophyllaceae), Puccinellia distans (Jacq.) Parl. subsp. distans (Gramineae) and Elymus elongatus (Host) Runemark subsp. turcicus (McGuire) Melderis (Gramineae), were identified in the highest B- containing sections of the mine. The species were found growing successfully under high total (8900 mg kg^{-1}) and available (277 mg kg^{-1}) soil B concentrations. This study concerns the flora of the northern part of the Emirdağ nountains. According to Davis's grid system, the research area lies in B3 square. Four hundred and ninety-five taxa belonging to 279 genera and 70 families were found after the identification of 754 plant specimens collected from the research area. Forty-seven taxa are new records for the B3 grid square. The rate of endemism is 15.9%. The distribution of taxa within the phytogeographical regions is as follows: Irano-Turanian elements 17.9%, Mediterranean elements 8.8% and Euro-Siberians 5.4%. The floristic characteristics of Beydağı are given and the vascular plant species growing there are documented. Beydağı is situated in the south of Malatya province and is in the Irano-Turanian phytogeographical region. The research was carried out between 1986 and 2000. Two thousand one hundred plant specimens were collected from the area. At the end of the study, 873 vascular plant species (897 taxa, 185 subsp., 112 var.) and 357 genera belonging to 73 families were identified: 140 taxa (16.9%) are endemic to Turkey. This study was based on the macrofungi collected from İzmir province between 1993 and 2002. As a result of field and laboratory studies 55 taxa belonging to 28 families were identified and are presented as a list. Three of these (Geastrum badium Pers., G. fornicatum (Huds.) Hook and Collybia distorta (Fr.) Quél.) are new records for the Turkish macromycota.

This study includes the natural and cultivated plants in the Natural Conservation Area in Yumurtalık Lagoon. In an evalution of 450 herbarium specimens collected from this area in 1997 and 1998, a total of 186 genera and 234 species belonging to 65 families were identified: 223 of the 234 species are natural and 11 are cultivated. Three of the 234 taxa are endemics (1.3%), 26 taxa (11.6%) are Mediterranean elements, 13 taxa (5.8%) are East Mediterranean elements, 6 taxa (2.6%) are Irano-Turanian elements, 5 taxa (2.2%) are Euro-Siberian elements, and 1 taxon (0.4%) is a Hyrcano-Euxine element. Laboratory and greenhouse experiments were conducted to assess the efficacy of Eucalyptus citriodora Hook., Ipomoea carnea Jacq., Cuminum cyminum L., Allium sativum L. and Hyoscyamus muticus L. leaf extracts, and of Streptomyces exfoliatus (Waksman & Curtis) Waksman & Henrici (S) and Trichoderma harzianum Rifai (T) in controlling Botrytis fabae, which causes chocolate spot disease in the faba bean. Altering FA content in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] oil for improved functionality is a research goal of many soybean breeders. Several of the genes that alter palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids are modifier genes with small effects, causing these FA traits to act as quantitative traits. The objective of this study was to identify modifier FA quantitative trait loci (QTL) in soybean. Ecological Species Groups Of South Carolina's Jocassee Gorges, Southern Appalachian Mountains, Scott R. Abella, Victor B. Shelburne
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research
Ecological species groups, consisting of assemblages of co-occurring plant species exhibiting similar environmental affinities, were developed for ground-flora and tree strata in late- successional forests on a 13,000 ha southern Appalachian landscape. We distinguished 11 ground-flora groups that included 50 species and six tree groups comprised of 19 species. Ground-flora groups ranged from a xeric Vaccinium group (including Vaccinium pallidum, Euphorbia corollata, and Piptochaetium avenaceum) to a mesic Rhododendron group (typified by Rhododendron maximum, Mitchella repens, and Hexastylis heterophylla). Accurate prediction of phenological development is important in the winter wheat Triticum aestivum agroecosystem. From a practical perspective, applications of pesticides and fertilizers are carried out at specific phenological stages. In crop-simulation modeling, the prediction of yield components (kernel number and kernel weight) and wheat-grain yield relies on accurate prediction of phenology. Life Strategies And Adaptations In Bryophytes From The Near And Middle East, Harald Kürschner

A review article on life strategies and ecomorphological adaptations (xerothalloid and xeropottioid life syndromes) of bryophytes is given, based on the hitherto known and analysed terrestrial, saxicolous and epiphytic communities of the Near and Middle East. The examples given impressively demonstrate common adaptive trends that arise convergently but independently in unrelated taxa when they evolve under similar habitat conditions. These functional types are important for the establishment, habitat maintenance and dispersal of species and indicate the relationships between site ecology, niche differentiation and species evolution. Their differentiation is a prime example of parallel evolution.

In this study Astragalus L. with bifurcating hairs in sectional levels in Iran are discussed (subgenus Cercidothrix Bunge). This subgenus has more than 800 species in the Old World. Major areas of species endemism for this subgenus occur in Turkey, Iran, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan. Iran, with 158 species, is one of the most important centres of diversity. Leucocercis Bunge is the only endemic section for Iran, although other sections have some species in different countries. For quick and accurate access to information about a flora of a country it is becoming increasingly important to develop databases. Databases developed and provided by international organisations are expensive to use and difficult to maintain without outside help. It is therefore important for developing countries to develop their own plant databases best suited to their requirements. One such example is the Turkish Plant Data Service (TUBIVES), designed by Turkish systematists. This database is described with some samples, and the possibility of creating a South-West Asian Plants Information Service (SWAP-IS) is briefly discussed.

An original database, ASIUM, on Asian Umbelliferae has been compiled at the Moscow State University to include all accepted names and synonyms, principal citations in regional Floras, monographs and critical articles, protologue data and distribution in countries, their regions and provinces. A special option permits the arrangement of synomyms, which can be divided into several homotypic groups. It is also possible to extract information for analysis and comparison, for instance, of species sets from different regions to estimate their similarity. Ambrosia tenuifolia Spreng. (Compositae) is a new addition to the flora of Turkey from Malatya (in the East Anatolia region). The specimens collected from Malatya have different properties from the known diagnostic characteristics of the species. A. tenuifolia is a monoecious plant without glands. Its female capitula are in the axils of the upper leaves in its original description, but some of our specimens have only female capitula (female capitula in terminal racemes and lower parts of the racemes bracteate, but upper parts ebracteate) and there are many glands particularly on the tops of their fruits. Taxonomical And Ecological Investigations On Some Geophytes Growing Around Denizli Province (Turkey), Ali̇ Çeli̇k, Mehmet Çi̇çek, Gürkan Semi̇z, Mustafa Karincali

In this study, the taxonomical and ecological features of some geophytes which grow naturally around Denizli province have been investigated. From this research, which was performed between 1996 and 2000, 31 species belonging to 8 families have been determined. Thirteen soil parameters from 31 localities were analysed in order to establish plant and soil relations. The ecological spectra of the species are considered, comprising 16 species in macchie and phrygana (50%); 1 species in fields (1%); 7 species in high mountains (23%) and 8 species in forests (26%).

This study was carried out on some poisonous macrofungi samples collected from the East Anatolia region. As a result of field and laboratory studies, 36 poisonous taxa belonging to Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes were identified. The identified taxa are given with their distributions, habitat and substrates, collection dates and collectors' numbers. One of the species, Amanita eliae Qúel. (Amanitaceae), is a new record for the poisonous fungi of Turkey.

Four Nepeta L. species endemic to East Anatolia, Nepeta baytopii Hedge & Lamond, N. crinita Montbret & Aucher ex Bentham, N. obtusicrena Boiss. & Kotschy ex Hedge and N. sorgerae Hedge & Lamond, are examined. The areas of these species are quite limited. According to "The Red Book of Turkey" the threatened categories of these species are N. baytopii, EN; N. crinita, EN; N. obtusicrena, LR(cd) and N. sorgerae, Lr(cd).

Pollen Morphology Of Egyptian Malvaceae: An Assessment Of Taxonomic Value, Salah M. El Naggar

The pollen morphological characteristics of 21 species of Egyptian Malvaceae belonging to 10 genera: Abelmoschus Medik., Hibiscus L., Gossypium L., Lagunaria L., Abutilon Mill., Sida L., Malva L., Lavatera L., Alcea L. and Malvaviscus Cav., were investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. The pollens were examined and described in each genus. The results demonstrated that pollen morphological characteristics, principally pollen shape, size, aperture characters and exine sculpture and structure, are taxonomically important. The pollen results are discussed with reference to current systematic treatments of Malvaceae.

The attachment of hairs in sections of Astragalus L. may be either basal or lateral (bifurcate). This study focuses on Astragali with bifurcating hairs in the Old World (subgenus Cercidothrix Bunge). In this study, it appears that the ratio of hair arm length, and hair form and length are usually stable at the sectional level. The proposition of uniting some sections based on morphological characters is confirmed by hair characters; for example, uniting sections Tamias Bunge, Acantherioceras Rech. f. and Pseudoerioceras Ulzijchutag with Erioceras Bunge.
