Revision Of North American Species Of Oxytropis De Candolle (Leguminosae), Stanley L. Welsh

This paper treats 22 species (57 taxa), including one introduced species, that are known to occur within the genus Oxytropis in North America. The genus is described, a key to the species is provided, type information is furnished for each species and for most of the included synonyms, all species are described, and there are keys to infraspecific taxa, distribution maps are presented, and habitat information is given. Illustrations are provided for most of the taxa treated.

Twenty-three entries of grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), including eight inbred lines (five males and three females) and 15 hybrids, were evaluated to determine the proportion of γ, αII, and β-αI-kafirins and their association with contents of crude protein, fat, and starch; protein digestibility; in vitro dry matter disappearance; and seed weight. The male lines included three normal-seeded lines (TX2737, TX435, and P954063) and two large-seeded lines (Eastin1 and PL-1). Although there is growing demand for sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] with white seed and tan plant color, there is limited information on the overall agronomic fitness of sorghum with these characters. A set of experiments was conducted to evaluate the combined effects of plant color and seed color on sorghum germination, emergence, and agronomic performance. Twenty near-isogenic lines with red seed/tan plant (RT), red seed/purple plant (RP), white seed/ tan plant (WT), white seed/purple plant (WP) phenotypes were tested under field and laboratory conditions. Palynological investigations have revealed that the deforestation of Central Anatolia started c. 4000 BP. At present, most of the land is cultivated and only small patches of woodland occur in remote mountain areas. These woodlands are dominated by deciduous oaks ( Quercus L. spp.) or locally by junipers ( Juniperus L. spp.). A pattern of scattered fruit trees, the so-called wild orchards, characterizes the cultivated fields. Another type of arboreal vegetation is found on isolated rock outcrops in the fields. Surveys of the vegetation types show that oaks are uncommon among the fields and on the rock outcrops. By contrast, …

The pollen morphology of 4 species belonging to the 3 genera of the family Resedaceae was investigated using a light microscope and scanning microscope. Pollen grains usually radially symmetrical, isopolar, sub-prolate, rarely prolates pheroidal, tricolpate or tricolporate. Tectum reticulate. However, apertural type and pollen shape are the most significant pollen characters for delimiting the genera. On the basis of apertural types 2 distinct pollen types are recognized, namely, I: Tricolpate-type and II: Tricolporate-type.

Toxic metal contamination of soil, aqueous waste streams and groundwater causes major environmental and human health problems. The most commonly used methods for dealing with heavy metal pollution are still extremely costly. Phytoremediation is the use of plants to extract, sequester and/or detoxify pollutants and is a new and powerful technique for environmental clean-up. Plants are ideal agents for soil and water remediation because of their unique genetic, biochemical and physiological properties. A Study On The Autecology Of Reseda Lutea L. (Resedaceae) Distributed In Western Anatolia, Yunus Doğan

The aim of this study was to determine the autecological characteristics of Reseda lutea L. (Resedaceae) distributed in Western Anatolia. The chemical and physical analysis was carried out on soil and plant samples collected from 54 different localities in Western Anatolia. The results show that the plant generally prefers sandy-loam and sandy-clayey-loam textural soils, with a slightly alkaline or medium alkaline pH. They prefer non-saline, calcareous soils which are poor in potassium and phosphorus, but the nitrogen content of the soils was found to vary greatly. The soil and plant analysis results were evaluated statistically and correlations were established.

Turkish Journal of Botany
Experiments with pea (Pisum sativum L.) cv. Marat) in a phytotron chamber showed that the process of nitrate assimilation in pea organs depends on temperature in the zone of the roots and on the phase of development of the plants. The potential of tissues of different organs for nitrate reduction was compared to the amount of nitrates which they accumalated. A decrease in nitrate reductase activity during certain phases of development is assumed to be related to the process of formation and functioning of nodules.

Using a target-neighborhood approach with six annual dicot species in the Negev Desert of Israel, we tested whether neighborhood biomass constrained the upper limit of plant performance and if the slope of the upper boundary was correlated to species trait means, such as relative growth rate (RGR) and seed mass. Target individuals were measured in early spring and then collected at the onset of the dry season along with all naturally occurring neighbors within a 5-cm radius of the target. Using a minimum of 50 samples for each of the six target species, we found no significant relationships between target …

The Nebraska Natural Heritage Program is responsible for environmental review of state projects, including those on Parks division properties, to determine if they may impact state-listed threatened and endangered species. In addition, the Program maintains a statewide database on natural communities and rare and imperiled species. This information is used to inform conservation decision-making, including land management decisions, with a goal of conserving Nebraska’s flora and fauna, our natural legacy. More than 100 species of aquatic plants grow in Nebraska. Some are entirely submersed for their whole lives, others produce floating leaves and flowers, and still others stand upright, with only their lower stems in water. Examples of these are shown here in this publication.
Vigorous and diverse colonies of aquatic plants are usually a sign of healthy and stable aquatic environments. In fact, the plants themselves stabilize the shorelines, underwater soils, and water chemistry. The flora of Kelkit Valley was investigated between 1990 and 1993. In the vegetation period, a total of 2800 plant specimens were collected. At the end of the study, 1316 species and subspecies and 519 genera belonging to 105 families were established. Of these, 132 taxa are endemic to Turkey and the ratio is 10.03%. The rates of taxa which are included in certain phytogeographical regions are as follows: Irano-Turanian 14.75%, Euro-Siberian 12.69% and Mediterranean 11.40%.

Since our goal was to determine characteristic differences between Bromus richardsonii and B. ciliates, a discriminate analysis (DA), principal components analysis (PCA), multidimensional scaling (MDS), bivariate analysis, and an amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) analysis were undertaken on 93 herbarium specimens and 31 field-collected populations. A cytological survey of B. ciliates, B. richardsonii, and B. mucroglumis confirm previous reports that the first species is diploid (2n = 14) and the latter two are tetraploid (2n = 28). The occurrence of lichens and air pollution in the city of İzmir were investigated according to VDI-Guideline 3799 Part 1. In all, 45 epiphytic lichen species were found in 1092 releves. Different distribution patterns discriminated in the study area were used to evaluate air quality. A predominant part of the city area is heavily polluted; this pollution decreases in green spaces and in the outer zone of the study area. The best air quality values were determined in the southern and western parts of the city zone. A value of 7.3 for the width of the air quality classes shows …

Insertion Of An Antimicrobial Gene Into Agrobacterium And Its Further Use In Transforming Tobacco, Ekrem Gürel

In the present work, we first describe the transfer of a novel gene, designated 5W, into the LBA4404 Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain using pPCV91 plasmid through a triparental mating system. The 5W gene was recently isolated from macadamia, a native nut tree species of Australia, and has been shown to have an antimicrobial effect against certain fungi in vitro. Secondly, this gene was tranferred into tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xhantii) using leaf explants to develop a system which could then be used for transferring this antimicrobial peptide into sunflower cultivars.

In the Ankara-Kızılcahamam Soğuksu National Park,116 taxa of bryophytes were identified by the authors. These belong to 20 families and 42 genera of bryophytes. Of these, 32 taxa are new for the A2 grid-square in the system adopted by Henderson.

The field studies have been carried out to determine the flora of Mount Musa between 1994-1996. Nearly, 1000 plant specimens were collected. After identification of these specimens, total flora has been determinated as 522 taxa at specific and subspecific ranks belonging to 287 genera and 87 families. The largest three families are Fabaceae (67 species), Asteraceae (55 species) and Lamiaceae (45 species). The largest genus is Trifolium L. (14 species) and the second is Vicia L. (11 species). Mount Kısır constitutes the study area; the northern and western parts are within the boundary of the Çıldır district (Ardahan), the southwestern part is within the boundary of Susuz and the eastern and southeastern parts are within the boundary of Arpacay (Kars). This place is the highest part of Northeastern Anatolia (3150 m) and lies within square A9. On Mount Kısır and in its environs, a continental climate prevails. The pollen morphology of 14 species belonging to seven genera viz., Cadaba Forssk., Capparis L., Cleome L., Dipterygium Decaisne, Gynandropsis DC., Maerua Forssk., of the family Capparidaceae, was investigated using a light microscope and scanning microscope. The results confirm the eurypalynous nature of the family. However, palynology is significantly helpful at the specific level. Pollen grains usually radially symmetrical, isopolar, sub-prolate to prolate, generally tricolporate, often tetra-colporate. Tectum generally spinulose, or striate-rugulate, or rugulate-reticulate often sub-psilate.

Heat inactivation of various photosynthetic electron transport reactions were investigated in the presence/absence of glycinebetaine (betaine) in unstacked thylakoid membranes from spinach. The activity of Photosystem II (PS II) is more sensitive to heat than that of Cytochrome bf (cyt.bf) and Photosytem I (PS I) complexes. The data obtained clearly demonstrated the protection of PS II and PS I electron transfer by betaine under high temperatures. The phenomena observed are probably related to the stabilization of the higher-order structures of PS II and PS I by betaine.

The aim of this study is to describe the cut-off borders and the structure of vegetation mosaics of existing plant communities in the area, using traditional flora and vegetation methods and satellite remote sensing (Landsat satellite pictures and Geographical Information System (GIS) data). The results indicate that Pinus nigra L. subsp. pallasiana (Lamb.) Holmboe and Fagus orientalis Lipsky plant communities together with Quercus pubescens Willd. and Quercus cerris L. var. cerris could be differentiated. The algae of Değirmendere River were investigated in the samples collected from different habitats (epipelic, epilithic) in five stations between October 1998 and September 1999. The flora consisted of 74 taxa belonging to Bacillariophyta (52), Chlorophyta (10), Cyanophyta (9) and Euglenophyta (3). Bacillariophyta was dominant in the algal flora. Aulacosira varians Ag.
