Studies Of Arundinaria: Experimental Induction Of Flowering And Additional Observation In The Field, Daniel L. Marsh

Arundinaria has been observed for three successive seasons at a site near Amity, Arkansas. In advance of the 1971 flowering period rhizomes were taken from the field, pruned, and placed either in an environmental chamber or in the greenhouse in water or in sandy soil. Flowering occurred under each condition, but was most rapid and profuse in transplants growing in sandy soil in the greenhouse. Observations point to the possibility of induction of flowering or to the possible existence of an annually flowering race. Possible economic uses are considered.

A survey of the vascular flora of Poinsett County, Arkansas was made over a period of 13 months. The fifteen field trips taken were planned to include representative soil associations and geographic areas within the county. Three hundred sixty-three species and varieties from eighty-three families were collected or examined.

ABSTRACT -An analysis of internode lengths in the Hippuris stem is represented by a four phase growth curve, The two parameters which infl~ence this pattern of internode lengths are the number of cells per internode and the length of the individual cells within the internode. In the ontogeny of the Hippuris stem cell length and cell number influence internode length in the distal portion of the stem while in the basal portion of the stem cell number is the major factor affecting internode length. Relation Of Hybridity To The Expression Of Gene Dwarf-1 In Maize Coleoptile Growth, Martin C. Goffinet

ABSTRACT - The plants used in this study were two inbred strains of maize and their hybrid. Each strain segregated for the mendelian gene dwarf-1, approximating a ratio of three normal to one dwarf, with l 00 per cent penetrance. The length of each of fifty coleoptiles per strain was determined at planting and after emergence of the seedlings until maturity of that organ. The dwarf seedlings were compared with their normal sibs within each strain to determine the degree of expression of the mutant gene. Isolation of a phytotoxin from the ring rot pathogen of potatoes, Corynebacterium sepedonicum, had previously been reported by Strobel (21). The first phase in our study was to investigate more extensively the general nature of this compound. The phytotoxin could possibly be a specific compound associated only with the ring rot pathogen. However, the possibility that the substance could be obtained from sources other than the bacterium had not been completely eliminated. Much work has been done on the remarkably diverse flora of California but few specific studies of the foothills of the Central Sierra Nevada Range have been undertaken. One such area is Calaveras County, a region rich in the early history of California.

The site chosen for this study ranges from approximately 2350 to 2700 feet in elevation. It is well defined by survey and accessible at all times of the year. Observations On The Establishment Of Seedlings Of Phoradendron Californicum On Prosopis Juliflora, Richard L. Null

The mistletoe Phoradendron californicum is a common parasite on the mesquite plant Prosopis juliflora. Seeds of the parasite are deposited upon the host plant by birds and perhaps other agents. Normally seedlings of the parasite become established when the elongating radicle of the embryo comes into contact with a host branch and forms a holdfast. From the underside of the holdfast the primary haustorium enters the host tissue and establishes the parasitic union. Later the aerial portion of the parasite develops. Some seeds of P. californicum follow a different sequence; they stimulate the host to produce gum in the tissue …
