Weed Control In Cereals And Pastures Including Declared Plants., J. Peirce, B. J. Rayner Jan 1990

Weed Control In Cereals And Pastures Including Declared Plants., J. Peirce, B. J. Rayner

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial 90C49

Grass and broad leaved weed control in direct sown crops.

Location: Chapman Valley Research Station.

The low rate of sprayseed with diuron was not as effective on the grasses. It may indicate some antagonism within the mix as the same rate of sprayseed with metribuzin did not cause any drop in grass control. The addition of 2, 4-D amine may have boosted the mixes activity on capeweed as the sprayseed metribuzin mix was not very good on capeweed.

Trial 90EB37

Grass and broad leaved weed control in direct sown crops.

Location: East Beverley Annex.

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

1. Assessment of the timing and increasing rates of ethiozin on brome grass control and wheat yield.

Trial 90EC16, 90GE115,

Control of brome grass in wheat using Ethiozin applied immediately before the following seeding and post-emergence.

Location: East Chapman Research Station, Allanooka

Incomplete factorial with three replications.

Unfortunately, further research and development of ethiozin has ceased world wide. It has suggested a result of limited activity on target weeds other than brome grass and economics.

2. Evaluation of pine kraft lignin with metribuzin and their incorporation, on wheat yield and brome grass control.

Trial 90EC18

Trial 88WH47

Control of doublegee in pasture.

Location: Wongan Hills.

To assess the effects of repeated pre-emergence and post - emergence applications of herbicides upon survival and seed production by doublegee. To measure the effects of herbicides upon pasture composition and the sizes of doublegee seed banks.

Trial 89MC2, 89WH7, 89EC1

Simulated invasion by doublegee.

Location: Manjimup, Wongan Hills and East Chapman.

In spite of the significance of weed invasion to the overall problem of weed management, almost nothing is known about factors which influence invasion. The aim of this study was to assess the relative importance of seed number …

Studies On The Giant Mealie Witchweed, Striga Forbesii Benth., In Zimbabwe, David Allen Knepper Oct 1989

Studies On The Giant Mealie Witchweed, Striga Forbesii Benth., In Zimbabwe, David Allen Knepper

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Of the seven species of Striga found in Zimbabwe, S. forbesii Benth. is currently the most destructive in terms of crop damage. Owing to its limited occurrence worldwide as a pest of crops, relatively little work has been done on this species.

Striga forbesii has been found to be a consistent problem on both maize and sorghum in the Hunter's Road District of KweKwe, Zimbabwe. Results of a pot study and field observations, indicate S. forbesii can successfully parasitize Urochloa panicoides Beauv., Sorghum arundinaceum (Desv.) Stapf, and Rottboellia cochinchinensis (L.) L.f., all of which are widespread weeds of arable land. …

Control Take-All And Gain Other Benefits Of Eliminating Grass From Ley Pastures By Chemical Manipulation, W J. Macleod, Gordon Macnish

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Take-all is the most serious root disease of wheat and barley in Western Australia.

The fungus which causes take-all (Gaeumannomyces graminis var tritici) is wide spread throughout the wheatbelt but is most common in the high and medium rainfall regions (400mm to 750mm average annual rainfall, see map).

Elsewhere in the wheatbelt the presence of take-all affected cereal plants and the loss of crop yield may go unnoticed unless the roots of cereal plants are examined in detail.

Rhizoctonia Control In Potatoes And Potato Resistance To Powdery Scab., R M. Floyd

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trials : 88BY26, 88PE34, 88MD35

Control of Rhizoctonia solani infection of potato stems and daughter tubers was demonstrated by preplanting applications of tolclofos-methyl (RIZOLEX TM) to either cut or round seed tubers. Yield of tubers from cut seed treated with Rizolex was increased over that of cut seed cured before planting bu not when seed was cut and planted the same day. Crops grown from round seed treated with Rizolex yielded higher than from untreated round seed.

Surface sterilization of seed tubers with Sodium hypochlorite was effective in reducing stem damage but not in reducing daughter tuber sclerotes. This indicates …

Evaluation Of Fomesafen For Broadleaf Weed Control, In Soybeans (Glycine Max), Ricardo A. Jimenez Nov 1988

Evaluation Of Fomesafen For Broadleaf Weed Control, In Soybeans (Glycine Max), Ricardo A. Jimenez

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The lack of effective broadleaf weed control represents one of the major factors having detrimental effects on growth and yield of soybeans. Broadleaf weeds are a serious threat to soybean growers in the southeastern United States. A broad range of herbicides is being used in an effort to control broadleaf weeds in soybeans, and research is still being conducted to find new herbicides that can best work for this purpose. This study involved the use of one these herbicides. It was fomesafen, 5-[2-chloro-4-trifluromethyl) phenoxy]-N-(methyl-sulfonyl)-2-nitrobenzamide, which controls a broad spectrum of broadleaf weeds in soybeans.

The experiment was conducted in the …

Seed Production And Hard Seededness Of Trifolium Subterraneum Subsp Brachycalycinum, Michael D A Bolland Mar 1988

Seed Production And Hard Seededness Of Trifolium Subterraneum Subsp Brachycalycinum, Michael D A Bolland

Technical Bulletins

Ungrazed swards of some subsp. brachycalycinum strains produced reasonable seed yields compared with subsp. subterraneum on the sandplain soils and annual Medicago species on the alkaline mallee soils. However, in swards which were grazed by sheep up to the start of flowering, subsp. brachycalycinum produced disappointing seed yields compared with subsp. subterraneum and annual Medicago species. On a sandy soil, prevention of burr burial compared with covering developing burrs with sand drastically reduce ation an inhibiting light factor operates to drastically reduce seed production.

Trial 88PE27 - University Field Station, Shenton Park
Trial 88WH43 - Wongan Hills Research Station.

The project aims to develop, by breeding and selection, better adapted and more productive low-oestrogen cultivars of subterranean clover for a range of environments in southern Australia. The programme is a collaborative one with the University of Western Australia and consists of two phases (i) early generation selection, which involves selecting varieties satisfying primary selection criteria; and (ii) field evaluation of advanced lines, which is conducted by the Departments of Agriculture in each State and co-ordinated by the Plant Breeder. The first phase is conducted …
