Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy. Weeds Target List, B. M. Waterhouse, A A. Mitchell
Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy. Weeds Target List, B. M. Waterhouse, A A. Mitchell
Biosecurity published reports
Second edition.
The Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy (NAQS) was established in 1989 as an outcome of a major evaluation of quarantine in Australia (AGPS 1987, 1988). NAQS activities include surveying for weeds, insect pests and diseases of plants; and pests and diseases of animals in northern Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The primary goal is to provide early detection and warning of new quarantine threats or incursions.
A targetted approach was adopted for all pests, diseases and weeds. For each category of pest, experts in the discipline compiled lists of organisms not known from Australia but known to occur in …

Analysis Of Spatial Distribution Of Canada Thistle (Cirsium Arvense) In Notill Soybean (Glycine Max), B. L. Broulik, J. Lems, S. A. Clay, D. E. Clay, M. M. Ellsbury
Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications
The nonuniform spatial distribution of weeds across a field landscape complicates sampling and modeling, but allows site specific rather than broadcast management of weed populations. Where weeds are aggregated, densities measured at random locations are not independent, but rather spatially related or autocorrelated. Geostatistical methods were used to describe and map nonrandom distribution and variation of shoot density across ten well established patches of Canada thistle, a perennial weed, in a 65 hectare notillage soybean field in Moody county, South Dakota in 1996. Canada thistle densities were determined by counting the number of shoots present in a 20 by 50 …

Atrazine And Alachlor Adsorption Characteristics To Benchmark Soil Series In Eastern South Dakota, Z. Liu, S. A. Clay, J. Gaffney, D. Malo
Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications
Corn, grain sorghum, and soybean are grown on about six million acres in eastern South Dakota each year. Two herbicides used routinely for weed control are atrazine(6-chloro-N-ethyl-N’-(1-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) in corn and grain sorghum and alachlor (2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide) in all three crops. Six benchmark soil series that include a majority of the cropped acres treated with these herbicides are the Egan, Moody, Nora, and Brandt silty clay loams, and Clarno and Enet loams. Batch adsorption studies determined atrazine and alachlor binding characteristics to these soils and aids in assessing the amount of herbicide available for movement. These data also provide a basis for …
Skeleton Weed : The Current Situation, Peter Scott, Jon Dodd
Skeleton Weed : The Current Situation, Peter Scott, Jon Dodd
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Skeleton weed is a major threat to western Australia's grain industry. This weed established itself throughout the entire eastern States wheatbelt in just over 50 years and is now found from south-east Queensland to South Australia. It was first founs in Western Australia at Ballidu in 1963, and since that time has been the subject of an ongoing and intensive eradication campaign. Peter Scott and Jon Dodd report on the present status of skeleton weed in Western Australia and outline the progress to date and future directions of the eradication campaign.
Weeds Can Poison Crops, Aik Hock Cheam
Weeds Can Poison Crops, Aik Hock Cheam
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Weeds can interfere with the growth of a crop simply by competing with the crop for nutrients, moisture and light. But some weeds also release chemicals that inhibit the germination and growth of crop plants; the technical term for this is allelopathy. Aik Cheam outlines the problems caused by two common weeds and the discusses preventative measures.

Canola essentials:
Site selection -Paddock selection is critical for a successful canola crop. Avoid paddocks with waterlogging, wind erosion and broadleaf weeds - particularly wild radish, turnip, mustard and doublegees.
Soil type - Canela grows well on most soil types, however it prefers well drained gravel soils, red loams, sandy _loams and deeper duplex soils. Soil pH levels (in CaCl2) of 4.5 to 8.0 are suitable. Soil test paddock for pH, phosphorus, and potassium levels.
Rotation - Grow canola after manipulated pasture, lupins or other grain …
Delaying The Development Of Herbicide Resistant Ryegrass By Using Alternative Weed Control Strategies, A. J. Diggle, G. S. Gill, J. E. Holmes
Delaying The Development Of Herbicide Resistant Ryegrass By Using Alternative Weed Control Strategies, A. J. Diggle, G. S. Gill, J. E. Holmes
Biosecurity published reports
Alternative strategies to control ryegrass in wheat lupin rotations are worth approximately 15 dollars per hectare for each 50% reduction achieved in plant or seed numbers. This figure has been calculated for circumstances similar to those found at Wongan Hills, and it holds in all cases where ryegrass is still under control using standard herbicides.
Farmers should adopt any ryegrass strategy in addition to that normally practised, so long as the cost to control ratio is less than $15/ha/50% kill. This applies even where good control is being achieved using grass selective herbicides, regardless of the number of previous applications …

Crops In The Woolbelt : Current Options And Emerging Prospects, Wal Anderson, Ross Gilmour, Robyn Mclean, Peter Nelson, K H.M Siddique, Paul Carmody, Ian Prtichard
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
It has traditionally been more profitable to grow sheep for wool in the medium rainfall parts of the south-west of Western Australia than to grow crops . Crop production has been difficult owing to the hilly terrain, the frequency of waterlogging, the high incidence of damaging frosts in some areas, the frequency of losses from diseases, difficulties with wet weather at harvest, and a lack of adapted crop varieties.
Advances over the past decade have made cropping on a limited scale potentially profitable in the woo/belt.
This article is intended to bring the various options for crop production to the …

Agriculture reports
This workshop grew out of a conversation between Maurice Barnes, a Trayning farmer and member of the Research Advisory Committee of the Dryland Research Institute, and Steve Porritt, the officer in charge of the Dryland Research Institute at Merredin. Maurice was interested in the idea of posing the question 'What would agriculture be like if we had known as much about this landscape in 1829 as we know now?', to a group of farmers and others interested in the central wheatbelt and its future. Maurice saw this question as a first step toward achieving some shared vision for the future …

Herbicide Trials On Field Crops 1991, Robert Frans, Marilyn Mcclelland, David Jordan
Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series
Herbicidal weed control is economically important for production of field crops. Field experiments are conducted annually in Arkansas to evaluate the activity of developmental ancommercial herbicides for selective control of weeds in several important crops. These experiments serve both industry and Arkansas agriculture by providing information on the selectivity of herbicides still in the developmental stage and by comparing the activity of these new herbicides with that of recommended herbicides.

Managing Brome Grass In The Wheat:Lupin Rotation, Aik Hock Cheam, Gurget Gil, Christine Zaicou
Managing Brome Grass In The Wheat:Lupin Rotation, Aik Hock Cheam, Gurget Gil, Christine Zaicou
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Some farmers and scientists are questioning the sustainability of the cereal:lupin rotation in the Western Australian wheatbelt.
Being a 'tight' rotation, its continuation is constantly under threat by disease, especially lupin root rots caused by Pleiochaeta (the brown spot organism) and Rhizoctonia fungi. To control disease, some farmers have lengthened the rotation to three years, such as wheat:wheat:lupins or wheat:barley:lupins. The longer cereal phase also helps to stabilise soil against wind erosion. However, such rotations can lead to a rapid buildup of brome grass during the two consecutive years of cereals. The implications of these rotations on the severity of …
