During cruise "La Bocaina 0497" a series of 14 tows with a commercial pelagic trawl at depths between 20 and 700 m and an acoustic survey with a SIMRAD EK-500 echosounder were carried out in neritic and adjacent oceanic waters off Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria, Canary islands. In addition, SST images were obtained to get some informations on the prevailing hydrological conditions in the study area.
Of the 14 trawl tows ten were successful and resulted in capture of a total of 2166 fishes belonging to 81 species, 53 genera and 28 families. Ten species proved to be new …

The spectacular coastlines along Egypt's Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba are the focus for one of the fastest growing tourism economies in the world. In order to accomplish national objectives for growth in permanent, well-paying jobs and in foreign exchange earnings, the Tourism Development Authority (TDA) has launched an initiative to make land available to investors for resort development along these coastlines. As of December, 1997, 6,000 hotel rooms are under construction in the Red Sea region and the TDA has proposals for at least 240 major resorts to be built by the year 2020.

Monitoring of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in the vicinity of Port Everglades Southport began in September 1988 in anticipation of dredging of the Southport Turning Notch and concomitant mitigation of mangrove habitats at adjacent areas of John U. Lloyd State Recreation Area. Twice-yearly surveys were carried out from September 1988 to January 1991 by Sheldon Dobkin (Florida Atlantic University), and subsequently, from August 1991 to January 1997, under the supervision of Charles G. Messing and Richard E. Dodge (Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center). From 1990 onward, surveyed sites consisted of 11 Ponar grab stations, 11 mangrove crab census stations, and three …

Isotope Ratio Studies Of Marine Mammals In Prince William Sound, Donald M. Schell, Amy Hirons
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
This project consists of two components: (1) provision of analytical services for the stable isotope ratio investigations associated with Exxon Valdez oil spill projects, and (2) an investigation of food web relationships and trophic interactions of harbor seals and other top consumers of Prince William Sound (PWS). Through the use of harbor seal tissues collected from native harvested animals and tagging programs, seasonal and migrational information has been obtained with regard to prey utilization and trophic status at differing locations within the sound and the adjacent Gulf of Alaska. Preliminary results indicate that within PWS, harbor seals fall at the …

This annotated check-list deals with the scleractinian coral family Faviidae in subtropical south-east Africa (the African mainland coast south of the Tropic of Capricorn). Material from the atoll Bassas da India in the Mozambique channel was included. Most species are of wide Indo-Pacific distribution. The faviid fauna of Mozambique was richer (28 species) than the South African fauna (21 species). The fauna of Bassas da India was similar to that on the African mainland coast with four additional species. South-east Africa has a moderately rich faviid fauna compared with other areas in the Indo-Pacific region. Field and laboratory characteristics are …

Final Report Biological Monitoring Of The Hollywood-Hallandale Beach Renourishment, Richard Dodge, Walter Goldberg, Charles Messing, Steven C. Hess
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
A four-year study was undertaken to survey Broward County, Florida (southeast Florida) coral communities and infaunal marine biota in relation to possible effects from the Hollywood- Hallandale Beach renourishment project. Beach restoration involves dredging sand from offshore deposits and placing it on eroded beaches, activities which may cause sedimentation and turbidity. Coral reefs were assessed using transect and quadrat surveys at a total of 15 stations, unevenly distributed between dredging impact (n=9) and control (n=6) areas to characterize and quantify populations of sponges, gorgonians, scleractinian corals, as well as other less well represented groups. In addition, the infauna of sand …

Evaluation Of A Novel Material For Recycling Tires Into Artificial Reefs - Final Report, Richard E. Spieler
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
The purpose of this study was to evaluate, from a biological perspective, a tire-concrete aggregate which uses tire shreds mixed into concrete, as a suitable reef building material. Evaluation consisted of comparing the biological assemblages associated with tire-aggregate reefs to standard gravel-concrete reefs of the same design. Four artificial reefs of concrete, tetrahedron modules were placed off Fort Lauderdale, Florida in seven meters of water, two reefs of each type of aggregate. Each reef contains 25 small (1m/side) and 25 large (1.3m/side) tetrahedrons stacked in a random configuration. The reefs were monitored at monthly, or less, intervals for 28 months. …

Four artificial reefs were placed off Broward County in 20 ft of water on 29 March 1993. The reefs were constructed of concrete aggregate tetrahedrons. Each reef contains 25 small ( 3ft/side) and 25 large (4 ft/side) tetrahedrons in a random configuration. Two types of concrete aggregate were used . One is a tire-concrete aggregate which uses tire shreds mixed into the concrete; the other is a standard gravel-concrete aggregate. Two reefs are composed of each type of aggregate . The benefits of the inland retention of freshwaters in South Florida are indisputable. During periods of prolonged drought, the maintenance of a higher groundwater table, which benefits terrestrial vegetation and retards saltwater intrusion, is clearly preferable to the alternative of discharging up to 400,000 gallons of freshwater per day into the ocean.
Therefore, the only objections to the retention of treated sewage effluent in an inland lime-rock pit, with the physical, chemical and biologic characteristics of our pits, would have to do with possible detrimental effects to public health or the environment. The major public health concern involves the possible …
