In 1987, Nova University (Contractor) with ERM South (Subcontractor) was awarded a contract to provide biological monitoring services for the John U Lloyd State Recreation Area Beach Renourishment Project. A notice to proceed for the initial biological monitoring (Phase I - Preconstruction) was issued in February, 1989. Phase I preconstruction field monitoring took place in February and March, 1989. Phase II post-construction field work took place in August and Spetember, 1989. Phase III post-construction field monitoring took place in August, 1990. Laboratory work occurred from March, 1989 to January, 1991. Renourishment dredging took place from May 16, 1989 to July …

In 1990, Nova University (Contractor) with Coral Reef Associates and ERM South (Subcontractors) was awarded a contract to provide biological monitoring services for the Hollywood Hallandale Beach Renourishment Project. A notice to proceed for the initial biological monitoring (Preconstruction) was issued in August, 1990. Preconstruction field monitoring took place in October, 1990. Laboratory work was begun at the start of 1991 following the analysis of samples from the previous John U. Lloyd beach renourishment monitoring. Renourishment dredging is tentatively scheduled to take place starting in April or May, 1991. Sediment is scheduled to be removed and subsequently placed on the …

Marine Flora And Fauna Of The Northeastern United States Echinodermata: Crinoidea, Charles G. Messing, John H. Dearborn
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
The crinoid fauna of the continental margin (0-1500m) of northeastern North America (Georgia to Canada) includes 14 species in 13 genera and 5 families. We introduce the external morphology and natural history of crinoids and include a glossary of terms, an illustrated key to local taxa, annotated systematic list, and an index. The fauna includes 2 species found no further south than New England and 8 that occur no further north than the Carolinas and Blake Plateau. Comactinia meridionalis (Agassiz) is the only species commonly found in shallow water (<50 m). No taxa are endemic to the area.

Analysis Of Benthic Macroinvertebrate Assemblages Birch Landings, Fort Lauderdale, Fl, Charles G. Messing
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
Quantitative analysis of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in the Intracoastal Waterway in an area of proposed dredge and fill adjacent to existing sea wall at Birch Landings, Fort Lauderdale, FL (Broward County) reveals a community dominated by a small number of annelid worm species typical of stressed, high organic content, moderately reduced salinity, estuarine and canal habitats found along much of coastal south Florida. It is concluded that the proposed construction will impact no unique assemblage of organisms nor affect significantly the population resources of any macroinvertebrate species.

Sea Turtle Conservation Program, Broward County, Fl 1990 Report, Curtis M. Burney, Catherine A. Mattison
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
Since 1978, the Broward County Environmental Protection Department (BCEPD) has provided for the conservation of endangered and threatened sea turtle species within its area of responsibility. Broward County is within the normal nesting areas of three species of sea turtles: the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The loggerhead is listed as a threatened species, while the green and leatherback are listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, 1973, and Chapter 370, F.S.
Since these statutes strictly forbid any disturbance …

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the application of dispersant to spilled oil as a means of reducing adverse environmental effects of oil spills in nearshore, tropical waters. The results of numerous laboratory and field studies have suggested that dispersants may play a useful role in reducing adverse impacts on sensitive and valued environments such as mangroves, seagrasses, and corals. However, the use of dispersants has not been allowed thus far in most situations because of a lack of direct experimental data on the various effects of dispersants and the environmental trade-offs presumed to occur as a …

The skeletal growth of hermatypic (reef-building) corals is a sensitive indicator of environmental conditions and perturbations. In particular, excessive sedimentation and turbidity act to depress coral growth because energy expenditure is required to remove sediment and because turbidity reduces light energy necessary for coral health and nutrition.
Normalized annual growth (linear skeletal extension) rates of Broward County, Florida reef-building corals were over 16 years (1985-1970). Star corals (Montastrea annularis) and brain corals (Diploria labyrinthiformis) were collected from each of four reef sites at two depths (9m and 18m). Collection areas were located in the vicinity of …

This bibliography was compiled as an outgrowth of the Satellite Surface Stress (S3) Working Group, which was sponsored by NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center and NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) from the fall of 1982 to the spring of 1984 (Contracts NAS5-26714 and 956773). I wish to thank the Working Group Chairman, Dr. James J. O'Brien, for providing me with the impetus to compile this work. I also wish to thank the other members of the Working Group for adding their moral support (as well as many of the references).

Seasat Altimetry Adjustment Model Including Tidal And Other Sea Surface Effects, Georges Blaha
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
This study is a part of the on-going effort aimed at improved determinations of the earth's gravity field through the adjustment of satellite altimeter data in the short-arc mode. Until recently the key role in such adjustments has been played by GEOS-3 altimeter data. However, SEASAT altimetry is envisioned as providing a more accurate means for addressing this task.
In view of the improved quality of altimeter data and of the corresponding more stringent requirements for the data reduction, several improvements in the existing altimetry model have been designed and are described herein. For example, the criteria have been established …
