Two Year Survival And Growth Of Loblolly Pine Seedlings From Two Texas Seed Sources On Lignite Minesoils, Gerald Allen Wood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Loblolly pine seedlings from Lost Pines (drought-hardy) and East Texas (regular) seed sources were planted in lignite minesoils in Panola County, Texas. Heights, root-collar diameters, and survival were monitored for two years. Treatments included application of Pisolithus tinctorius basidiospores immediately after planting and use of acephate for tip moth control during the second growing season. Standard foliar analyses were conducted at the end of the second growing season. East Texas seedlings grew more in height and root-collar diameter, and had higher survival percentages than Lost Pines. No growth response from treatment with P. tinctorius was observed. Treatment with acephate resulted …

Drought-Tolerance Comparison Of Aleppo Pine And Brutia Pine Seedlings, Mohammad S. Abido May 1982

Drought-Tolerance Comparison Of Aleppo Pine And Brutia Pine Seedlings, Mohammad S. Abido

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seedlings of Pinus halepensis and P. brutia were grown from seeds in a greenhouse. When 6 months old, randomly sampled seedlings were subjected to water stress by withholding irrigation. During this period, foliage and root characteristics of seedlings not under moisture stress were recorded. Pinus halepensis showed the greater ability to endure moisture stress and to maintain a higher level of needle-moisture content during the dry-down period. Meanwhile, P. brutia showed important anatomical and morphological adaptations which enable the species to conserve moisture.

Effects Of Site Preparation On Survival And Growth Of Planted Loblolly Pine, John Gorham Dec 1981

Effects Of Site Preparation On Survival And Growth Of Planted Loblolly Pine, John Gorham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Effects of site preparation on survival and growth of planted loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) on a loblolly-shortleaf pine-hardwood forest site in East Texas are examined by determining the survival and growth of planted loblolly pine, soil chemical characteristics, and density and height of competing (non-pine) woody stems. Three replications of four site preparation treatments (control, burn, chop, KG blade) resulted in the KG bladed plots having the highest survival, height, and diameter, but the lowest nutrient levels while, also, most effectively controlling competing vegetation. This tends to indicate that the advantages in the initial survival and growth on the …

Bedding As A Factor In The Survival And Total Height Of Two Year Old Planted Loblolly Pine Seedlings In East Texas, Edgar Wilkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With an ever increasing demand placed on wood fiber supply by industry, it has become imperative that every feasible means be pursued which will increase the wood fiber production per acre of land on every plantsble site. With this in mind, this study was conducted in an attempt to determine the effect of bedding in intensive site preparation on the total height and survival of two year old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda, L.) seedlings planted on bottomland and upland sites. Forty row (or lineal) plots 100 feet long were established on machine planted areas on bedded and unbedded, bottomland and …

Comparison Of Three Mass Media For Communicating Forestry Information For Young People, Ross Lee Tomlin Aug 1980

Comparison Of Three Mass Media For Communicating Forestry Information For Young People, Ross Lee Tomlin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A comparison of three mass media ( TV, radio and newspaper) was made to find which would be more effective at communicating forestry information to young people. The field study was conducted at Nacogdoches, Lufkin, and Kilgore High Schools in East Texas. Questionnaires given to students before and after exposure to six media spots tested forestry knowledge and attitudes. One spot in each medium presented a hardsell threat approach, the other a softsell-humorous approach. A final questionnaire measured student preferences of the media. Analysis of data indicated newspaper and TV to be the most effective media, with radio less effective. …

Pisolithus Tinctorius Mycobiont Inoculations As A Factor In Performance Of Containerized And Bare-Root Shortleaf Pine Seedlings On Lignite Minesoils In Panola County, Texas, Hoy Lee Bryson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effects of artificial soil infestation with basidiospores and vegetative mycelia of the fungal symbiont Pisolithus tinctorius on ectomycorrhizae development of short leaf pine (Pinus echinata) seedlings grown in styroblock containers were tested in the greenhouse. These preliminary tests showed that both spores and mycelia will produce satisfactory ectomycorrhizae development. Various methods of inoculation had little effect on growth and development of containerized seedlings or on the accumulation of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Mn, Zn, or Cu in foliage and lateral roots. The styroblock containerization system used in conjunction with sandy loam soil/vermiculite (2:1 v/v) potting-mix produced excellent …

Zinc Uptake In Loblolly Pine Seedlings, Victor Zillmer Aug 1978

Zinc Uptake In Loblolly Pine Seedlings, Victor Zillmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Zinc concentrations in the root, terminal growth, stem, and needles of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) were measured in 72 seedlings grown in washed sand, fertilized with Zn(N03)2. Zinc treatment periods were early spring, late spring, and summer. Zinc uptake was the greatest in early spring. Zinc nitrate fertilizer and remaining soil zinc at treatments end had no effect on mycorrhizae, height, or diameter growth. Linear and multiple regressions were derived using residual soil zinc and treatment zinc that can predict zinc concentrations in different plant parts that have r values from .7440 to .8170. Linear regressions for the prediction …

Key To The Wood-Decaying Polyporaceae Of The East Texas Region, Steve Bishop, W. T. Mcgrath Jan 1978

Key To The Wood-Decaying Polyporaceae Of The East Texas Region, Steve Bishop, W. T. Mcgrath

eBooks

The family includes those pore fungi whose fruiting bodies are tough, leathery or woody and whose pore layer usually cannot be separated easily from the context. The pores on the undersurface are only exterior openings of tubes bearing spores and in each species these tube mouths, or pores, are a definite shape and size. Occasionally pore walls will break up giving the appearance of teeth or gills. Fruiting bodies can be sessile, stemmed, effused-reflexed or resupinate (Fig . 2). Members of the family can be either perennial or annual, with the annual species growing during the summer and maturing that …

The Age And Fertility Of Lignite Strip Mine Spoils From The Darco Mine, Harrison County, Texas, Reagan Cook Dec 1977

The Age And Fertility Of Lignite Strip Mine Spoils From The Darco Mine, Harrison County, Texas, Reagan Cook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Field observation of lignite strip mine spoils from the Darco mine near Marshall, Texas, revealed that gray spoil materials of various ages were devoid of vegetation. Within the same sites, spoil materials which were non-gray supported several conditions of revegetation. Analysis of spoil materials from this mine was undertaken to determine if spoils were differentiated on a chemical basis. Gray materials appear to have greater mineral sources of zinc, iron, and sulfate than non-gray spoils, and greater concentrations of zinc, calcium, magnesium, and potassium at all sites. Further, older spoils (17 to 31 years of age) have mean pH values …

Use Of Lignite Fly Ash As A Soil Amendment, Thomas Victor Brown Dec 1977

Use Of Lignite Fly Ash As A Soil Amendment, Thomas Victor Brown

Aspects Of Some Compacted Campground Ameliorating Practices, Keith Foster Dec 1976

Aspects Of Some Compacted Campground Ameliorating Practices, Keith Foster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if the direct mechanical manipulation of compacted campground soils, with and without the addition of organic materials and the planting of grasses, had any long lasting effect on the amelioration of these deteriorated campsites. An attempt was also made to determine the natural recovery time for East Texas sandy loam soils using the campground closure method. Closure or partial (seasonal) closure of campsites reduced compaction to an acceptable level in three years. Roto-tilling alone was the least effective treatment. Roto-tilling and the addition of bark or chips to maintain the loose soil …
