Recliner Sales Potential, Eric J. Todd, Steven H. Bullard

Over 19 percent of the 93 million households in the United States plan to purchase at least one recliner within the next 5 years. A recent survey of over 2,000 households also found that many expect to purchase more than one recliner, and combining the estimates yields a potential sales total of 22 million. This compares to an estimated total current ownership of 65 million recliners, and indicates clearly that nationwide the recliner market is very far from being "saturated" in the near future.

A Least Cost Analysis Of Transition In North America’S Upholstered, Wood Household Furniture Industry, Eric J. Todd, Steven H. Bullard

Factors influencing the location of the North American upholstered, wood household furniture industry are undergoing many changes. This paper presents a least cost linear programming approach to determining optimal furniture production and shipment patterns, The results suggest that Mexico and the 'East South Central region of the U.S. are well-poised to increase their shares of the North American market as consumption patterns and factors of production change in the next decade.

Age is highly related to income. lifestyle and other critical factors in consumer behavior. In a recent survey of over 2.000 U.S. households. age proved to be the most important determinant of up· holstered furniture purchasing plans. Consumers less than 45 years old. for example. are more than three times more likely to plan purchases of upholstered household furniture than those 65 and older.

Farmers are using niche seeders to direct-seed saltbushes (Atriplex spp.) cheaply on large areas of salt affected land. While many factors influence successful establishment of these shrubs, fanners can control the quality of the seed they use. Too often, the lack of knowledge of saltbush seed quality has resulted in extremely poor establishment. The importance of seed quality is well recognized in the establishment of grain crops and pastures, but it is often overlooked when farmers buy or select seed of saltbush. Damage to property from deer hunters, though usually not discovered immediately, is a problem for many Arkansans. A questionnaire survey was mailed to 3,773 rural landowners in Arkansas to determine the type and cost of damage suffered from hunters. Thirty-five percent reported minor problems, and 15% reported severe damage from hunters. The most common problems caused by hunters were fence cutting (33%), severe littering (16%), road damage (13%), crop damage (10%), cattle shot (8%), gates left open (6%), and trespassing (6%). Eighty-three (5%) of the landowners reported damage costs of $500 or more; one sustained a $15,000 loss. Total state-wide …

Our native flora and fauna do best in their own environment, so one way of protecting them is to conserve and maintain areas of remnant vegetation throughout our farmlands. This is the aim of the Remnant Vegetation Protection Scheme in which the State Government helps private landholders to voluntarily fence off and manage areas of native vegetation on farms.

Sales by U.S. "furniture and home furnishings" stores were nearly $75 billion in 1987, the year of the most recent Census of Retail Trade. The sales total includes $26 billion for "furniture" stores, $16 billion for "homefurnishings" stores, $8 billion for "household appliance" stores, and $24 billion for "radio, television, computer, and music" stores.

The 1987 Census of Retail Trade reports sales for the combined category, furniture and home furnishings, for all U.S. states, counties, and metropolitan areas. In this article, therefore, the term "furniture and home furnishings" refers to combined sales for all of the store types in Table …

The Office of Technology Assessment recently prepared a 500 page report titled Technology and the American Economic Transition, Choices for the Future. OTA sees four major factors that are resulting in "economic transition" factors that will continue to transform the U.S. economy during the next 20 years: new technologies, new challenges from abroad, new resource constraints, and new values and tastes in U.S. consumer and labor markets.

New technologies, particularly in collecting and handling information, are expected to have long-term, pervasive economic and social impacts comparable to past U.S. economic transformations from major technologies such as automobiles and railroads. New …

Present net worth and internal rate of return are frequently used for ranking investment alternatives. The relative merits and limitations of the two criteria are discussed at length in numerous journal articles and texts. For analysts wishing to present consistent project comparisons, the issue is not which criterion is superior, but when are they equivalent. In this article, conditions for equivalence in use are outlined under alternative assumptions. Although the conditions appear complex, they are not unduly restrictive.

Some Statistical Analyses Of The Climate Of Nacogdoches, Texas For Applications In Natural Resources Management, Alexander Sayok

Analyses of a variety of climatic variables generated from 80 years (1901-80) of daily precipitation and temperature data collected by the National Weather Service showed that Nacogdoches is characterized by a humid subtropical climate with an average annual precipitation and temperature of 45.96 inches and 65.5°F, respectively. The summer is warm and dry with mean maximum temperature of 91.6°F while winter is mild with mean minimum temperature of 38°F. There were no statistical differences between mean annual temperature and precipitation on the 1951-80 and 1901-80 periods or between any 2 normal periods. Rain days occurred once in every 4 days …

Cartographic modeling was used to evaluate the natural resources of the Angelina National Forest in East Texas. With the aid of the Map Analysis Package, three models were developed to evaluate historic changes, project future trends and to determine the proximity of resource to a specific location. Accuracies of results were determined at two different scales. MAP estimates at the smaller scales were about 92% and about 98% at the larger scale. The Effects Of Nitrogen And Phosphorus Fertilizer On A Young Loblolly Pine Plantation On Lignite Mine Spoil In East Texas, Martin Andrew Shupe

Five levels of nitrogen fertilizer combined with three levels of phosphorus fertilizer were tested in a two year-old loblolly pine plantation on a lignite mine spoil in East Texas. Growth parameters, foliar and spoil nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations were measured after two growing seasons. Nitrogen increased diameter growth during the first year, and foliar nitrogen increased with increasing fertilizer rates for both years. Phosphorus increased height during the first year and over both years combined and also increased diameter during the second year and over both years combined. Foliar phosphorus was increased by nitrogen in the first year. Spoil phosphorus …

Sulfate Leaching From Sulphur Binding Agents In Experimental Asphalt Pavement, Angelina County, Texas, Peter Blanchette

Sulfate leaching from sulphur-binding agents used in asphalt pavement was significantly higher (p>.05) from four layers of a mixture of a single aggregate base material of hot sand, when compared to all other treatments. Analysis of the data showed that the other treatments had no overall effect on the soil sulfates. Four layers of a single aggregate of hot sand increased the quantity of sulfates in the soil by 107%. I recommend the use of sulphur-asphalt binder with the type "D" base material throughout construction or when two layers of the type "D" base material are placed on top …
