The Age And Fertility Of Lignite Strip Mine Spoils From The Darco Mine, Harrison County, Texas, Reagan Cook

Field observation of lignite strip mine spoils from the Darco mine near Marshall, Texas, revealed that gray spoil materials of various ages were devoid of vegetation. Within the same sites, spoil materials which were non-gray supported several conditions of revegetation. Analysis of spoil materials from this mine was undertaken to determine if spoils were differentiated on a chemical basis. Gray materials appear to have greater mineral sources of zinc, iron, and sulfate than non-gray spoils, and greater concentrations of zinc, calcium, magnesium, and potassium at all sites. One-year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings were grown in a greenhouse in potted mixtures of two Texas lignite fly ashes and a Troup sand, Sacul sandy loam, and a sandy clay loam strip-mine spoil. Mixtures contained 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent fly ash. After six months, soil fly ash mixtures were analyzed for N, P, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Mn, Zn, pH, cation-exchange capacity, percent base saturation, and texture. Needle and root tissue analyses were performed on both live and dead seedlings. Survival and height growth were both adversely affected by fly ash amendments. Nearly all seedlings …

The Effects Of Prescribed Burning On Nutrient Content Of Selected Understory Species In An East Texas Loblolly-Shortleaf Pine Stand, Kelly Bell

The objectives of this study were to determine whether prescribed burning affected nutrient levels in leaves and twigs of six species and whether there were differences in response between leaves and twigs. Backfire and headfire treatments were used to determine differences between burning techniques. Samples were collected in October, 1974. The burn was in March, 1975 and post-burn sampling was in June, 1975, September, 1975, and June, 1976. Leaf and twig tissue were analyzed for contents of protein, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus and then subjected to statistical analysis. No difference was found between burning techniques. This publication contains instructions for manually calculating the indexes and components of the 1978 National Fire-Danger Rating System (NFDRS). The procedures are explained with worked examples. Working sets of nomograms for the 20 NFDRS fuel models are not included. However, an order form for obtaining the needed nomograms is provided. The purpose of this study was to determine if the direct mechanical manipulation of compacted campground soils, with and without the addition of organic materials and the planting of grasses, had any long lasting effect on the amelioration of these deteriorated campsites. An attempt was also made to determine the natural recovery time for East Texas sandy loam soils using the campground closure method. Closure or partial (seasonal) closure of campsites reduced compaction to an acceptable level in three years. Roto-tilling alone was the least effective treatment. LANDSAT-l imagery and satellite photography have been utilized for land-use mapping. This study investigated the correlation between woodland stands mapped and their percent crown closure using LANDSAT-l imagery and Skylab-4 photography. On the basis of percent accuracy of crown closure classes mapped or not mapped, Skylab-4 photography proved superior over LANDSAT-l imagery for mapping woodlands

Effects Of Land Disposal Of Pulp Mill Effluents On Plant Nutrient Uptake And Element Balance, Joseph B. Schwarzback

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An analysis of the soil and plant tissues was undertaken to ascertain the effect that land irrigation with pulp mill effluent has on nutrient uptake and element balance of tree seedlings. Results show that the effluent significantly increased the sodium content of both soil and tissue; however, these levels fell far below the level necessary to become detrimental to plant life, soil chemistry and soil structure. There was evidence that the increase of elements from the effluent provided positive effects in growth and plant health. There was no evidence of sodium toxicity or calcium starvation. All land management activities on managed rangelands will have some impact(s) on fish habitat; those in the riparian zone will have the greatest impact(s). Native trout populations in the Great Basin of southeastern Oregon exhibit predictable responses to alterations in their habitats; optimum production of native trout is therefore achievable through careful habitat management.

Stephen F. Austin State University was awarded a contract in August 1971 to select the 1,200 acres best suited for recreation area development on three proposed flood control reservoirs. At that time, there was no central publication which could be used as a guide for such a project. This thesis was written to help correct this situation. The nine factors that were used in initial site selection are soils, topography, access, wind, vegetation, land ownership, distribution of the sites, bridges and open-water and cove locations. Average contents of N, P, K, Ca, and Na and total above ground dry matter were determined in 19-year-old unthinned loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations in southeastern Arkansas. Three stands were sampled on each of four sites: well and poorly drained coastal plain soils and well and poorly drained loessial soils. Total dry weights, determined from 15 felled trees on each of the 12 plots, ranged from 127,000 kg/ha on poorly drained loessial soil to 173,300 kg/ha on poorly drained coastal plain soil. A forest fire simulation exercise was developed for the purpose of supplementing forest fire instruction, presenting students with decision-making situations encountered on forest fires, and introducing them to the fire simulator at Stephen F. Austin State University. The final exercise was developed after preliminary work and development of a more simple exercise. The problems with equipment, recruitment of simulator personnel, and the development and execution of the simulator exercises are discussed. Scheduling adequate time for practice, and providing adequate personnel training were found to be the major obstacles in simulator use. Future fire simulator use at SFA will be dependent …
