The effects of postharvest 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatments on α-farnesene content, incidence of scald, and ethylene content of the Granny Smith apple were evaluated in this study. Harvested apples were treated with 1-MCP at concentrations of 312.5, 625, and 1250 ppb. The 625 and 1250 ppb doses were found to be the most effective in terms of quality protection during storage. For untreated fruits, symptoms of scald development appeared after 8 weeks in cold storage, whereas 1-MCP doses of 625 and 1250 ppb were effective in decreasing superficial scald in fruit after 24 weeks of cold storage. 1-MCP can inhibit oxidation …

Soybeans have been a favored livestock forage for centuries. However, only a few studies have been conducted to estimate the forage quality of soybean by near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). In this study, 353 forage soybean samples were used to develop near-infrared reflectance (NIR) equations to estimate four forage quality parameters: crude protein (CP), crude fat (CF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF). This study investigated the effects of various concentrations (10% and 12%, w/w) of persimmon marmalade and puree used in yogurt production. The antioxidant capacity, composition, and physicochemical and sensory properties of yogurts were established during the storage period. The titratable acidity contents and pH values of the samples changed slowly throughout the storage period. Yogurts made from persimmon marmalade had higher a and b values than did other yogurts. Yogurt containing 12% persimmon marmalade received the highest sensory analysis values. The dry matter contents of the samples fluctuated between 16.67% and 21.54% throughout the storage period. Turkey is an important bread wheat producer. The objective of this study was to dissect the diversity of genetic, agronomic, and quality characteristics of bread wheat cultivars grown on 25% of the total wheat area in Turkey. A total of 24 wheat cultivars and 5 wild progenitors of wheat were examined using 24 simple sequence repeat (SSR) primers with a known physical locus on the A, B, and D genomes of hexaploid wheat. Fusarium culmorum is a principal causal agent of root, crown, and foot rot disease in the wheat-growing areas of Turkey. The effects of different fertilization practices, fungicide sprays, and cultivar reactions of 12 wheat varieties were investigated for disease development in greenhouse conditions in 2006-2007. The fertilizers used in the experiments significantly reduced disease by 27.5%-54.7% compared to the nonfertilized control. The plants fertilized with calcium ammonium nitrate (26% N) or composite NPK (15%, 15%, 15%) showed fewer disease symptoms than those fertilized with NPK (20%, 20%, 0%) in the presowing applications. Anthropogenic fires have varying effects on the oak-dominated forests of the Zagros Mountains in western Iran. The objective of this project was to investigate the effects of fire on various components of soil. For this purpose three homogeneous and neighboring sites were inspected. Rhizomania is an important virus disease of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) caused by Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV). The virus is transmitted to the roots of host plants by the plasmodiophorid Polymyxa betae. During survey studies in September and October 2009, yellow vein banding symptoms were observed on wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum) plants growing in spinach (Spinacia oleracea) fields with a history of rhizomania in Samsun Province in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. Ten different Persian walnut cultivars were examined for their compositional data, including eight Hungarian and two introduced varieties. Oil content and fatty acid composition were determined, as well as oxidative stability (indicated by induction time). Antioxidative capacity, total polyphenol measurements, and individual phenolic compounds were also determined. Not only dry samples but fresh and stored samples were included in this study. Large differences were found among the varieties within these parameters, for example in oxidative stability, which contributes to antioxidative capacity. Growth, oil yield, and carvacrol content in Thymbra spicata L. Var. Spicata microshoots were analyzed after 12 weeks of storage in MS media supplemented with elevated levels (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 M) of three osmotic agents (sucrose, sorbitol, and mannitol) or ABA (0.0, 3.8, 7.6, and 11.4 μM). The obtained results revealed that using 0.2 M sucrose in the storage media yielded the best results in terms of growth reduction during conservation as well as maintenance of microshoot recovery at full capacity (100%) after conservation. Ips sexdentatus (Boerner) and I. Typographus (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) are considered to be important destructive pests of coniferous forests in Europe and Asia. In this study, the efficacy of Beauveria pseudobassiana strain ARSEF 9271 isolated from Dendroctonus micans (Kugelann) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) was evaluated against I. Sexdentatus and I. Typographus adults. Insects were treated with different conidial concentrations of the fungus to determine the virulence. A conidial suspension of 1 × 108 conidia mL-1 caused 100% mortality in both I. Sexdentatus and I. Typographus within 5 and 7 days, respectively. Increasing rates of atmospheric deposition of nitrogen (N) present a novel threat to the biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. Many forests are particularly susceptible to excess N given their proximity to sources of anthropogenic N emissions. This study summarizes results of a 25-yr treatment of an entire central Appalachian hardwood forest watershed via aerial applications of N with a focus on effects of added N on the cover, species richness, and composition of the herbaceous layer. Aim: Climate warming and increased wildfire activity are hypothesized to catalyse biogeographical shifts, reducing the resilience of fire-prone forests world-wide. Two key mechanisms underpinning hypotheses are: (1) reduced seed availability in large stand-replacing burn patches, and (2) reduced seedling establishment/survival after post-fire drought. We tested for regional evidence consistent with these mechanisms in an extensive fire-prone forest biome by assessing post-fire tree seedling establishment, a key indicator of forest resilience.

The latent multinomial model (LMM) of Link et al. [Biometrics 66 (2010) 178–185] provides a framework for modelling mark-recapture data with potential identification errors. Key is a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) scheme for sampling configurations of the latent counts of the true capture histories that could have generated the observed data. Assuming a linear map between the observed and latent counts, the MCMC algorithm uses vectors from a basis of the kernel to move between configurations of the latent data. We used non-native invasive plant data from the United States Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program, spatial statistical methods, and the space (cover class)-for-time approach to quantify the invasion potential and success (‘‘invasibility”) of three major invasive shrubs (multiflora rose, non-native bush honeysuckles, and common buckthorn) in broadly classified forest-type groups in seven Upper Midwest states. Smoothed maps of presence and cover percent showed a strong clustering pattern for all three invasive shrubs despite their different ranges. Non-native earthworms are found throughout much of the United States and southern Canada in areas that were glaciated during the most recent glaciation. These earthworms are changing nutrient cycling, modifying soil structure, and influencing diversity in forests throughout the Northern United States, and their invasion northward is facilitated by human activities. Although worms are present in compost piles and gardens of all Maine counties, there are no comprehensive studies of earthworms distributions in forested areas of Maine. Red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait) plantations are an important cover type of Department of Natural Resources (DNR) lands because of relatively high yields and economic value. Out of the approximate 400,000 acres of Minnesota red pine plantations one-fifth of the acreage is managed by the DNR. The DNR recently established a policy to rescind purposeful management to manage all red pine plantations to extended rotation ages, or rotation ages beyond those maximizing economic returns or biological yields. The carbon content of standing tree biomass was determined in the Gishwati Forest Reserve in north-western Rwanda and growth potential of the forest was estimated using a straightforward, generalisable model of natural forest regeneration. A survey was conducted on 2289 trees in plots throughout the reserve. Wood density data were obtained from literature and tree biomass was estimated using a recent pan-tropical allometric equation. A survey on United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects showed that current methods of growth rate projection for mixed, non-plantation forests might significantly overestimate the amount of carbon sequestered. …

Eretmocerus warrae Naumann and Schmidt is a thelytokous parasitoid that attacks the greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum. Its host discrimination and superparasitism behavior was investigated at different host densities and time intervals between the first and second ovipositions under laboratory conditions (22 ± 1 °C, 60 ± 5% RH, a 16:8 light:dark photoperiod). Correlation Between Browning Degree And Composition Of Importantturkish White Wine Grape Varieties, Mustafa Ümi̇t Ünal, Aysun Şener

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was undertaken to investigate the correlation between browning degree and composition of important Turkish white wine grape varieties during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Large seasonal and cultivar variations were found in all measured variables. The highest browning degree was found in the Narince cultivar in both years, followed by Emir and Sultaniye, with Narince being the most susceptible to browning and Sultaniye being the least. No correlation (P < 0.05) was found between browning degrees and cysteine, glutathione, polyphenol oxidase activity, or total phenolic contents. Effects of harvest year and variety on all measured parameters, except total phenolics, were statistically significant (P < 0.01).

This study explored the effects of foliar spray of selected plant growth regulators (PGRs) on the biochemical and phenolic antioxidant attributes of spinach (Spinacia oleracea) leaves. Following foliar spray at three growth stages (40, 50, and 60 days) with selected PGRs, namely humic acid (HA), Moringa oleifera leaf extract (MOLE), and 6-benzylamino purine (6-BAP), and their mixed form, the samples of spinach leaves were harvested. In the present study, five different grapes varieties grown in Turkey were comprehensively characterized in terms of physicochemical properties, total bioactive content, antiradical activity, and volatile sugar compounds. Thermal degradation kinetics of anthocyanin in the selected grape varieties were also analyzed. All the bioactive compounds and antiradical activity varied depending on variety and grape part (skin, pulp, or seed). Higher amounts of total phenolics, total flavonoids, anthocyanin, and antiradical capacity were obtained from seeds. Fifty-nine volatile compounds were observed in the grape varieties. This study was conducted to evaluate a set of 48 accessions and two controls of hexaploid winter wheat from the gene bank of the Genetic Resources Institute (Azerbaijan) to examine genotypic variation for 11 morphophysiological traits under saline and nonsaline conditions. Twenty-three genotypes of green gram (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) were collected to determine the extent of genetic diversity through morphological characters as well as random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR), and simple sequence repeat (SSR) fingerprinting results.
