Myrtus communis L. İs a shrub widespread in the Mediterranean area. The interest in this species is growing, mainly due to its pharmacological and aromatic properties. The overexploitation of wild populations induced increasing degradation of plant cover with serious risk of loss of genetic diversity. This research explored the morphological, chemical, and genetic diversity of wild myrtle populations in Sicily, with the aim to provide a first characterization of a core collection of 36 accessions from 7 localities for future domestication programs. In this study, we aimed to compare fatty acid and volatile compound compositions of four rosehip species, namely Rosa pimpinellifolia, R. Villosa, R. Canina, and R. Dumalis, by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC/FID) and headspace and immersion solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS and Im-SPME/GC-MS) techniques. The total lipid contents in fruits of the rosehip species varied from 5.83% (R. Villosa) to 7.84% (R. Dumalis). A total of 21 fatty acids were detected and quantified. In all species, except R. Drought is a recurring problem of Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) production under rainfed conditions. A better understanding of the responses of Jerusalem artichoke genotypes to drought can lead to the improvement of inulin content and inulin yield in Jerusalem artichoke and its production planning. Blackberry is commonly used both in the fresh and the processing market. In the present study antioxidant capacity, organic acids, phenolic compounds, vitamin C, and sugars content of blackberry cultivars grown in the east of Turkey were determined. Phenolic compounds, organic acids, vitamin C, and sugars were determined by HPLC. Antioxidant capacity was determined by spectrophotometric methods. The cultivar Cherokee had the highest antioxidant capacity (48.900 μmol TE g-1), and the cultivar Jumbo had the lowest antioxidant capacity (30.855 μmol TE g-1). A single cropping system with 1-year-old rootstocks by forcing culture has been proposed for white asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) production in Japan. The effects of two different types of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the physicochemical properties, biochemical composition, and storage quality of sweet pomegranate variety Beynarı were investigated during long-term storage. Pomegranates were harvested at the commercial harvest stage and packed in two different commercial types of MAP (MAP1, sealed in packages made of Xtend® film; MAP2, sealed in bags made of ZOEPAC). We studied 200 trees belonging to 20 accessions of cultivated olive (O. europaea L.) from 4 regions of origin, evaluated by means of agromorphological traits and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. The agromorphological traits showed high variation between genotypes and significant correlation coefficients were obtained among the values recorded in two consecutive years, 2013 and 2014. The maximum coefficient of variation for the quantitative agronomic traits was observed in fruit weight wet (13.45%), while the lowest was found in stone width (3.18%). Short-Term Changes Of Leaf Area Index, Light Transmission, And Gap In A Temperate Mixed Deciduous Forest Ecosystem In Bartın, Turkey, İlyas Bolat, Ömer Kara, Meli̇h Öztürk
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
In this study, leaf area index (LAI), light transmission, and gap were estimated by using the hemispherical photograph analysis technique with Hemisfer software version 1.5.3 for a temperate mixed deciduous forest. The height of the overall vegetation in the stand ranged from 15 to 20 m, and the diameters of the trees in the stand at breast height varied between 14 and 28 cm. This study showed that the mean value of LAI increased by 4% in the 5-year period from 2007 to 2012. LAI was significantly (P < 0.05) greater in 2012 than in 2007, whereas the mean percentage of light transmission was significantly lower in 2012 than it was in 2007. In addition, there was a significant (P < 0.01) correlation between LAI and light transmission, and there was also a statistically significant correlation between the gap and light transmission (P < 0.05). According to long-term meteorological data (1982-2012), this study also demonstrated that the mean air temperature rose approximately 1.0 °C between 2007 and 2012. Consequently, this study indicated that LAI varies with respect to time and the increase of LAI leads to a decrease in light transmission. Additionally, the air temperature and precipitation have a significant influence on the LAI.

Forests dominated by serotinous tree species are usually generalized to follow an autosuccessional model of postfire recovery. However, recent studies have suggested that prefire conditions, topography, and idiosyncrasies of the fire disturbance can have notable effects on how such forests respond to fire. Plum pox virus (PPV) is the causal agent of sharka disease of stone fruit trees. Since the late 1960s, PPV infection has been reported in different regions of Turkey. In this study, we aim to discover PPV strains in infected regions and determine its genetic variability in Turkey. Salt stress during germination degenerates crop establishment and declines yield in wheat (Triticum subsp.). Against salt (NaCl) stress, we investigated 12 bread (Triticum aestivum L.) and 10 einkorn wheat (T. monococcum subsp. monococcum) entries for germination rate, germinating power, coleoptile length, shoot length, root length, shoot/root length ratio, root fresh weight, root dry weight, and root fresh/dry weigh ratio. An effective blocking in variance analysis improved statistical significance and differentiation between germination stages and wheat entries. Pomegranate is an important fruit species, with increasing consumption and production in recent years throughout the world. In Turkey, Hicaznar, which was originally developed through selective breeding, is the most highly produced and exported cultivar. To isolate lines with improved productivity and quality, Hicaznar was selfed, open-pollinated, or crossed with the sweet pomegranate cultivars Ernar and Fellahyemez. Arising from the crosses, 3118 lines were developed, and 67 were considered for important traits. These 67 pomegranate genotypes, from different crosses, were compared with their parents, which are commercially important pomegranate genotypes regarding tree and fruit traits. This study aimed to determine the antioxidant capacity; the total phenolic, total carotenoid, sugar, and ascorbic acid contents; and some pomological characteristics of Citrus species (Citrus reticulata, Citrus sinensis, and Citrus paradisi) and mandarin (Citrus reticulata) and their new hybrids developed for yield at the Alata Horticultural Research Institute in Mersin, Turkey. With respect to antioxidant capacities, the highest value (45.28 µmol TE/100 g) was determined in Cocktail (Citrus paradisi) cultivar fruits among all examined cultivars and hybrids. Twelve cultivars and selections of sweet and sour cherries were surveyed and characterized agromorphologically. A total of 33 characters, mainly defined by the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute and the International Union for the Protection of New Cultivars of Plants, were used to describe the tree, branches, leaves, blooming, and fruits. This allowed unequivocally clear separation between six distinct growth forms-compact, dwarf, upright (pillar), columnar, weeping, and standard form-as well as evaluation of their interaction with four rootstocks of different vigor. In 1982, a study was initiated in the Field Branch watershed, in the University of Kentucky’s Robinson Forest, to evaluate forestry best management practice (BMP) effectiveness after intensive harvesting. The study utilized a paired watershed approach on three adjacent Field Branch subcatchments. One subcatchment was left as the control, one had BMPs implemented (including a 50-ft undisturbed buffer along the stream), and one was clear-cut to the stream’s banks without the use of BMPs (i.e. logger’s choice). Mountaintop removal mining (MTR) is a notorious stressor of stream ecosystems in the Central Appalachians. Valley fills (VF) lead to reduced occupancy, abundance, and species richness of stream salamanders. Multiple factors may be responsible for these reductions, but specifically habitat fragmentation and degradation may reduce colonization rates and increase local extinction rates. From 2013-2015, repeated counts of salamanders were conducted in stream reaches impacted by MTR/VF and compared to counts in reference reaches to answer the question: do stream salamander population dynamics differ between stream reaches impacted by MTR/VF and reference stream reaches? The loss of forested wetlands in the Lower Mississippi River Alluvial Valley in Arkansas has altered regional vegetation communities. Multiple restoration projects have been established in this region to restore wetlands and the services they provide. In order to return these functions to the environment, microtopographic features were constructed in 2001 at Bob White Memorial Wetlands Research and Teaching Station (Bob White). Vegetation diversity was examined at Cut-Off Creek Wildlife Management Area (Cutoff), a naturally forested wetland, and Bob White, an area formally converted to cropland that is now undergoing forest wetland restoration. This study assessed the service delivery in Makati Homeville (MH), Calauan in Laguna, Philippines. Specifically, it analyzed the perceived strength of the collaborative capacity of the Makati Social Welfare and Development-Extension Office (MSWD-EO) in the areas of accountability, outcomes, delivery and alignment, and proposed mechanisms by which service delivery can be scaled up to ensure sustainability. The Collaborate and United Nations Development Programme's Collaborative Capacity Framework was adopted to examine key areas of public service delivery where collaboration could be strengthened to ensure better outcomes. Effectiveness of two different (3 mM and 6 mM) concentrations of oxalic acid (OA) application in combination with modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on skin browning, fruit skin color (L*, a*, b*) values, fruit flesh firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), ratio of TSS/TA, pH total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), organic acids and soluble sugars, and percentage of O2/CO2 change in Hafif Çukurgöbek loquats stored at 5 °C for 30 days were evaluated. In vivo induction of parthenogenesis using an irradiated pollen technique provides successful results in melon and accelerates breeding by shortening the time for obtaining 100% homozygous lines. Before the era of modern fire suppression, California’s northern Sierra Nevada mixed-conifer and yellow pine forests were self-regulating; recurring short-interval, low-mixed severity wildfires maintained forest structure and composition, which in turn exerted bottom-up controls on subsequent wildfires. As a result of fire suppression, and coupled with the effects of climate warming and other anthropogenic disturbances, the fundamental structure of mixed-conifer and yellow pine forests has shifted. Wildfires may now be increasing in size, severity, and frequency across western North America.
