This study was completed with the aim of determining labor requirements, work efficiencies, and total costs of 6 different traditional hazelnut pick-up methods, along with 3 different mechanical harvest methods using a portable-type pneumatic hazelnut harvesting machine, on flat ground in two hazelnut orchards with linear and brush planting systems. Trials were conducted in the two different orchards in the August 2013 harvesting season. Marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) plants, also called Mexican or Aztec marigold, with symptoms of shoot proliferation, dwarfing, and reddening were observed in ornamental gardens of Van Province (Turkey). Five plants, two of them showing reddening and three symptomless plants, were sampled at the end of September 2014. Genomic DNA isolated from symptomatic and nonsymptomatic plant leaves was used to amplify 16S rDNA fragments by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Of the 5 marigold samples tested by PCR, only the two showing reddening symptoms yielded the expected 1.2-kb DNA fragments. Phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) is very low in alkaline calcareous soils; however, it can be improved by using suitable application methods along with farm manure (FM). The present field study was conducted to optimize phosphorus (P) levels and application methods in order to maximize wheat yield, PUE, and net returns on calcareous soils with and without FM application. Wood plastic composites (WPCs) were produced from different mixtures (up to 45% by weight) of poplar (Populus alba L.) and pruning branches of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) wood flours, polypropylene (53 wt.%), and maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (2 wt.%). Weight loss, flexural strength (MOR), flexural modulus (MOE), notched impact strength (IS), water absorption (WA), and thickness swelling (TS) of WPCs after 24 h of immersion in distilled water were determined before and after incubation with white-rot fungus (Trametes versicolor) for 7 weeks. Libani needle leaves with respect to epicuticular waxes, photosynthetic assimilation rates, and needle age. Rice is one of the most important crop plants as well as a model organism used for genetic studies. Transposons, especially retrotransposons, have a significant impact on the rice genome. A considerable percentage of the rice genome is composed of transposons (about 35%). Thus, transposons are an important internal factor for the genome evolution of rice varieties. In this study, we performed fing?erprint analyses of 37 Oryza sativa L. Cultivars using an IRAP marker. The genetic diversity of Turkish watermelon genotypes selected from the watermelon genetic resource collection was evaluated by simple sequence repeat (SSR) and sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) markers. Most of the accessions were collected from various geographical regions of Turkey. Different Citrullus species, wild relatives, foreign landraces, open pollinated (OP), and commercial hybrid cultivars were also assessed for genetic relatedness. Fourteen SSR primers and 31 SRAP primer combinations were used in the experiment. Both SSR markers (100%) and SRAP markers (97.3%) generated high polymorphisms. In this study it was proposed to investigate the effect of altitude and aspect on anatomical properties, wood density, and mechanical properties of Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) growing in Sinop, Turkey. Five altitude steps (0-200, 200-400, 400-600, 600-800, and 800-1000 m) and two aspect groups (north and south) were created in the research area. Calosoma sycophanta L. (Coleoptera: Carabidae) is a voracious predatory beetle that feeds on several important lepidopteran pests. It is mass reared in laboratory breeding and released against forest pests. Any infection in this beetle is undesirable because it impacts production of effective and healthy beetles. In the present study, a microsporidian pathogen was found in C. sycophanta. Mature spores of the pathogen are single, uninucleate, oval, and small, measuring about 3.04 × 1.7 µm. This investigation was aimed to evaluate 22 promising vegetable amaranth genotypes for antioxidant, leaf quality, and agronomic traits for two test seasons. The experiment was conducted to study the degree of genetic parameters, associations among different traits, and their contribution towards foliage yield. The analysis of variance for twelve traits was found highly significant. High mean, high range of variability, and high genotypic variance were observed for all the traits except content of Ca, protein, and carotenoid. Use of organic manures for soil amendment has gained renewed attention with growing concerns about sustaining soil productivity. A greenhouse study was carried out to determine the influence of different soil amendments, namely poultry manure (PM), cattle manure (CM), and sulfur (S), on soil P status. The application rates were 0, 4, and 8 t ha-1 for PM; 0, 20, and 40 t ha-1 for CM; and 0, 0.75, and 1.5 t ha-1 for S treatments. Improved phytochemicals and antioxidant properties in crops are becoming important traits in many breeding programs. In this study, along with several other horticultural attributes, total phenolic content (TP) and antioxidant capacity (ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC)) of 52 superior pepper genotypes from the Alata Pepper Breeding Program were examined. Genetic studies of watermelons [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai] sampled from Turkey, the second leading producer, may provide valuable information for breeding and research programs. The objectives of this study were to estimate the level of genetic diversity, population structure, and optimum genome sampling size among the Turkish and several introduced watermelons. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the photosynthetic responses of the forage species Bromus inermis at two montane grasslands (Filippaioi, Grammatiko) and a lowland grassland under differential irradiation and CO2 concentration levels. Two selected mutant lines, C26 and C82, with highly significant 1000-seed weight and generated through irradiation treatment of Amaranthus cruentus L. 'Ficha', were evaluated and compared to an original nontreated control and reference variety Aztec. The phenotypic traits and biochemical properties of the amaranth seeds were studied. Comparable values for crude protein content, albumins, and globulins fractions and overall coefficients of nutritional quality were found in the evaluated samples. However, C26 showed significantly lower concentrations of celiac-related prolamins and glutelins in comparison with the control sample. As blueberries ripen successively and are commercially harvested over a period of several weeks, their composition may be altered during the harvest. The aim of this study was to compare blueberry fruit composition during the entire harvest season. Fully ripe fruits of two northern highbush blueberry cultivars (Bluecrop and Jersey) were harvested weekly at two different locations. Additionally, the Earliblue cultivar was monitored at a single location. The study of the seed storage behavior and cryopreservation of embryonic axes was attempted in Citrus jambhiri genotypes using air desiccation-freezing, vitrification, and encapsulation-dehydration methods. Seeds of this species revealed nonorthodox seed storage behavior with moderate seed longevity and sensitivity to desiccation and freezing. Successful cryopreservation was achieved with all three methods using embryonic axes; however, the recovery growth percentage significantly differed among these methods. Cryopreservation was efficient for the embryonic axes desiccated to 13%-15% moisture content. Freezing of embryonic axes at this moisture content in liquid nitrogen showed a good recovery rate of 40%-50%. In the vitrification method, embryonic …

The objective of this study was to determine the seed distribution uniformity of seeding machines using a low sensitivity (maximum 300 frames per second (fps)) high-speed camera and image processing method for corn, cotton, and wheat seeds under laboratory conditions. For this purpose, a high-speed camera with 100, 200, and 300 fps was used to measure the seed drop from the seeding tube onto the sticky belt. In this paper, static bending (modulus of rupture, MOR, and modulus of elasticity, MOE) and compression strength parallel to grain (Σc??) of black alder wood (Alnus glutinosa Gaertn.) were investigated. For experimental testing, we used black alder wood from two different areas: Crni Jarci, Croatia, and Malá Byst?ice, Czech Republic. Experimental tests were carried out according to the Czech national standards: ?SN 49 0115 and ?SN 49 0116 for static bending and ?SN 49 0110 for compression strength.
