Content Changing aspen distribution in response to climate change and fire is a major focus of biodiversity conservation, yet little is known about the potential response of aspen to these two driving forces along topoclimatic gradients.

Objective This study is set to evaluate how aspen distribution might shift in response to different climate-fire scenarios in a semi-arid montane landscape, and quantify the influence of fire regime along topoclimatic gradients.

Nitrogen (N) fertilization potentially affects soil N mineralization and leaching, and can enhance NH3 volatilization, thus impacting crop production. A fertilizer experiment with five levels of N addition (0, 79, 147, 215 and 375 kg N ha-1) was performed in 2009 and 2010 in a maize field in Huanghuaihai region, China, where > 300 kg N ha-1 has been routinely applied to soil during maize growth period of 120 days. Initial damage caused by wild ungulates was minimal. In August 2013, a large elk pulled off five cones and destroyed three saplings on the exposed, eastern side of the exclosure. Although deer tracks were plentiful in the bare earth of the fire line, there was no evidence that deer had harmed the saplings. The combination of a cone and a mesh sleeve on the exposed saplings sufficed.

Agroforestry parklands represent a vast majority of the agricultural landscape under subsistent-oriented farming in semi-arid West Africa. Parklands are characterized by the growth of well- maintained trees (e.g., shea) on cultivated fields as a result of both environmental and human influences. Shea (Vitellaria paradoxa) provides a cultural and economic benefit to the local people of Ghana, especially women. Periods between traditional fallow rotation systems have reduced recently due to agricultural development and a demand for higher production. A senior within a spatial science Ecological Planning capstone course designed an undergraduate research project to increase his spatial science expertise and to assess the hands-on instruction methodology employed within the Bachelor of Science in Spatial Science program at Stephen F Austin State University. The height of 30 building features estimated remotely with LiDAR data, within the Pictometry remotely sensed web-based interface, and in situ with a laser rangefinder were compared to actual building feature height measurements. Tree height is a critical variable of forest inventory assessments, and estimating the height of trees has been a component of forest inventory assessments for decades. The actual tree height of 60 open-grown baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) trees measured with a telescopic height pole were compared to Pictometry hyperspatial 4-in. multispectral imagery estimated tree height on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, Texas. The scientific revolution that started with the human-genome sequencing project, carried out with first-generation sequencing technology, has initiated other sequencing projects, including those for plant species. Different technologies have been developed together with the second- and third-generation sequencing platforms called 1396984945next-generation1396986481 sequencing. This review deals with the most relevant second-generation sequencing platforms, advanced analysis tools, and sequenced plant genomes. This study examined the influence of drought stress during the flowering stage of 2 canola cultivars on some physiological characteristics, antioxidant activities, and gene expression of antioxidant enzymes. Significant differences were observed among interactions of cultivars and levels of drought stress in total shoot dry material, relative water content percentage, proline, carbohydrates, gene expression, and activities of antioxidant enzymes. Moreover, a significant positive correlation was indicated between shoot dry materials with relative water content percentage, sucrose, catalase activity, ascorbate peroxidase activity, and cytosolic ascorbate peroxidase relative gene expression ratio. Numerous diseases caused by fungal pathogens influence the annual production of sugar beet. In order to obtain a plant resistant to fungi, genetic transformation has been applied to the sugar beet. To invade a plant tissue, phytopathogenic fungi produce several cell wall-degrading enzymes (CWDEs); polygalacturonases (PGs) are pathogenicity factors produced at the earlier stages of a fungal infection that depolymerize the homogalacturonan. One of the strategies used by plants to limit the degradation of the cell wall polysaccharides by fungal CWDEs is the production of proteinaceous inhibitors. Against fungal, microbial, and insect PGs, plants produce cell wall-associated polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins (PGIPs). …

Genetic Variability, Heritability, And Genetic Advance In Strawberry(Fragaria × Ananassa Duch.), Pranav Kumar Mishra, Ram Badan Ram, Neeraj Kumar

Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) genotypes were evaluated to study genetic variation and the relationship between yield and its component using a randomized complete block design during 2013/14. The results showed significant variance among genotypes of all traits. The phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) for all the characters was slightly higher than genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), which signified the presence of environmental influence to some degree in the phenotypic expression of characters. Lentil, which belongs to the family Leguminosae (Fabaceae), is a diploid (2n = 2x = 14 chromosomes) self-pollinating crop with a genome size of 4063 Mbp. The current study aimed to verify the preferred guava fruit ripening stage for egg laying by Anastrepha fraterculus (Diptera: Tephritidae) and to determine the influence of peel coloration of the fruits of 2 cultivars on infestation. The cultivars used were Paluma and Século XXI. The infestation level was evaluated in cages, considering 2 conditions: multiple-choice and nonchoice tests. The infestation levels of A. fraterculus differed between the green and the green-ripe stages in the multiple-choice test. The present study investigated 12 different Pistacia terebinthus L. (terebinth) fruits, harvested or purchased in Turkey, for fatty acid composition, radical scavenging, antimicrobial activity, and total phenolic content. Solvent optimization for the samples was prepared by using a simplex lattice mixture design prior to the analysis. The optimum solvent mixture was 39% water and 61% acetone, based on the maximization of extraction yield of phenolic compounds. Total phenolic contents (TPCs) of the extracts varied from 12,189 mg GAE/1000 g extract to 36,392 mg GAE/1000 g extract. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities of the extracts varied over a wide range (8.86%-64.43%) …

In order to compare the effects of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) as a filler, MCC and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites were produced with 4 different wt.% MCC loadings (1 wt.%, 5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, and 20 wt.%). To improve the compatibility between MCC and the matrix, MCC was acetylated with vinyl acetate (VA), and 2 different MCC-HDPE composites were produced with 5 wt.% and 10 wt.% VA-modified MCC loadings. Untreated MCC and VA-modified MCC-reinforced HDPE pellets were produced by using a twin-screw extruder.
