Fires in boreal and temperate forests play a significant role in the global carbon cycle. While forest fires in North America (NA) have been surveyed extensively by U.S. and Canadian forest services, most fire records are limited to seasonal statistics without information on temporal evolution and spatial expansion. Such dynamic information is crucial for modeling fire emissions. Using the daily Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data archived from 1989 to 2000, an extensive and consistent fire product was developed across the entire NA forest regions on a daily basis at 1-km resolution. The aim of this research was to determine water conveyance loss in the open canal irrigation network that serves the irrigation areas on the right and left banks of the Menemen Plain, in the lower part of the Gediz Basin. The research was carried out in the main, secondary, and tertiary canals. Water conveyance loss in the canals was measured by the inflow-outflow method, while water velocity was determined using a current-meter. Determination Of Pollen Production And Quality Of Some Local And Foreign Walnut Genotypes In Turkey, Mehmet Sütyemez

The pollen grains of 32 different walnut cultivars and types were tested in vitro to determine their viability, germination ability, and pollen production level. Viability of pollens was determined by TTC and FDA tests. The hanging drop method and agar in petri method were used for pollen germination. Pollen production of the cultigens was determined with the hemacytometric method. The rate of pollen viability of all the investigated cultigens was high (> 80%). The germination rate of the pollens ranged from 33.28% to 50.19% and the Van 4 cultivar had the highest pollen germination rate. Although similar results were obtained …

The Nazilli region of Aydın province in Turkey leads in terms of number of chestnut trees and quantity of chestnuts produced. This research was conducted to determine chestnut genotypes having high yield and superior fruit quality in the Nazilli region. Overall fruit quality, fruit size, precocity, and suitability for paste processing of chestnut genotypes were investigated. The observed characteristics of genotypes were ranked using certain criteria. Number of fruit samples collected from 2001 to 2003 are 80 (2001), 46 (2002), and 38 (2003). Lysozyme was partially purified from hen egg white by precipitation of non-lysozyme protein impurities during incubation in the presence of ethanol. The thermal stability of the obtained partially purified enzyme was also characterized. The incubation of diluted egg white for 2-8 h in the presence of 20% ethanol was not very effective for the partial purification of lysozyme by precipitation of major egg white proteins; however, 4- to 6-h or 6- to 8-h incubation of diluted egg white in the presence of 30% and 40% ethanol could be employed more effectively for partial purification of lysozyme. This study was conducted to determine the effect of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki on the larvae of Thaumetopoea solitaria in the search for an alternative control method with minimal undesirable side effects. Four larval stages were tested with various concentrations of the bacterium under controlled conditions by dipping pistachio saplings in relevant suspensions and feeding larvae on their leaves. The effect of B. thuringiensis var. kurstaki was significantly higher on the 1^{st} instar larvae than on the 2^{nd} and the 3^{rd} instar larvae, and the effect was significantly higher on the 2^{nd} instar larvae than on the 3^{rd} instar larvae. …

A total of 28 line and 24 point-source fires were ignited under varying weather and fuel loading conditions in Anatolian black pine (Pinus nigra J.F.Arnold subsp. nigra var. caramanica (Loudon) Rehder) stands. Relationships between the rate of fire spread and fuel and weather conditions were determined with correlation and regression analyses. The rate of fire spread ranged from 0.12 to 1.20 m min^{-1} in line fires. Fruit yield response of a mandarin (Citrus reticulata cv. Marisol) orchard to deficit irrigation, which was imposed either through conventional deficit irrigation (DI) or a newly evolving irrigation technique, called partial root drying (PRD), was investigated. The PRD practice simply requires wetting of one half of the rooting zone and leaving the other half dry, thereby utilising reduced amount of irrigation water applied. The wetted and dry sides are interchanged in the subsequent irrigations. The distribution of mating types of Ascochyta rabiei (teleomorph: Didymella rabiei) was studied on isolates collected from chickpea growing areas of Central Anatolia. Mating type assessments of 45 isolates from 6 different provinces were conducted under laboratory conditions. After keeping for 5-6 weeks, the pseudothecial development and ascospore production were observed on chickpea stem pieces that were incubated in 8 ± 1 °C and 85% relative humidity. Both mating types were found in all the provinces, except for Kayseri and Sivas. The majority of the isolates belonged to Mat 1-1 (57.8%) and the others (42.2%) to MAT 1-2. Additionally, the …

This study aimed to establish the economic and technical applicability of the alternative control methods to methyl bromide (MB) in pepper and eggplant. These crops were grown in plastic houses and tunnels including open field strawberry cultivation in the East Mediterranean region of Turkey and were assessed over the 2000-2002 growing season. A field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of wild oat (Avena fatua) densities on wheat (Triticum aestivum) yield, its components and protein content under varying nitrogen regimes, at the Agricultural Research Farm, North West Frontier Province Agricultural University, Peshawar, Pakistan, during winter 2004-5. Genetic Variation Among Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) Cultivars For Seed-Set Efficiency, Yüksel Bölek, Mustafa Oğlakçi

Seed-set efficiency (SSE) is one of the most important within-boll yield components in cotton production. Increased SSE can lead to increased seed number and, ultimately, to greater fiber yield. A field experiment was conducted during 2003-2004 to compare cotton cultivars (Gossypium hirsutum L.), in terms of the potential for improved SSE, in a Mediterranean region (Kahramanmaraş Agricultural Research Institute). SSE changed by year by about 1%-2%, averaging 94%-95%. Mean values for cultivars ranged from 95.78% (Deltaopal) to 93.98% (Nazilli 84S) in 2003, and from 95.67% (Sayar 314) to 94.75% (Carmen) in 2004. Determining The Relationships Between Yield And Yield Attributes In Sunflower, Yalçin Kaya, Göksel Evci̇, Sezgi̇n Durak, Veli̇ Pekcan, Tahi̇r Gücer

Relationships between seed yield and agronomic characters in sunflower were investigated without considering genetic effects. Sunflower hybrids were evaluated in 3 categories: constant hybrids, control hybrids (mostly the same in each year), and test hybrids (changing each year). Seed yield was positively correlated with oil content, plant height, and 1000-seed weight, but flowering and physiological maturity period correlated negatively with yield based on the analyses in this research. A diverse relationship was determined between the seed yield of the hybrids and oil content.
