Mixed-conifer forests dominated by ponderosa pine trees prevail across the Western United States. Once sustained by frequent, low-intensity fires, these ecosystems have changed dramatically as a result of a hundred years of fire suppression resulting in an accumulation of fuels and shade tolerant species. Researchers are finding that reintroducing fire to these systems may be more complicated than once thought. The forests at Crater Lake National Park are a kind of microcosm for the wide-ranging mixed conifer forests across the West. Tillage is an operation to improve soil conditions for optimal crop emergence and yield. Different tillage implements and operational variables may affect soil physical properties. This study investigated aboveground pools and fluxes of biomass, carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) in the overstory and understory of a southern Appalachian red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) – Fraser fir (Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.) forest, following adelgid-induced fir mortality and spruce windthrow. Using fifty 20 m × 20 m plots, stratified by elevation (1700–1900 m), we estimated standing biomass and fluxes of all growth forms from periodic stand inventories (1998–2003), vegetation surveys, and existing or derived allometric equations. A field study was conducted in a high-elevation spruce–fir (Picea rubens Sarg. – Abies fraseri (Pursh.) Poir) forest in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to assess the effect of temperature on soil C storage and dynamics. In eight plots along an elevation gradient (1500–1900 m), we measured soil temperature, forest floor and mineral soil C, litter decomposition, soil respiration, and forest floor mean residence time. Mean annual soil temperature and annual degree-days above 5 °C were inversely correlated with elevation. Total soil C (166–241 Mg·ha–1) showed no trend with elevation, while forest floor C accumulation (16.3–35.9 Mg·ha–1) decreased significantly …

Effects Of Light Regime And Season Of Clipping On The Growthof Cherrybark Oak, White Oak, Persimmon, And Sweetgum Sprouts, Robert L. Ficklin, Michael G. Shelton

A mixture of cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.), white oak (Q. alba L.), persimmon (Diospyros virginiana L.), and sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) seedlings was grown in shadehouses to simulate light conditions beneath a canopy. After the first growing season, two release treatments were implemented (released and not released), and treatments were conducted during two seasons (winter and spring). All seedlings were clipped at 2.5 em from the groundline in height when treatments were imposed. Survival of persimmon and sweetgum was 100% following clipping. The rootstock potential of Turkish Lagenaria siceraria germplasm for watermelon was evaluated. Among 210 accessions, 72 genotypes were selected based on morphological characteristics. Two commercial hybrid rootstocks were also used for comparison. Crimson Tide watermelon cultivar was used as a scion. Emergence rate, hypocotyl morphology, survival rate, and resistance to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum (FON) were investigated. Grafted plants were grown for 3 weeks in order to investigate the effect of rootstocks on plant growth. Leaf number, shoot dry weight, and root dry weight were determined. The efficacy of soil solarization in combination with Trichoderma spp. (S+Tr), dazomet (S+D 300, 400 and 500 kg ha^{-1} of dosages) and fresh chicken manure (S+CM 12.5 t ha^{-1}) as methyl bromide (MB) alternatives against root-knot nematodes on pepper cultivars was investigated in plastic greenhouses in the eastern Mediterranean Region of Turkey. Soil solarization for 6 weeks increased soil temperature by 8.4 and 7.8 °C at 10 cm soil depth in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Efficient plant regeneration via organogenesis was established for 2 summer squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) cultivars, viz. Bulum and Rumbo, using hypocotyl and cotyledon derived calli. Seeds were surface sterilized in 0.1% HgCl_2 for 5 min, and germinated in vitro in plant growth regulator free MS media. The maximum morphogenic callus induction rate (86%) was observed from a hypocotyl explant by culturing in MS medium supplemented with 2.5 mg l^{-1} 2,4-D. Calli size and fresh weight increased substantially through subculturing. This study was conducted to determine the effects of different irrigation systems on the inundative release of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma evanescens Westwood (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) against Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in the second crop maize in the Çukurova region of Turkey in 1999 and 2000. Sodium chloride (NaCl) treatments were conducted on strawberry plants (Fragaria x ananassa cvs. Camarosa and Chandler) grown under greenhouse conditions. Modified Hoagland solution (one-third strength) containing 0 (control), 8.5, 17.0 and 34.0 mM NaCl was applied to the plants for 6 months. High NaCl concentrations caused serious reductions in growth parameters such as fresh weight (FW) of leaves, stems and roots, leaf area and the number of leaves. Addition of salt to the growth medium caused a reduction in stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (E) of Camarosa. Saline water up to 34 mM NaCl did not have any influence …

Field experiments were carried out at the Agricultural Research Station, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Tabriz, in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. Three winter oilseed rape cultivars (Okapi, Licord, and SLM046) with 12 weed interference durations were evaluated in a factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The predictive power of a hyperspectral imagery for estimating woody and herbaceous biomass were examined for a big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) dominated area in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States of America. The normalized difference vegetation (NDV) and structure insensitive pigment (SIP) indices were used to investigate the relationships between biomass components and reflectance spectra. Ground data were collected in 13 sample plots 1 m^2 in size by clipping all herbaceous vegetation to ground level and stripping green leaves from big sagebrush plants. The study was carried out to determine the adaptation potential of sweet potato crops to different regions of Turkey. The study included 9 introduced genotypes of diverse origin and 2 local genotypes that were tested in 4 locations (Diyarbakır and Şanlıurfa representing the southeastern Anatolia region, and Adana and Hatay representing the Mediterranean region) in 2000 and 2001. Growth and essential oil content of peppermint (Menhta piperita var. officinalis) and lemon verbena (Lipia citriodora var. Verbena) were evaluated in response to salinity and nutrient solution concentrations, measured as electrical conductivity (EC 0.7, 1.4, 2.8, 5.6, and 5.6_{Na} dS m^{-1}). In peppermint, the highest fresh weight and dry weight were observed in the 1.4 dS m^{-1} treatment. The increased EC with either NaCl or all nutrients at 5.6 dS m^{-1} reduced the fresh weight of lemon verbena. The objectives of this study were to determine the changes to some agronomic properties that significantly affect seed yield, and to conserve landraces of the common bean of Artvin province, especially in areas that will be flooded by dam projects, by collecting them before they are lost. Effect of increasing application of NaCl on germination, root and shoot dry weight at early growth stage, and concentrations of potassium (K) and sodium (Na) was studied in 16 bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes grown in nutrient solution. Application of NaCl was carried out at concentrations of 2, 55, 117, 194, and 287 mM. The genotypes showed a wide range of variation for the traits measured under the NaCl treatments. The Effects Of Biological And Chemical Treatment On Gray Mold Disease In Tomatoes Grown Under Greenhouse Conditions, Fi̇gen Yildiz, Mehmet Yildiz, Nafi̇z Delen, Arzu Coşkuntuna, Pervi̇n Kinay, Hüseyi̇n Türküsay

A total of 163 bacterial strains isolated from tomato leaves were evaluated for their ability to suppress gray mold (Botrytis cinerea Pers. ex Fr.) on tomatoes, and 4 strains consistently reduced the incidence of B. cinerea. These antagonist strains were identified as Pseudomonas fluorescens. The bacterial strains with in vitro resistance to fungicides were combined with low-dose fenhexamid in vivo. One strain of P. fluorescens (Pf163) reduced the disease incidence by an average of 78% on tomato plants inoculated with B. cinerea in greenhouse trials. Synergistic Effects Of The Inoculation With Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria And An Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungus On The Performance Of Wheat, Mohammad Saghir Khan, Almas Zaidi

The synergistic effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria and an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus (Glomus fasciculatum) on plant growth, yield, and nutrient uptake of wheat plants were determined in field conditions. The triple inoculation of Azotobacter chroococcum with Bacillus and Glomus fasciculatum significantly increased the dry matter by 2.6-fold above the control. Grain yield of plants inoculated with A. chroococcum together with Bacillus sp. and G. fasciculatum was 2-fold higher than that of non-inoculated plants, at 135 days after sowing (DAS). Monochamus galloprovincialis (Olivier) is the vector of the pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner and Buhrer) Nickle, in Europe and Asia. Reproduction is probably the most important event in the life history of insects and may be affected by a number of factors, such as seasonal changes in larval or adult nutrition. In this study the effect of season on the reproductive potential of M. galloprovincialis females reared in black pine logs was investigated by constructing fertility tables for each of 43 pine logs that differed only in the season that they were cut.
