You as a forest farmer can usually realize income from your timber investment in two ways. You can rent timberland for nontimber uses (usually hunting) , or you can lease or sell your interest in the timber. In most cases, greater returns result from selling timber outright.

The importance of nonindustrial private forest( NIPF) lands to national timber output potential is well-documented (USDA Forest Service 1981, 1982; Wall 1981). The NIPF sector controls 58 percent of the Nation's commercial fm·est area, compared to 14- percent in forest industry holdings, and 28 percent in public forests (Figure 1). Approximately 71 percent of the commercial forest area in the eastern United States is held by the NIPF sector.

Forestry research is conducted by state and federal agencies and by many private firms. Studies of research productivity and efficiency are increasingly common in forestry, due to the greater scale of research activity, and increasing competition for both public and private funds. Research evaluations rely on accurate measures of research inputs and outputs. This article presents an equation to predict research inputs for five major firms in the U.S. pulp and paper industry. Pulp and paper research by major U.S. companies is very closely related to corporate sales each year. The relationship empirically supports important assumptions that have been used …

The general rationale for public support of research and specific reasons for support of particular research areas are of potential concern to many people. Those directly concerned with research ·funding and its rationale, for example, range from legislators to research administrators, scientists and graduate students. Public support of specific research areas is often defended for socio~polit~ ical and economic reasons. As an example, although private-sector research in forestry is conducted by large, diversified firms, the benefits of even highly applied research can be difficult to capture. Anticipated rates of return can help landowners and forest managers evaluate hardwood control and many other stand treatments. A simple microcomputer model is discussed which displays rates of return for specific stand treatment conditions. The program can be used before or after taxes and with or without inflation. The model displays rates of return for ranges of silvicultural treatment costs and expected harvest value increases, thus providing information for evaluating treatments where growth responses or future prices are difficult to estimate.

"The purpose of this symposium is not to debate either the concept of wilderness or the amount of wilderness appropriate for the United States. These are not debatable issues for present purposes. The Congress has spoken twice. The Wilderness Act of 1964 (PL 88-577) and the amendments of 1975, known as the "Eastern Wilderness Act" (PL 93-622), both set-aside existing areas as wilderness and established procedures for consideration of additions to the wilderness system. Equations to estimate site index (index age 25 years) for plantations of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and slash pine (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) on non-old fields in East Texas have been developed. Most foresters and forest landowners are aware that money has a time value. A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. If you borrow $1,000 from the bank today, you would have to pay back more than $1,000 in 90 days. The term forest economists use for this concept is the t :!me value of money: the closer to today you receive a sum of money, the greater its present value.

One of two planted loblolly pine trees (Pinus taeda L.) and over one of three (36%) planted slash pine trees (Pinus elliottii Engelm.) on non-old-fields in East Texas have a poor quality stem. For both species, o poor quality stem is three times more likely to occur on trees with crowns in the upper canopy then in the lower canopy.

Fusiform rust ( Cronartium quercuum (Berk.) Miyabe ex Shirai f. sp. fusiforme) infection occurs on 57% of planted slash pine ( Pinus elliottii Engelm. ) and on 11 % of planted loblolly pine ( Pinus laeda l.) trees on non-old-fields in East Texas. Future utilization of these planted pines may be affected by the rust infection rates.

Sulfate leaching from sulphur-binding agents used in asphalt pavement was significantly higher (p>.05) from four layers of a mixture of a single aggregate base material of hot sand, when compared to all other treatments. Analysis of the data showed that the other treatments had no overall effect on the soil sulfates. Four layers of a single aggregate of hot sand increased the quantity of sulfates in the soil by 107%. I recommend the use of sulphur-asphalt binder with the type "D" base material throughout construction or when two layers of the type "D" base material are placed on top …

Two Year Survival And Growth Of Loblolly Pine Seedlings From Two Texas Seed Sources On Lignite Minesoils, Gerald Allen Wood

Loblolly pine seedlings from Lost Pines (drought-hardy) and East Texas (regular) seed sources were planted in lignite minesoils in Panola County, Texas. Heights, root-collar diameters, and survival were monitored for two years. Treatments included application of Pisolithus tinctorius basidiospores immediately after planting and use of acephate for tip moth control during the second growing season. Standard foliar analyses were conducted at the end of the second growing season. East Texas seedlings grew more in height and root-collar diameter, and had higher survival percentages than Lost Pines. No growth response from treatment with P. tinctorius was observed. Most forest farmers know that growing timber is a good investment. Some forest farmers, however, and many new timberland investors may not fully understand the basic ingredients that make up a forestry investment. Like other ventures, forest farming involves costs and revenues, and rates of return can be calculated. These rates can be compared with interest rates for other investments, but forest farming is not exactly like your other investments. It has special qualities.

If you are considering a reforestation investment, you should be concerned with its effective cost; ,that is, the cost of reforestation after considering interest arid timing of the tax savings and cost-share payments. Effective regeneration costs depend on your interest rate, marginal tax rate, and whether or not you receive assistance from a state or federal cost-share program.

Forest products firms often buy much of their raw material through competitive bidding. The bidding process is vital to such companies, yet models are often used which merely help predict winning bids. Managers should consider expected returns from potential timber buying contracts-the product of profit and the prob· ability of realizing that profit. A general approach is summarized for maximizing expected profit in competitive bidding. For timber buying, profits are net returns minus stumpage costs. The probability of obtaining the profit is the probability a given bid will be accepted, and can be represented by a probability density function. The …

Public Law 96-451 provides federal income tax incentives for reforestation. Taxpayers are allowed an investment tax credit in the year reforestation costs are incurred and deductions of one-fourteenth of reforestation costs on their first tax return, one-seventh on each of their next six tax returns, and one-fourteenth on their eighth tax return. The amount amortized is 95 percent of costs if a 10-percent tax credit is claimed or 100 percent of costs if an 8- percent credit is chosen. The credit and deductions can be applied for up to $10,000 of reforestation costs each year.

Three or six ounces of colloidal phosphate were applied either in planting hole or on soil surface while planting loblolly pine in East Texas. Combination of phosphate in the planting hole with NK on soil surface increased diameter growth for four years and the height growth for 18 years after planting.

Three species of pines (loblolly, slash and longleaf) were planted with four treatments (loblolly and slash = bareroot, clay dip slurry and TerrasorH ; longleaf = containerized) to test survival on droughty, typic quartzipsamments soils. At the end of the first season, survival~s significantly better for the containerized longleaf and Terrasoro treated loblolly pine (81 and 85%) followed by untreaRed loblolly pine (51%), clay-treated loblolly (50%), then Terrasorb treated slash (48%), untreated slash (41%) and clay-treated slash (36%). Permanent plots have been established in 178 loblolly and 78 slash pine plantations throughout East Texas to study the development of stand structure over time. Analysis of the data will provide methods of estimating growth and yield, mortality, and site productivity to assist managers of these plantations.
