Behavioral Observations Of Drosophila Melanogaster As Compared To Humans, Ali Hosey, Marissa Arnett Jan 2018

Behavioral Observations Of Drosophila Melanogaster As Compared To Humans, Ali Hosey, Marissa Arnett

Natural Sciences Student Research Presentations

In this poster for the Natural Sciences Poster Session at Parkland College, students posit whether there are behavioral similarities between fruit flies and humans, given the genetic similarity. Using both wild type and vestigial wing fruit flies, the students concluded that, while there were no obvious individual behaviors, there might be a similar drive to congregate together.

Regressed But Not Gone: Patterns Of Vision Gene Loss And Retention In Subterranean Mammals, Christopher A. Emerling Jan 2018

Regressed But Not Gone: Patterns Of Vision Gene Loss And Retention In Subterranean Mammals, Christopher A. Emerling

Biology

Regressive evolution involves the degradation of formerly useful traits as organisms invade novel ecological niches. In animals, committing to a strict subterranean habit can lead to regression of the eyes, likely due to a limited exposure to light. Several lineages of subterranean mammals show evidence of such degeneration, which can include decreased organization of the retina, malformation of the lens, and subcutaneous positioning of the eye. Advances in DNA sequencing have revealed that this regression co-occurs with a degradation of genomic loci encoding visual functions, including protein-coding genes. Other dim light-adapted vertebrates with normal ocular anatomy, such as nocturnal and …

Chitinase Genes (Chias) Provide Genomic Footprints Of A Post-Cretaceous Dietary Radiation In Placental Mammals, Christopher A. Emerling, Frédéric Delsuc, Michael W. Nachman Jan 2018

Chitinase Genes (Chias) Provide Genomic Footprints Of A Post-Cretaceous Dietary Radiation In Placental Mammals, Christopher A. Emerling, Frédéric Delsuc, Michael W. Nachman

Biology

The end-Cretaceous extinction led to a massive faunal turnover, with placental mammals radiating in the wake of nonavian dinosaurs. Fossils indicate that Cretaceous stem placentals were generally insectivorous, whereas their earliest Cenozoic descendants occupied a variety of dietary niches. It is hypothesized that this dietary radiation resulted from the opening of niche space, following the extinction of dinosaurian carnivores and herbivores. We provide the first genomic evidence for the occurrence and timing of this dietary radiation in placental mammals. By comparing the genomes of 107 placental mammals, we robustly infer that chitinase genes (CHIAs), encoding enzymes capable of digesting insect …

Effect Of Tidal Cycling Rate On The Distribution And Abundance Of Nitrogen-Oxidizing Bacteria In A Bench-Scale Fill-And-Drain Bioreactor, Joseph M. Battistelli, Rima B. Franklin, Aaron L. Mills Jan 2018

Effect Of Tidal Cycling Rate On The Distribution And Abundance Of Nitrogen-Oxidizing Bacteria In A Bench-Scale Fill-And-Drain Bioreactor, Joseph M. Battistelli, Rima B. Franklin, Aaron L. Mills

Biology Publications

Most domestic wastewater can be effectively treated for secondary uses by engineered biological systems. These systems rely on microbial activity to reduce nitrogen (N) content of the reclaimed water. Such systems often employ a tidal-flow process to minimize space requirements for the coupling of aerobic and anaerobic metabolic processes. In this study, laboratory-scale tidal-flow treatment systems were studied to determine how the frequency and duration of tidal cycling may impact reactor performance. Fluorescent in situ hybridization and epifluorescence microscopy were used to enumerate the key functional groups of bacteria responsible for nitrification and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), and N-removal efficiency …

The Effects Of Drought On Ammonia-Oxidizing Archaea In Salt Marshes, Hayley Mcmahon Jan 2018

The Effects Of Drought On Ammonia-Oxidizing Archaea In Salt Marshes, Hayley Mcmahon

Biology Honors Papers

Severe droughts are expected to occur with increasing frequency under current climate change models. Droughts conditions lead to changes in the chemistry of salt marsh sediment by raising salinity, decreasing pH, and shifting conditions from anoxic to oxic. These changes have the potential to impact salt marsh microbial communities, including those involved in the nitrogen cycle. Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) carry out the oxidation of ammonia (NH3) to nitrite (NO2−), the first and most rate limiting step of nitrification. I analyzed community composition and abundance of AOA in sediment samples collected from a Connecticut salt marsh during 2016, a severe drought …

Impact Of Severe Drought Conditions On Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacterial Communities In A Connecticut Salt Marsh, Jack Beltz Jan 2018

Impact Of Severe Drought Conditions On Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacterial Communities In A Connecticut Salt Marsh, Jack Beltz

Biology Honors Papers

Salt marsh ecosystems exist along a boundary between fresh and saline waterways, and their function is regulated by a variety of physical and chemical cycles. Microbial communities hold many important roles as mediators in these cycles, and like other aspects of the ecosystem are sensitive to changes in their environment. Climate change is expected to bring many obstacles for salt marshes around the world, one being periods of sustained drought. In this study we investigate the impact that a severe seasonal drought had on the abundance and community composition of microbes involved in nitrogen cycling, specifically ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). An …

Biomimetic Macromolecules For Macrophage Targeting And Modulation, Joshua Whited Jan 2018

Biomimetic Macromolecules For Macrophage Targeting And Modulation, Joshua Whited

ETD Archive

Carbohydrate recognition has come to the forefront of biological aiming to uncover the mechanisms of physiological and pathological processes. Cell surface glycans are involved in processes including cellular adhesion, cell signaling, and immune response. A new approach for profiling cell surface glycans has great potential for a wide range of biomedical applications. Lectins have been conventionally used to determine the structure and function of glycoproteins, however, their numbers are still restricted compared to the number of glycan structures. Boronic acid has proven a remarkable small molecule capable of binding diols in aqueous solution. This interaction indicates boronic acid derived molecules …

Relationships Of Native And Exotic Strains Of Phragmites Australis To Wetland Ecosystem Properties, L. A. Volesky, S. Iqbal, J. J. Kelly, Pamela Geddes Jan 2018

Relationships Of Native And Exotic Strains Of Phragmites Australis To Wetland Ecosystem Properties, L. A. Volesky, S. Iqbal, J. J. Kelly, Pamela Geddes

Biology Faculty Publications

Invasions by exotic plant species like Phragmites australis can affect wetlands and the services they provide, including denitrification. Native and exotic Phragmites strains were genetically verified in 2002 but few studies have compared their ecosystem effects. We compared relationships between native and exotic Phragmites and environmental attributes, soil nutrient concentrations, and abundance and activity of soil denitrifying bacteria. There were no significant differences for any measured variables between sites with exotic and native strains. However, there were significant positive correlations between native Phragmites stem density and soil nutrient concentrations and denitrification rates. Furthermore, denitrifying bacterial abundance was positively correlated with …

Using Environmental Dna And Occupancy Modeling To Examine Drivers Of Eastern Hellbender Extirpation And Sampling Method Efficiency In West Virginia, Sean Michael Wineland Jan 2018

Using Environmental Dna And Occupancy Modeling To Examine Drivers Of Eastern Hellbender Extirpation And Sampling Method Efficiency In West Virginia, Sean Michael Wineland

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Amphibian population declines and range constrictions are widespread but poorly understood. Effective conservation planning relies on accurate distribution data to develop a fundamental understanding of causal changes in species distributions. However, conventional detection methods for cryptic and elusive amphibians suffer from imperfect detection. Environmental DNA (eDNA) has emerged as an innovative and powerful conservation tool for detecting aquatic species presence; however comparative studies aimed at fully understanding eDNA detection probabilities are lacking. In this study, I used environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling methods and detailed historical records to identify drivers of extirpation and sampling method efficiency for an imperiled, long-lived giant …

A Characterization Of West Virginia Coyotes (Canis Latrans) Utilizing Skull Morphology, Katharina E. Scholer Jan 2018

A Characterization Of West Virginia Coyotes (Canis Latrans) Utilizing Skull Morphology, Katharina E. Scholer

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Coyotes (Canis latrans) are now found throughout North and Central America, but before European colonization were restricted to west of the Mississippi. Migration occurred in two major paths to the East; north over the Great Lakes (through Canada) and south below the Great Lakes. The location of these routes is significant because those migrating north interbred with the wolves that reside there. These hybrid animals are larger and behaviorally different from their western counterparts. It is possible to differentiate these hybrids morphologically and genetically. Hybrids are known to be located in Maine, New York, and Pennsylvania, but the interest of …

In fish, protein-coding and noncoding genes involved in muscle atrophy are not fully characterized. In this study, we characterized coding and noncoding genes involved in gonadogenesis-associated muscle atrophy, and investigated the potential functional interplay between these genes. Using RNA- Seq, we compared expression pattern of mRNAs, long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs of atrophying skeletal muscle from gravid females and control skeletal muscle from age-matched sterile individuals. A total of 852 mRNAs, 1,160 lncRNAs and 28 microRNAs were differentially expressed (DE) between the two groups. Muscle atrophy appears to be mediated by many genes encoding ubiquitin- proteasome system, autophagy related …

Ontogeny Of Juvenile Freshwater Pearl Mussels, Margaritifera Margaritifera (Bivalvia: Margaritiferidae), Louise Lavictoire, Andrew D. Ramsey, Evelyn A. Moorkens, Graham Souch, M. Christopher Barnhart

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

The gills of juvenile freshwater bivalves undergo a complex morphogenesis that may correlate with changes in feeding ecology, but ontogenic studies on juvenile mussels are rare. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the ultrastructure and ontogeny of 117 juvenile freshwater pearl mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera) ranging in age from 1-44 months and length from 0.49-8.90 mm. Three stages of gill development are described. In Stage 1 (5-9 inner demibranch filaments), only unreflected inner demibranch filaments were present. In Stage 2 (9-17 inner demibranch filaments), inner demibranch filaments began to reflect when shell length exceeded 1.13 mm, at 13-16 months old. …

Audiobook Of A World From Dust, Ben Mcfarland

Faculty Open Access Books

A World From Dust is a popular science book about the chemical sequence behind the evolution of creation.

It’s about how geology, biology, and chemistry worked together over billions of years, providing a hidden order under the random flow of genes and lava and water.

It’s about the chemical job that each element takes up in life, and how that job is predictable from its place on the periodic table.

It can be told as the story of many elements: how iron and sulfur gave a spark of life; how manganese was a key for oxygen; and how copper and …

ABC transporters are essential for cellular transport; contribute to maintain the homeostasis of the cells. Generally, ABC transporters are multi-subunit; contain essential cytoplasmic factors which are critical to ATP hydrolysis activity. In this paper, we would like to take a closer look to Mrub_1283, Mrub_1284 and Mrub_1285, three consecutive genes in Meiothermus ruber genome. We hypothesize that these genes are in the same operon and encode for ABC glycine/ betaine transporters. To confirm our hypothesis, we utilizes several bioinformatics tools to predict the potential function of Mrub_1283, Mrub_1284 and Mrub_1285 and to search for their orthologs in Escherichia coli genome. …

Research has confirmed that elevated synthetic estrogen in surface waters can lead to intersex characteristics in aquatic vertebrates. Unmetabolized antibiotics, hormones from animal wastes, including humans, and discarded pharmaceuticals are some ways synthetic estrogen enter aquatic ecosystems through the release of contaminated effluents. In this investigation, the Agilent 1260 Infinity HPLC was used to detect the possible presence of 17-α-ethindyl estradiol in effluents released from the Chattanooga Sewer Treatment Plant. Results were analyzed by comparing HPLC chromatograms from effluent and spiked samples. We detected a possible peak of synthetic estrogen in the effluent samples with a retention rate of 6 …

Rickettsia buchneri (formerly Rickettsia endosymbiont of Ixodes scapularis, or REIS) is an obligate intracellular endoparasite of the black-legged tick, the primary vector of Lyme disease in North America. It is noteworthy among the rickettsiae for its relatively large genome (1.8 Mb) and extraordinary proliferation of mobile genetic elements (MGEs), which comprise nearly 35% of its genome. Previous analysis of the R. buchneri genome identified several integrative conjugative elements named Rickettsiales amplified genomic elements (RAGEs); the composition of these RAGEs suggests that continued genomic invasions by MGEs facilitated the proliferation of rickettsial genes related to an intracellular lifestyle. In this study, …

Various diseases are relevant to the abnormal blood flow in tissue. Diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) is an emerging technology to extract the blood flow index (BFI) from light electric field temporal autocorrelation data. To account for tissue heterogeneity and irregular geometry, we developed an innovative DCS algorithm (i.e., the Nth order linear algorithm, or simply the NL algorithm) previously, in which the DCS signals are fully utilized through iterative linear regressions. Under the framework of NL algorithm, the BFI to be extracted is significantly influenced by the linear regression approach adopted. In this study, three approaches were proposed and evaluated …

Broad neuronal classes are surprisingly heterogeneous across many parameters, and subclasses often exhibit partially overlapping traits including transmitter coexpression. However, the extent to which transmitter coex- pression occurs in predictable, consistent patterns is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that pairwise coexpression of GABA and multiple neuropeptide families by olfactory local interneurons (LNs) of the moth Manduca sexta is highly heterogeneous, with a single LN capable of expressing neuropeptides from at least four peptide families and few instances in which neuropeptides are consistently coexpressed. Using computational modeling, we demonstrate that observed coexpression patterns cannot be explained by independent probabilities of expres- sion …

Detection of coding/functional SNPs that change the biological function of a gene may lead to identification of putative causative alleles within QTL regions and discovery of genetic markers with large effects on phenotypes. This study has two-fold objectives, first to develop, and validate a 50K transcribed gene SNP-chip using RNA-Seq data. To achieve this objective, two bioinformatics pipelines, GATK and SAMtools, were used to identify ∼21K transcribed SNPs with allelic imbalances associated with important aquaculture production traits including body weight, muscle yield, muscle fat content, shear force, and whiteness in addition to resistance/susceptibility to bacterial cold-water disease (BCWD). SNPs ere …
