Turkish Journal of Biology

Verbena officinalis L. (vervain) is a medicinal plant that shows several biological activities, including antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, analgesic, neuroprotective, hypnotic/sedative, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, anticancer, cicatrizant, and antioxidant. This report describes an efficient plant regeneration system for V. officinalis via adventitious shoot development from stem internode and petiole explants. Stem internode explants were more effective than petiole explants in terms of both the number of shoots per explant and the percentages of explants forming shoots. Increasing benzyladenine (BA) concentrations steadily increased shoot formation up to 13.32 µM, but 22.22 µM BA caused a sharp decrease. The highest number of shoots (17.1 shoots per …

Ultrastructural Changes In Rat Liver By Methyleugenol And Evaluation Of Some Biochemical Parameters, Ayşegül Çerkezkayabeki̇r, Gülnur Kizilay, Fi̇gen Ertan

Turkish Journal of Biology

The present study investigated the effect of methyleugenol, a food flavoring and fragrance agent, on the livers of laboratory rats. Doses of 10 and 30 mg/kg/day of methyleugenol (in 0.5% methylcellulose) were administered intragastrically (IG) to 2 dose groups for 10 days alongside a control group (n = 10 for each group). Gains in body weight were not statistically significant for either dose. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities decreased (P < 0.05) for both dose groups, but AST (aspartate aminotransferase) activity decreased significantly (P < 0.05) only in the 30 mg/kg/day methyleugenol dose group. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity did not change significantly in either group. The total amount of glucose remained unchanged, but glycogen in the liver decreased significantly (P < 0.05) in the 30 mg/kg/day methyleugenol dose group. There was also an increase of swelling in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum sacs (sER), electron dense accumulations in the sER, cytoplasmic vacuolization, a slight increase of mitochondria and lysosomes, and invaginations in the nucleus membranes of hepatocytes. Extensions in bile canaliculi and increasing microvilli of bile canaliculi in the liver were also observed. These findings indicate the ultrastructural toxic effect of methyleugenol on rat livers in 10 and 30 mg/kg/day doses. Therefore, we may speculate that the toxic effect of methyleugenol needs to be examined in detail.

Analysis Of Eurycea Hybrid Zone In Eastern Missouri, Bonnie Jean Beasley

Masters Theses

"Evolutionary mechanisms are often difficult to observe in action because evolution generally works slowly over time. Hybrid zones provide a unique opportunity to observe many evolutionary processes, such as reinforcement, because of the rapid changes that tend to occur in these zones. Salamanders provide an ideal model for examining the rapid changes in populations that result from hybridization because many closely-related species lack reproductive barriers. In Missouri, a well-documented hybridization zone exists among the two subspecies Eurycea longicauda longicauda (long-tailed salamander) and E. L. melanopleura (dark-sided salamander). These salamanders inhabit caves, limestone creek beds, and abandoned mine shafts. A closely …

The Effect Of Ascorbic Acid And H_2o_2 Treatment On The Stability Of Anthocyanin Pigments In Berries, Elham Nikkhah, Masoud Khaiamy, Reza Heidary, Ali Sorayaie Azar

Turkish Journal of Biology

Anthocyanins are natural pigments widely distributed in nature. Anthocyanin pigment molecules are a subclass of flavonoids. They are responsible for the red, purple, and blue colors observed in many flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Fruits and berries are the main sources of anthocyanins in nature. Anthocyanins are thought to contribute to the nutritive value of fruits and berries due to their antioxidative, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-angiogenic properties. Anthocyanins can also improve the nutritional value of processed foods by preventing the oxidation of lipids and proteins. As such, identification of agents that can affect the stability of anthocyanins and the protective effect …

Turkish Journal of Biology

Fifteen species belonging to 3 genera (Onobrychis, Hedysarum and Sartoria), collected from different geographical regions of Turkey were studied for the polypeptide patterns of their seed storage proteins. The variability of seed storage proteins was analysed by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). As many as 72 bands were scored and a dendrogram was constructed using UPGMA (unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean). The dendrogram of the electrophoretic protein profiles of seeds showed 2 main clusters. While the first cluster with further subclusters included Onobrychis species, the second cluster included Sartoria and Hedysarum species present in 2 separate subclusters. …

Callus Culture From Leaf Blade, Nodal, And Runner Segments Of Three Strawberry (Fragaria Sp.) Clones, Manosh Kumar Biswas, Monzur Hossain

Turkish Journal of Biology

The present investigation was conducted to study the effects of auxin and cytokinin on callus induction from leaf blade, nodal, and runner segments of 3 strawberry clones. Among the 32 media combinations tested, 4.0 mg/L NAA + 1.5 mg/L IBA yielded the highest percentage of callus in all types of explants. The rate of adventitious shoot regeneration from callus was also influenced by explant type and concentration of BA in MS medium. The highest shoot regeneration rate was observed in leaf derived callus of clone Rabi-01 on media having 3 mg/L BA. Adventitious shoots were rooted, acclimatized, and subsequently transplanted …
