Salmonella And Paracolon Species Isolated From The Wild Brown Rat, Rattus Norvegicus, In The City Of Richmond, Virginia, John Miles Sharpley

Master's Theses

The importance of bacteria as a cause of serious intestinal diseases in man and. other animals has been recognized since the early days of the science of bacteriology. Of those forms usually associated with intestinal disturbances in man, the species considered most important are those belonging in the Salmonella group, the Paracolon group, and the Shigella group. Also, it has been known since the early part of this century that the conman rat serves as an important vector for the dissemination of infectious organisms. For example, standard textbooks list rats as primary vectors of enteric bacteria. However. there has been …

A Study Of The Effects Of Some Chemical And Physical Factors On Plankton In An Artificial Lake, Archie Garnett Smither Aug 1948

A Study Of The Effects Of Some Chemical And Physical Factors On Plankton In An Artificial Lake, Archie Garnett Smither

Master's Theses

It has been well established that chemical and physical factors exert a marked effect upon the plankton population in bodies of water. However, the literature reveals the fact that the same chemical and physical factors not only produce a different effect upon plankton in different bodies of water, but are not consistent in their effects upon plankton in like bodies of water. For example, Birge and Juday (1911) made a study of 150 lakes, not widely separated in distance or varying in topographic conditions. These lakes were also of the same age, yet all were individual as to the amount …

Scientific Illustration, Alys Leontine D'Avesne

Master's Theses

It may be somewhat difficult at first glance to understand the essential character of the relationship of art to science, and especially to the natural sciences. Without illustration it would be impossible either to learn or to teach these sciences . Drawings are needed in the classroom and in the laboratory to aid the teacher, and they are perhaps even more important in individual research where there is no teacher present to guide and to instruct the student .

Scientific illustration is not only an aid to teaching, it teaches by itself when properly executed. In cases where verbal description …

The Morphology And Histology Of The Virginia Oyster, Ostrea Virginica, Lister, Lewis Charles Goldstein Apr 1940

The Morphology And Histology Of The Virginia Oyster, Ostrea Virginica, Lister, Lewis Charles Goldstein

Master's Theses

The oyster has been known and used commercially since before the Roman and Greek civilizations, and reports of investigations pertaining to it can be found dating back almost to that period. Because of the commercial value of the oyster, most of the study of' the animal has dealt with its economic importance. Definite information concern ing the morphology and microscopic . structure of this Mollusc, therefore, is scarce. To be sure, there is an abundance of miscellaneous literature, but no systematic microscopic study has been reported. T. C . Nelson (1938) states, "A critical survey of the abundant and scattered …
