Model Of Dietary Fiber Utilization By Small Mammalian Herbivores, With Empirical Results For Neotoma, Felisa A. Smith, Keith E. Justice
Biology Faculty & Staff Publications
Allometric considerations have suggested that small herbivores are inefficient at or incapable of extracting energy from the microbial fermentation of structural carbohydrates. This notion is at odds with accumulating empirical evidence that demonstrates well-developed fiber digestion abilities for a number of small rodent genera. To examine the apparent inconsistency, we have constructed a model of plant fiber utilization tailored specifically for hindgut fermenters. Computer simulations provide estimates of fiber and overall dry-matter digestibilities as a function of body size, energy demand, and diet. Our calculations indicate that small mammals can obtain significant benefit from fiber fermentation, especially at moderate fiber …

Evolution Of Life History Variation Among Female Mammals, Eric Charnov
Evolution Of Life History Variation Among Female Mammals, Eric Charnov
Biology Faculty & Staff Publications
A unified approach is developed for the evolutionary structure of mammalian life histories; it blends together three basic components (individual growth or production rate as a function of body size, natural selection on age of maturity, and stable demography) to predict both the powers and the intercepts of the scaling allometry of life history variables to adult size. The theory also predicts the signs (+, -) of the correlations between life history variables when body size is held constant. Finally, the approach allows us to eliminate body size to predict the dimensionless relationships between the life history variables themselves.

Community Structure Of The Arthropods Of Carlsbad Cavern Emphasizing Raphidophoridae Of The Genus Ceuthophilus, Diana Northup
Community Structure Of The Arthropods Of Carlsbad Cavern Emphasizing Raphidophoridae Of The Genus Ceuthophilus, Diana Northup
Biology ETDs
Censusing of cave arthropods has been carried out in three areas of Carlsbad Cavern from 1984 to 1987, using pitfall traps. The areas represent a food rich area (Bat Cave, a guano community with high species richness), a food poor area (Sand Passage, an area deep within the cave, with low species richness), and an area with moderate food resources (Left Hand Tunnel, an area near the Underground Lunch Room). Species diversity, as estimated by Hill's N2, showed that Left Hand Tunnel had values closer to one ( dominance by one species), while Sand Passage and Bat Cave …
