Ultrastructural Changes In Rat Liver By Methyleugenol And Evaluation Of Some Biochemical Parameters, Ayşegül Çerkezkayabeki̇r, Gülnur Kizilay, Fi̇gen Ertan

Turkish Journal of Biology

The present study investigated the effect of methyleugenol, a food flavoring and fragrance agent, on the livers of laboratory rats. Doses of 10 and 30 mg/kg/day of methyleugenol (in 0.5% methylcellulose) were administered intragastrically (IG) to 2 dose groups for 10 days alongside a control group (n = 10 for each group). Gains in body weight were not statistically significant for either dose. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities decreased (P < 0.05) for both dose groups, but AST (aspartate aminotransferase) activity decreased significantly (P < 0.05) only in the 30 mg/kg/day methyleugenol dose group. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity did not change significantly in either group. The total amount of glucose remained unchanged, but glycogen in the liver decreased significantly (P < 0.05) in the 30 mg/kg/day methyleugenol dose group. There was also an increase of swelling in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum sacs (sER), electron dense accumulations in the sER, cytoplasmic vacuolization, a slight increase of mitochondria and lysosomes, and invaginations in the nucleus membranes of hepatocytes. Extensions in bile canaliculi and increasing microvilli of bile canaliculi in the liver were also observed. These findings indicate the ultrastructural toxic effect of methyleugenol on rat livers in 10 and 30 mg/kg/day doses. Therefore, we may speculate that the toxic effect of methyleugenol needs to be examined in detail.

Turkish Journal of Biology

The effects of sub-chronic administration of an aqueous extract of Ficus bengalensis stem bark on hematological and biochemical parameters in rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes were evaluated. The possible protective effect of the F. bengalensis (500 mg/kg of body weight per day) extract on STZ-induced changes was evaluated over 12 weeks. The parameters evaluated were plasma proteins, including total protein albumin and globulin, non-protein nitrogenous substances, including urea, uric acid, and creatinine, and hematological indices, including total hemoglobin content, erythrocytes, leucocytes, and platelets counts. The aqueous extract had a significant (P < 0.05) protective effect against STZ-induced changes in terms of the markers of protein metabolism and hematological indices. Furthermore, increases in levels of non-protein nitrogenous substances were normalized in response to the administration of the extract. Thus, the aqueous extract of F. bengalensis had a significant protective effect on STZ-induced changes to biochemical and hematological parameters in the diabetic rats.

The effects of hypoxia on the activities of some enzymes of antioxidative, non- enzymatic scavenging system, membrane permeability, lipid peroxidation, and some reactive oxygen species (ROS) in leaves of Zea mays were investigated. Samples were taken 48, 96, 144, and 192 h after the start of hypoxia treatment. A 192 h hypoxia treatment resulted in a significant rise in membrane permeability, lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde level), and the production of hydrogen peroxide (H_2O_2) and superoxide (O_2^-) in maize leaves. A short duration of hypoxia enhanced the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1), catalase (CAT; EC 1.11.1.6), ascorbate peroxidase (APX; EC …

Determination Of Mycorrhizae Interactions And Pathogenicity Of Rhizoctonia Solani Kühn Isolated From Strawberry And Xanthium Strumarium, Ayşenur Bayözen, Ayhan Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Biology

The effects of mycorrhizal fungi on the disease severity of Rhizoctonia solani Kühn., and the role of mycorrhizal fungi on strawberry (Fragaria vesca L.) growth were investigated. Strawberry seedlings were inoculated with BioOrganics as a mycorrhizal preparation against 2 R. solani isolates, which were isolated from strawberry (RsFv) and Xanthium strumarium (RsXs). The highest disease severity in strawberry roots was observed after inoculation with RsFv at a rate of 67%. On the other hand, the lowest disease severity in strawberry roots was at 31% for 15BRsFv (15 days before inoculation with BioOrganics and RsFv). Similarly, the highest disease severity in …
