A Mathmatical Model Of Primary Productivity And Limnological Patterns In Lake Mead, Lorne G. Everett Sep 1972

A Mathmatical Model Of Primary Productivity And Limnological Patterns In Lake Mead, Lorne G. Everett

Publications (WR)

The temporal and spatial changes in chemical and biological properties of Lake Mead have been investigated, thereby indicating the sources of water pollution and the time of highest pollution potential. Planktonic organisms have been shown to indicate the presence of water problems. Macro- and micro-nutrient analyses have shown that primary productivity is not inhibited by limiting concentrations. A mathematical model has been developed, tested with one set of independent data, and shown worthy of management utility. Although the model works very well for the Lake Mead area, the physical reality of the Multiple Linear Regression equation should be tested on …

Lipids Of Fungal Spores, Identification And Metabolism, Jim L. Bushnell Aug 1972

Lipids Of Fungal Spores, Identification And Metabolism, Jim L. Bushnell

Theses and Dissertations

The lipids of the spores of the Basidiomycetes: Ustilago bullata, Lycoperdon perlatum and Calvatia gigantea were investigated. The spores of U. bullata were found to have hydrocarbons ranging from C_9 to C_24, methyl esters of fatty acids ranging from C_14 to C_24, and free fatty acids from C_14 to C_24. The spores of L. perlatum were found to have few hydrocarbons (C_22 being the predominent one); no methyl esters were detected and the fatty acids were from C_15 to C_18. Long chain aldehydes (C_30) were also detected in low concentration. At the ultrastructural level the Lycoperdon spores were found to …

Enzymatic Synthesis Of Oligoribonucleotides Of Defined Base Sequence, Bronwyn Geraldine Hughes Jul 1972

Enzymatic Synthesis Of Oligoribonucleotides Of Defined Base Sequence, Bronwyn Geraldine Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

A possible method for the synthesis of ordered oligoribonucleotides involves primer-dependent polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPase) synthesis using the RNase A or T1 resistant N-cyclohexyl-N'-β(4-methylmorpholinium)ethylcarbodiimide chloride (CMC-Cl) derivatives of uridine or guanosine containing primers. Thus, CMC-UpA, CMC-GpA, CMC-UpCpC, CMC-GpApC, and ApApApApU-CMC were prepared and studied as primers for PNPase in 15 min 14C-ADP polymerization reactions and also in 6-10 hr synthesis reactions. The CMC-primers were not suitable primers for PNPase catalyzed synthesis reactions for either time. The PNPases used in such studies were contaminated with nuclease that showed the following order of susceptibility: UpA > CpC, GpA > ApU, ApA. Even a highly purified …

On The Mechanism Of Low-Temperature Termolecular Atomic Recombination, Russell T. Pack, Richard L. Snow, Wesley D. Smith Jan 1972

On The Mechanism Of Low-Temperature Termolecular Atomic Recombination, Russell T. Pack, Richard L. Snow, Wesley D. Smith

Faculty Publications

A simple theory of gas-phase termolecular atomic recombination kinetics is presented which treats the bound-complex (BC) mechanism in a fashion which parallels the Roberts, Bernstein, and Curtiss resonance theory of the energy-transfer (ET) mechanism. The ET rate constant has a low temperature maximum, but the BC rate constant does not. The contributions of the two mechanisms to the low-temperature recombination of hydrogen atoms, with He, Ar, and H2 as third bodies, are estimated and compared. The presence (absence) of a low-temperature maximum in the observable total rate constant is determined by absence (presence) of bound vibrational levels of the hydrogen-third …

Alteration In The Expression Of Compartmentation: In Vitro Studies / D. D. Clarke And S. Berl, Donald Dudley Clarke Phd, Soll Berl

Glutamic acid and glutamine are present in unusually large concentrations in brain. The only known enzymatic mechanism which has been reported for the synthesis of glutamine is that catalysed by glutamine synthetase (E.C.6.3.1.2). These amino acids provide a very useful probe for studying precursor-product relationships in brain tissue in vivo. It is evident that the non-steady state situation presented by injection of a single dose of inhibitor followed by a tracer dose of a labelled precursor at some later time-a practice which has been used extensively in previous attempts to clarify the effects of metabolic inhibitors-makes it rather difficult to …

Guinea pig brain slices were incubated in media in which Li+ replaced part of the Na+. Leakage of glutamic acid, glutamine, aspartic acid and GABA into the media were increased markedly; glutamic acid was most affected. The uptake of [1-14C]acetate was decreased in the presence of Li+. Of the amino acids related to the citric acid cycle the labeling of glutamine was most affected. The presence of 100% O2 counteracts in part the Li+ effects. The results were interpretable on the basis of the compartmentation of citric acid cycle metabolism in brain. It is suggested that the pool of 'transmitter' …

The Structure Of An Ornithine-Containing Lipid From Thiobacillus Thiooxidans, Herman W. Knoche, Jessup M. Shively Jan 1972

The Structure Of An Ornithine-Containing Lipid From Thiobacillus Thiooxidans, Herman W. Knoche, Jessup M. Shively

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The structure of an ornithine-containing lipid from Thio-bacillus thiooxidans

has been elucidated. Methanolysis of

the lipid released methyl cis-ll,lZ-methylene-Z-hydroxyoctadecanoate.

Acid hydrolysis of the residue yielded ornithine

and a mixture of fatty acids, the major components of

which were 3-hydroxyhexadecanoic and 2-hexadecenoic

acids. Identification of the 3-hydroxy fatty acid was based

on the thin layer chromatographic mobilities of the acid, its

methyl ester, the methyl ether, and acetate derivatives of its

methyl ester, on the equivalent chain lengths of the derivatives

of the acid and the acid obtained by oxidation of the

natural acid with permanganate, and on mass spectral studies. …

Factors Regulating The Growth Of Algae In Continuous Culture In Diluted Secondary Sewage Treatment Plant Effluent And Subsequent Biodegradability, Edward G. Foree, Caroline P. Wade Jan 1972

Factors Regulating The Growth Of Algae In Continuous Culture In Diluted Secondary Sewage Treatment Plant Effluent And Subsequent Biodegradability, Edward G. Foree, Caroline P. Wade

KWRRI Research Reports

Heterogeneous algal cultures were grown in laboratory continuous culture in continuous flow, completely mixed chemostats in secondary sewage treatment plant effluent diluted to give an ammonia nitrogen concentration of 10 mg/1. Variables were lighting, pH, carbon dioxide availability, and hydraulic residence time.

Optimum growth occurred under pH 7.0, excess CO2, and continuous lighting conditions. The availability of artificially supplied excess CO2 greatly increased the mass (standing crop) at steady-state over that produced under otherwise identical conditions for all residence times studied. For the case of excess CO2 availability, the nitrogen concentration in the algal cells regulated …

Form And Level Of Coumarin In Deer's Tongue, Trilisa Odoratissima, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, R. C. Leffel Jan 1972

Form And Level Of Coumarin In Deer's Tongue, Trilisa Odoratissima, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, R. C. Leffel

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Fresh leaves of deer’s tongue contain large quantities (more than 10% of the dry weight, in some cases) of o-hydroxycinnamic acid (o-HCA). Both cis- and trans-o-HCA are present, and both isomers exist in the fresh tissue predominantly as glucosides. Cured deer’s tongue leaves contain relatively high levels of coumarin and lower amounts of o-HCA glucosides. It is probable that during the curing process cis-o-HCA glucoside is hydrolyzed by an endogenous β-glucosidase, and that the liberated cis-o-HCA lactonizes spontaneously to form coumarin.

Histochemical Investigation On The Distribution And Localization Of Digestive Enzymes In The Alimentary Canal Of The Caddis Fly Larvae, Brachycentrus Occidentalis Banks, Walter B. Hollow Aug 1971

Histochemical Investigation On The Distribution And Localization Of Digestive Enzymes In The Alimentary Canal Of The Caddis Fly Larvae, Brachycentrus Occidentalis Banks, Walter B. Hollow

All Master's Theses

A histochemical study of the digestive enzymes of Brachycentrus occidentalis Banks showed that the insect contains the enzymes necessary to utilize the major foods, viz., carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. There appears to be a correlation between the types of digestive enzymes found and the type of food eaten by the larvae. Values of pH for extracts from the different parts of the digestive system were: foregut, 7.6-8.4, midgut, 7.6-8.4, and hindgut, 7.0-7.6. Living micro-organisms in the gut lumen was also shown.

The Regulatory Effects Of Certain S-Triazine Compounds On The Nutritive Composition Of Seeds And Leaves Of The Pea (Pisum Sativum L.) And Sweet Corn (Zea Mays L.) And Responses Of Metabolic Systems, Ming-Tsung Wu May 1971

The Regulatory Effects Of Certain S-Triazine Compounds On The Nutritive Composition Of Seeds And Leaves Of The Pea (Pisum Sativum L.) And Sweet Corn (Zea Mays L.) And Responses Of Metabolic Systems, Ming-Tsung Wu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The study was conducted to investigate the influence of eight s-triazine compounds--simazine, atrazine, terbutryne, GS-14254, propazine, prometryne, prometone, and ametryne--on the composition of seeds of peas and sweet corn through soil and foliar application. In order to understand the mechanism of the effects of these a-triazines on protein accumulation, the responses of the metabolic systems of pea and sweet corn seedlings to s-triazine treatment was studied with emphasis on the stimulation of certain enzymes, and the changes in the rates of incorporation of 14C-L-leucine (U) into soluble protein. In addition, the effect of simazine on the ultrastructure …

Autoradiographic and liquid scintillation counting techniques were utilized to measure the ultraviolet (UV)-stimulated incorporation of radioactive thymidine during repair replication of the UV-damaged deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of irradiated peripheral blood lymphocytes from 4 patients w ith xeroderma pigmentosum (XDP) and from normal donors. Lymphocytes from 3 of the 4 patients had a markedly decreased rate of incorporation soon after irradiation in comparison with the rate obtained with normal donors' lymphocytes. However, the duration of incorporation into these 3 patients' lymphocytes was prolonged, so that XDP lymphocytes appear eventually to incorporate as much total thymidine as normal lymphocytes. Lymphocytes from the …

The Nature Of Salmonella Phage P3 Modification And Restriction By Growth In Escherichia Coli, Clark A. Pearson Jan 1971

The Nature Of Salmonella Phage P3 Modification And Restriction By Growth In Escherichia Coli, Clark A. Pearson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Salmonella potsdam group B bacteriophage P3, which grows in the rough variant strain of S. potsdam (SP2-R) and E. coli KCS11, KW117, and C+/L with similar efficiencies, was restricted by SP2-R after a passage though E. coli. The entrance of restricted E. coli-grown phage DNA into nonpermissive SP2-R cells was confirmed by the finding that after adsorption of restricted 32P-labeled P3-C1·C+/L to SP2-R and removal of the adsorbed phage heads from cells, 80.3% of the labeled DNA activity sedimented with the cells. Thus restricted P3 DNA …

Micronutrients And Biological Patterns In Lake Mead, Hasan K. Qashu, Lorne G. Everett, J. S. Carlson, Bureau Of Reclamation Jan 1971

Micronutrients And Biological Patterns In Lake Mead, Hasan K. Qashu, Lorne G. Everett, J. S. Carlson, Bureau Of Reclamation

Publications (WR)

Progressive increases in concentration of dissolved solids in the Colorado River water from Lake Powell to Imperial Dam seem to alter plankton dynamics and biological productivity of the river. Also, changes in biological productivity and micronutrients concentrations occur within the same reservoir. Development of a digital simulation model to predict micronutrients concentrations and biological productivity is necessary for diagnosing changes in plankton population and effluent-carrying capacity of the system. The objectives of the study are: (1) to determine trace metal balance at different locations in Lake Mead, (2) to measure biological productivity and conduct plankton population counts at each sampling …

High-Pressure Phase Studies On Sodium–Potassium Alloys, D. Ray Anderson, J. Bevan Ott, Rex J. Goates, H. Tracy Hall

Faculty Publications

The solid–liquid phase diagrams were investigated to 60 kbar for elemental sodium, potassium, and various sodium–potassium alloys. The data for Na and K are in general agreement with those of earlier workers. In the alloy system the temperatures of both the peritectic and eutectic halts increase as the pressure increases, but with different slopes, so that the two invariant points merge at approximately 35 kbar. Above this pressure, two halts are again observed. One increases with increasing pressure, and the other decreases with increasing pressure up to 55 kbar, where it abruptly starts increasing again. Melting points for samples in …

The Effects Of 2-Chloro-4-Ethylamino-6-Isopropylamino-S-Triazine (Atrazine) On The Activities Of Certain Calvin Cycle Enzymes In Barley And Corn, L. Chris Harrison

Theses and Dissertations

Atrazine (2-chloro-4, ethylamino-6-isopropylaminos- triazine) applied to Hordium vulgare L. variety barbless in low concentrations (0.001, 0.01, 0.1 uM) was shown to in-- crease the activity of D-ribulose-1, 5-diphosphate carboxylase (RuDPCase) and phosphoribulokinase (PRuK) up to 23% and 30% respectively and increase the amount of chlorophyll and extractable protein up to 18% and 21% respectively over the control plants. These results indicate that sub-toxic levels of atrazine significantly stimulate plant growth. Barley plants given higher concentrations of atrazine (1.0 and 10 uM) showed up to a 78% and 42% decrease in the activity of RuDPCase and PRuK respectively as well as …

The Enzymatic Oxidation Of Aldehydes By Xanthine Oxidase, Duane Beal Gregory Jun 1970

The Enzymatic Oxidation Of Aldehydes By Xanthine Oxidase, Duane Beal Gregory

All Master's Theses

As early as sixty years ago, the existence of an enzyme from mammalian tissues which catalyzed the oxidation of xanthine and hypoxanthine was recognized. The name given the enzyme was derived from its earliest recognized action, hence xanthine oxidase. Although little is known about the biological functions of the enzyme, the high affinity shown for xanthine and hypoxanthine may indicate that these are the most significant substrates biologically.

Asymptotic Evaluation Of Wkb Matrix Elements. Ii. Use Of Langer's Uniform Asymptotic Wavefunctions, Wesley D. Smith, Russell T. Pack

Faculty Publications

An improvement in a previous procedure for the analytic asymptotic evaluation of integrals arising in the quantum-mechanical theory of inelastic molecular collisions is presented. The integrals are evaluated using Langer's uniform asymptotic wavefunctions and the higher-order saddle-point or steepest-descents method. It is found that the Langer functions give no better results than WKB functions, but the higher-order steepest-descents corrections produce a marked improvement. The result is a simple method for evaluating a large class of integrals with an error of 0.1%-2.1%.

Compartmentation of glutamate metabolism in the central nervous system has been demonstrated in a number of laboratories using a variety of labeled precursors. The labeling of glutamine is much more rapid than would be expected if the total pool of glutamate in brain is the precursor of glutamine. An obvious suggestion for the origin of this compartmentation is that it reflects glial vs. neuronal relationships. Some evidence in support of this idea has been obtained by Rose using separated neuronal vs. neuropil preparations (J. Neurochem. 17, 809 (1970)). Until recently orain was the only tissue which, after the injection of …

Urea Block Supplements For Stubble, H E. Fels, R. J. Parkin

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THERE was a great deal of controversy throughout the summer of Western Australia's 1969-70 drought over the feeding of supplements other than grain to grazing sheep.

This report summarises some of the experiments carried out by this Department to investigate various artificial means of supplementing sheep grazing stubbles and dry summer pastures.

Further details of the experiments can be obtained by contacting the authors.

The results failed to demonstrate economic responses to urea supplements for grazing sheep.

Urea Or Grain Supplements For Stubble?, H E. Fels

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Three methods of supplementing sheep grazing stubble were compared at Merredin Research Station in 1970. The stubble used in the experiment was left after harvesting a nine-bushel crop of Gamenya wheat which was a weed-free second crop on new land. The land had never been sown to legumes.
