Evidence of breeding rooks feeding on Roman snails (Helix pomatia) and grove snails (Cepaea nemoralis) is presented. Shell dimensions of food remains and intact Roman snails collected in the study area were measured in order to estimate the size and shape of the snails collected by rooks in relation to the food available in the vicinity of the rookery. Smaller and rounder snail shells were collected by rooks than were available in the area around the colony, indicating that the rooks collected most of the snails elsewhere, in forests, gardens, or ruderal areas located near the colony. In this study, the breeding ecology and behaviour of the Great Reed Warbler, Acrocephalus arundinaceus, was studied at Poyrazlar Lake, Turkey. The breeding period started in the first week of May. The incubation period lasted 14 days. As clutch size increased, the diameter of the nests became larger (r = 0.65). Diameters of nests containing different clutch sizes varied significantly from one another (P < 0.01). However, their height did not change (r = 0.24). There was no significant height difference between nests containing different clutch sizes (P > 0.05). As the nests became farther from the shore, the clutch size and the egg weight increased, because mature adults built their nests on the reeds in deeper areas (r = 0.59, r = 0.73). On …

The purpose of the present research was to study the descriptive anatomy of the gill of the mussel Lithophaga lithophaga. Mussels were collected from 2 sites in Antalya Bay, Turkey. Observations using stereomicroscopy and electron microscopy showed that the gills of L. lithophaga consist of homorhabdic filaments, a characteristic of the mytilids. The lamellae have cavities at their laterals in addition to their prominent ciliary structure on the frontal and lateral surfaces. Genetic differences in 2 regions (D-loop and cytochrome b) of mitochondrial DNA in Nannospalax xanthodon and Nannospalax ehrenbergi were determined using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. For 2 species distributed in Anatolia, 94 specimens from 62 populations of Nannospalax xanthodon and 2 populations of Nannospalax ehrenbergi were studied. To reveal genetic differences, the D-loop (626 bp) and cytochrome b (500 bp) regions of mitochondrial DNA were amplified and then cut by 4 different restriction endonuclease enzymes (BamH-I, Taq-I, Alu-I, and Msp-I). Occurrence and distribution of enzyme-producing bacteria in the proximal (PI), middle (MI), and distal (DI) segments of the gastrointestinal tracts of 4 brackish water teleosts (Scatophagus argus, Terapon jarbua, Mystus gulio, and Etroplus suratensis) have been investigated. Data were presented as log viable counts g^{-1} intestine (LVC). The heterotrophic bacterial population had the highest occurrence in the DI regions of all fish species studied except M. gulio. The Helconinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) species recorded from Turkey as of the end of 2012 are listed. The total number of species was determined as 10. Changes in comparison to the previous Turkish fauna are briefly annotated and the distributions for all species in each of the 68 biogeographical provinces are presented. After the publication of our previous fauna, 8 species belonging 2 genera have been recorded as new to Turkey. Subsequent studies reported 10 Diospilini species for the fauna, among which 7 species are distributed only in Asian Turkey and 3 species are distributed in both Asian and European Turkey. …

This paper is the first record of the exotic cichlid, the redbelly tilapia, Tilapia zillii (Gervais, 1848), from natural freshwater bodies of Iran, which has most likely been deliberately released to enhance fish production. The new records extend the geographical distribution range of this exotic fish.

A new species of Zodarion Walckenaer, 1826 is described based on material collected in the Marmara region of Turkey. Morphological and diagnostic characters and illustrations of the genitalia of both sexes are presented, and the differences with the closely related Zodarion turcicum Wunderlich, 1980 are pointed out.

In this study, 5 parasitic wasp species (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Agathidinae) belonging to 2 genera are recorded from Diyarbakır, Mardin, and Şanlıurfa provinces in the Southeast Anatolia Region of Turkey. All are new records for the Southeast Anatolia Region; that of Agathis persephone Nixon, 1986 is a new record for Turkey and its second distribution record in the world.

This study investigates amphibian and reptile species of Madran Mountain. Specimens were collected in September 2011 and April and May 2012. A total of 23 species (3 amphibians and 20 reptiles) were determined. These species are thought to contribute to our knowledge of the Turkish herpetofauna. In addition, a chorotype classification of the species determined on Madran Mountain is given.

Facultative paedomorphosis refers to the simultaneous expression of 2 different phenotypes (i.e. paedomorphic and metamorphic) within the same population. Over the last 6 decades, this phenomenon was reported from only 5 populations of smooth newt Lissotriton vulgaris (Linnaeus, 1758) in Romania. In the spring of 2011, we found a new facultative paedomorphic population. The sample was female-biased, thus suggesting a sex-dependent expression of the paedomorphic phenotype. Most of the populations recorded in Romania were found in permanent water bodies with abundant vegetation.

The Taxonomic Status And Geographic Distribution Of The European Hare (Lepus Europaeus Pallas, 1778) In Turkey (Mammalia: Lagomorpha), Yasi̇n Demi̇rbaş, İrfan Albayrak

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study was based on 125 specimens of hares collected from 61 different localities in Turkey between 2006 and 2010. We present diagnostic characters, pelage coloration, external, cranial and phallic measurements, skull and phallus features, hair structure, and collection localities of hares from Turkey. Additionally, we analyze morphometric variations of 5 regional populations according to the physiography/orography of the study area. Among the morphometric variables, 10 characters (weight, tail length, basal length, condylobasal length, rostral breadth, height of braincase, foramen incisiva length, occipitonasal length, profile length, and mandible length) are found to be significantly different between the populations (ANOVA, P < 0.01). Principal component analysis of 22 morphometric measurements is performed, and 71.56% of total variance is explained through 5 principle components. The Thracian specimen is distinguished from other populations on the first 2 canonical discriminant functions and the cluster dendrogram. The hair structure, as examined by scanning electron microscope, is found to be flattened and imbricate. Our Anatolian specimens are discussed at the subspecies level, comparing them to the relevant literature, and it is concluded that Lepus europaeus in Anatolia is represented by only one subspecies, Lepus europaeus syriacus.

Morphological characteristics of the resting egg, which is important to ensure the continuity of generations, were examined to understand if there were morphologically significant differences among 3 cladoceran species. Species composition and distribution of rumen ciliates were investigated in the rumen contents of 15 domestic goats living in İzmir, Turkey. Nineteen species and 10 morphotypes belonging to 7 genera were identified. The mean number of ciliates was (94.3 ± 33.4) × 10^4 cells mL^{-1} rumen contents, which is higher than that of other goat hosts reported from Turkey and the world. The mean number of ciliate species per host was 9.2 ± 3.4. Entodinium semahatae, E. rostratum, and Ophryoscolex purkynjei m. bifidoquadricinctus are new host records for goats. The rhythms of the Northern Shoveller's (Anas clypeata Linnaeus, 1758) activities during its wintering period in 2 wetlands, Garaet Hadj-Tahar (North-East Algeria) and Garaet Timerganine (Oum El-Bouaghi, Algerian highlands), were studied during 2 wintering seasons in Garaet Hadj-Tahar from November 2007 to March 2008 and November 2008 to March 2009, and in the Timerganine wetland from November 2007 to March 2008. The objective of this study was to determine the abundance and biomass of microbial loop components in 2 lakes of different trophic status. The lakes (mesotrophic and eutrophic ones) were located in the Leczna-Wlodawa Lakeland. The effect of selected physical and chemical water parameters on this group of organisms was also analyzed. In this study, the seasonal distribution of mesozooplankton was investigated between 1999 and 2006 at a station located in the southeastern Black Sea region. A total of 40 cruises were done within the southeastern continental shelf throughout this period in order to collect mesozooplankton samples. A total of 10 mesozooplankton species were identified. Behavioral responses of Cataglyphis aenescens foragers to various monochromatic light stimuli were tested. Foragers were trained to associate lights of 370 (UV), 440 (blue), 540 (green), and 640 nm (red) with a food reward on a circular orientation platform and were then tested to determine the threshold intensity values of these wavelengths they could perceive. Foragers significantly responded to all wavelengths at training intensities but their homeward orientation diminished with decreasing stimulus intensity. A total of 625 fish belonging to 25 fish species were collected from the coastal areas of the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey and were examined for fish parasites. Polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis and densitometry analysis were used to analyze venom extracts of Vipera kaznakovi (16.5, 30, and 55 cm) and Vipera ammodytes (28.5, 36.7, and 51.5 cm) specimens of 3 different lengths. V. kaznakovi specimens were collected from Hopa (Artvin Province); 2 V. ammodytes specimens were from Ağva (İstanbul Province) and the longest one was from Yuvacık (Kocaeli Province). The electropherograms of the venom protein samples showed age-dependent qualitative and quantitative variations.

The effects of temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate, and chlorophyll-\alpha concentration on the body length and egg production of a cyclopoid copepod, Thermocyclops crassus, and a calanoid, Eudiaptomus drieschi, were evaluated. Sampling was conducted in Yenişehir Lake (Hatay, Turkey) on a monthly basis between May 2003 and April 2004. The results of the present study showed that, among the parameters considered, temperature and chlorophyll-\alpha concentration were the main parameters influencing the body length of T. crassus and E. drieschi in Yenişehir Lake. For E. drieschi, egg production was also affected by chlorophyll-\alpha levels.

Reclamation was considered the primary factor that caused coastal wetland loss in China. Along with land conversion, there were different types of land cover on the reclaimed coast. In early March 2012, we selected 5 habitats with different land cover from a reclaimed coastal area at Yancheng City that was diked about 30 years before, and the biodiversity and composition variations in soil macrofauna communities were studied. We found that higher biodiversity values appeared in the uncultivated land, the poplar forest, and the metasequoia forest, while lower values occurred in the wheat farm and bulrush land. In this research, 29 species of 11 amphibian and reptile families were detected in the endorheic basin of Akşehir and Eber. Of these species, 5 are anurans, 1 is a tortoise, 1 is a turtle, 9 are lizards, and 13 are snakes. In addition, the chorotype classification of the species recorded in the study area and their distributions depending on plants are also provided. Selective Predation On Common Voles By Tawny Owls And Long-Eared Owls In Winter And Spring, Linas Balciauskas, Laima Balciauskiene

We studied size preferences of Tawny (Strix aluco) and Long-eared (Asio otus) Owls preying on common voles (Microtus arvalis) in the winter and spring seasons in Central Lithuania. Regression equations were used for body mass estimations. We found that both A. otus and S. aluco preferred larger M. arvalis than the average available in the population (the average body mass of predated individuals was 21.45 ± 0.12 g compared to 16.42 ± 0.16 g of snap-trapped individuals). The distribution of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in Nannospalax ehrenbergi from Iraq was determined for the first time. In the karyotype of N. ehrenbergi the diploid number, fundamental number, and fundamental autosomal number were 52, 76, and 72, respectively. NORs occur in the telomeric regions of submetacentric and acrocentric autosome pairs.

Local Concentration Of Foraging Noctule Bats (Nyctalus Noctula) As A Possible Tool To Assess The Density Of Bats In Large Forest Complexes, Michal Polakowski, Monika Broniszewska, Ireneusz Ruczynski

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Concentrations of at least 600 hunting noctule bats Nyctalus noctula were observed over the artificial shallow reservoir Siemianówka in eastern Poland. The observation indicates that noctule bats concentrate hunting during the presence of vast amounts of insects over the reservoir. We suggest that the high concentrations of noctule bats provide a potential tool for the estimation of local population size or density in large forest complexes.

A Study Of The Genus Empidideicus Becker, 1907 (Diptera: Mythicomyiidae) In Northern Iran, With Description Of A New Species, Saeedeh Hakimian, Ali Asghar Talebi, Babak Gharali, Neal Evenhuis

The genus Empidideicus Becker, 1907 (Diptera: Mythicomyiidae) was studied in 2 provinces of northern Iran (Tehran and Ghazvin provinces). Six species were collected and identified. A new species, Empidideicus formosus Hakimian, Talebi, & Gharali sp. nov., is described and its diagnostic characters are illustrated. This species is closely related to E. unicus Gharali & Evenhuis, 2011, but it is easily distinguished by the almost all-yellow prescutellar area and striated female spermathecal reservoirs.

Sex ratios, size frequency, and reproductive patterns of blood cockle Anadara antiquata were studied from Sonmiani and Phitti Creek, Pakistan, from May 2004 to April 2005. At both sites, the overall sex ratio was significantly in favor of females. The population of A. antiquata at Sonmiani consisted of cockles of 31-80 mm in size and that at Phitti Creek of 21-100 mm in size; however, the majority of specimens were of 51-70 mm in size at both sites.
