A study on the morphological diversity of the genus Mugil of the lagoons Ebrié and Grand-Lahou was carried out in order to differentiate species of Mugilidae in Côte d'Ivoire. Univariate and multivariate analyses of 40 metric and 11 meristic characters identified 3 homogeneous groups. This phenotypic plasticity within the genus Mugil allowed differentiating the species Mugil curema, M. bananensis, and M. cephalus. Eriosomatinae, the gall-forming aphid subfamily, traditionally consists of 3 tribes, Eriosomatini, Pemphigini, and Fordini. However, the phylogenetic relationships among these tribes remain controversial, which has made it difficult to conduct further investigation regarding the evolution of galls and host alternations in this group. We analyzed the molecular phylogeny of the subfamily Eriosomatinae, combining sequences from 2 mitochondrial genes (COI and COII) and 2 nuclear genes (EF-1\alpha and LWO). Birds, including kestrels, constitute a serious impediment to air traffic and are considered pests when they disrupt aviation operations. This study investigated the behaviour of kestrels at Deblin Military Airfield (eastern Poland) in response to bird strike risk management by means of falconry. Trained raptors changed the behaviour of kestrels. During the period when trained raptors worked at the airfield, kestrels were less often found there compared to the control period. During falconry sessions, kestrels perched less often compared to the control period. Kestrels also hovered less during falconry sessions compared to the control period. The reproductive cycle of the traditionally exploited sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa was investigated in the Pagasitikos Gulf (39°18'457\"N, 23°05'869\"E) from June 2007 to July 2008. The study examined the microscopic characteristics of the gonads and was based on maturity index (MI) and oocytes' size-frequency distribution. The reproductive cycle was found to be synchronous between sexes, following an annual pattern. The minimum MI values were recorded in December and January, marking the onset of the reproductive cycle. During the spring, MI increased due to gamete development and proliferation. The goal of the present study was to assess which variables influence the distribution of birds in urban parks. Twenty parks were studied in a city on the Spanish high plateau during the breeding season, and relationships among park characteristics, bird richness, and individual bird presences were established. The park area and tree cover accounted for 73.1% of the variation in bird richness. Although area size was the best predictor of species richness (65% of the variation), some species did not seem to be related to this variable but rather to others, such as vegetation and the degree of park …

Gammarus Komareki Aznavensis Subsp. Nov., A New Amphipod Subspecies From Iran (Amphipoda: Gammaridae), Murat Özbek, Hamidreza Rasouli

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A new subspecies of freshwater amphipod, Gammarus komareki aznavensis subsp. nov., collected from Aznav County (Khalkhal-Ardabil), northwestern Iran, is described and illustrated. The new subspecies belongs to the Gammarus pulex-group and has characteristic features similar to Gammarus komareki. Shorter flagellum of antenna 1, kidney-shaped and bigger eyes, more setose outer margin of the exopodite of uropod 3, and shorter endopodite of uropod 3 are the most obvious features that differ from G. komareki. A detailed morphological description and illustrations of the new subspecies are given and differences from related species are discussed.

Freshwater oligochaetes are studied worldwide because of their relevance as bioindicators in aquatic ecosystems. Nevertheless, species identification is still difficult because it is mainly based on the male reproductive system. The morphology of the chaetae offers an additional set of characters and the fine organization of these elements can help in solving crucial aspects allowing specific attribution. In spite of this, somatic chaetae are poorly investigated under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Length-Weight Relationships Of 14 Fish Species From The Gulf Of Antalya (Northeastern Mediterranean Sea, Turkey), Yaşar Özvarol

Length-weight relationships (LWRs) were determined for 14 fish species from the Gulf Antalya along the northeastern Mediterranean Sea coast of Turkey. Samples were collected using bottom trawl at depths varying from 25 to 150 m. The parameters a and b from the LWR formula W = aL^b were estimated. The values of the exponent b of the length-weight relationships ranged from 2.513 to 3.465. Salinity alterations in freshwater ecosystems greatly affect the survival and life history of zooplankton and, therefore, have an effect on higher trophic levels. Salinity is an essential and critical factor in determining the presence, dominance, and succession of organisms. After being collected in the field, Scapholeberis mucronata and Simocephalus vetulus were brought to the laboratory in water. Under laboratory conditions (24 ± 1 °C; 16:8 h photoperiod), we evaluated the effect of different salt concentrations on the neonates. Fight Or Flight: Agonistic Interactions Between Females Of Acanthogonatus Centralis Goloboff 1995 (Araneae, Mygalomorphae), Nelson Ferretti, Sofía Copperi, Gabriel Pompozzi

Using a resident (R)-intruder (I) paradigm, 132 encounters between female Acanthogonatus centralis were investigated in order to study its intrasexual interactions and aggressiveness. We also examined the effect of presumed increased hunger levels on the incidence of killing and cannibalism. We selected 3 groups with different satiation levels: medium group (M), low group (L), and high group (H). Interactions took place in 79.54% of the trials. Aggression by lunges or bites was observed in 21.96% of encounters. Spiders made foreleg vibrations and touched the silk, which functioned as an aggression-attenuating mechanism. Seasonal changes in the distribution of an important commercial and recreational fish species, Trachurus mediterraneus (Steindachner, 1868), from the family Carangidae were investigated in the Golden Horn Estuary of İstanbul. Environmental conditions were also considered to evaluate distributional patterns in the region. Sampled fish size ranged between 7.5 and 20.1 cm in total length and 3.4 and 86.2 g in total weight during the sampling period. First Record Of Diplodinium Rangiferi Dogiel, 1925 (Ophryoscolecidae, Entodiniomorphida) From Domestic Cattle, Gözde Gürelli̇

Diplodinium rangiferi was observed in rumen contents from a single animal out of 25 cattle surveyed in the area of Kastamonu, Turkey. It constituted 2.7% of the total ciliate population and had a 4% frequency of appearance. The size and percentage occurrence of this species in the present study are compared to those previously reported for other animal hosts living in different geographical locations. This study reports for the first time in Turkey and the world the naturally occurring presence of D. rangiferi in cattle.

Amblyseius bryophilus Karg (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is recorded for the first time for the Turkish fauna. The specimens were collected on bean plants infested with Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) in Ayder plateau, Rize Province, Turkey. In this paper, the redescription of A. bryophilus based on the collected adult females and a key to the Turkish Amblyseius species are given.

Using skeletochronology, the age structure of a breeding population portion of Acanthodactylus boskianus (Daudin, 1802) from the southeast of Turkey was studied for the first time. A total of 21 preserved (9 males, 8 females, and 4 juveniles) specimens were used in this study. According to the analysis of the age structure based on counting lines of arrested growth, ages ranged from 6 to 9 years (mean: 7.44 ± 0.34 years) in males and from 5 to 7 years (mean: 6.13 ± 0.30 years) in females. To elucidate the genetic divergences of several Asian frog taxa, the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene (16S) sequences of 81 populations across 6 Asian countries were analyzed. In total, 109 haplotypes were found, and the concept of a 3% difference in 16S sequence corresponding to species threshold was applied to define candidate amphibian species, for which corroborating evidence, such as morphology, ecological characteristics, and/or nuclear gene data, is required. Although there have been several studies based on the molecular data of green toads, some ambiguities related to the systematics of these toads in Turkey still remain. Thus, we used combined mitochondrial genes (D-loop and 12S ribosomal RNA) to resolve these taxonomic problems. We also applied demographic analysis to elucidate the evolutionary history using these genes. Ecological characteristics of 32 nonmarine ostracod taxa collected from 89 aquatic habitats of Erzincan (Turkey) during the summer of 2006 were evaluated. All of the species are new reports for the area, while Cypria sywulae Meisch, 2000 is a new record for the Turkish ostracod fauna. The first 2 axes of canonical correspondence analysis explain 74.1% of the variance between 15 species and 5 environmental variables. Investigation of habitat affinities of Williams' Jerboa in Ardabil Province showed that its activity pattern and habitat selection are positively correlated with relatively barren areas with slopes of lower than 20% covered by Festuca ovina, Trifolium montanum, and Bromus scoparius. Statistical analysis indicated that the Agropyron-Stipa vegetation type was selected more frequently by the species. This jerboa avoids plant species of the genus Acantholimon because of their lower adaptational value for the species' survival. The spider fauna of Iran is poorly known, particularly in the eastern parts of Iran, where there are still several areas that are not well known. As a result of the study of spider fauna in organic and conventional wheat fields of Khorasan-e-Razavi Province during 2011-2012, a total of 10 families, 18 genera, and 19 species were recorded. Among the specimens, Gnaphosa lucifuga (Walckenaer, 1802) and Uroctea limbata (C.L. Koch, 1843) were new for the Iranian spider fauna.

The examination of specimens collected from various parts of Turkey, mainly from East Anatolia, and an overview of the literature allows us to reach the conclusion that the Melittidae of Turkey are represented by 3 genera, Dasypoda (14 species), Macropis (2 species), and Melitta (9 species), with a total of 25 species including Dasypoda toroki Michez, 2004, a new record for the Turkish fauna. Blackchin guitarfish, Rhinobatos cemiculus, is rather abundantly captured in the eastern tropical Atlantic, especially off Senegal and Mauritania. In the Mediterranean western basin, R. cemiculus is unknown at present off the European shore but is rather frequent off southern areas; conversely, the species occurs throughout the eastern basin. Two large specimens recorded for the first time in İzmir Bay, northern Aegean Sea, are reported and described in this note. These findings constitute the northernmost records of R. cemiculus in both the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, and they significantly extend the species' distribution known to date.

In commercial astaciculture, Diceratocephala boschmai is known to be an ectosymbiont temnocephalid that is widely distributed on Cherax spp., freshwater crayfish native to Australia. This study makes the first report of D. boschmai in samples collected from C. destructor from crayfish farms in Thailand. A description of its internal anatomy is given, and its topographic surface is described using scanning electron microscopy. The phylogeny of D. boschmai in the Rhabdocoela was analyzed for the first time based on 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences. This is the first study on parasite fauna of Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819 in Turkish waters. Mussel samples were collected monthly at 3 sampling stations on the coast of Sinop on the Black Sea in the period between August 2012 and July 2013. A total of 1740 mussels were examined for parasites using standard parasitological investigation procedures. The parasites identified included the following: 2 protozoans, Nematopsis legeri (32.12%) and Peniculistoma mytili (6.72%); 1 turbellarian, Urastoma cyprinae (6.32%); 1 trematode, Parvatrema duboisi (4.54%); and 1 polychaeta, Polydora ciliata (2.24%). Tachinids (Diptera: Tachinidae) Reared From Lepidopterous And Heteropterous Hosts From Some Localities In The Kelkit Valley (Amasya, Tokat, Sivas) Of Turkey, Turgut Atay, Kenan Kara

This study was carried out to determine the tachinid parasitoids of lepidopterous and heteropterous hosts from some localities in the Kelkit Valley (Amasya, Tokat, Sivas) of Turkey. Eleven species belonging to the subfamily Exoristinae and 9 species belonging to the subfamily Phasiinae were reared. Eurygaster maura L. (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae) for Gymnosoma desertorum Rohdendorf and Corizus hyoscyami (L.) (Rhopalidae) for Elomyia lateralis (Meig.) were recorded for the first time as tachinid/host-couples. Additionally, 6 tachinid/host-couples were recorded for the first time from Turkey.

Very few cases of teratological specimens, i.e. specimens displaying morphological abnormalities, have been cited among Platygastridae and Pteromalidae. From the Platygastridae we present 5 cases of symphysocery [A8-A9 in Metaclisis sp.; A3-A5 and A7-A9 in Sceliomorpha sp.; A5-A6 in Scelio sp. 1; A9-A10 in Idris sp., and a completely modified antenna in Gryon monspeliense (Picard 1924)]; a helicomery in Opisthacantha sp.; a hypertrophied interantennal prominence and central keel in Triteleia peyerimhoffi (Kieffer 1906); a schistocery concerning A5 in Apegus sp.; and a gynandromorph specimen of Scelio sp. 2.
