We studied the impact of activity space on the estrous behaviors of 11 healthy adult female and 3 adult male giant pandas with natural mating ability from the Beijing, Lanzhou, and Chengdu Zoos, and the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center during their non-mating and mating seasons from November of 1999 to May of 2003. Seasonality Of Reproduction And Embryonic Growth Of Spiny Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias L., 1758) In The Eastern Black Sea, Sefa Ayhan Demi̇rhan, Kadi̇r Seyhan

The seasonality of reproduction and embryonic development of spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) sampled from the Eastern Black Sea were studied. The gestation period of spiny dogfish, starting in August, September and October, takes around 23-24 months. Fertilized females were caught at a depth of 30-45 m in July and August. Females with full-term pups and empty uteri were found at 50-60 m depth, where the temperature was 10 °C. Lengths of pups at birth were around 28-29 cm, whereas their weights ranged from 68 to 78 g. The Basommatophoran Pulmonate Species (Mollusca: Gastropoda) Of Turkey, M. Zeki̇ Yildirim, Burçi̇n Aşkim Gümüş, Ümi̇t Kebapçi, Seval Bahadir Koca

To date, based on the studies of foreign and Turkish malacologists, 28 basommatophoran snail species belonging to 16 genera from 5 families (Physidae, Lymnaeidae, Planorbidae, Ancylidae, and Acroloxidae) have been found in freshwaters of Turkey. In Turkey, the genera Acroloxus (1 species), Galba (1), Stagnicola (1), Radix (2), Lymnaea (1), Physa (1), Physella (1), Planorbarius (1), Ferrissia (1), Planorbis (2), Anisus (4), Bathyomphalus (1), Gyraulus (8), Hippeutis (1), Ancylus (1) and Bulinus (1) are recognized. Also, 16 species (including 8 recent) and 5 subspecies are known from Quaternary fossil deposits of Turkey.

During a field excursion in eastern Turkey and the Zanjan province of Iran, 9 rodent species were captured, and the diploid number of chromosomes (2n), the number of autosomal arms (FNa) and the fundamental number (FN) were determined for these species. Microtus schidlovskii with 2n = 60 and FNa = 58 was recorded for the first time from Özalp (Van) and Yüksekova (Hakkari). The karyological record of Meriones vinogradovi in Turkey was also given for the first time. In studies carried out from January 2001 to December 2002 in Ankara-Gölbaşı district, 9 mosquito species (Anopheles sacharovi, An. maculipennis, An. claviger, Culex mimeticus, Cx. pipiens, Cx. theileri, Culiseta annulata, Cs. longiareolata and Ochlerotatus caspius) were determined. The population estimations of immature stages were performed in 15 breeding habitats such as lake edge, swamp, wet pasture, canal and pond. The species that had the most sampled immature stages was Cx. pipiens (29.30%); An. sacharovi (18.93%) and An. maculipennis (17.47%) followed it. The stomach contents of 986 pikeperch, Sander lucioperca (Linnaeus, 1758), collected from Lake Eğirdir in Turkey were investigated between March 2001 and February 2002. Thirteen taxonomic categories were identified from the 1745 prey items analysed. It was determined that the diet of pikeperch in Lake Eğirdir consisted of some fish species (Knipowitschia sp., Aphanius anatoliae anatoliae, Gambusia affinis, Nemacheilus lendli, Carassius gibelio, and Sander lucioperca), odonats (Calopteryx splendens), mysids (Mysis), amphipods (Gammarus) and dipterans (Chironomus). In this study, the spawning period, length at first sexual maturity and fecundity of the pike (Esox lucius L., 1758) population in Lake Karamık between March 2002 and February 2003 were investigated. Mean length at first reproduction (L_m) was determined as 19.7 cm for female pike. The monthly values of the gonadosomatic index indicated that spawning occurred between February and March. The relative fecundity was determined as 45.7 ± 4.9 eggs g^{-1} total body weight. This research was carried out at 35 stations in 16 different streams on the Biga Peninsula during the spring and summer of 2000 and 2001 to determine the freshwater ichthyofauna and community features. In addition, some physical and chemical parameters of the streams were determined in their natural environment. Fourteen taxa belonging to 5 families were determined. Forty-seven Darevskia armeniaca specimens collected from 2 different localities in Ardahan were examined in terms of pholidosis characters, morphometric measurements and colour-pattern features. The 2 populations were differentiated from one another in terms of the number of supraciliar plates (left-right) (SCPa-SCPb), supralabial plates (left-right) (SRLa-SRLb) and transversal series of ventral plates (TVP) according to the results of the Mann-Whitney U test. During 2001-2003, Amblyseius californicus (McGregor) was collected from the strawberry, peach, bean and pepper, where it was associated with Tetranychus urticae and Panonychus ulmi in Kuşadası, Aydın, Turkey. The descriptions and drawings of male and female A. californicus, which is a new record for the Turkish fauna, are given.

Prey Selection By African Catfish Clarias Gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) Larvae Fed Different Feeding Regimes, Erdal Yilmaz, Ahmet Bozkurt, Kaya Gökçek

Live prey selection by African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, larvae was examined under laboratory conditions. Larvae were offered plankton, plankton + trout starter (TS) and plankton + betaine supplemented trout diet (BTS) for 7 days after exogenous feeding. Five larvae were sampled to determine their gut contents and selectivity index for each treatment 15 min after the feeding. It was observed that dry diets (TS and BTS) improved the growth (P < 0.05), but did not significantly influence the prey selection of the larvae. It was determined that African catfish larvae preferred Copepods and Rotaria sp. to other zooplankton species for all feeding regimes.

Samples were collected from 7 different stations between January 2002 and December 2002 with a view to identifying the littoral benthic fauna (Oligochaeta and Chironomidae) of Lake Kovada, located in Southern Anatolia. As a result of this study, 35 species were determined, comprising 15 species from Oligochaeta (8 Naidid and 7 Tubificid), and 20 species from Chironomidae (4 Tanypodin, 2 Orthocladiin, 12 Chironomini and 2 Tanytarsin). Species richness varied between 11 and 19. The present study is based on species collected and observed in Kazdağı National Park and its surroundings. Field collections yielded 40 mammal species from 6 orders: Insectivora (4), Chiroptera (14), Lagomorpha (1), Rodentia (11), Carnivora (8), and Artiodactyla (2), Of the species recorded in this study, 6 were new records from north-west Anatolia: Sorex volnuchini, Rhinolophus hipposideros, Myotis emarginatus, Eptesicus serotinus, Hypsugo savii, and Microtus subterraneus.

With the aim of identifying the oligochaeta fauna of Topçam Dam-Lake, located on the north-western slopes of the East Menteşe Mountains (Aegean region, Turkey), a number of samples were collected monthly between June 1999 and June 2000. Having no previous faunistic studies, some physico-chemical features and oligochaeta fauna of the dam-lake were determined for the first time in this research. Consequently, 11 species were determined, 9 species from Tubificidae, and 2 species from Naididae. The age composition, growth parameters, spawning season, sex ratio, length at first sexual maturity and fecundity of por's goatfish (Upeneus pori) caught from the Bay of İskenderun in the eastern Mediterranean Sea were investigated. Females and males made up 52.6% and 47.4%, respectively, of the particular population of the species. The total length of females ranged from 7.0 cm to 17.0 cm, and of males from 6.6 cm to 15.1 cm. This study is based on 62 Sciurus anomalus specimens obtained from Konya, Karaman, Kütahya and Çorum provinces between 1997 and 2002. Some ecological and biological features of the species, including habitat, nest-sites, fur colour, baculum and phallus were investigated. In this species, the chromosome number (2n) is 40. For the taxonomical evaluation of Sciurus anomalus, morphometric data of the specimens were used. The specimens were discussed at the subspecies level, comparing to the relevant literature, and it was concluded that our specimens represent the nominate form.

The effect of parasitoid age on fecundity and sex ratio in Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was examined at 26 ± 2 ºC and 60 ± 5% relative humidity. Galleria mellonella (L.) and Ephestia kuehniella (Zell.) were used as host species. It was found that the fecundity of the female parasitoid did not change significantly during the first 5 days of the female's lifespan but afterwards it decreased significantly. Seasonal activities of wolf spiders (Lycosidae) and ground spiders (Gnaphosidae) were studied in a meadow in Van between 30.11.1993 and 27.11.1994. Nineteen species belonging to 4 genera in Lycosidae and 11 species belonging to 6 genera in Gnaphosidae were identified by using pitfall traps. Morphometric, Karyotypic And Electrophoretic Analysis Of The Genus Apodemus Kaup, 1826 (Mammalia: Rodentia) In Thrace, Reyhan Çolak, Ercüment Çolak, Nuri̇ Yi̇ği̇t

Thirty-two specimens of Apodemus in Thrace were evaluated. Ten specimens of A. flavicollis and A. sylvaticus were karyotyped. Eighteen specimens were electrophoresed to determine patterns of the esterase enzyme system. Morphometric analysis showed that A. flavicollis and A. sylvaticus were the closest species in a comparison between A. agrarius. A. flavicollis and A. sylvaticus with the same karyotypic values of 2n = 48, Nfa = 46, and NF = 48. Patterns of the esterase enzyme system clearly separated A. flavicollis, A. sylvaticus and A. agrarius.

In summer 1997 on the island of Pag in Croatia, we studied a selection of perching sites of the Turkish gecko Hemidactylus turcicus. With the transect sampling of 1 hour in 2 days we found 102 geckos. Adults as well as juveniles were founds mostly on vertical walls.

Aphidophagus coccinellid (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera) species were determined in cultivated and uncultivated fields in Kahramanmaraş. Furthermore, aphid species preyed upon by each coccinellid species were also specified. Adult coccinellids observed feeding on the aphid species were collected by suction tube while immature stages were collected with their preys and cultivated in order to obtain adults. This study yielded 33 coccinellid species feeding upon 59 aphid species. Zooplankton Of Two Drinking Water Reservoirs In Central Anatolia: Composition And Seasonal Cycle, Ni̇lsun Demi̇r

Comparative studies were performed on the zooplankton composition and some physical and chemical properties of the Kurtboğazı and Çamlıdere reservoirs. Zooplankton abundance, conductivity, organic matter, hardness and orthophosphate concentrations were lower and Secchi depth was higher in Çamlıdere than in Kurtboğazı (P < 0.01). Rotifera species such as Polyarthra dolichoptera, Keratella quadrata, Asplanchna priodonta and Ascomorpha saltans showed peaks, particularly in spring, summer and late summer. Diaphanosoma lacustris, Bosmina longirostris and Ceriodaphnia quadrangula of Cladocera species increased in late summer whereas Bosmina longirostris and Daphnia spp. were prominent in spring. The cyclopoid copepod Cyclops vicinus was dominant in Kurtboğazı and calanoid Acanthodiaptomus denticornis in Çamlıdere.

The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature officially proposed the creation of the Rum Wildlife Reserve, in the extreme south of Jordan, in 1979. We present the first review of the birds of the proposed reserve and its environs, drawing upon published and unpublished records as well as a short field survey from June, 1996. A total of 142 species have been recorded, of which at least 34 species actually breed and another 14 probably do so. On the basis of the material collected and the observations made in the summer of 2003 in Turkey –mainly in eastern Anatolia– and some samples in the collection of Atatürk University, Entomology Museum, Erzurum, Turkey (EMET), an overview is given of the observed clearwing moths (Sesiidae) in Turkey from faunistic, distributional, and agro-economical points of view. This study was conducted in Nallıhan Bird Paradise (Nallıhan, Ankara), which displays seasonal wetland characteristics. Within the scope of this study, a 12 month field study between August 2000 and July 2001 was carried out in order to determine the avifauna of Nallıhan Bird Paradise. One hundred and thirty bird species belonging to 14 orders and 41 families were recorded in the study area. It was concluded that this area was probably used by a total of 41 actual and/or possible bird species for breeding purposes.

A Representative Of The Pulchella Group Of Alona In Anatolia: Alona Cambouei Guerne & Richard, 1893 (Cladocera: Chydoridae), F. Banu Yalim, Battal Çiplak

Alona cambouei of the pulchella group in Anatolia is considered in this study. A description of the species is supplemented with new data obtained from new specimens and necessary illustrations are provided. A. cambouei is diagnosed from other Alona species of Anatolia. Some conclusions are given about the distribution of the pulchella group and it is assumed that the group is Gondwana origin and Anatolia is the north-west end of the range of the group in Asia.

A New Microsporidian Parasite Record Of Phyllotreta Undulata (Chrysomelidae, Coleoptera), Mustafa Yaman, Renate Radek

A new microsporidian parasite of Phyllotreta undulata was recorded in Turkey. Fresh spores are oval, 3.85 ± 0.69 µm (2.0-4.75) in length and 2.04 ± 0.23 µm (1.90-2.40) in width (n = 50). The spores are uninucleated. As there were insufficient data available on the complete life cycle of the parasite, it could not be identified at species level.
