This study was conducted to determine some biological characteristics of Calosoma sycophanta L. under laboratory conditions between 2001 and 2003 in Kahramanmaraş. The adult emergence period of C. sycophanta started at the end of February and extended until the first week of March (from soil). When they emerged, they fed on caterpillars of the pine processionary moth. After 1-1.5 weeks of feeding, adult beetles copulated and deposited their eggs into humid soil. The oviposition period continued for 20-25 days. The first instars hatched from eggs within 6-13 days. The first instars were 7-8 mm in length and dirty whitish–yellow, but …

Reptiles are long-lived, sedentary animals and therefore may be good biomonitors of their local habitat. Experiments were carried out to determine the effects of 2 agro-pesticides, cypermethrin and malathion, on the cholinesterase activity of Calotes versicolor Daudin. Two different concentrations, 0.1% and 1%, were used and cholinesterase activity was estimated in the liver and kidney. This decreased by up to 20% and 35% in the liver and 27% and 54% in the kidney under the effect of cypermethrin. Food Of The Banded Newt, Triturus Vittatus Ophryticus (Berthold, 1846), At Different Sites In Trabzon, Bi̇lal Kutrup, Emel Çakir, Nurhayat Yilmaz

The diet of the banded newt, Triturus vittatus ophryticus, from 3 different sites in northern Turkey was studied based on stomach contents from 180 samples (104 males + 76 females). The banded newt was found to forage on wide variety of prey organisms in the aquatic phase. Benthic invertebrates consistently made the greatest contribution to the diet, both numerically and volumetrically. Nektonic prey also appeared to be of importance in terms of volume but constituted few items. Terrestrial invertebrates contributed very little to the diet. Pigmentation Variation In The 14-Spot Ladybird Propylea Quatuordecimpunctata (Linnaeus, 1758) In The Edirne Populations, Turkey, Selçuk Yurtsever, Selda Korkmaz, Hasan Ardali

Frequency differences in the 2 different coloured forms of the 14-spot ladybird Propylea quatuordecimpunctata in the Edirne populations were investigated. The results indicated that black individuals tend to occur more frequently in the habitats than in shady habitats. The body length of the black coloured 14-spot ladybirds was significantly smaller than that of the yellow individuals. The pooled data consisted of 66 % black and 34 % yellow forms.

Field and laboratory investigations on the ecology, reproduction and behavior of Spermophilus citellus and Spermophilus xantophrymnus were performed over a period of 4 years. Both S. citellus and S. xanthophrymnus are diurnal species and occupy semiarid steppe areas in Turkish Thrace and Anatolia, respectively. Distribution of the former species is confined to restricted steppe areas in Turkish Thrace whilethe, latter lives on the Anatolian steppe, and is sympatric with Meriones tristami, Mesocricetus brandthi, Allactaga williamsi and Microtus spp. The burrows of both species have one entrance, and are built separately in the field. The specific composition of decapod crustaceans collected in the sublittoral depths (8-135 m) of Saros Bay (northeastern Aegean Sea) is presented. A total of 40 species (17 Natantia, 1 Macrura Reptantia, 8 Anomura and 14 Brachyura) were recorded. The dominant taxon is Natantia, represented by a total of 17 species and an occurrence frequency of 42%.

A total of 105 specimens of the genus Mus collected from Ankara, Bartın, Bolu, Düzce and Zonguldak in Turkey were biometrically evaluated. The isocitrate dehydrogenase enzyme system along with karyotypes of 37 specimens were analysed. The zygomatic index and the index of head plus body length/tail length were diagnostic characters for Mus domesticus and Mus macedonicus. Starch gel electrophoresis gave 2 loci (Idh-1 and Idh-2) for the isocitrate dehydrogenase enzyme system. Two newly recorded Enochrus Thomson, 1859 (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae) species for the Turkish fauna, E. (E.) melanocephalus (Olivier, 1792) and E. (L.) fuscipennis (Thomson, 1884), are described, and their distribution in Turkey and worldwide is presented. A key to Turkish Enochrus species is provided and E. (L.) segmentinotatus treated under the "bicolor species complex".

This research was carried out to determine the crustacean species associated with Padina pavonia facies distributed in the upper-infralittoral zone of the Aegean Sea coasts of Turkey and their bioecological features. The investigations were performed at depths of 2-5 m in 13 different stations chosen in the Aegean Sea in June and July, 1995. As a result of the study, a total of 3279 specimens belonging to 85 species were identified. Of these, Ampithoe ramondi was commonest with a dominance value of 21.47%, followed by Elasmopus pocillimanus with 13.94% and Ericthonius brasiliensis with 4.61%.

Knipowitschia longicaudata is recorded for the first time from Lake Manyas. K. caucasica is known to live in Lake Manyas. Therefore, In order to determine whether the specimens of Knipowitchia collected from Lake Manyas were K. caucasica species or not, they were compared with K. caucasıca from Lake Eğirdir. The comparission of K. caucasica specimens from Lake Eğirdir with the specimens from Lake Manyas showed that those species were 2 distinct species of Knipowitchia. Observations On Some Behaviours Of Krüper’S Nuthatch (Sitta Krueperi), A Little-Known West Palaearctic Bird, Tamer Albayrak, Ali̇ Erdoğan

Some intraspecific and interspecific behaviours in Krüper's Nuthatch (Sitta krueperi) populations were observed in Antalya province, southern Turkey. An account of their endemic distribution in Anatolia on the one hand, and the lack of sufficient data on the other, gave rise to the need for such a study. The breeding behaviour in the populations is observed, particularly in the BÜK (Lütfi Büyük Yıldırım research forest) and ELMALI Cedar research forests. The results are given in 2 parts as observed behaviours throughout a year and breeding period, which are mating, nesting, brooding, parental care and rearing and territorial behaviours.

Larval development of Menaethiops bicornis Alcock, 1895 was carried out under laboratory conditions during 1996 from an ovigerous female to the second zoeal stage at room temperature, 27- 29 °C, with a salinity of seawater at 35-37 ‰ and pH 7.9. The larvae are illustrated, described and also compared with the laboratory reared larvae of M. nodulosus described by Ghory and Siddiqui (2002) from Pakistan.

Sexual Dimorphism In Podarcis Sicula Campestris, Milan Vogrin

Morphometric characters (snout-vent length, tail length, head length, head width, and number of ventrals and gulars) were analysed in 58 male and 44 female Italian Wall Lizards, Podarcis sicula campestris, from the Adriatic coast of Slovenia. The Italian Wall Lizard is significantly dimorphic in most characters analysed. Males were significantly larger than females. No differences between sexes were found in the number of gulars, whereas the number of transversal rows of ventrals was significantly higher in females (27-30) than in males (24-27).

The effects of 3 hormones, HCG, LH-RH and serotonin (5-HT), on maturation and spawning of Penaeus semisulcatus de Hann, 1844 were investigated in 2 experiments in this study. The experiments were carried out in round (4 m diameter) fiberglass tanks for 50 days. This study aimed to identify 68 aphid species and subspecies in Kahramanmaraş from 1998 to 2001. It was found that these species and subspecies were from 35 genera and the subfamilies Aphidinae, Chaitophorinae, Lachninae, Myzocallidinae, Pemphiginae and Pterocommatinae (Aphididae: Aphidoidea). Sixty-eight species, belonging to the tribes Aphidini-Aphidina, Aphidini-Rhopalosiphina, Macrosiphini, Chaitophorini, Cinarini, Lachnini, Myzocallidini, Eriosomatini, Fordini, Pemphigini and Pterocommatini, were examined. Aphis acetosae L., Aphis fabae mordvilkoi Borner and Janich, Cinara cupressi (Buckton) and Nurudea meitanensis (Tsai and Tang) are reported for the first time from Turkey.

Xylophagous insects, Bostrychidae, Buprestidae, Cerambycidae, Curculionidae and Scolytidae (Coleoptera), on fig trees in Aydın province, Turkey, were investigated in 2000 and 2001. Sixteen species of Coleoptera were collected, of which 8 are new records as fig pests in Turkey: Anthaxia cichorii Olivier, Agrilus roscidus Kiesenwetter, Acmaeodera (s.str.) flavolineata Laporte and Gory (Buprestidae), Stenopterus flavicornis Küster (Cerambycidae), Xyloperthella picea Olivier, Xylonites praeustus Germar, Scobicia chevrieri Villa (Bostrychidae) and Hypothenemus eruditus Westwood (Scolytidae). Taxonomical states and the distribution of 40 Telescopus fallax specimens collected from various regions of Turkey over the past 35 years were evaluated. Information relating to a female Vipera barani and its 2 male juveniles, which were collected 35 km south of the provincial capital Adapazarı is presented. Biological information regarding the latter species is provided for the first time.

Specimens of Vipera eriwanensis and Vipera kaznakovi collected from northeastern Anatolia were examined in terms of morphological characters and compared with the relevant references. The distribution ranges of Vipera eriwanensis and Vipera kaznakovi were extended in Turkey by collecting specimens from new localities.

The samples were collected from 10 stations from September 2002 to October 2003 with the purpose of determining the Oligochaete fauna of Aksu Stream (Antalya). Seventeen species of Oligochaeta were recorded, consisting of 7 species from the family Tubificidae, and 10 species from Naididae. All of them are reported from Aksu Stream for the first time.

Two newly recorded Helophorus Fabricius, 1775 species/subspecies for the Turkish fauna, Helophorus (Atracthelophorus) shatrovskyi Angus, 1985 and H. (A.) leontis dixoni Angus, 1987, are compared against Turkish specimens (private collection). A list of subgenus Atracthelophorus species known from Turkey and their distribution in Turkey and worldwide is presented. The ecology of each examined species is discussed.

A new species of Exeurytoma Burks, 1971 (Hymenoptera, Chalcidoidea, Eurytomidae) from Eastern Anatolia is described. Morphologies and systematics of 2 Turkish species, E. anatolica Çam, 1998 from Tokat and E. kebanensis n.sp. from Keban, Elazığ, and from Ömerli, Mardin were studied. Their diagnostic characteristics were photographed using a scanning electron microscope and some of them are illustrated as seen under a stereoscopic microscope by camera lucida. An identification key for the species of Exeurytoma is provided.

We report the results of quantitative and qualitative investigations of the ostracod fauna of the benthos of Madhurantakam Lake in Tamilnadu, India. Five species of ostracod were recorded from the benthic samples, Cyclocypris sp. Cypris sp. C. lacustris, Cypriconcha sp. and Physocypris sp. The highest density of benthic ostracods was 4268 ind. M^{-2}. The top layer (5 cm) showed high ostracod abundance, which indicates the richness of this layer in terms of organic matter and nutrients. A Preliminary Survey Of Testudo Graeca Linnaeus 1758 Specimens From Central Anatolia, Turkey, Oğuz Türkozan, Kurtuluş Olgun, John Wilkinson, Leigh Gillett, John Spence

Sixteen specimens of Testudo graeca Linnaeus 1758 from 2 adjacent localities (Meke and Acıgöl) in Central Anatolia were measured. Morphological characters standardised for straight carapace length (SCL) were compared with original raw values from Testudo populations from Aegean and south-eastern Turkey. The post-ANOVA pairwise analysis (Tukey's) across all groups verified sexual dimorphism in the Central Anatolian populations in terms of anal suture length (P < 0.05) and plastron width 2 (P < 0.05). Discriminant analysis based on standardised values provided 89.3% and 92.6% correct classification among males and females, respectively. The difference was clearer between the Aegean and Central Anatolian populations, with a more domed carapace (CH) in the males and shorter plastron length (PL) and plastron width 2 (PW2) in the females of the Aegean population in comparison with the Central Anatolian population.

Tycherobius polonicus Bolland, 1986 and Neophyllobius podocarpi Bolland, 1991, originally described in Poland and the USA, respectively, are recorded for the first time in Turkey. Their morphological characters and distributions are given. In addition, a key is given to the known genera of Camerobiidae from Turkey

Chironomidae Fauna (Diptera-Insecta) Of Gümüldür Stream (İzmir), Mustafa Ruşen Ustaoğlu, Süleyman Balik, Ayşe Taşdemi̇r

Samples were collected monthly from 10 different stations between April, 1993, and March, 1994, in order to determine the Chironomidae fauna of Gümüldür Stream in İzmir, Turkey. Ten species were found in the stream as determined from qualitative analyses of the samples. Of these, 5 species belong to the subfamily Orthocladiinae and the remaining 5 belong to the subfamily Chironominae. This is the first study reporting the existence of these species in Gümüldür Stream.
