Levantine vipers, Macrovipera lebetina (Linnaeus), from Cyprus and southern Anatolia were investigated comparatively regarding morphology, hemipenes and electrophoresis patterns of venom proteins. There were discernible differences between these compared features of the 2 populations. In the light of these differences, it is concluded that the southern Anatolian population should not be identified as the nominate subspecies M. l. lebetina (Linnaeus), which lives in Cyprus. The study material from northeastern Anatolia did not allow us to make a good comparison between M. lebetina from southern and NE Anatolia.

A survey of parasitoids of the citrus leafminer, Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), was carried out in the citrus orchards in the east Mediterranean region of Turkey during 1995-2001. Their relative abundance and rate of parasitism were also determined. Ten species of parasitoids were identified: Cirrospilus sp. nr. lyncus (Walker), C. pictus (Nees), C. variegatus (Masi), C. vittatus Walker, C. ingenuus Gahan, Ratzeburgiola incompleta (Boucek), Diglyphus isaea (Walker), Semielacher petiolatus (Girault), Citrostichus phyllocnistoides (Narayanan), Neochrysocharis formosa (Westwood) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). Complete Larval Development Of Emerita Holthuisi Sankolli, 1965 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Hippidae) Reared In The Laboratory, Feroz Akhtar Siddiqui, Farhana Shafiq Ghory

Emerita holthuisi Sankolli, 1965 is the representative of the family Hippidae reported from Pakistan by Tirmizi, 1977. During 1994 and 1995 E. holthuisi was reared in the laboratory from hatching to megalopal stage. The development of E. holthuisi was followed by zoea I-VI and megalopa, this process was completed within 52 days in the laboratory at room temperature (25-27 °C) by using filtered seawater with salinity 30-32%o and pH 7.8-7.9. The carapacial scutes of 718 green turtle hatchlings, Chelonia mydas (Linnaeus, 1758), from 2 different nesting beaches in Northern Cyprus were examined. Scutes were examined with regard to variation within carapacial scute series and variation in carapacial scute pattern. The vertebral, costal and marginal series were the most variable and the supracaudal scutes were almost stable for the hatchlings. The most common scute pattern observed was 11 pairs of marginals, 4 pairs of costals, 5 vertebrals, 2 supracaudals and a single nuchal. The present information is based on the study of the first zoeal stages of Uca urvillei and Uca annulipes. The ovigerous females of Uca urvillei and Uca annulipes were collected from Sandspit on 13 July 2002. Larvae were hatched on 20 July 2002 and 24 July 2002 respectively, at room temperature 30-32 °C, in filtered seawater of a salinity of 35%o-37%o and pH 7.8. The diversity and conservation of bats in Jordan were reviewed based on field work and specimen collections. The bat fauna of Jordan consist of 24 species. Zoogeographical affinities of the bats of Jordan are reviewed. Threats to and human impact on current populations are discussed. Recommendations for implementing conservation measures and future bat research avenues in Jordan are highlighted.

The bioecology of the Orthoptera species living in the Setif region of Algeria was studied between 1995 and 1999. The research was conducted at 12 ecologically homogeneous sites with typical biotopes for the Orthoptera species in the region. Thirty-six Orthoptera species were recorded, of which 6 belonged to Tettigonioidea and 30 to Acridioidea. The most abundant and frequent species in the area were Ocneridia volxemi (Bolivar, 1878), Dociostaurus maroccanus (Thunberg, 1815), Tmethis laevisculus (Krauss, 1892), Calliptamus wattenwyllianus (Pantel, 1896), Praephyppigera pachygaster (Lucas, 1849), and Platycleis laticauda Brunner, 1882. Considering the global decline of amphibian populations, the present study aimed to investigate the sensitivity of tree frogs to a common pesticide, dimethoate. Our study reports the effects of dimethoate on 21^{st}- and 25^{th}-stage Hyla arborea larvae under standardized laboratory conditions in an acute toxicity test using the static system. Specimens used for testing were obtained from the eggs of mating pairs collected at a local natural pond. This study was conducted with the pellets of Long-eared Owls from 2 sites in the area of Dicle University Campus, located in the north-eastern part of Diyarbakır Province, Turkey (lat 37°55'N, long 40°12'E). Pellets were collected at monthly intervals from July 2000 to June 2001 and the remains of 310 prey items were recovered from 211 pellets. The assemblages were composed mostly of small mammals. In this study, age, growth, and sex ratio of 342 golden grey mullets, which were caught in fish traps during fishing season were determined. The samples were between 7.5 and 39.5 cm in length and were between < 1 and 4 years old. The length-weight relationship for this population was calculated as W = 0.01*L^{2.93}, L_{\infinity} = 43.2 cm, K = 0.33 yr^{-1}, and t_o = -0.30 yr. The male:female ratio of the population was 1:1.87 and first maturity was at the age of one year for both sexes.

Test For Acute Toxicity Of Copper, Cadmium, And Mercury In Five Marine Species, Ermelinda Prato, Francesca Biandolino, Christian Scardicchio

: The acute toxicity of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) to the marine invertebrates Gammarus aequicauda, Corophium insidiosum, Idotea baltica, Sphaeroma serratum, and Mytilus galloprovincialis were evaluated by static bioassays and calculation of the LC_{50} (lethality concentration for 50%). Hg was more toxic to Gammarus aequicauda, Corophium insidiosum, Idotea baltica, Sphaeroma serratum, and Mytilus galloprovincialis than Cu and Cd. Cu was the least toxic of the metals tested.

Currently, 4 species, Mesocricetus auratus, Mesocricetus raddei, Mesocricetus newtoni, and Mesocricetus brandti of the genus Mesocricetus are accepted as the valid taxa based on karyotype and morphologic features. A potential fifth species, Mesocricetus nigriculus, is under dispute and is currently listed as a subspecies of M. raddei, along with Mesocricetus raddei raddei and Mesocricetus raddei avaricus. UPGMA cluster analyses performed with biometrical measures confirm, only partially, the common separation of Mesocricetus hamsters into a Transcaucasian group with Mesocricetus newtoni, Mesocricetus brandti, and Mesocricetus auratus, and a Ciscaucasian group including the M. raddei subspecies. We examined 529 specimens of Mus domesticus and Mus macedonicus from Turkey, in terms of their morphological, bacular, and phallic aspects. The zygomatic index (ZI) varied from 0.32 to 0.47 in M. domesticus, and 0.60 to 0.85 in M. macedonicus. The head plus body length/tail length (H+B/T) index varied from 0.87 to 1.05 in M. domesticus, and 1.08 to 1.78 in M. macedonicus. The zygomatic plate is straight or convex in M. domesticus and M. macedonicus. The ventral wing of the parietal is generally tortuous in M. domesticus and is protruding or straight in M. macedonicus. The black rat (Rattus rattus L.) from Thrace is an Oceanian type (2n = 38). Chromosomal analyses show that a polymorphism occurs in chromosome pairs no. 9, 10, and 13 due to pericentric inversions. In the studied populations, the frequencies of homozygous and heterozygous individuals did not differ from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for chromosome pair no. 13. In both Gelibolu and Pınarhisar populations of R. rattus, a polymorphism due to the supernumerary B-chromosome was found. Errata are given for the checklist of Tabanidae fauna of Turkey published by Kılıç in 1999 and additional records and localities reported after 1999 for previously known species are added to this checklist. With these additions, the number of species and subspecies is 164 and 13, respectively, for the Tabanidae fauna of Turkey.

Twenty-two species of Tephritis were recognized, of which Tephritis mariannae Merz is a new record for the fauna of Turkey. Identification keys to the species were prepared. The locality, host plants and figures of wing pattern of each species are given. Distribution of the species in Turkey and worldwide is included.

The feeding biology of Ophisops elegans inhabiting Bursa was investigated. Stomach contents of 66 adult (28 males, 38 females) specimens collected from 3 localities were investigated by numerical analysis. Most of the foods of the Ophisops elegans specimens were insects (64.58%), the majority of which were of larval form (19.44%). Two specimens that were collected from Gürsu were maintained in a terrarium to observe their feeding behaviors. During observations, Ophisops elegans exhibited various feeding behaviors depending on the type of prey and sometimes bit and ate pieces of its prey (legs, wings, etc.).

This research was carried out along the Turkish Aegean Sea coast (from Saros Bay in the north to Turunç-Marmaris in the south) in order to determine the Isopod fauna. A total of 163 samplings were conducted at 23 stations and 17 different biotopes, from which 3209 specimens were collected belonging to 18 families, 29 genera and 50 species. Four new localities of Leptotyphlops macrorhynchus (JAN, 1862) were recorded in Turkey. Two of the localities were found within the previously known distribution area on the east side of the Fırat River, and the other 2 were found on the west side. As a result, the distribution range of Leptotyphlops macrorhynchus has been extended. Information about the morphological features of the captured specimens is given.

This paper provides information on the relation of abiotic factors (moisture content, nest depth, distance of nest from the sea and distance from vegetation) and a biotic factor (clutch size) with the hatching success of green sea turtles, Chelonia mydas, in original nests and hatcheries in Northern Cyprus. A hundred and twenty-nine randomly selected clutches (67 original and 62 hatchery) were examined. This research was conducted between June 2000 and August 2002 in 2 regions of Şanlıurfa: one (IR) where there was substantial irrigated agriculture due to the Southeastern Anatolia Project and another (MR) where a high number of malaria cases were determined every year. New records of water mites of the genus Monatractides K.Viets (Acari: Hydrachnidia, Torrenticolidae) for the fauna of Turkey are presented in this study. Three species, Monatractides lusitanicus (Lundblad, 1941), M. aberratus (Lundblad, 1941), and M. vafaei Pesic, 2004, are reported for the first time from Turkey.

The Little-Known Free-Living Ciliates From The Soils Of Pirgulian State Reserve (Eastern Azerbaijan), Ilham Alekperov, Jamilya Sadikhova

The species diversity of the soil free-living ciliates of 3 parts of Pirgulian State Reserve was investigated. In total, 120 species of free-living ciliates were found. Five of them (Enchelys vermiformis F., 1986, Epispathidium terricola F., 1986, Drepanomonas sphagni Kahl, 1931, Frontonia terricola F., 1986, and Cirrophrya terricola F., 1986) are new for the Caucasus fauna. The description of 5 species are based on the observations of living specimens and the analysis of total slides impregnated by silver nitrate.

A new subspecies, Mixobates brachypalpis ozkani subsp. nov., is described from a stream in the Rize region (Eastern Black Sea coast, Turkey). The new subspecies can be easily distinguished from the type material of M. brachypalpis, a species reported only from the locus typicus in Russia, by the more elongated and slender I-L-5/6. In addition, 3 water mite species (Torrenticola oraviensis (Láska, 1953), Torrenticola thori (Halbert, 1944) and Mideopsis roztoczensis Biesiadka and Kovalik, 1979) are reported for the first time from Turkey.

The fecundity and egg size of 3 shrimp species, Crangon crangon, Palaemon adspersus, and Palaemon elegans, were studied off Sinop Peninsula in the Black Sea. Shrimps were sampled by beam trawl with a beam length of 3 m and 10 mm codend mesh size. Mean fecundity of C. crangon females was 2297 ± 134 (range: 910-3630). Mean egg size (shortest x longest axis) at early and late embryonic development stages was 0.472 ± 0.005 mm x 0.509 ± 0.008 mm and 0.489 ± 0.003 mm x 0.627 ± 0.004 mm, respectively.
