Aspects of the population dynamics of the Egyptian sole, Solea aegyptiaca, which is a commercially important endemic and demersal flatfish species in the Egyptian Mediterranean waters, were described based on materials collected monthly between February 2004 and May 2005 from the fishing harbor at Port Said city. Age and growth studies based on sagittal otoliths revealed that this species is relatively fast growing with a maximum age of 4 years. Growth parameters and mortality rates of the Barbus tauricus escherichi population inhabiting in Yeşildere Stream were investigated. In particular, age and size distributions, asymptotic growth, and mortality rates by age group classes were estimated. A total of 304 B. t. escherichi specimens were sampled between June 2001 and July 2002. The population consisted of 5 age classes (i.e. 0 to IV) with minimum and maximum sizes of 5 cm to 23 cm in total length. Maturity And Fecundity Of Spiny Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias L., 1758) In The Eastern Black Sea, Sefa Ayhan Demi̇rhan, Kadi̇r Seyhan

The maturity and fecundity of Squalus acanthias spiny dogfish sampled from the south-eastern Black Sea were studied. Age and length at 50% maturity were 10.49 years and 87.57 cm for males, and 11.99 years and 102.97 cm for females, respectively. Mean biennial fecundity was 19.4 eggs and 12.9 pups. A linear relationship between fecundities and length was found: F_e = 0.09 x TLp + 2.12 (r = 0.5) for pups and F_o = 0.27 x TLp - 21.59 (r = 0.7) for eggs.

This study was carried out to determine the ornithofauna of Lake Karakuyu, which is located in the Inner-West Toros surroundings of the Lakes Region and in Dinar district of Afyonkarahisar province. The study area is an artificial lake and it has Wildlife Protection Area status. During the study period from August 2004 to July 2005, a total of 74 bird species belonging to 31 families were observed in the area. Under the field conditions of the Gölbaşı district of Ankara, commercial preparations of VectoBac® 12 AS (aqueous suspension) and VectoBac® G (corn cob formulation), both based on Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (H-14), were tested against Anopheles sacharovi, An. maculipennis, Culex pipiens, and Cx. theileri larvae at the edge of a lake, a flood plain, and a swamp. Applying VectoBac® 12 AS at the rate of 1.0-1.25 l/ha and VectoBac® G at 7.5-10.0 kg/ha produced excellent initial control (90%-100%) of all mosquito larvae under Central Anatolian conditions. The Morphology, Taxonomy, And Distribution Of Specimens Of Darevskia Clarkorum (Sauria: Lacertidae: Darevskia) Collected From Turkey’S Eastern Black Sea Region, Çeti̇n Ilgaz

In all, 103 specimens of Clark's lizard, Darevskia clarkorum (Darevsky and Vedmederja, 1977), from 6 localities in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey were examined in terms of pholidosis characteristics, morphometric measurements, and color and pattern features. Kolmogorov-Smirnov testing across all populations verified sexual dimorphism in the Ortacalar and Hemşin populations, regarding transversal series of ventral plates (P < 0.05). According to the Mann-Whitney U test, 16 pholidosis characteristics showed differences among the populations (P < 0.05). For comparison of morphometric measurements, 4 morphometric indices and ratios were developed. According to the results of independent t-testing, no differences were found between males and females among the populations. One-way variance analyses based on 4 morphometric indices and ratios confirmed that head index, snout-vent length/tail length, and tail length/total body length showed differences among the populations (P < 0.05). Regarding pholidosis characteristics (except rates of the presence of a masseteric plate and contact between the rostral and internasal plate), morphometric measurements, and color and pattern features, the specimens collected from 6 different localities were similar to D. clarkorum specimens mentioned in the literature. Furthermore, the known range of the species in Turkey has been extended.

Age, sex, mortality, and growth characteristics of brown trout (Salmo trutta) from the upper Aksu Stream were investigated. Females and males comprised 52.13% and 47.87% of the population, respectively. Age ranged from 1 to 8. The fork length (L) and total weight (W) were 5.7-22.8 cm and 2.9-142.6 g, respectively. Length-weight relationships were W = 0.015 x L^{2.939}, W = 0.015 x L^{2.928}, and W = 0.015 x L^{2.932} for females, males, and overall, respectively. Zooplankton Fauna And Seasonal Changes Of Gelingüllü Dam Lake (Yozgat, Turkey), Murat Kaya, Ahmet Altindağ

Seasonal variation and density of the zooplankton fauna were studied in Gelingüllü Dam Lake from July 2004 to June 2005. Samples were collected from 4 different stations on a monthly basis with a plankton net, both horizontally and vertically. The zooplankton sample consisted of 92% Rotifera, 7% Cladocera, and 1% Copepoda, including 54, 9, and 2 taxa, respectively. Rotifera were the dominant group of zooplankton with respect to species numbers, count, and density (I/m^3).

Earthworm specimens collected from 10 different areas of the Kocaeli city center were examined and identified. At the end of the study, 8 species belonging to 5 genera of Lumbricidae were identified: Lumbricus rubellus, Cernosvitovia schweigeri, Octodrilus transpadanus, Aporrectodea caliginosa trapezoides, Aporrectodea rosea, Aporrectodea jassyensis, Dendrobaena hortensis, and Dendrobaena veneta.

Zeuxia zejana Kolomiets (Diptera: Tachinidae) specimens were reared from the larvae of Agapanthia osmanlis Reiche et Saulcy (Col.: Cerambycidae) in Bayburt province (Kop Mountain Pass). Agapanthia osmanlis is the first known host for Zeuxia zejana in Turkey.

A gregarine pathogen of Ips sexdentatus is reported in Turkey for the first time and described as Gregarina typographi. A mixed nematode parasitization and gregarine infection is reported. Gregarines were observed in the populations of I. sexdentatus in Şalpazarı (Sisdağı), Trabzon. During the study, several life stages of the gregarine pathogen were observed, measured, and photographed. Measurements of gamonts and gametocysts of G. typographi are given and compared with other gregarine isolates from Turkey.

Dried ground leaves of Solanum villosum, Mill. were extracted with 5 different solvents [petroleum ether, benzene, choloform:methanol (1:1 v/v), acetone, and absolute alcohol] to determine the best extractant for subsequent isolation and characterization of larviciding compounds. Each batch of larvae (10 per batch) was treated with 30 ppm, 50 ppm, and 100 ppm of each extract in 3 replicates. All eluted fractions were found to induce significant mortality in test mosquito species. The petroleum ether eluted fraction was the least toxic, whereas the chloroform:methanol (1:1 v/v) eluted fraction was the most toxic to the larvae. A very high mortality rate …

The length, weight and sex distribution of turbot caught by bottom turbot gill nets were investigated in relation with seasons in the Sinop region. The size ranges were 23.9-69 cm and 31.8-81 cm for male and female turbot, respectively. Mean total length and weight were 50.37 ± 0.42 cm and 2483.2 ± 74.7 g for females, 45.93 ± 0.26 cm and 1711.2 ± 31.2 g for males, and 47.79 ± 0.24 cm and 2034.6 ± 38.5 g for all individuals. Monthly sampling of Gammarus pulex for 45 months in the River Yeşilırmak showed that the mean seasonal population density increased to a maximum in summer, and then declined to the lowest level in winter. There was a consistent seasonal pattern of body length distributions, characterised by the arrival of a strong cohort of new juveniles in spring and early summer. The ovigerous adults were few in autumn, peaked around January to March, and were virtually absent from July to October. Estimated sex ratios obtained from the field in general seem to show that females predominated, except in summer.

A Serological Investigation Of Pelodytes Caucasicus And Pelobates Syriacus (Amphibia, Anura) Populations In Turkey, Murat Tosunoğlu, Hüseyi̇n Arikan

Blood serum proteins of specimens belonging to Pelodytes caucasicus and Pelobates syriacus populations were compared qualitatively and quantitively by means of polyacrylamide disc electrophoresis and densitometry methods. It was determined that the blood serum proteins of both populations demonstrated qualitative and quantitive differences. This result supports the morphological and osteological studies emphasizing the fact that the genus Pelodytes needs to be treated as a separate family (Pelodytidae).

The stomach contents of 14 (4 Female Female, 4 Male Male and 6 juveniles) Eirenis modestus specimens captured during various field studies in İzmir and Manisa provinces were examined, and a total of 44 prey items were found. An analysis of the stomach contents revealed that prey belonging to the classes Insecta (75%), Chilopoda (11%), and Reptilia (2%) constituted the diet of the species; the remaining prey could not be identified. The most frequently consumed prey were the orders Coleoptera (32%) and Orthoptera (21%) by number; Coleoptera (36%), Orthoptera (36%), and Scolopendromorpha (29%) by frequency; and Scolopendromorpha (72%) by volume. …

The present paper deals with the population structure and biology of Pseudonereis anomala collected from different shallow-water habitats of İskenderun Bay in September 2005. In all, 434 specimens of P. anomala were found in the area. The maximum density and biomass values of the species in the area were 2475 ind. m^{-2} (on Jania rubens) and 7.85 g m^{-2} (among the bivalve Brachidontes pharaonis), respectively. The relationships among the biometrical measurements of the P. anomala specimens were assessed using regression and correlation analyses. The growth of P. anomala seems to be allometric. Redescription Of Diacyclops Alticola Kiefer, 1935 (Copepoda, Cyclopoida) From The Pamirs (Tajikistan), Iskandar Mirabdullayev, Nazira Rustamova

Diacyclops alticola, a poorly known cyclopoid, is redescribed on specimens from a shallow pool near Lake Rang-Kul in the Pamirs (Tajikistan) at an altitude of 3700 m. Synonymy of D. alticola Kiefer, 1935 and D. longifurcus Shen et Sung, 1963 is proposed. A key to the species of the genus Diacyclops Kiefer, 1927 in Central Asia is presented.

Skeletal muscle protein bands of Bufo viridis samples from 5 different populations in Turkey were investigated by SDS-PAGE (Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate-Poly Acrylamide Gel Electrophoresis). The total number of skeletal muscle protein bands was 23 in Hatay, Kayseri, Rize, and Tekirdağ samples, and 25 in the Mersin sample. It can be ascertained from the present study that some populations of B. viridis in Turkey could be different according to skeletal muscle protein bands and SDS-PAGE results comparing different muscle protein bands could be helpful for taxonomical investigations.

A study was conducted to estimate zinc loads in the organs and tissues of Alburnus alburnus, Cyprinus carpio and Perca fluviatilis inhabiting 2 dam lakes Kardjali and Studen Kladenets, located along the Arda river (South Bulgaria). The zinc content was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry using a Perkin Elmer 380 B apparatus .The effect of the temporal factor was proved over a 3-year study. The diploid chromosome number of Persian chub, Petroleuciscus persidis (Coad, 1981), was 2n = 50, comprising 29 metacentric, 18 submetacentric, and 3 subtelocentric chromosomes and the number of arms was 97. A detailed karyotype of this endemic cyprinid fish of southern Iran was established for the first time in this study.

This study was carried out in order to determine parasitoid species of the family Agromyzidae (Diptera) in Diyarbakır and Mardin provinces during 2002-2004. Infested leaves with leafminer larvae were collected from both cultivated and non-cultivated plants twice a month. The adult parasitoids were obtained by rearing from infested leaves in the laboratory. Five parasitoid species belonging to the Braconidae (Hymenoptera) were found. These species, Bracon kirgisorum Telenga, 1936, Opius basalis Fischer, 1958, O. monilicornis Fischer, 1962, O. quasipulvis Fischer, 1989, O. exiguus Wesmael, 1835. This study was based on Urophora Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 specimens collected from Turkey during 1999-2005. Urophora doganlari n. sp., reared in flowerhead galls on Centaurea bornmuelleria (Hausskn & Bornmuelleria, 1905), is described from Turkey and placed in the U. quadrifasciata species group. The other species are associated with Centaurea spp. and Ptilostemon spp. The best characters for defining the group are the preapical step in the female aculeus, oviscape length, colour of femora and first flagellomere, wing pattern, and pollinose on the scutum. The karyotypes and morphology of 98 specimens of the subterranean mole rat Spalax leucodon Nordmann, 1840 across 18 localities in and around Kastamonu province were analysed. It was determined that S. leucodon has 2n = 54, NF = 72; 2n = 56, NF = 74; 2n = 58, NF = 74; 2n =60, NF = 74 in the populations from the Kastamonu region. This study re-evaluated the brackish and freshwater Prosobranch fauna list of Turkey. Furthermore, recent systematic changes and future studies to be performed were discussed. Theodoxus (Theodoxus) danubialis (C. PFEIFFER 1828), Th. (Th.) subthermalis (ISSEL 1865), Bythinella opaca (FRAUENFELD 1857), Pseudamnicola macrostoma (KÜSTER 1852), P. kotschyi FRAUENFELD 1856 and P. elbursensis STARMÜHLER & EDLAUER 1957 were removed from the list, while the following taxa were added: Viviparus mamillatus (KÜSTER 1852), Bithynia pentheri STURANY 1905, Hydrobia ventrosa (MONTAGU 1803), Hydrobia (Peringia) ulvae (PENNANT 1777), Belgrandiella adsharica (LINDHOLM 1913), Sadleriana byzanthina demirsoyii YILDIRIM and MORKOYUNLU 1997, Sadleriana fluminensis (KÜSTER 1852), Tefennia tefennica SCHÜTT …

Testing The Randomness Of The Samples Of Body Size In A Replicated Design In Drosophila Melanogaster Populations From The Eastern Mediterranean, Ergi̇ Deni̇z Özsoy, Ali̇ Ni̇hat Bozcuk

Strong body size correlates, wing and thorax lengths, of Drosophila melanogaster populations from the Eastern Mediterranean were measured and tested for the presence of autocorrelation, i.e. nonrandom alternation of individual measurements within a sample. The experimental design was a laboratory setup aiming at overall homogeneity in fly culture conditions, which was achieved. A t-test, first proposed by Von Neumann, was performed for the autocorrelation analysis in each population. No significant autocorrelation was detectable, indicating very low bias in the experimental design for nonrandom picking of individuals for measurements. An interesting a-amylase has been obtained in large quantity (2400 U/g of body weight) with specific activity (20.22 U/g protein) from a freshwater zooplankton, Heliodiaptomus viduus (Gurney). Partially purified enzyme showed activity up to 70 ºC and demonstrated optimum activity at 30 ºC. The enzyme was active between pH 3.5 and 8.5, with maximum activity at pH 6.0. This study was conducted to determine the mass production of Calosoma sycophanta L. under laboratory conditions (23 °C, 60%-65% RH and a photoperiod of 8:16 (L:D) h, 85%-90% soil humidity) between 2001 and 2004 in Kahramanmaraş. The adult emergence period of C. sycophanta started on 21 February and extended until 7 March (from soil). When they emerged, they fed on caterpillars of the pine processionary moth. Pellets regurgitated by the barn owl (Tyto alba) were collected in July 2000 from Yahmool Agricultural research station, 50 km north of Aleppo. Pellet analysis yielded 657 individual prey representing 7 species of rodents, 2 shrews, 1 bird, an unidentified lizard and at least 7 species of insects. By frequency, rodents constituted 84.9% of the prey items, shrews 9.6%, birds 1.5%, insects 3.7% and lizards 0.3%. The social vole, Microtus socials, was the main food of the barn owl, constituting 59.5% of prey items. Pellets' content indicated that the barn owl consumes 1 to 5 prey per day (average 2.53 …
