This bulletin provides a method of placing realistic differences in value on young bulls offered for sale.
The prices paid for young bulls are often based on superficial appearance alone, and this has important financial implications for the purchaser. Different characteristics have either large or small effects on the net value of progeny produced. Traditionally, beef production in Australia has been based on a few of the many breeds that developed in the United Kingdom. Pedigree breeding was used to maintain these breeds and was probably a sound policy, when combined with selection on performance, to maintain and concentrate merit in stud herds.
Emphasis on pure breeding has caused many prejudices against the practices of mixing and selection which were the original bases of breed formation.

IN recent years there has been a great deal of comment on the need for "dairy blood" in the State's beef industry.
There seems to have been some confused thinking on this matter. There is no doubt at all that a beef dam should be able to produce enough milk to do its calf well.
But there is nothing to gain and a great deal to lose if too much emphasis is placed on milking qualities without reference to beef qualities.
