This study was conducted to determine the growth traits, survival rates, and some reproductive traits of Hair kids reared onfarm in Antalya province of Turkey. The data concerning the birth weights of totally 22,817 kids and the 90th day live weights of totally 21643 kids were taken for a 5-year period within the scope of this study. Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) is one of the economically most important bacterial diseases of large ruminants. In the present investigation, a total of 156 buffaloes (Murrah, Jafarabadi, and Bhadawari breeds) at a semiorganized farm after administration of HS alum precipitated killed vaccine were screened serologically for the presence of anti-HS antibodies by single dilution indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA). Out of 156 buffaloes tested for presence of anti-HS antibodies, a greater proportion of buffalo (67.94%) had protective level of anti-HS antibodies even after 90th day post vaccination.

The main objective of this study was to determine the content of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Hg) and metalloid (As) in samples of date mussels (Lithophaga lithophaga L., 1758) in order to evaluate the health risks for mussel consumers. Samples of shellfish were obtained from commercial sources and fishery in the area of Sarajevo. The content of heavy metals and arsenic is determined in a total of 46 samples. This report is the first molecular characterization of the facultative myiasis agent Eristalis tenax collected from cattle barns in Kayseri province of Central Anatolia, Turkey. A total of 10 adult fly specimens were included in the study. All flies were identified as female adults of E. tenax by morphologic characteristics under a stereomicroscope. The barcode region of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO1) gene was amplified with PCR from the genomic DNA extracts of E. tenax specimens for molecular identification and phylogenetic analyses. This study assessed the in vitro molluscicidal activity of Artemisia dubia (wormwood) leaf ethanolic extract against adult and juvenile Oncomelania hupensis quadrasi and profiled its qualitative phytochemical content. The plants and snails were collected locally. A two-year-old male domestic short hair cat was referred with a history of lower urinary tract obstruction. Four months previously, this animal showed clinical signs of hematuria. On physical examination, the cat showed signs of mild abdominal cramping and painful urination or dysuria. Abdominal radiography was also performed, and the result showed a radiopaque material-a bullet- within the bladder lumen. Cystotomy was performed to remove the bullet from the urinary bladder. In this study, ration preparation software to minimize the cost of feed for ruminant livestock such as cattle, sheep, and goats for both milk and meat yield was developed for Web- and Android-based systems using genetic algorithms. To maximize accessibility on PCs, smartphones, and tablet PCs, we used Web- and Android-based software to find cheaper feed mixes that satisfy the nutritional requirements of ruminants. The objective of this study was to assess the changes in serum glucose, beta-hydroxybutyric acid (ß-HBA), and nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) levels in Damascus dairy goats fed niacin (Nia) and methionine (Met) during late gestation and early postpartum period. A total of 75 dairy goats at 105th day of gestation were divided into 3 groups as control (no supplementation), Nia (20 g/kg Nia), and Met (2.5 g/kg Met) groups. The dietary treatments continued until parturition. Dairy goats fed dietary Nia had greater serum glucose levels on day 125 of gestation compared to the other dietary treatments (P < 0.05). On day 135 of pregnancy, serum glucose levels were higher in Met group than control group (P < 0.05). Serum ß-HBA levels decreased on days 135 and 145 in dairy goats fed Nia than those in control group. Dietary Nia and Met lowered serum ß-HBA levels on day 10 postpartum compared to control group (P < 0.05). Serum NEFA levels decreased (P < 0.05) on days 135 and 145 in dairy goats fed Nia supplemented ration than those in control group. Serum NEFA levels d 10 postpartum were different among the groups (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary Nia and Met supplementation improved serum glucose levels on day 125 of gestation while decreasing ß-HBA and NEFA levels during late gestation and early postpartum period in Damascus dairy goats under the conditions of present study.

In this study, it was aimed to evaluate which walking analysis data may be obtained for Kangal and Akbaş shepherd dogs using a pressure-sensitive walkway (PSW) and which of these data may be used in the fields of veterinary anatomy, orthopedics, and neurology. A total of 68 horses were included in the experiment and divided into groups according to recreational activity, type of horse, age, term of saliva collection, and sex. This study aims at detecting antimicrobial resistance properties including extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), AmpC, carbapenemase activities (imipenem, meropenem and ertapenem), and colistin resistance of isolated and serotyped Salmonella spp. strains from various foods (mostly chicken and chicken products) that cause food poisoning. The ISO 6579-3 (Kaufmann-White scheme) method was used for serotyping of Salmonella spp. and for detection of antimicrobial resistance with Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) as reported by EURL-AR. Bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) play a key role in the pathogenesis of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA). Limited attempts have been made to inhibit LPS absorption during SARA. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the impacts of oral usage of activated charcoal and zeolite on serum LPS and acute phase proteins (APPs) levels in lambs with SARA. Biosecurity Levels Of Livestock Enterprises In Turkey And Factors Affecting These Levels, Mehmet Feri̇t Can, Nuri̇ Altuğ, Ferhan Kaygisiz

Biosecurity (BS) is a multidimensional preventive medicine approach that has health, technical, and financial aspects. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences of the BS scores belonging to the livestock enterprises depending on the geographical region and breeding types and to predict the socioeconomic factors having an impact over the BS level. The study was conducted with 517 breeders who live in 7 different regions of Turkey. The results have revealed that the enterprises performing "beef cattle fattening and dairy cattle breeding together" have higher BS scores than the enterprises in the other breeding category (P < 0.01). The differences between the technical and financial scores according to geographical regions were statistically significant (P < 0.01). The regions categorized as "wes" have the highest score and "south" have the lowest score. It was determined that as the "educational level of the breeder" and "enterprise scale" increased, the BS score significantly went up. The regression model was found significant as a whole (P < 0.01) and the independent variables explained the variation in the technical and financial BS scores to be 14.6% and 12.7%, respectively. Dissemination of education/training practices and increasing enterprise scales will positively affect the level of BS in the sector.

This study aimed to investigate the potential cytotoxic effects and phenolic contents of aqueous (HTS) and methanolic (HTM) extracts of Holothuria tubulosa gathered from Muğla (Turkey) against different cancer cells for the first time. An MTT assay was carried out to determine cellular viability. Apoptotic cell death was determined using flow cytometry. DNA fragmentation assay and caspase-3 activity analysis were carried out. Both extracts were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for quantification of phenolic compounds. This study was carried out to determine the amount of total heat, sensible heat, latent heat, and water vapor emitted by Anatolian water buffaloes in a closed barn located in the Thrace region of Turkey. At the research farm, a group was formed by randomly selecting water buffaloes based on their genetic similarities and lactation numbers. The buffalo group formed was housed in a closedtype barn. The inside and outside air temperatures, relative humidity, and milk yield values of the buffaloes were recorded for 1 year. This study was conducted to identify the gastrointestinal helminths of wild horses in Konya, Turkey. Fresh stool samples collected from 66 horses were evaluated by flotation, sedimentation, Baermann-Wetzel, and stool culture methods. All 66 stool samples examined were found to be positive for helminths and the following parasites were detected: Trichonema spp. was detected in all stool samples (100%), followed by Poteriostomum spp. (45.5%), Strongylus vulgaris (34.9%), and Strongylus equinus (27.3%). In addition, Oesophagodontus spp. (9.1%), Strongylus edentatus (7.6%), Triodontophorus spp. (4.6%), Gyalocephalus spp. (4.6%), Oxyuris equi (3.0%), Parascaris equorum (1.5%), and Strongyloides westeri (1.5%) were detected at lower levels. …

The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of lauric arginate (LAE, 1000 ppm – 3000 ppm) as an assisting tool to reduce starved Listeria monocytogenes population in ground beef following sous-vide processing at different temperatures (55–62.5 °C). Ground beef mixed with LAE was vacuum sealed and a laboratory water bath was used for sous-vide cooking. Loglinear and Weibull models were fit to the survival microbial population and the D and Z-values were determined at 55–62.5 °C. Glucocorticoids (GCs) are metabolic hormones that promote catabolic processes, which release stored energy and support high metabolic demands such as during prolonged flights of migrating birds. Dietary antioxidants (e.g. anthocyanins) support metabolism by quenching excess reactive oxygen species produced during aerobic metabolism and also by activating specific metabolic pathways. For example, similar to GCs’ function, anthocyanins promote the release of stored energy, although the extent of complementarity between GCs and dietary antioxidants is not well known. การศึกษาความหลากหลายของจีนเคซีนทั้ง 4 ชนิดในฐานะของจีนแคนดิแดท ที่มีผลต่อลักษณะการปริมาณน้ำนมในแพะจำนวน 65 ตัวแบ่งเป็นกลุ่มแพะที่มีบันทึกการให้ผลผลิตแล้วอย่างน้อย 1 ลำดับการให้นมและมีข้อมูลของลูกแพะ จำนวน 26 ตัว และกลุ่มแพะที่ไม่มีบันทึกการให้ผลผลิต จำนวน 35 ตัว จากการตรวจสอบความหลากหลายทางพันธุกรรมของจีนทั้ง 4 ชนิดด้วยวิธี DNA sequencing พบอัลลีลของจีนอัลฟาเอส 1 เคซีนทั้งหมด 3 ชนิด ได้แก่ A, C และ E มีความถี่ของอัลลีล เท่ากับ 0.577, 0.177 และ 0.246 ตามลำดับ มีความถี่จีโนไทป์ของ AA, AC, AE, CC และ EE เท่ากับ 0.292, 0.292, 0.277, 0.031 และ 0.108 ตามลำดับ จีนเบต้าเคซีน พบอัลลีลทั้งหมด 2 ชนิด ได้แก่ A และ F มีความถี่ของอัลลีล เท่ากับ 0.538 และ 0.462 ตามลำดับ มีความถี่จีโนไทป์ของ AA, AF และ FF เท่ากับ 0.246, 0.585 และ 0.169 ตามลำดับ จีนอัลฟาเอส 2 เคซีน พบอัลลีลทั้งหมด 2 ชนิด ได้แก่ A และ B มีความถี่ของอัลลีล เท่ากับ 0.862 และ 0.138 ตามลำดับ มีความถี่จีโนไทป์ของ AA และ AB เท่ากับ 0.723 และ …

ข้อมูลสุกรพันธุ์แท้แลนด์เรซ (Landrace, LR) ลาร์จไวท์ (Large White, LW) ดูรอค (Duroc, DR) และข้อมูลสุกรลูกผสมที่มาจากฟาร์มสุกรเชิงพาณิชย์ จำนวน 158,313 บันทึก เป็นข้อมูลของแม่สุกรที่คลอดในปี 2549 ถึง 2562 ถูกนำมาวิเคราะห์อิทธิพลของปัจจัยคงที่ด้วยวิธี GLM ในโปรแกรม SAS และประมาณค่าองค์ประกอบความแปรปรวนด้วยวิธี average information restricted maximum likelihood (AI - REML) ผลการศึกษาพบว่า พันธุ์สุกรและลำดับอุ้มท้องมีอิทธิพลต่อทุกลักษณะที่ทำการศึกษาอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (P < 0.05) ฝูง - ปี - เดือนที่ผสมพันธุ์มีอิทธิพลต่อระยะเวลาอุ้มท้องของแม่สุกร (gestation length, GL) และจำนวนลูกสุกรแรกเกิดทั้งหมด (total number of piglets born, TB) อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (P < 0.05) ฝูง - ปี - เดือนที่แม่สุกรคลอดลูกมีอิทธิพลต่อจำนวนลูกสุกรเกิดมีชีวิต (number of piglets born alive, BA) จำนวนลูกสุกรตายแรกเกิด (number of stillborn piglets, SB) และน้ำหนักแรกเกิดเฉลี่ยของลูกสุกร (average birth weight, BW) อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (P < 0.05) ค่าอัตราพันธุกรรมของ GL TB BA SB และ BW มีค่าเท่ากับ 0.20 ± 0.00, 0.10 ± 0.00, 0.09 ± 0.00, 0.03 ± 0.00 และ 0.12 ± 0.01 ตามลำดับ ค่าสหสัมพันธ์ทางพันธุกรรมระหว่าง GL กับ TB และ GL กับ BA มีค่าใกล้ศูนย์ (P < 0.05) ไม่พบความสัมพันธ์ทางพันธุกรรมระหว่าง GL กับ SB และ GL กับ BW (P > 0.05) ค่าสหสัมพันธ์ทางพันธุกรรมระหว่าง TB กับ BA มีค่าเท่ากับ 0.99 ± 0.00 ค่าสหสัมพันธ์ทางพันธุกรรมระหว่าง TB กับ SB และ BA กับ SB มีค่าเท่ากับ 0.49 ± 0.05 และ 0.40 ± 0.05 ตามลำดับ และค่าสหสัมพันธ์ทางพันธุกรรมระหว่าง TB กับ BW และ BA กับ BW มีค่าเท่ากับ -0.56 ± 0.03 และ -0.59 ± 0.02 ตามลำดับ แนวโน้มทางพันธุกรรมของ GL มีค่าเพิ่มขึ้น 0.02 ± 0.01 และ 0.03 ± 0.01 วันต่อปี ในสุกรพันธุ์ LR และ LW ตามลำดับ และมีค่าลดลงเท่ากับ -0.02 ± 0.01 วันต่อปี ในสุกรพันธุ์ 50LW …

Repeatable, convergent outcomes are prima facie evidence for determinism in evolutionary processes. Among fishes, well-known examples include microevolutionary habitat transitions into the water column, where freshwater populations (e.g., sticklebacks, cichlids, and whitefishes) recurrently diverge toward slender-bodied pelagic forms and deep-bodied benthic forms. However, the consequences of such processes at deeper macroevolutionary scales in the marine environment are less clear. We applied a phylogenomics-based integrative, comparative approach to test hypotheses about the scope and strength of convergence in a marine fish clade with a worldwide distribution (snappers and fusiliers, family Lutjanidae) featuring multiple water-column transitions over the past 45 million years. …

A comprehensive understanding of the status of marine organisms in the Gulf of Mexico is critical to the conservation and improved management of marine biodiversity in the region. Threats and extinction risk, based on application of the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria at the global level, were analyzed for 1,300 Gulf of Mexico marine species. These species include all known marine mammals, sea birds, marine reptiles, cartilaginous fishes, bony shorefishes, corals, mangroves, seagrasses and complete clades of select invertebrates. Analyses showed that 6% of these species are threatened, 2% Near Threatened, 9% Data Deficient, and 83% Least Concern. However, …

Mammalian mesopredators commonly associated with human dominated landscapes often exhibit generalist diets, behavioral plasticity, and relatively high reproductive rates. Because of this wide range of adaptive traits, ecologists have been speculative of what conditions may drive species to change their activity and behavior to avoid or mitigate against resource competition, intraguild predation, and human disturbance.
