Data on the occurrence of four spongillafly species in the Balkan countries are provided. Two species are recorded for the first time in two countries: Sisyra nigra (Retzius, 1783) in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sisyra terminalis Curtis, 1854 in Serbia.

We describe here 8 instars (from A-8 through A-1) of the postembryonic development of the Cyprididae Chlamydotheca arcuata (Sars, 1901) from hatching to sexually mature individuals. To study the development of this species, cultures of adult parthenogenetic female specimens were established and maintained in the laboratory. The ostracod specimens were collected from temporary ponds and streams in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. This report provides a description of the chaetotaxy of each limb along with detailed illustrations. Photographs of eggs and carapaces were taken using scanning electron microscopy. Effects Of Aluminum, Copper, And Titanium Nanoparticles Onsome Blood Parameters In Wistar Rats, Esi̇n Gülnaz Canli, Mustafa Canli

In this study, Al2O3, CuO, and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were individually administered to 60 mature female rats via oral gavage (0, 0.5, 5, and 50 mg/kg b.w. per day) for 14 days and then responses of ATPases in the erythrocytes, total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), and liver enzyme (alkaline phosphatase, ALP; alanine transaminase, ALT; aspartate transaminase, AST) levels in the serum were determined. There were sharp decreases in Na,K-ATPase activity in the erythrocytes following NP exposures. All doses of CuO caused significant (P < 0.05) inhibitions in Na,K-ATPase activity (up to 94%), while only higher doses of Al2O3 and TiO2 inhibited (76%-80%) the activity of Na,K-ATPase. Oppositely, the activities of Ca-ATPase (up to 274%) and Mg-ATPase (up to 290%) increased significantly following TiO2 exposures. TOS levels significantly increased following Al2O3 (167%) and CuO (240%) exposures, though TAS levels did not change significantly in any of the exposure groups. The levels of ALP, AST, and ALT increased following NP administrations. Ti-NP increased the levels of all liver enzymes in the serum (up to 84%), while Al-NP (58%) and Cu- NP (43%) increased only ALP levels. The present study demonstrated evidence of the toxic effects of NPs, as they altered the measured parameters in the blood, and suggests further research to better understand the environmental fate of NPs.

The trophic structure of benthic macroinvertebrates in three different types of running water bodies subjected to varying degrees of anthropogenic pressure was analyzed. A seasonal survey was conducted at three Bulgarian rivers in 2011. An adapted version of the multihabitat sampling method was applied along with measuring physical and chemical variables. The ecological status was defined by means of biotic and trophic indexes. Distribution of the functional feeding groups shows that the most sensitive groups, shredders and scrapers, dominate the trophic structure of the mountain river types. The way in which animals use the physical and biological resources in habitats is an important aspect of their behavioral ecology. Here, we studied the activity and habitat use of the European glass lizard in two habitats in southeastern Bulgaria during the spring and summer of 2015. We registered behaviors such as basking and movement, and we recorded hiding locations. We also attempted to capture the individual mark of every observed individual, to determine its sex, age, and body temperature, immediately at capture. A new species, Conifaber manicoba n. sp., is described based on a female from the state of Pará, Brazil. It is characterized as being the smallest uloborid female and by having the thoracic region posteriorly depressed.

Four species of Hahnia are recorded from Crimea: H. helveola Simon, 1875; H. nava (Blackwall, 1841); H. ononidum Simon, 1875; and H. pusilla C.L. Koch, 1841. Two species, namely H. ononidum and H. pusilla, are recorded from Crimea for the first time. Crimea is the easternmost point of the known range for H. helveola. Illustrations, diagnoses, distribution data, habitats, and seasonal dynamics of activity are presented.

The authors report on the presence of species of the family Tarsonemidae in association with three bark beetle species (Orthotomicus erosus (Wollaston, 1857), Scolytus scolytus (Fabricius, 1775), and S. multistriatus (Marsham, 1802)) in two provinces in Central and Northern Iran. The following mite species are new for the fauna of Iran: Heterotarsonemus hajekae Smiley and Moser, 1985, H. magowskii Khaustov, 2001, and Tarsonemus crassus (Schaarschmidt, 1959). The present faunistic study of blood sucking lice (Phthiraptera: Anoplura) has resulted in the recording of the 4 species: Hoplopleura acanthopus (Burmeister, 1839); Ho. affinis (Burmeister, 1839); Polyplax serrata (Burmeister, 1839), and Haematopinus apri Goureau, 1866 newly reported for the fauna of Croatia. Thirteen species and 2 subspecies are currently known from Croatia, belonging to 6 families. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of different temperatures, i.e. 11 °C and 21 °C, in conditions of medium relative humidity on the rate of awakening of Vertigo moulinsiana after hibernation and its activity during the following 7 days. Oneway ANOVA did not show statistically significant differences in timings of awakening and activity between individuals kept at 11 °C and 21 °C during the first day of the study. Communities of centipedes (Chilopoda) were studied at three localities in eastern Bohemia (Czech Republic) near the town of Skutec using modified subterranean traps. Centipedes were trapped separately from depths of 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65, 75, 85, and 95 cm to allow evaluation of the vertical distribution in the soil. Presence of centipedes in deeper soil profiles is related to their ability to colonize the subterranean environment. Lithobius tenebrosus fennoscandius, L. lucifugus, L. macilentus, Cryptops parisi, Strigamia acuminata, and S. transsilvanica inhabited deeper soil layers preferentially. The present limnological investigation was conducted to study zooplankton diversity in municipal wastewater-contaminated ponds in light of their contributions to the ecosystem. It is revealed by the present study that the physicochemical factors of the study sites are regulated by wastewater input and anthropogenic activities. A good number of zooplankton species thrived in these ponds (22 species of zooplankton, including 14 species of Rotifera, 3 species of Copepoda, 4 species of Cladocera, and a single species of Ostracoda), which suggests that the municipal wastewater, loaded with various nutrients, has influenced the zooplankton diversity and abundance. The current work was aimed at studying the biology of Axinoscymnus apioides Kuznetsov & Ren (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) under different temperature regimes. These studies were performed at 6 constant temperature regimes (17, 20, 23, 26, 29, and 32 °C) under laboratory conditions in which A. apioides was fed with Bemisia tabaci Gennadius (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) nymphs on Hibiscus rosa-sinensis plants. We have characterized the endangered Punjab urial via its interferon alpha-A gene. DNA extraction was done from blood, followed by PCR and sequencing using a 3130xl genetic analyzer. Single nucleotide polymorphism and phylogenetic analyses were performed with BioEdit 7.0.9.0 and MEGA 6.1. The highly polymorphic nature revealed will lead to identifying molecular markers for breeding purposes.

Chaetopleura hennahi (Gray, 1828) is a chiton species characterized by its low profile, a comparatively large and wide body with reddish brown valves, and the presence of short hairs only in the rather narrow mantle. This rare species has been previously cited from Peru and Chile, with a dubious record near Ringdove Inlet in Canal Smyth, southern Chile; however, no field records have confirmed its presence in Chile. In this paper, Eupithecia opistographata Dietze, 1906 is reported as new for the fauna of Turkey, and three rare species (E. brunneata Staudinger, 1900; E. dearmata Dietze, 1904; and E. marasa Wehrli, 1932) are presented as second records on the basis of specimens collected in the mountainous areas of Siirt Province and Şirvan District, southeastern Turkey. This study was carried out on a young European Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) caught in the sea in Akçay, Balıkesir, in August 2015. The lice collected from the European Shag were put into 70% alcohol solution and were mounted to slides with Canada balsam after being made transparent in 10% potassium hydroxide. A catalogue of the terrestrial Eudrilidae and Megascolecidae is provided, with 10 genera and 18 species reported to date from South America. In addition, we provide the valid names, their synonyms, and the original citation. Eudrilidae and Megascolecidae contain members that have a global distribution, probably as a result of human dispersion. The species of eudrilid Eudrilus eugeniae is very common in other regions with a tropical climate, while the megascolecid species Amynthas gracilis is by far the most common earthworm in large cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Distribution Of Rotifers Of High Mountain Lakes In The Eastern Black Sea Range Of Turkey, Di̇dem Özdemi̇r Mi̇s, Mustafa Ruşen Ustaoğlu

Six expeditions were conducted in 2005-2007 on the rotifer fauna of 59 high mountain lakes of the Eastern Black Sea Range. All of the lakes are located at altitudes between 2530 and 3370 m except Uzungöl (1100 m). A total of 63 rotifer taxa were identified. All of the taxa that were identified are new records for their localities except Notholca squamula and Cephalodella gibba. Dissotrocha macrostyla, Hexarthra jenkinae, Lecane clara, Lecane kluchor, and Lecane latissima are new records for the Turkish inland water fauna. The small Indian mongoose acts as a biological control agent for rodents, snakes, and many insects in agroecosystems. Its reproductive physiology has been studied mostly from its introduced range. We investigated the reproductive pattern of the female small Indian mongoose on the Potohar Plateau, i.e. its native range. We found a male:female ratio of 0.67 (n = 52); only 16% of the live-trapped females were found to be pregnant. Elevated estradiol and progesterone levels were found during March to May. In this paper, we present the current knowledge on earthworm diversity and zoogeography of Yıldız (Strandja) Mountain in Bulgaria and Turkey. During the investigation in 2015 and 2016, 8 earthworm species altogether were registered. Murchieona minuscula proved to be new to the earthworm fauna of Bulgaria. In addition, there were 4 taxa recorded for the first time from Yıldız (Strandja) Mountain: Aporrectodea jassyensis, Aporrectodea rosea, Octolasion lacteum, and Proctodrilus tuberculatus. This study was conducted in Erzurum Province during the seasons of spring, summer, and autumn of 2007-2014. The genus Hoplomachus and species Hoplomachus thunbergii (Fallen, 1807) are recorded for the first time from Turkey. The important taxonomic characters are described and illustrations are provided. In addition, distributional data of the species in Turkey and the rest of the world, the host plants, the number of species, and collection locality information for each of the species investigated are given.

Chemical-based insecticides/larvicides pose a great threat to humans. The present study describes the histopathological changes in Anopheles stephensi Liston (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae after exposure to two essential oils, i.e. Eucalyptus globulus and Aloe vera. The exposure of 4th instar larvae of An. stephensi to 90 ppm of E. globulus and 550 ppm of A. vera oils resulted in various histological alterations in organs of the head regions like disintegration of the brain and other structures, disorganization in the imaginal buds of the antennae, complete disappearance of the optic lobes, and total disruption of the inner and outer retractor muscles of …
