Vector Competence Of Aedes Sierrensis And Culex Pipiens Complex (Diptera: Culicidae) For Dirofilaria Immitis (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) In Northern California, Jeffrey Allan Kurosaka

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Dirofilaria immitis Leidy (dog heartworm) is a life-threatening parasite transmitted by mosquitoes to domestic dogs. Endemic in the eastern United States, cases have become more prevalent over the last few decades. While prevalence in California is generally low, Lake and San Joaquin Counties have reported rates comparable to the East Coast at 3.73% and 0.71%(CAPC 2017), respectively. Aedes sierrensis is thought to be responsible for transmission in California, but in some cases, it exists in inadequate quantities and temporal ranges to explain parasite activity. Based on Huang et al. (2013) and Tran (2016), bloodfeeding patterns, and other vector criteria, Culex …

Ticks are the vector of many human and animal diseases; and host detection is critical to this process. Ticks have a unique sensory structure located exclusively on the 1st pairs of legs; the fore-tarsal Haller's organ, not found in any other animals, presumed to function like the insect antennae in chemosensation but morphologically very different. The mechanism of tick chemoreception is unknown. Utilizing next-generation sequencing and comparative transcriptomics between the 1st and 4th legs (the latter without the Haller's organ), we characterized 1st leg specific and putative Haller's organ specific transcripts from adult American dog ticks, Dermacentor variabilis. The …

The ocean is a dynamic environment inhabited by a diverse array of highly migratory species, many of which are under direct exploitation in targeted fisheries. The timescales of variability in the marine realm coupled with the extreme mobility of ocean-wandering species such as tuna and billfish complicates fisheries management. Developing ecoinformatics solutions that allow for near real-time prediction of the distributions of highly mobile marine species is an important step towards the maturation of dynamic ocean management and ecological forecasting. Using 25 years (1990-2014) of NOAA fisheries' observer data from the California drift gillnet fishery, we model relative probability of …

Reproductive Competency And Mitochondrial Variation In Aged Syrian Hamster Oocytes, Fang Li, Frank J. Castora, Wentia Ford, Khalid Alarid, Howard W. Jones Jr., R. James Swanson

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The hamster is a useful model of human reproductive biology because its oocytes are similar to those in humans in terms of size and structural stability. In the present study we evaluated fecundity rate, ovarian follicular numbers, ova production, mitochondrial number, structure and function, and cytoplasmic lamellae (CL) in young (2–4 months) and old (12–18 months) Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). Young hamsters had higher fertilisation rates and larger litters than old hamsters (100 vs 50% and 9.3 +/- 0.6 vs 5.5 +/- 0.6, respectively). Ovarian tissue from superovulated animals showed a 46% decrease in preantral follicles in old …

Effects And Mechanisms Of Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus (Prrsv) Type 1 And Type 2 On The Permeability And Viability Of Porcine Endometrial Epithelial Cells, Dran Rukarcheep

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Both PRRSV types 1 and 2 revealed the sign of reproductive disorders associated with a lesion at implantation sites. Impairment of maternal glandular endometrium cell integrity and function by PRRSV infection may impact a proper nourishing fetus. This research was aimed to examine the effects of PRRSV type 1 and type 2 directly on the viability and barrier function of the endometrium using porcine glandular endometrial epithelial cell culture (PEG). The comparison of the route and the strain of PRRSV infection coinciding with their virulent in reproductive epithelia were considered. PEG cells isolated from the 4-6 months old PRRSV-free-herd gilts …

Potentials Of Ivabradine To Improve Cardiac Function In Dogs With Naturally Occurring, Asymptomatic Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease, Prapawadee Pirintr Jan 2017

Potentials Of Ivabradine To Improve Cardiac Function In Dogs With Naturally Occurring, Asymptomatic Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease, Prapawadee Pirintr

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The main hypothesis of the present study is that ivabradine (1.0 mg/kg, orally, twice daily) can reduce heart rate (HR), myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) and improve cardiac function in dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) partly due to a reduction of cardiomyocyte apoptosis. In order to test the hypothesis, this study was divided into three parts. The first part aimed to determine the appropriate single oral dose of ivabradine for reduction of HR and MVO2 as assessed by rate-pressure product (RPP= HR x systolic blood pressure). Once the appropriate dose was achieved, the second part was conducted to investigate …

Effects Of Short-Term Growth Hormone Administration On Plasma Leptin Levels In Normal And Diet-Induced Obesity Rats, Sutharinee Likitnukul

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Obesity has related to the alteration of hormonal profiles, i.e. growth hormone (GH), insulin and leptin. Because of the pleiotropic mechanisms of GH, it plays important roles both in the pathophysiological mechanisms and the therapeutic hormonal supplementation, which probably affected plasma leptin. The present research aimed firstly to demonstrate the effect of short-term GH administration on plasma leptin in 3 conditions; basal, meal-induced and fasting condition, from the rats with different adipose tissue mass. Secondly, to investigate short-term effect of GH on insulin sensitivity and body adiposity in control, diet resistant (DR) and diet-induced obesity (DIO) rats. In this regard, …

The Protective Effect Of Hydroxyxanthone On The Leakiness Of Intestinal Epithelia By The Proinflammatory Cytokine Related To Bacterial Endotoxin, Wannaporn Chayalak

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Leaky gut characterized as decreased transepithelial electrical resistance and increased paracellular permeability to macromolecules is associated with several fatal diseases including sepsis. Pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β is a critical mediator of underlying mechanism through activation of myosin light chain kinase pathway. Blocking the inducible phosphorylated myosin light chain (p-MLC) indicates the successful treatment. Xanthones predominantly found in mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) has been indicated as a potent anti-inflammatory action. Hydroxyxanthones (HDX), the major natural xanthones, have been recently synthesized in various forms. This study aimed to examine and screen the action of various forms of synthetic HDXs, in preventing the increased paracellular …

Nutritional Effects On Morphological Characteristics And Male-Male Competition Of Stag Beetle Aegus Chelifer Chelifer Macleay, 1819, Nut Songvorawit

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Stag beetles have great intraspecific variation in their bodies and weapon sizes, which are strongly influenced by the environment during the larval stage. However, the impacts of environmental factors affect on such variation and the links between environmental factors, morphological characteristics and behaviours are still unclear. This study first surveyed stag beetles discovered in natural habitat of a dry-evergreen forest in Chanthaburi province, Thailand, to roughly examine possible factors relating to growth of stag beetles. The occurrence and numbers of stag beetle larvae found in logs were high in those of a moderate decay class with relatively high nitrogen content …

Survey Gear Comparisons And Shark Nursery Habitat Use In Southeast Georgia Estuaries, Jeffrey Cohen Carpenter Jan 2017

Survey Gear Comparisons And Shark Nursery Habitat Use In Southeast Georgia Estuaries, Jeffrey Cohen Carpenter

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gill nets and longlines were compared as shark nursery sampling methodologies in inshore waters of Georgia to (1) assess differences in gear selectivity, bias, and stress of capture and (2) determine potential relationships between habitat features and shark distribution and abundance. Gear selectivity varied between gears as a function of both species and life stage resulting in significantly different estimates of species and life stage compositions. Juvenile bonnetheads (Sphyrna tiburo) and young of the year blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) experienced significantly higher stress from gill net capture than longline. Major sources of bias are thought to …

Behavioral And Physiological Assessment Of Zoo-Housed Heterosexual Gorilla (Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla) Troops With Multiple Silverbacks, Kaylin S. Tennant Jan 2017

Behavioral And Physiological Assessment Of Zoo-Housed Heterosexual Gorilla (Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla) Troops With Multiple Silverbacks, Kaylin S. Tennant

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Based on recognized life history traits and ecology, zoos strive to house their gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in mixed-sex groups with one mature male or silverback, multiple females, and their offspring. However, successful captive breeding programs and a nearly 50:50 birth sex ratio has created the need to house surplus males in solitary conditions or all-male groups. It is commonly believed that male western gorillas will not tolerate one another in the presence of females; however, multi-male, mixed-sex groups have been observed in the wild. For this reason, some zoos have begun experimenting with this scenario. At the …
