The cost of compound feed is a constraint in intensive fish and poultry farming, contributing 60-80% of the total production costs, 70% of which is due to fish and soy meal used as protein source. This review presents the extent to which insects have been utilised as an alternative protein source in feed in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). A key word search of agricultural, biological and multi-disciplinary databases and academic search engines was conducted for literature on the extent of research and utilisation of insects in poultry and fish feed in SSA. The study was conducted to investigate comparatively some behavior traits (grazing, resting, bipedal stance, agonistic behavior, rumination, and browsing) of Honamlı, Hair, and Saanen goat breeds in the morning and afternoon periods between April and September in maquis shrublands. A total of 30 two-year-old goats including 10 from each goat breed were used. While grazing behavior of Saanen goats was observed mostly in April and May as 75.45%-71.65% and 73.16%-78.25% for morning and afternoon in these months, respectively, these values were respectively 62.52%-64.23% and 59.94%-67.67% for Hair goats and 60.12%-62.94% and 46.42%-54.78% for Honamlı goats. The aim of this study was to compare and contrast the isolation ability of selective media developed for Brucella spp. isolation and their inhibition ability against contaminant microorganisms. Fifty-one field strains biotyped from abortion case samples and 25 Brucella spp. negative organ samples were used. Strain suspensions and organ suspensions were prepared separately. The turbidity of the strain suspensions was measured via spectrophotometer. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate three production systems using commercial concentrate supplementation on Italian ryegrass pasture (Lolium multiflorum) on the metabolic profile and body condition score (BCS) of ewes, from those recently postpartum to 75 days in lactation. Ferritin, heavy polypeptide 1 (FTH1) is a kind of ferritin complex that catalyzes the conversion of Fe(II) into Fe(III) to protect the cell from oxidative damage. Recent research has shown that FTH1 is also associated with several disease-related processes, such as inflammation and tumor progression and so on. In this study, the coding sequence (CDS) of FTH1 in Jinding ducks was cloned. The CDS sequence revealed an open reading frame of 546 nucleotides encoding a protein with 181 amino acids. A trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of different processing methods of pigeon pea (Pp; Cajanus cajan) on fattening performance and carcass traits as well as blood biochemical and hematological parameters of broiler chickens. For this purpose, 300 day-old chicks were assigned to 5 treatments. Each treatment had 5 replicates and contained 12 birds each under a completely randomized design. Tick-borne diseases are one of the most important classes of disease in animal husbandry and cause severe economic losses. In this study, 660 adult female ticks were collected from sheep in nine localities in Henan Province, China. All were identified as Haemaphysalis longicornis, confirmed with light microscopy and PCR amplification. The pathogens identified in these ticks included bacteria of the genus Anaplasma (Anaplasma ovis, A. bovis, A. phagocytophilum) and piroplasmal protozoans (Theileria luwenshuni, Babesia motasi). The aims of this study were to investigate the presence of Escherichia coli O157 and to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of isolates in different poultry-originated materials. In total 300 samples of chicken carcass swabs (n = 50), chicken feces (n = 50), gizzard (n = 50), liver (n = 50), water in the final scald tank (n = 50), and equipment such as tables, conveyers, and knives (n = 50) were used as materials. The present study was undertaken to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of pulmonary surfactant proteins (SP-A, SP-B, proSP-C) associated with proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), thyroid transcription factor-I (TTF-I), and lymphocytic phenotypes (CD3+ T and CD79αcy+ B cells) in ovine lungs with exudative and verminous pneumonia. Pneumonic lungs (n = 50) were classified as presenting fibrinous bronchopneumonia (n = 16), abscessing necrotic bronchopneumonia (n = 10), verminous pneumonia (n = 15), and interstitial pneumonia (n = 9). Ticks are the main hematophagous arthropods and obligatory ectoparasites that are considered a vector of serious pathogens for animals and humans. The aims of the present survey were to assess the prevalence and diversity of ticks in cattle in Southeast Iran and to determine Coxiella burnetii in the ticks. From May 2014 to April 2015, 583 ticks were collected randomly from 257 cattle. Nested trans-PCR was performed to detect C. burnetii. The overall prevalence of hard tick infestation on cattle was 56.8%. Seaweeds contains different types of polysaccharides with high abilities. The aim of this study was to determine the potential of fucoidan polysaccharides for wound-healing properties. Fucoidans of two species of Padina (P. tetrastromatica and P. boergesenii), collected from the Persian Gulf northern coastal area, were extracted and analyzed using high-performance anion-exchange chromatography. Purified fucoidans were used to prepare a 2% topical ointment. In this study, it was aimed to determine the influence of applying Nigella sativa (NS) and Hypericum perforatum (HP) on wound healing. A total of 42 female albino 2-month-old Wistar rats were randomly separated into 3 main groups. Each of these main groups was separated into two subgroups for 7- and 14-day postoperative follow-ups. In this experimental study, effects of bovine amniotic fluid and hyaluronic acid were compared on an osteoarthritic model induced in rabbit stifle joints. The study was performed on 21 rabbits undergoing anterior cruciate ligament transaction for establishing osteoarthritis. The effect of ketamine, a drug commonly used as an anesthetic, on monoaminergic neurotransmitters and GABA in neurocytes from fetal rats has not yet been elucidated. We thus decided to investigate these effects by first evaluating ketamine levels in the cerebrospinal fluid by high-performance liquid chromatography. We thus determined the concentrations of GABA, DA, NE, 5-HT, and 5-HIAA following the addition of four different concentrations of ketamine at day 7 of nerve cell culture. Being multipotent progenitor cells, mesenchymal stem cells continue to attract attention as a promising tool for cell-based therapy and tissue engineering. However, research on the ultrastructure of these cells is rather scarce. This study was aimed at the investigation of the transmission electron microscopic ultrastructure and morphology of mesenchymal stem cells isolated from the stroma of rat umbilical cord using the explant culture method. At the end of the third passage, some of the cells isolated from the stroma of the umbilical cord were harvested for electron microscopic examination. A study was conducted to compare the clinical presentation and pathology of some organs associated with experimental infection of Nigeria field isolates of Trypanosoma vivax and Trypanosoma congolense in the Yankasa breed of sheep. This study investigated how environmental structuring in the growing units of goat kids influences their ability to cope with social isolation and weaning-induced stress. Two experimental groups were arranged in an enriched (E) or barren (B) environment and each of the two groups had 10 female and 10 male kids. During the social isolation, the goat kids in group E started bleating earlier (P = 0.1612) and more frequently (P = 0.0125). n order to reduce estrus synchronization cost, utilization of residual progesterone (P4) in the used controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device upon sanitization can be possible. Two datasets were compiled from 8 and 7 research articles involving 3434 (2653 heifers + 771 lactating cows + 10 ovariectomized cows) and 7301 cattle (3879 heifers + 3422 lactating cows) to evaluate blood P4 concentration and conception rate, respectively, in response to repeatedly used CIDR devices after sanitization via autoclaving and disinfection. As the number of CIDR usages increased, blood P4 concentration decreased linearly (y = -0.484X + 3.135, R2 = 0.99, P < 0.001). Blood P4 concentration (1.52 vs. 2.20 ng/mL; P < 0.002) and conception rate (40.76 vs. 32.96%, P < 0.05) for lactating cows were lower than those for heifers. The sanitization method did not affect blood P4 concentration, but reused CIDR device subjected to disinfection was associated with reduced conception rate. In summary, depending upon the initial P4 load (1.38-1.90 g), the CIDR device could be used twice in lactating cows and four times in heifers after autoclaving to achieve target blood P4 concentrations.

The target article by Birch illustrates the practical difficulties with the “Animal Sentience Precautionary Principle” (ASPP) while presenting potential solutions. However, the ASPP will be difficult to use without guidelines detailing how evidence of sentience should be assessed. Moreover, extrapolating conclusions found for a single species to all species within an Order is problematic. Finally, I recommend that Birch demonstrate his ASPP framework using a controversial test case to help show how it could be used in real-world situations.

My target article suggested that cognitive dissonance may be accounted for by a simpler mechanism: contrast. Whether contrast can explain all cognitive dissonance effects is an empirical question, but it is always useful to try to distinguish simpler mechanisms from more complex cognitive ones. The insistence that cognitive dissonance is a human-only process quite different from contrast may be a self-serving means of justifying the exploitation of animals.

The taxonomic status and phylogenetic position of the recently recorded smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) population from the island of Bozcaada (Çanakkale, Turkey) is clarified on the basis of morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses. The L. vulgaris population from Bozcaada presents body proportions and morphological features of subsp. schmidtlerorum, such as small body length, absence of the tail filament, and dorsal crest with pointed free margin. Similarly, phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequences (ND4, 16S rRNA) place the Bozcaada population within Clade E of the recent L. vulgaris phylogeny, which consists of L. v. schmidtlerorum populations.

Cooccurrence of Schistosoma haematobium, other trematodes, Chaetogaster limnaei limnaei, and Daubaylia potomaca was investigated in Bulinus globosus collected at Nike Lake from October 2011 to September 2012. The snail sizes as well as the numbers of these organisms were recorded. Single infections of S. haematobium, other trematodes, C. limnaei limnaei, and D. potomaca were 0.3%, 46.38%, 1.03%, and 2.66%. Coinfection of S. haematobium-C. limnaei limnaei was 0.3% while that of S. haematobium-other trematodes was 0.15%. Coinfections of C. limnaei limnaei-other trematodes and D. potomaca-other trematodes were 2.16% each. There was no cooccurrence of C. limnaei limnaei-D. potomaca or S. haematobium-D. …

Demicryptochironomus (Demicryptochironomus) vulneratus (Zetterstedt, 1838) was collected as a total of 4 individuals from the Garzan Brook, Batman Brook (Beşeri), and Tigris River (Hasankeyf) and recorded as a new chironomid larva species for the Turkish potamofauna. The species was identified morphologically under light microscope and photographed with a photomicroscope. In addition, the taxonomic features of the species were illustrated schematically with a scale.
