The ubiquitin ribosome fusion gene RpS27a's coding sequence was cloned from diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). An open reading frame of 468 bp was found to encode a putative 155 amino acid precursor protein, which shares over 90% similarity with other insects' RpS27a protein. Real-time quantitative PCR was carried out to determine the relative expression level in the fourth instar larvae of deltamethrin-resistant and deltamethrin-susceptible strains. The results showed that the expression of RpS27a was significantly higher in the deltamethrin-resistant strain than in the deltamethrin-susceptible strain. This study was conducted in the Bayburt, Erzincan, and Erzurum provinces of Turkey during 2009 and 2010. A total of 10 species in 6 genera from the subfamilies Miltogramminae (4 species in 2 genera) and Paramacronychiinae (6 species in 4 genera) were determined. The genera Angiometopa Brauer and Bergenstamm, 1889 and Brachicoma Rondani, 1856 and the species Angiometopa falleni Pape, 1986, Brachicoma devia (Fallén, 1820), Macronychia polyodon (Meigen, 1824), and M. striginervis (Zetterstedt, 1838) are recorded for the first time from Turkey. Photographs or illustrations of the new records are provided.

The ichthyofaunal diversity of the Karala River and its adjoining areas in the Jalpaiguri District of West Bengal was studied from February 2009 to September 2010. A total of 3 identified species of freshwater spiny eels belonging to the order Synbranchiformes were recorded from a total of 55 captured species. During the course of the study period, the researchers collected 3 specimens that showed nearly all of the important features of Macrognathus pancalus except for the caudal fin character. One female specimen of Serranus hepatus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Perciformes, Serranidae) was captured off the Black Sea coast of Turkey by bottom trawl at a depth of 80-90 m on 23 March 2012. This is the first record of this species for the Black Sea.

The collected materials from new localities were identified, and faunistic records of 63 species belonging to 3 genera of Opiinae were given. Ten of these species are reported as new to Turkey. We studied, for the first time, the age structure of Eremias strauchi strauchi (Kessler, 1878) from a sample (18 adults) of a population living in the vicinity of Iğdır (eastern Turkey) using the skeletochronological method. The maximum observed longevity was 7 years for males and 5 years for females. The age of males ranged from 4 to 7 years (mean 4.91, n = 12), while that of females ranged from 4 to 5 years (mean 4.66, n = 6). Some aspects of the reproductive biology of Sepia orbignyana, such as fecundity, spawning strategies, and gonad histology, have been studied in 1048 specimens (538 males and 510 females) caught during trawl surveys from May 2008 to April 2009 in the Aegean Sea. The length at 50% maturity was estimated as 50 mm for males and 70 mm for females. The smallest mature female had a mantle length (ML) of 36 mm; the smallest mature male had a 32-mm ML. This study is based on Empis and Rhamphomyia (Diptera: Empididae) specimens collected from the Marmara Region between the years 2008 and 2010. Out of a total of 28 species that were found in this study, 14 species are new records for the Turkish fauna. Distributions of these species in Turkey have been mapped, and the Palaearctic distributions were given. Geographic distributions of all species are further discussed.

A new species of Barrussus, Barrussus telescopus sp. nov., is described from the Bolkar Mountains in southern Turkey. Males have an extremely elongated and bar-shaped ocular tubercule extended anteriorly between their eyes, which is the longest projecting ocular tubercule among all known males of Barrussus. The ocular tubercule of females has a short conical projection. Cheliceral movable fingers of type specimens have 5 anteriorly situated small teeth. Fatty acid profiles of total, neutral, and polar lipids in the liver, muscle, and intestine of female individuals of Vimba vimba (L., 1758) were determined by gas chromatography. C16:0, C16:1 n-7, C18:1 n-7, and C18:1 n-9 were the most abundant fatty acids in total and neutral lipids in all tissues investigated. In addition to these acids, C20:4 n-6 (arachidonic acid) and C22:6 n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid) were the other fatty acids having high percentages in the polar lipid fraction of the tissues. Little is known about the merogony of coccidians from fishes in Africa. To our knowledge, including both freshwater and marine fishes, developmental stages have been recorded for only Goussia cichlidarum, Cryptosporidium sp. parasitizing the stomachs of juvenile cichlid fish, and Eimeria (s. l.) vanasi. A survey of coccidians parasitizing marine fishes from the coast of Senegal (West Africa) was done between 1988 and 1992 and samples of infected organs were collected for further transmission electron microscopy observations. Tree cavities are a globally important structural element of forest ecosystems that host numerous cavity-dwelling vertebrates, but they have received little research in Pakistan. We investigated cavity-bearing trees, the attributes of their cavities, and their associated vertebrate fauna in a coniferous forest of Pakistan. We recorded 1140 trees in a 2-km^2 sampled area. We found 211 cavities (64% decay-formed and 36% excavated cavities) in 83 trees (41% live and 59% snags). Of the cavities found, 74% were recorded in trunks and 26% were in branches. The morphology of the postembryonic stages of a new quill mite species, Chenophila platyrhynchos sp. nov., parasitising the Mallard Anas platyrhynchos (Linnaeus) (Aves: Anseriformes) in Poland is described in detail. This species is morphologically very similar to Ch. kanduli Bochkov known from Anas querquedula Linnaeus in Russia and differs from it by the ornament of a propodonotal shield, the number of chambers in the lateral branch of the peritremes, and the lengths of the propodonotal setae.

Fluctuating asymmetry has been proposed as a useful noninvasive tool for detecting the influence of the environment on body development. In the present study, we used digital images to estimate the fluctuating asymmetry of the plastron in an isolated Testudo graeca population in Dobrogea, Romania. We extracted data from the photos regarding the area, height, and width of 3 plastron scutes. A total of 155 adult tortoises analysed showed reduced variation in plastron asymmetry and no significant relationship was detected between fluctuating asymmetry and sex or body size. In Uzbekistan, 53 species in 4 families of nematodes of the suborder Filariata Skrjabin, 1915 (Aproctidae [9], Splendidofilariidae [12], Diplotriaenidae [20], Oswaldofilariidae [12]) were found to infect 14 orders of birds. Passeriformes harbored 23, the greatest number of species. The rate of infection was significantly lower in birds confined to aquatic environments.

In this study, Spanish Sparrows were recorded in numerous locations and specimens were collected from Samsun, Çorum, and Denizli provinces in Turkey. The breeding subpopulations preferred various nesting sites, including wooded areas and White Stork nests. These sparrows were primarily observed in flocks of variable size and were rarely solitary. The largest flock recorded was found in juniper and pine woods in Denizli. We collected data on 23 allozyme loci to compare the genetic variation among the 3 Spanish Sparrow subpopulations. Two new species of the genus Lepidostoma Rambur, 1842 from the Indian Himalayas are described and illustrated, namely Lepidostoma curvatum sp. nov. from Tato (Arunachal Pradesh) and Lepidostoma mechukaense sp. nov. from Mechuka (Arunachal Pradesh). Lepidostoma liber Malicky, 2007 from Loomla (Arunachal Pradesh) and Lepidostoma simplex Kimmins, 1964 from Pithoragarh (Uttarakhand) are first reported from India. With this addition of these 4 species, the genus Lepidostoma is now represented by 45 species from India.

Twenty-four worms were collected from the bronchioles in both lungs of a male nine-banded armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus Linnaeus, 1758 captured in Teacalco, Morelos, Mexico. The worms, herein named Metathelazia mexicana n. sp., show a constriction in the esophagus at the level of the nerve ring; males of the species have 7 pairs of papillae, fewer than the other species in the genus. Metathelazia capsulata is the most similar species to Metathelazia mexicana; however, the latter has much shorter spicules. This is the fourth species in the genus known to occur in the New World.

Brucellosis is the one of most common livestock zoonoses in Georgia, resulting in significant economic losses. Livestock were sampled in three regions of Georgia (Kakheti, Kvemo Kartli, Imereti). Districts that historically reported high numbers of brucellosis related morbidity were selected for serological, bacteriological and molecular surveys. Surveying efforts yielded samples from 10,819 large and small ruminants. In total, 735 serological tests were positive on Rose Bengal and 33 bacterial isolates were recovered and identified as Brucella melitensis or Brucella abortus by microbiology and AMOS-PCR. Parrots rely heavily on vocal signals to maintain their social and mobile lifestyles. We studied vocal ontogeny in nests of wild green-rumped parrotlets (Forpus passerinus) in Venezuela. We identified three successive phases of vocal signaling that corresponded closely to three independently derived phases of physiological development. For each ontogenetic phase, we characterized the relative importance of anatomical constraints, motor skills necessary for responding to specific contexts of the immediate environment, and the learning of signals that are necessary for adult forms of communication. Two species of the crustacean amphipod genus Niphargus inhabit the sulfidic groundwaters of the Frasassi caves in central Italy, and both harbor filamentous, sulfide-oxidizing Thiothrix ectosymbionts. As sulfide is toxic to most aerobic organisms, it appeared possible that the ectosymbionts could help their Niphargus hosts with detoxification processes. In this study, mortality due to sulfide was compared between Niphargus individuals with ectosymbionts and individuals whose ectosymbionts had been killed by antibiotic treatment. Both Frasassi-dwelling Niphargus species revealed exceptionally high tolerances to sulfide compared to other amphipod species studied so far. The ability of homing pigeons to return to their loft from unknown places has fascinated scientists for centuries. It is well established that homing pigeons, like migratory birds, posses an innate magnetic inclination compass to determine direction by measuring the angle between the magnetic field vector and the Earth's surface. Recent work has indicated that the avian magnetic compass is light mediated and appears to mediate magnetic information to the brain.
