The ability of homing pigeons to return to their loft from unknown places has fascinated scientists for centuries. It is well established that homing pigeons, like migratory birds, posses an innate magnetic inclination compass to determine direction by measuring the angle between the magnetic field vector and the Earth's surface. Recent work has indicated that the avian magnetic compass is light mediated and appears to mediate magnetic information to the brain. This occurs via a visual pathway with processing in the visual Wulst area of the forebrain. There is, however, also evidence from other avian species that magnetic direction may …

Wildlife enterprises are increasingly important to ranch income in the western United States. Habitat management practices that facilitate wildlife are needed for optimal management of multiple-use ranches, particularly for economically important species, such as mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), that are declining throughout much of their range. This study provides hitherto unavailable methodology for reliably and precisely estimating deer density within forested landscapes, enabling quantitative rather than qualitative deer management. Reliability and precision of the deer pellet-group technique were evaluated in 1 small and 2 large forested landscapes. Density estimates, adjusted to reflect deer harvest and overwinter mortality, were compared with a drive count on the small landscape and with aerial counts using forward-looking infrared videography (FLIR) on the large landscapes. Human–felid conflicts threaten long-term conservation of jaguars (Panthera onca) and pumas (Puma concolor). We interviewed ranchers from 50 ranches and inspected farms in northern Costa Rica that reported recent attacks on livestock by these 2 felids. We analyzed ranch characteristics, livestock management practices, details of predation, estimated market-value of economic losses, and ranchers’ perception of damage. Ranchers reported 81 felid attacks on livestock, including 60 head of cattle, 16 horses, 3 sheep, 1 pig, and 1 goat. Supplementing diets of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) with pelleted rations is an increasingly common practice aimed at increasing deer antler size on rangelands in Texas. Feed loss to consumption by various nontarget species (e.g., raccoons [Procyon lotor] and feral pigs [Sus scrofa]) raises both ecological and economic concerns. Whole cottonseed is a feedstuff that may afford a more targeted supplemental feeding effort. Deer-Activated Bioacoustic Frightening Device Deters White-Tailed Deer, Aaron M. Hildreth, Scott E. Hygnstrom, Kurt C. Vercauteren

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) damage urban and suburban plantings, as well as crops and stored feed. We tested the efficacy of a frightening device that played pre-recorded distress calls of adult female white-tailed deer when activated by an infrared motion sensor for a period of 13 days. This deer-activated bioacoustic frightening device reduced deer entry into protected sites by 99% (δ = -558, P = 0.09) and bait consumption by 100% (δ = -75, P = 0.06). The frightening device that we evaluated demonstrated potential for reducing damage in disturbed environments and agricultural settings.

Estimates of beaver (Castor canadensis) density play an important role in wildlife managers’ decisions about beaver population management, because managers anticipate higher incidence of problem complaints when a beaver population increases. To manage the impacts of beavers in an urbanizing landscape, managers need better information on changes in stakeholder beliefs and attitudes as beaver and human densities reach high levels. We conducted additional analysis of data collected in 2002 through mail surveys of residents in New York and Massachusetts to test hypothesized relationships between beaver density and damage experience, attitudes toward beavers, and norms about beaver management actions. …

A seroepidemiological survey of canine brucellosis was carried out in Beijing, China. Serum samples were taken from dogs admitted to the Beijing Companion Animal Hospital for immigration and emigration inspection, including dogs from 4 breeding farms and stray dogs (n = 1200, 14 districts), between January 2008 and April 2009. All of the sera were first tested and preselected by Rose Bengal plate agglutination test (RBAT), and the positive samples by RBAT were determined by tube agglutination test (TAT) again. Thrombelastography (TEG, Haemoscope Corp., Niles, IL, USA) allows for a global evaluation of the hemostatic system; while conventional coagulation tests typically evaluate only one part of the coagulation system, TEG simultaneously examines the interaction between platelets, clotting factors, the fibrinolytic system, and clot retraction mechanisms. In the present work, the biocompatibility of orthodontic devices was tested by the propagation of human osteoblasts. A different methodological approach was applied. Since the materials used in human and veterinary orthodontics (not in implantology) had been tested, osteoblasts were not implanted on the surface of the biomaterial, but have been cultured in the medium containing the products of corrosion. The aim of this study was to determine blood biochemical profile and selected hormone concentrations in bulls fed a diet limited in energy content. Bulls in the experimental group (I) over the 63 days prior to slaughter were provided with ration energy limited to 80% of the maintenance requirement. A total of 366 specimens of 10 fish species inhabiting Lake Sığırcı were examined between April 2009 and February 2010. Inside or outside of these fish, 33 parasite species were identified. From these parasites, 18 monogenean, 5 digenean trematode, 3 cestode, 3 acanthocephalan, 3 nematode, and 1 Mollusca: Bivalvia (glochidia) species were recorded. Diplostomum spp., Tylodelphys clavata, glochidia-larvae, and monogenean species were found to be common parasites in all the fish species examined. This study was performed to evaluate the effect of dietary prebiotic-based mannan-oligosaccharide and \beta -glucan on immune organ weights, white blood cell profiles, and antibody titers against Newcastle and infectious bursal disease viruses in broiler chicks challenged with Salmonella enteritidis. The addition of prebiotics to the diet of unchallenged chicks had no effect on antibody titers and other measured parameters. Salmonella challenging decreased the relative weights of immune organs, increased white blood cells and the heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and decreased the antibody titers against Newcastle and infectious bursal disease viruses. This study aimed to determine the maximum permissible storage times of blood and serum infected with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV). Viral RNA was successfully extracted from blood and serum that were stored at room temperature (RT) for 7 days and was detected by 1-step RT-PCR. The results of this study demonstrate that BVDV-infected blood can be stored at RT for 7 days and that serum can be stored for 10 days without influencing the viral RNA extraction for the detection of BVDV.

A male pony foal aged 2 days, reportedly not passing urine since birth and showing moderate signs of colic, was presented for treatment. The clinical examination revealed moderate tachycardia, tachypnea, and mild abdominal distension. Uroperitoneum was confirmed by peritoneocentesis and abdominal fluid-to-serum creatinine ratio (>2:1). After stabilization of the patient, tube cystotomy was performed using infusion set tubing to bypass the urine, allowing the tear on the caudodorsal wall of the bladder to heal itself without suturing. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), or dermatosparaxis, is a rare hereditary disease of the connective tissue, which is characterized by skin hyperextensibility and laxity. In the present article, the case of a crossbred female spayed cat, at the age of 2 years, was presented with hyperelasticity of the skin, alopecia, and an ulcerative wound on the left hind leg. The animal's dorsum was hyperextensible, smooth to the touch, and could be easily torn with minor traumas. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the present report is the first documented feline case of cutaneous asthenia in Turkey.

The objective of this study was to evaluate antibody titers of challenged broiler chicks fed diets supplemented with soy oil. In a completely randomized design, 120 chicks were assigned to 3 treatments (isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets based on corn-soybean meal containing 0%, 2%, or 4% soy oil), with 4 replicates for each treatment and 10 chicks per replicate. From January to December 2009, 661 fecal samples from natural cases of diarrheic calves were taken by veterinary staff from the Department of Large Animal Internal Medicine of Shiraz Veterinary School and veterinary practitioners in Fars Province, Iran. The samples were taken from 267 diarrheic calves of high-producing dairy cows (HPDCs) and 394 diarrheic calves of average-producing Holstein dairy cows (APDCs). The aim of this study was to determine the normal conjunctival bacterial flora and the effects of sex and age variations on them in healthy cattle in Urmia, Iran. The animals (n = 50) were selected from 2 sexes and divided into 2 age groups. Swabs were taken from the inferior conjunctival sac of both eyes (n = 100) and were cultured on blood and MacConkey agar. All (100%) of the specimens yielded positive bacterial isolations. In the present study, 178 blood samples from buffaloes were tested against indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA), rose bengal plate test (RBPT), microagglutination test (MAT), modified microagglutination test (mMAT), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to select the most suitable test for efficient and effective diagnosis of bovine brucellosis. Scrapie is a fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting small ruminants that causes economic losses in many countries. It is categorized together with other fatal neurodegenerative diseases as a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. Ten New Zealand Albino rabbits were used in this study. A lateral incision was made on the nasal dorsum and a pocket formed in the subperiosteal plane to replace the implant. A fascia lata graft was obtained from the regio femoralis. High-density porous polyethylene (HDPP) was cut and covered with fascia lata. Epididymitis And Orchitis Caused By Brucella Melitensis Biovar 3 In A Merino Ram, Esra Büyükcangaz, Ayli̇n Alasonyalilar Demi̇rer, Sevi̇l Erdenli̇ğ, Sabi̇re Deni̇z Misirlioğlu

This paper describes a case of fibrinopurulent epididymitis and orchitis in a Merino ram owing to Brucella melitensis biovar 3, detected by histopathology, bacteriology, and PCR. Gross lesions included enlargement of the scrotum by abundant fibrinous exudate and adhesions between testicular tunics. Histopathologic lesions were characterized by epididymal abscesses and testicular atrophy. B. melitensis was cultured from the exudate as well as the internal organs of the ram. After conventional biotyping procedures were applied, the isolate was identified as B. melitensis biovar 3. The isolate was also confirmed as Brucella spp. by genus-specific PCR.

The purpose of this study was to describe the ultrasonography appearance and measurements of normal buffalo eyes. Ocular ultrasonographic examinations were performed on 20 adult buffaloes. Transpalpebral ultrasonographic images were obtained with a 6-8 MHz linear transducer in the axial imaging plane. The ultrasonographic appearance of structures within the buffalo eye is similar to that in other species. This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of electron beam radiation on the chemical composition, the \beta-glucan content, the water extract viscosity, the crystallinity of starch, the patterns of protein subunits, and the in vivo digestibility of barley grain. Barley samples were irradiated at doses of 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 kGy under the electron beam. In a completely randomized design, cockerels were fed raw or irradiated samples to determine the digestibility of crude protein and gross energy.
