An Alternative Storage Method For Entomopathogenic Nematodes, Bariş Gülcü, Selçuk Hazir

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Tetra Pak containers were evaluated as an alternative to tissue culture flasks for nematode storage. Our data showed that Tetra Pak containers were an excellent alternative to tissue culture flasks for storage of H. bacteriophora and will more than likely be useful for other entomopathogenic nematode species.

A New Freshwater Amphipod Species, Gammarus Obruki Sp. Nov., From Turkey (Amphipoda: Gammaridae), Murat Özbek

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A new species of freshwater amphipod, Gammarus obruki sp. nov., collected from İnderesi Cave, Bartın Province, Turkey, is described and illustrated. The new species belongs to the Gammarus pulex group. The most discriminant characters of this species are the presence of prolonged extremities, a very long antenna 1 (up to 52 segmented flagellum), densely setose fifth peduncle and flagellar segments of antenna 2, and a fourth peduncle segment that has no long setae. A detailed morphological description and illustrations of the new species are provided and differences from related species are discussed.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In a book chapter containing the first checklist and distribution of Turkish rotifers, published in 1999, were listed 167 taxa. The second checklist, published in 2004, reported 229 rotifer taxa in Turkey. During the 7 years since this checklist process, many studies have been carried out and we have prepared a new checklist of Turkish rotifers in the present study. In all, 341 rotifer taxa have been recorded to date.

Coccoidea species on pine trees (Pinus brutia, P. halepensis, and P. pinea) were collected from natural pine forests, mainly in the Aegean, Mediterranean, and some neighboring (Central Anatolian, Marmara) regions of Turkey in 2008-2011. A total of 14 species were determined from Coccidae (2 species), Diaspididae (8 species) Marchalinidae (1 species), Matsucoccidae (1 species), Monophlebidae (1 species), and Pseudococcidae (1 species), and 2 of them (Gomezmenoraspis pinicola Leonardi and Poaspis intermedia Goux) are new records for Turkish fauna. In this study, 1210 adult specimens of the infraorder Gerromorpha (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) were collected from 47 different localities in eastern Anatolia, the Black Sea region, Kelkit Valley, and Hatay from 2006 to 2010, and the unpublished materials studied were collected from different parts of Turkey by Seidenstücker, Wellschmied, Demel, and Heinzl, and deposited in the Zoologische Staatssammlung München. In this study, 6 genera of 4 families and 15 species were recorded. Of those, 13 were new records for the research areas. First Record Of The Nonindigenous Parasitic Copepod Neoergasilus Japonicus (Harada, 1930) In Turkey, Erhan Soylu, Meral Penbe Soylu

Neoergasilus japonicus (Harada, 1930), a parasitic copepod from the family Ergasilidae (Copepoda, Poecilostomatoida), was observed for the first time in Turkey during a parasitological examination of rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus from Lake Sapanca. The investigation was performed between March 2009 and February 2010, and a total of 132 S. erythrophthalmus were studied at monthly intervals. N. japonicus infection was found from June to November, and during this period the monthly prevalences were 18.2%, 75.0%, 53.8%, 61.5%, 38.5%, and 33.3%, respectively. Seasonal variations in the liver and muscle fatty acid composition of Alburnus chalcoides (Güldenstadt, 1772) from Tödürge Lake (Sivas, Turkey) were determined. The most abundant fatty acids in the investigated seasons and tissues were C16:0, C18:0, C18:1 n-9, C18:1 n-7, C20:4 n-6, C20:5 n-3, and C22:6 n-3. The total saturated fatty acids (SFAs) of the liver and muscle were at the highest in the spring (38.59%) and summer (41.65%), respectively. A large annual acridid biomass should be produced on acridid farms to manufacture high-quality, low-cost feed for the poultry industry. A laboratory experiment was conducted to measure the nymphal mortality, nymphal developmental period, growth indices, and adult life span of 2 common acridids (Oxya hyla hyla and Spathosternum prasiniferum prasiniferum) on 3 food plants (Dactyloctenium aegyptium, Cynodon dactylon, and Brachiaria mutica). First Record Of The Genus Trichopsomyia Williston, 1888 (Diptera: Syrphidae) From Iran, Samad Khaghaninia, Abbas Shakeryari, Rüstem Hayat

The genus Trichopsomyia Williston, 1888 is recorded for the first time from Iran. Trichopsomyia flavitarsis (Meigen, 1822) and T. lucida (Meigen, 1822) were determined based on the material collected from a wetland in Aynali forests in 2010. A key to the species of the genus in northwestern Iran is prepared and photographs of the specimens are provided.

The study was carried out between 2009 and 2011 in the inner part of western Anatolia (Afyonkarahisar, Kütahya, and Uşak), and 18 species were recorded for the first time for the Turkish Limoniidae fauna. Four species of the genus Perigrapha Lederer are reviewed in Iran. Two species, P. annau Varga & Ronkay, 1991 and P. flora Hreblay, 1996, are reported for the first time from the fauna of Iran. Various vertebrate-type steroid and gonadotropin hormones have been identified in invertebrates, including insects; however, studies in this area are not sufficient to presume a generalized role for these hormones. We identified testosterone, progesterone, and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in the whole-body homogenates of Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and its parasitoid Pimpla turionellae L. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). Testosterone concentration significantly decreased from early instars to last instars and pupal stages of G. mellonella; however, no significant difference was observed in progesterone levels at different stages. Feeding habits of the Asiatic jackal were studied through 98 scats collected between January 2009 and March 2010 from different sites in Potohar, Pakistan. The overall frequency of occurrence of plant items was 54.0%; the animal prey item frequency was 46.2%. Among the plant foods, Ziziphus was eaten year round, whereas wild olive, grasses, and wheat grains were the chief components of the diet during all seasons except summer. Talpa davidiana is the least known species of the genus Talpa, and the karyotype of this species is still unknown. Its distribution records are also very scattered. The karyological, cranial, and pelvic characteristics of 2 samples from Kızıldağ in Adana Province were analyzed for the first time. It was determined that T. davidiana has 2n = 34, NF = 66, and NFa = 62. The X chromosome was large and metacentric and the Y chromosome was dot-like acrocentric. New Record Of Lynx Lynx (L., 1758) In Turkey (Mammalia: Carnivora), İrfan Albayrak

This paper reports the morphological characteristics of a subadult lynx, Lynx lynx, collected in 2005 from Ardanuç in Artvin Province. Pelage color, hair structure, and some cranial measurements of this specimen and other recent records of Turkish lynxes are given, including that from Beyaz Dağ in Şırnak Province in the southeastern part of Turkey collected during field work and a skin from an unknown locality in Isparta. It was concluded that Turkish lynxes are likely to represent the subspecies L. lynx dinniki based on a comparison of morphometric values given in the literature.

The distribution of Aphanius dispar dispar (Rüppell, 1829) populations in Iran, which are mostly known from the eastern and southern parts of the country, and a new population in western Iran about 50 km northwest of Ilam City and 20 km east of the Iran-Iraq border are recorded. The habitat is an odd environment with sulfide water in a remote area. This is the first report of a population of this species in western Iran and at a latitude this high within its distribution range.

The stilt bug Metatropis rufescens (Herrich-Schaeffer, 1835) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Berytidae) is reported as a new record for Turkey and also represents the first record of the tribe Metatropini Henry, 1997 for the Turkish fauna. The specimens of the species were collected from its host plant, Circaea lutetiana L. (Onagraceae), in the forest area of Rize Province. The biology and habitat characteristics of the species are briefly discussed.

On The Occurrence Of Ascorhynchus Castelli (Dohrn, 1881) (Arthropoda: Pycnogonida) In The Aegean Sea, Cengi̇z Koçak

Sampling studies in the Turkish Aegean Sea revealed the occurrence of a sea spider species, Ascorhynchus castelli (Dohrn, 1881). The presence of this species is reported for the first time from the Aegean Sea and the second time from the eastern Mediterranean Sea. This record further extends the known distribution of the species from the Turkish Mediterranean Sea to the Aegean Sea in the eastern Mediterranean. This is also the first record of the species from shallow waters in the eastern Mediterranean Sea (10 m).

Over the past several years, the authors of this work have investigated external structures of microdrile oligochaetes using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Both published and still-unpublished data have revealed new structures of interest, especially those associated with mating, ciliate sense receptors, chaetae, and dorsal pores. Mating systems can be classified in 3 categories: grasping, coupling, and embracing. Ciliate sense receptors can be classified as poorly defined (unelevated), sensory buds, or papillae, and are provided with blunt cilia and/or sharp cilia. Aquatic oligochaetes were studied in 2 lowland regions (the Chennai and Tiruvallur districts) and a mountainous area (Ooty) in Tamil Nadu, southern India. Quantitative core samples, 2.5 cm in diameter, were collected monthly from April 2005 to March 2006 in Kodungaiyur Swamp and Pandinellur Swamp, the 2 main sites commercially exploited for aquatic Oligochaeta in Chennai. Random qualitative samples were collected from other sites using corers or strainers. In total, 9 naidids and 4 tubificids were identified during this survey. The oligochaete fauna of freshwater reservoirs and rivers in North Pribaikalye was investigated for the first time. In total, 38 oligochaete species were collected. Of these, 16 species belong to the subfamily Naidinae, 6 to Pristininae, and 10 to the 3 subfamilies of Tubificidae. In addition, 5 species belonging to Enchytraeidae and 1 widespread species belonging to the family Lumbriculidae, Lumbriculus variegatus, were collected.

Microtaxonomy Of Fragmenting Enchytraeus Species Using Molecular Markers, With A Comment On Species Complexes In Enchytraeids, Rut Collado, Eva Hass-Cordes, Ruediger Schmelz

Populations of Enchytraeus that reproduce by fragmentation are distributed worldwide, but their species-level taxonomy is unresolved because morphological differences are inconclusive. Therefore, we compared the isozyme and RAPD-PCR patterns of 5 populations of fragmenting enchytraeids from widely distant localities (Japan, Iran, Greece, and Brazil). Among these populations, 3 were identified (E. japonensis, E. bigeminus, and E. dudichi) and 2 were unidentified. Multiple isozyme bands suggested polyploidy in all investigated populations. In all RAPD-PCR algorithms except 1, the fragmenting group formed a cluster separate from 2 nonfragmenting Enchytraeus species. This study deals with the structure of echinoderm assemblages and their relationships with the biotic and abiotic conditions in the Çanakkale Strait in 2006 and 2007. A total of 25 echinoderm species were found, 4 species of which [Amphiura securigera (Düben & Koren, 1846); Amphiura lacazei Guille, 1976; Amphiura cherbonnieri Guille, 1972; and Thyone fusus (O.F. Müller, 1776)] were new records for Turkish fauna; 1 species [Ophiopsila annulosa (M. Sars, 1859)] was new for the Turkish Strait System; and 22 species were first reports for the Çanakkale Strait. Forty lemon-yellow tree frogs, Hyla savignyi, collected from Kırıkhan, Turkey (25 in April 2009, 15 in April 2010), were examined for helminths, and 21 frogs were found to be infected. One species of Monogenea (Polystoma integerrimum), 3 species of Digenea (Diplodiscus subclavatus, Halipegus kessleri, and Pleurogenoides medians), 1 species of Cestoda (Nematotaenia dispar), and 2 species of Nematoda (Aplectana brumpti and Cosmocerca commutata) were found. Hyla savignyi represents a new host record for Polystoma integerrimum, Diplodiscus subclavatus, Halipegus kessleri, Pleurogenoides medians, Aplectana brumpti, and Cosmocerca commutata.

Two different myxosporean fish parasites (Myxobolus episquamalis Egusa, Maeno & Sorimachi, 1990 and Myxobolus ichkeulensis Bahri & Marques, 1996) are reported based on samples found on the scales and gill arches of flathead mullet (Mugil cephalus) captured from Çamlık Lagoon, located on the northeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Both parasites were found for the first time on flathead mullet from the Turkish coasts. In addition to the data concerning spore morphology and the dimensions of both species, new additional taxonomic observations are presented. Furthermore, asynchronous polar capsule maturation was observed in transmission electron microscope images of both species.

Some parasitic hymenopterans were reared from their host insects found on the stems and branches of Heracleum platytaenium Boiss., which contains furanocoumarins that are insect repellents and suppress growth in some species. Plant materials with insects were collected from the vicinity of Kızılcahamam in Ankara Province in July-September 2008. Some aspects concerning the reproduction, growth, and population dynamics of Plesionika martia were studied. Individuals were collected monthly between May 2008 and April 2009 during surveys conducted using a commercial trawl vessel. Samples were collected from Sığacık Bay (Aegean Sea, eastern Mediterranean) at depths ranging from 494 to 550 m. A total of 2110 individuals (766 males and 1344 females) were caught during these monthly surveys.
