Clostridium perfringens is a gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium that causes a wide range of diseases in humans and animals. The purposes of this study were to determine, using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the clostridial toxins in intestinal samples of lambs with suspected enterotoxemia; to conduct molecular typing of C. perfringens isolates; and to investigate the presence of the genes of 4 major toxins (\alpha, \beta, \epsilon, and \iota) in the isolates by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The short-term effects of 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES) and whole blood (WB) resuscitations in hypovolemic shock (HS) on invasive and noninvasive hemodynamic variables were studied from the clinical point of view in 20 mature healthy male Beagle dogs. The present study was conducted to determine the presence of enterotoxin and verotoxin levels in Turkish cheeses sold in retail stores in İstanbul, Turkey. For this purpose, 150 cheese samples (25 pieces of each: white pickled cheese, tulum cheese, mihaliç cheese, hellim cheese, örgü cheese, and civil cheese) were analyzed microbiologically for Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and E. coli O157:H7, and the presence of the toxins was identified using an ELISA test (RIDASCREEN® Set A, B, C, D, E and Verotoxin). Avian influenza (AI) is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. Among these AI viruses, only serotypes H5 and H7 are considered highly pathogenic in poultry. However, serotype H9N2 has also been found to produce severe respiratory tract infections in chickens. Migratory birds of the world are a natural reservoir of influenza viruses of all subtypes. This is the first report of isolation and molecular survey of AI virus from migratory and wild resident birds in Boushehr, Iran. Weanling crossbred pigs were used in a 5-week trial to evaluate the effects of biotin and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) challenge on serum cytokine concentrations and humoral immunoresponse. Although not significant, there was a trend towards reduced interferon-\gamma concentration in the challenged pigs compared to the controls, especially at 14 and 21 days postinoculation (dpi). Biotin supplementation with 50 or 200 µg/kg biotin improved these levels, with higher doses producing an earlier and stronger response. The effects of some heavy metals Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Ag(I) on carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity from rainbow trout (RT) muscle were investigated. Moreover, the effects of these metals on the expression of heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) gene in muscle tissue were examined by real-time quantitative PCR (RT-PCR) in muscle tissue after exposure to the metals at the end of 6, 12, 24, and 48 h. Growth Performance And Intestinal Histomorphology In Egg-Type Growing Roosters Fed Recycled Food Waste Containing Effective Microorganisms, Jassada Ruttanavut, Koh En Yamauchi

To evaluate the effects of a recycled food waste (eco-feed) containing effective microorganisms derived from Japanese mugwort silage juice (EJP) on growth performance and intestinal histomorphology, 48 male chickens of 14 days old were divided into 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60% EJP diet groups. At 20 weeks of age, body weight gain was similar in the 20% EJP group but lower in the 40% and 60% EJP groups (P < 0.05) compared to that in the control group. The relative total intestinal length and weight tended to be long and heavy, respectively, in the 20% and 40% EJP groups, but short and light, respectively, in the 60% EJP group. Although numerous villi were found in the jejunum and ileum of all EJP groups, the villus height and size observed in these groups were smaller. Cell area and cell mitosis number in the duodenum and jejunum of all EJP groups were lower than those of the control group (P < 0.01). Epithelial cells on the villus apical surface of the 20% EJP group showed morphology similar to that of cells on the villus apical surface of the control group in all of the intestinal segments. The growth performance data suggested that EJP could be incorporated at up to a level of 20% in chicken diets. The intestinal histological results suggested that long-term feeding of an EJP diet at up to the 40% level may result in a long and heavy intestine by increasing the numbers of miniature intestinal villi.

The effects of zinc on growth performance, activities of enzymes, and concentrations of hormones were investigated in this study. Crossbred (Duroc × Landrace × Large White) piglets (initial body weight: 26.66 ± 2.45 kg) were randomly assigned into 4 groups receiving a basal diet and were supplemented with 60, 300, 1000, or 3000 mg/kg of zinc (as ZnSO_4^.7H_2O). The results showed that supplementation of zinc at 3000 mg/kg increased (P < 0.05) the average daily feed intake, weight gain, gain/feed, and relative organ weight, and promoted the activities of alkaline phosphatase and Cu-Zn superoxide (P < 0.05) by 84.17% and 49.86%, respectively, when compared with the control group. It also led to higher hepatic metallothionein content and tissue zinc concentration (P < 0.05) than in the control group. Furthermore, the concentrations of insulin and neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the 3000 mg/kg group were increased (P < 0.05) by 55.19% and 26.53%, respectively, compared to the control group. The present study suggests that pharmacological dietary supplementation of zinc increased growth performance, activities of enzymes, tissue zinc concentrations, and plasma insulin and NPY concentrations. Ectopic adrenal tissue has been reported to occur in equine ovaries and testes, more frequently in stressed, ill, or pregnant animals. In this study, the presence and endocrine activity of ectopic adrenal tissue in equine gonads was investigated. In 278 pairs of ovaries and 100 pairs of testes, the anomaly was observed with a comparable prevalence of 6%-9%; the tissue appeared as nodules, found on the ovarian surface and in the mediastinum. Microscopically, these usually appeared disorganized, with a tendency toward differentiation into the zonae in larger nodules. A 3-year-old female dog was referred to the clinics of İstanbul University with the complaint of abdominal distention. On the basis of the clinical findings and ultrasonography, a mass was detected in the left ovary. An ovariohysterectomy was performed. Grossly, the mass, with dimensions of 15 × 11 × 8 cm, weighed 1.2 kg and contained hairs, cysts, fat, bone, and cartilage on the cut surface. Histology revealed the occurrence of well-differentiated components of all 3 germ layers and the mass was diagnosed as a benign mature cystic teratoma.

This study aimed to investigate the histopathological changes that occurred in the wound of the sole ulcer located on the hooves of dairy cattle. A total of 12 Holstein-Frisian dairy cows suffering from sole ulcer were studied. Postmortem spermatozoa recovery is an important tool for harvesting germplasm from genetically meritorious animals and endangered species. The principal motive of this study was to find out whether ram spermatozoa within epididymides kept at 4 °C for 48 h retain their quality in terms of progressive motility, viability, and acrosomal status. Twenty-four testicles with attached epididymides were collected with 8 samples each processed at 0, 24, and 48 h of storage. A good number of motile spermatozoa could be recovered from epididymides by incision method with up to 48 h of storage, although their quality declined significantly (P < 0.05) as postmortem storage time increased (motility: 83.33 ± 1.05%, 63.33 ± 2.47%, and 44.17 ± 1.53%; and epididymal sperm output (millions): 3500.00 ± 73.97, 1220.00 ± 1.01, and 666.67 ± 19.78 for 0 (control), 24, and 48 h, respectively). Viability and intact acrosomes (%) were also acceptable, although they decreased significantly with up to 24 h of storage. In conclusion, ram epididymides could be stored at 4 °C for 48 h when epididymal spermatozoa cannot be immediately harvested and cryopreserved.

These studies were carried out on 14 adult (9 males and 5 females) Equus przewalskii f. caballus (Linnaeus, 1758) horses, using both the skulls and mandibles. All of the material originated from 3 Polish archaeological sites that date back to the Early Medieval period. The most extensive craniometrical investigations consisted of 40 skull measurements and 16 mandible measurements. In some cases, the conditions of the artifacts narrowed the number of accessible osteometric points. The effects of prestorage leukoreduction and storage duration on the in vitro quality parameters of canine packed red blood cells (pRBCs) stored in saline-adenine-glucose-mannitol (SAGM) were investigated. Hematological, biochemical, and morphological changes in filtered and unfiltered pRBCs were determined each week during 42 days of storage. All of the parameters changed significantly during storage. The effects of leukoreduction on leukocyte and erythrocyte count, packed cell volume, hemoglobin content, and erythrocyte morphology were significant. While supernatant K increased during storage, glucose, Cl, and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) concentrations decreased. First Record Of Abnormal Pigmentation In A Wild Common Sole, Solea Solea L., From The Aegean Sea, Okan Akyol, Hali̇l Şen

On 2 June 2010, an abnormally pigmented specimen of Solea solea L. with a total length of 222 mm was obtained near Tuzla, from the İzmir Bay of the Aegean Sea. This is the first record of abnormal pigmentation in the wild common sole from the Aegean Sea. The specimen fish is patterned with both hypermelanosis on the blind side and hypomelanosis on the ocular side. This kind of malpigmentation in any flatfish is not typical.

Thysanoptera Fauna Of The Lakes Region, Turkey, İrfan Tunç, Şeri̇fe Ünal Bahşi̇, Hüseyi̇n Sümbül

The Thysanoptera fauna of the Lakes Region of Turkey was studied in 1990-1992. A total of 3173 specimens from 397 samples were examined. The study revealed 74 Thysanoptera species and 45 of them are new records for the region. Three genera, namely Bregmatothrips Hood, Eremiothrips Priesner, and Iridothrips Priesner; and 5 species, namely Bregmatothrips dimorphus (Priesner), Eremiothrips dubius (Priesner), Eremiothrips taghizadehi (zur Strassen), Iridothrips iridis (Watson), and Mycterothrips annulicornis (Uzel) are new records for the Turkish fauna. Graecoanatolica Radoman, 1973 is a remarkable genus of Hydrobiidae, recognized with its disjunct distribution between Macedonia, Greece (Thessaly), and Turkey (Lakes Region). However, the current distribution of the genus is restricted to Turkey, as the 2 Balkan species have been declared extinct. In this study, a taxonomic revision of the Graecoanatolica species in Turkey is presented. The larval parasitoids and larval diseases of Malacosoma neustria (L.) (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) in various host plants were investigated in Erzurum Province, Turkey, during 2004 and 2005. The larval parasitoids were reared in a laboratory, and a total of 29 parasitoid species were established in association with the larvae of M. neustria in the families Tachinidae (Diptera), Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, and Chalcidoidea (Hymenoptera). Of the 6 tachinid parasitoids, Pales pavida (Meigen) was the most prevalent species and accounted for 25% of the tachinid records. The Calanoid copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis (G.O. Sars, 1863) is recorded from Turkish inland waters for the first time. Males and females of Eudiaptomus gracilis were consistently found during 6 sampling periods in the Yeşilırmak River. The species was collected from the Yeşilırmak River and Suat Uğurlu and Hasan Uğurlu dam lakes in the Black Sea region and detailed descriptions of both sexes are given.

In the present study, the LC_{50} of nickel and its impact on the behaviour of 2 species of freshwater prawns, Macrobrachium lamarrei (H. Milne Edwards) and Macrobrachium dayanum (Henderson) was evaluated. An inverse relationship between LC_{50} values and exposure duration was obtained. Nickel was found to be 6.33 times more toxic to M. lamarrei than to M. dayanum. Nickel exposure increased aggression and loss of balance in both species of prawns in a concentration-dependent manner with both parameters being higher in M. dayanum (416.47 mg/L) than in M. lamarrei (65.77 mg/L). Tephritis ozaslani sp. nov. is described from Artvin Province of Turkey and placed in the T. pulchra species group. The key to the T. pulchra group is provided, which includes 9 species. The main characters that distinguish the new species from the closely resembling Palaearctic species, T. cometa israilis Freidberg, T. acanthiophilopsis Hering, T. erdemlii Kütük, T. divisa Rondani, T. recurrens Loew, T. merzi Freidberg & Kütük, and T. hurvitzi Freidberg, are discussed. In addition, Inula oculus christi L. (Asteraceae) is determined as a host plant of the new species.

Fifteen Lyciasalamandra atifi and 14 L. fazilae from Antalya Province, Turkey, were examined for helminths. Three species of nematodes, Rhabdias bermani, Aplectana acuminata, and Cosmocerca longicauda, were found in L. atifi and 2 species, Aplectana linstowi and Cosmocerca longicauda, were found in L. fazilae. L. atifi represents a new host record for each of the 3 species of nematodes reported; L. fazilae represents a new host record for each of the 2 species of nematodes reported.
