Raptors Present But Unobserved: Detectability At A Western Migration Watch-Site And Its Effect On Trend Analysis, Eric G. Nolte May 2012

Raptors Present But Unobserved: Detectability At A Western Migration Watch-Site And Its Effect On Trend Analysis, Eric G. Nolte

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Annual counts of migrating raptors (Accipitriformes, Falconiformes) are used as indices of population size. Variation in the proportion of the raptor population counted may decrease precision of trend estimates, thereby reducing power of inference. The proportion counted is the product of sample coverage and probability of detection. It is possible to improve the power of trend analysis by the adoption of techniques, such as double-observer or distance sampling, which estimate the probability of detection. I used a dependent double-observer method to estimate detectability at the annual fall raptor migration count at Lucky Peak, Idaho, in 2009 and 2010. …

Investigation Of A Locus On Chromosome 9 For Contributions To Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome In Broilers, Sriram Krishnamoorthy May 2012

Investigation Of A Locus On Chromosome 9 For Contributions To Pulmonary Hypertension Syndrome In Broilers, Sriram Krishnamoorthy

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although the ascites syndrome in chickens has been investigated for years, it continues to inflict financial losses to the world poultry industry. It is estimated that 8% of the 361 million broiler deaths are due to ascites leading to losses of millions of dollars annually. Efforts to curb the incidence of ascites are typically designed to slow early growth. This limits the birds' ability to show its true genetic potential and impacts later yields. In 1994 lines divergent for susceptibility to ascites were established from a commercial sire line through sibling selection of birds reared at local altitude after testing …

Genetic Analysis Of Chromosomal Regions Affecting Sperm Mobility In The Chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus), Sharath Chandra Munnaluri May 2012

Genetic Analysis Of Chromosomal Regions Affecting Sperm Mobility In The Chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus), Sharath Chandra Munnaluri

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project is focused on determining the contributions of particular genetic loci to low sperm mobility in the chicken. Sperm mobility has been shown to be a major determinant of male fertility in broiler breeders. A whole genome SNP scan identified chromosomal regions (QTLs) that control sperm mobility. I used microsatellites from 4 chromosomal regions ( 15.151 on chromosome 6, 12.435 on chromosome Z, 12.341 on chromosome Z, and 17.214 on chromosome Z) to determine the association of these regions with sperm mobility in experimental lines divergently selected for mobility phenotype. Determination of the genetics underlying sperm mobility will identify …

Cell-Mediated Immunity In Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus, Rajeshwari Parida

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus is a significant swine pathogen which exhibits considerable sequence diversity. In an attempt to identify highly conserved T-cell epitopes contained in proteins of this virus, we examined heptadecamer peptides spanning the sequence of the PRRSV nonstructural proteins 9, 10 and 11, all of them are highly conserved, for their ability to elicit a recall proliferative and interferon-gamma response in peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from pigs immunized against the type-II PRRSV strain FL-12. These studies led to the identification of seven peptides, two from each NSP 9 and NSP 10 and, three from NSP …

Nest And Brood Site Selection And Survival Of Greater Prairie-Chickens In The Eastern Sandhills Of Nebraska, Lars Anderson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Greater prairie-chickens (Tympanuchus cupido pinnata) are a grassland bird species of conservation concern. Although greater prairie-chickens have declined over much of their range, the Nebraska Sandhills has the largest population in North America. However, the responses of nest and brood site selection and survival to vegetation characteristics are unknown. I studied prairie-chickens on private rangelands in Rock and Brown Counties from 2009-2011. I fitted 139 females with radio collars to locate nest and brood sites and to determine nest and brood survival rates. Females were trapped on leks during the breeding season and I monitored them throughout the …

Clam (Corbicula Fluminea) As A Potential Sentinel Of Human Norovirus Contamination In Freshwater, Xunyan Ye May 2012

Clam (Corbicula Fluminea) As A Potential Sentinel Of Human Norovirus Contamination In Freshwater, Xunyan Ye

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and validate the use of the clam Corbicula fluminea as a sentinel of human noroviruses (HuNoV) contamination in freshwater. The first specific aim was to develop a new method to extract HuNoV RNA from contaminated bivalves (e.g. oysters, clams) that would be much faster than existing methods. The procedure developed includes an initial total RNA extraction using TRI Reagent, followed by HuNoV RNA concentration and purification using biotinylated probe-capture technology. HuNoV RNA is finally detected by real-time RT-PCR. Using bivalve homogenates spiked with HuNoV, 100 PCR detection units of the virus was …

In Vitro And In Vivo Comparison Of The Pathogenicity Of Four Influenza Virus Strains, Brett L. Hurst May 2012

In Vitro And In Vivo Comparison Of The Pathogenicity Of Four Influenza Virus Strains, Brett L. Hurst

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Influenza viruses cause between 3 and 5 million cases of respiratory infection each year and are responsible for between 250 and 500 thousand deaths. Two avenues for the treatment and prevention of influenza virus infections are vaccination and antiviral chemotherapy. Prevention is largely accomplished through vaccination. While vaccines remain the preferred method for controlling the spread of influenza, antiviral treatment is important for severe infections caused by new and emerging virus strains. Occasionally new viruses emerge to which the population has no previous immunity. Such was the case when the pandemic H1N1 influenza virus appeared in 2009. When new viruses …

Use Of Rumen Modifiers To Manipulate Ruminal Fermentation And Improve Nutrient Utilization And Lactational Performance Of Dairy Cows, Christopher M. Dschaak

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A series of lactation studies reported in this dissertation hypothesized that supplementing different rumen modifiers would have consistent responses on ruminal fermentation and lactational performance under optimal rumen conditions.

The first experiment investigated the influence of magnesium exchanged zeolite on ruminal fermentation and lactational performance. Intake of dry matter (DM), milk yield, milk fat, and feed efficiency were not affected. Milk protein concentration tended (P = 0.15) to be higher for cows fed the zeolite. Ruminal pH tended to increase (P = 0.11) by feeding the sodium bicarbonate or the zeolite.

A second lactation experiment determined …

A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of adding an exogenous proteolytic enzyme (EPE) on growth performance and ruminal fermentation characteristics of beef steers fed growing and finishing diets containing 30% dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS).

In the first experiment, 48 beef steers were divided into two treatments: DDGS diets with and without EPE. Dry matter intake (DMI) was increased (P = 0.02) by the addition of EPE, but neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility was decreased on the growing phase. For the finishing phase, average daily gain ( …

Effects Of Cache Valley Particulate Matter On Human Lung Cells, Todd L. Watterson May 2012

Effects Of Cache Valley Particulate Matter On Human Lung Cells, Todd L. Watterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the wintertime, residents of the Cache Valley are very aware of the poor air quality that occurs during cold-air inversion episodes. If one somehow avoids the radio and television announcements as well as the electronic roadside signs indicating poor air quality and encouraging less driving, one need only to look upward toward the mountains that surround the valley and notice the lack of daytime visibility. This lack of visibility and health warnings are due to particulate air pollution or particulate matter (PM). PM is only one of many types of regulated air pollution but is the one that occurs …

Territories,Territoriality, And Conservation Of The Louisiana Waterthrush And Its Habitat, The Watershed Of The Upper Buffalo National River, Leesia Cheryl Marshall

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Louisiana Waterthrush, Parkesia motacilla, is a migratory wood-warbler and breeding season resident of the eastern United States. Males defend breeding territories that extend linearly along clear, fast-flowing, gravel-bottomed, forest streams. Defense includes two song types, primary and extended song. As riverine specialists, birds rely upon aquatic invertebrates as prey and riparian habitat features for nesting. They use a unique foraging maneuver, leaf-pulling, that involves picking up or pulling a leaf from water, and turning it over to search for prey. Their relationship with riparian habitat introduces potential for Louisiana Waterthrushes to serve as indicators of stream health. The …

A Role Of Environmental Components In Autoimmune Vitiligo Of Smyth Line Chickens, Lei Dong May 2012

A Role Of Environmental Components In Autoimmune Vitiligo Of Smyth Line Chickens, Lei Dong

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Smyth line (SL) of chickens is a well-established animal model for the study of spontaneous autoimmune vitiligo, displaying all the characteristics of human vitiligo. In humans, phenolic derivative 4-tertiary butyl phenol (4-TBP) has been shown to trigger vitiligo in susceptible individuals. In vitiligo-prone SL-chickens, live turkey herpesvirus (HVT) infection at hatch was identified as the most effective trigger of SL-vitiligo expression. This dissertation examined the role of the environmental factors 4-TBP and HVT in the etiology of SL-vitiligo. Specifically, the generation of reactive-oxygen-species by melanocyte-containing feather tissue (MC-FT) and cultured melanocytes in response to 4-TBP exposure in vitro (Study …

Timing Of Exposure To Toxic Tall Fescue: Effects On Beef Cattle Reproduction, Matthew Burns May 2012

Timing Of Exposure To Toxic Tall Fescue: Effects On Beef Cattle Reproduction, Matthew Burns

All Dissertations

Tall fescue [Schedonorus phoenix (Scop.) Holub] is a native grass of Europe and was not widely used in the U.S. until the early to mid 1900's. Toxic tall fescue (E+) is the predominate, cool-season forage used in beef cattle production in the southern U.S., but grazing this forage is known to negatively impact growth and may impair reproductive performance. Two- and 3-yr old (young) beef cattle respond differently to synchronization protocols and have higher energy requirements compared with mature cows under normal management conditions. Interestingly, limited data indicate that young cattle reproductive performance is negatively impacted to a greater extent …

Endocrine Control Of Ovulation And Coordination Of Fetal And Uterine Interrelationships In Dairy Cattle, Jillian Fain

All Dissertations

Assessing pitfalls in reproductive efficiency of dairy cattle is often confounded by milk production, animal health, energy balance, and animal management practices, among others. Methods to reduce inefficiencies are classified in the following studies as maternal endocrine management, conceptus recognition, and uterine environment. The goal was to derive some insight into the mechanisms pre and post conception that can alter rates of pregnancy establishment. The initial study ascertained the ability to reduce progesterone (P4) dominance through additional PGF2-alpha (PGF) supplementation on efficiency of timed artificial insemination (TAI) in the Ovsynch® program. The single PGF animals received the standard Ovsynch® protocol …

Feed Supplementation With Natural Extracts Of Cranberry And Its Efficacy On Campylobacter Colonization In Poultry, Ann Woo-Ming May 2012

Feed Supplementation With Natural Extracts Of Cranberry And Its Efficacy On Campylobacter Colonization In Poultry, Ann Woo-Ming

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Campylobacter spp. has been identified as one of the leading causative agents of food borne diarrheal illness. Epidemiological evidence has shown that poultry is the main source for human infection. Poultry are asymptomatic carriers of Campylobacter within their gastrointestinal tract, with colonization levels reaching 106-108 cfu/g cecal content. Surveys of domestic poultry flocks have estimated that approximately 90% of flocks are positive for Campylobacter colonization. Risk assessment studies have determined that by reducing levels of Campylobacter colonization during rearing, incidences of human infection will be significantly reduced. Currently there are no consistently effective treatments to eliminate Campylobacter from poultry flocks. …

Treatment With Or Elimination Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (Vegfa) Results In Altered Mrna Abundance Of Undifferentiated Spermatogonia Niche, Renewal And Differentiation Factors, Kevin M. Sargent

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (VEGFA) and its receptors are important for vascular development in the testis. Roles of VEGFA have been proposed in undifferentiated spermatogonia where proangiogenic isoforms are suggested to promote their self-renewal while antiangiogenic isoforms stimulate their differentiation. Thus, we treated male rats in vivo (perinatally with IP injections from P0-P2) with different VEGFA isoforms or an antibody to VEGFAxxxb (antiangiogenic isoforms) to determine if this would affect testis morphogenesis, expression of genes regulating the spermatgonial stem cell (SSC) niche and genes that regulate cell survival. Testis morphogenesis with VEGFA164 (1mg) isoform treatment increased cord area, reduced …

Three separate large pen commercial feeding trials with approximately 9,000 heifers with either eight or ten reps/treatment were conducted at a Western Feedlots Ltd.- High River, a commercial feedyard near High River, AB, Canada. For all three experiments, Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to segregate feed barley. In Exp. 1, barley was segregated based on digestible energy (DE) content as predicted by NIRS and heifers were fed low or high DE barley, or a 50:50 blend of the two. Feeding low DE barley improved weight gain, dry matter intake (DMI), and mortality; with little effect on carcass composition compared …

Out With The Old And In With The New: A Comparison Between Molecular And Traditional Techniques To Identify Parasitized Birds, Christian Guerrero Apr 2012

Out With The Old And In With The New: A Comparison Between Molecular And Traditional Techniques To Identify Parasitized Birds, Christian Guerrero

College of Arts and Sciences Poster Presentations

Traditionally, the identification of blood parasites has been based on visual examination of blood smears. This approach depends on individual expertise in making blood smears and identifying parasites, which can vary widely from person to person. Recent work has shown that reading blood smears is significantly less sensitive than using molecular studies in identification. Thus, the accuracy of the data can fluctuate greatly. This project compares the ability of investigators to identify infected birds using microscopes and blood smears with their ability to identify infected birds through molecular analysis of blood from the same sample.

During fall migration (September – …

See No, Smell No, Taste No Evil: How Sage-Grouse Detect Toxic Sagebrush, K. Gehlken, B. Robb, S. Agafonov, J. Forbey Apr 2012

See No, Smell No, Taste No Evil: How Sage-Grouse Detect Toxic Sagebrush, K. Gehlken, B. Robb, S. Agafonov, J. Forbey

College of Arts and Sciences Poster Presentations

There is increasing evidence that sage-grouse selectively consume individual and species of sagebrush that have the lowest concentrations of chemical defenses, or toxins. We propose that this selection requires the ability to see, smell or taste specific chemicals or groups of chemicals that vary quantitatively and qualitatively in sagebrush available throughout the winter range of sage-grouse. We are developing methods to determine if and how selected and avoided sagebrush may differ in color, smell and taste. We used ultraviolet and near infrared detectors to determine the variation in the "color" of phenolics in sagebrush. We used gas chromatography to determine …

Additions To The Taiwan Marine Eel Fauna With First Records Of Three Rare Moray Eels (Anguilliformes: Muraenidae), Kar-Hoe Loh, Kwang-Tsao Shao, Hong-Ming Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The specimens of three new records of moray eels (Anguilliformes: Muraenidae) were identified for the first time off the eastern (Changbin) and southern (Kenting) coast of Taiwan. They were Enchelynassa canina (Quoy and Gaimard), Gymnothorax elegans Bliss and Gymnothorax fuscomaculatus (Schultz). The monotypic genus Enchelynassa which had only one species in the genus was also a newly recorded genus to Taiwan. In this paper, we reported the three rare moray species, included diagnostic characters and the fresh coloration on whole body, head, dorsal and ventral sides; as well as their dentitions; and the key to the relative species.
