Polydactyly In Arctic Foxes (Vulpes Lagopus), Andrzej Gugolek, Janusz Strychalski, Malgorzata Konstantynowicz
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Seven Arctic fox puppies were found to have an extra claw (resembling a canine dewclaw) on their thoracic limb. These individuals came from 2 litters born of 2 different females. The "dewclaw" comprised a claw loosely connected with the limb by soft tissue, and it had the third phalanx (PIII) and a vestigial phalanx. Our results show that the presence of an extra claw on one or both hands in some Arctic fox puppies may, but does not have to, be a dominant trait. The differences between the 2 analyzed litters support the hypothesis that the mode of inheritance of …
A Study Of The Reproductive Performance, Milk Yield, Milk Constituents, And Somatic Cell Count Of Holstein-Friesian And Montbeliarde Cows, Atakan Koç
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to compare the reproductive performance, milk yield, milk constituents, and somatic cell count of Montbeliarde (M) and Holstein-Friesian (HF) cows. The number of data points used for the first calving age (FCA), calving interval (CI), milk traits, and milk constituents were 87, 264, 270 and 108 for M cows and 167, 450, 491, and 114 for HF cows. The effects of herd on FCA, CI, 305-day milk yield (305-dMY), and protein content (PC) were determined to be statistically significant (P < 0.05), as were the effects of breed on FCA, 305-dMY, fat content (FC), and somatic cell count (SCC). For M cows, the average FCA, CI, 305-dMY, FC, PC, and SCC were found to be 952.2 ± 14.67 days, 391.6 ± 5.75 days, 5956.5 ± 84.73 kg, 3.55 ± 0.07%, 2.93 ± 0.04%, and 138,644 cells/mL, respectively. When determined for HF cows, the average values of the same characteristics were shown to be 909.1 ± 13.66 days, 399.6 ± 5.93 days, 6655.3 ± 109.57 kg, 3.26 ± 0.10%, 2.85 ± 0.06%, and 199,022 cells/mL, respectively. M cows had lower 305-dMY values but higher milk constituents and SCCs than the HF breed. The high temperatures and humidity observed in the summer season caused a significant decrease in the reproduction and milk constituents of cows subject to Mediterranean climatic conditions.

Fasciolosis caused by Fasciola spp. (Platyhelminthes: Trematoda: Digenea) is considered the most important helminth infection of ruminants in tropical countries, causing considerable socioeconomic problems. Samples identified morphologically as Fasciola sp. in Equus caballus host species from the city of Tunis (north of Tunisia) were genetically characterized, for the first time, by sequences of the 1st (ITS-1), the 5.8S and 2nd (ITS-2) Internal Transcribed Spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA). Comparison of the ITS of the Tunisian samples with sequences of Fasciola spp. from GenBank showed that the specimens examined had sequences identical to those of F. hepatica sequences selected …

Chronic Continuous Perfusion Of The Hibernation Triggering Opioid Dadle Did Not Cause Any Major Physiological Alterations In Rats, İbrahi̇m Akyazi, Ülker Çöteli̇oğlu
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
[D-Ala2, D-Leu5] enkephalin (DADLE), a delta opioid receptor agonist, can induce mammalian hibernation and has hibernation-like effects in non-hibernating species. It has also been demonstrated that DADLE has protective efficacy on various tissues such as nervous, cardiac, and hepatic tissues. Despite substantial research conducted in the last decade about the tissue protective efficacy of DADLE, detailed underlying mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. In the present study we investigated in a rat model whether continuous perfusion of DADLE can induce potentially tissue protective alterations in physiological parameters. In the study 48 young male Wistar rats were used. They were divided …

Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Managed Shotgun Hunts For Suburban White-Tailed Deer, Ryan D. Hubbard, Clayton K. Nielsen
Cost-Benefit Analysis Of Managed Shotgun Hunts For Suburban White-Tailed Deer, Ryan D. Hubbard, Clayton K. Nielsen
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Deer managers often utilize managed hunts to curtail burgeoning white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations in suburban areas. Although several studies have used population modeling to focus management, these efforts generally provide only harvest numbers, without considering the spatial placement of hunters on the landscape. Further, few studies have modeled management effort as deer density changes during the hunt. We modeled 2 types of managed shotgun hunts, a replacement hunt, where the stand of each successful hunter would be filled the following day, thus, ensuring the same number of hunters would be present each day of the hunt, and …

Using Stable Isotope Analysis To Quantify Anthropogenic Foraging In Black Bears, Jerod A. Merkle, Jonathan J. Derbridge, Paul R. Krausman
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Deciding whether to monitor, aversively condition, relocate, or destroy a problem black bear (Ursus americanus) can be difficult for wildlife managers. Understanding the extent of anthropogenic foraging within bear populations can provide insight for management decisions about black bears. An innovative way to estimate opportunistically the amount of anthropogenic food in an individual or a population of bears is through stable isotope analysis (SIA), where hair samples can provide an index of assimilated nutrients (i.e., diet) for the period of hair growth. Our objective was to use SIA to determine whether there was a difference between diets of …

What are the birds worth--what is their actual dollar value to human society? To most of us in the ornithological community, birds are invaluable. But in these times we need more specific rationales to convince policy makers and business leaders to include bird conservation in land-use and development decisions. Over the past two decades, awareness of our dependence on a variety of ecosystem services (natural ecological processes that benefit human society) and of their importance and prevalence has progressed toward the goal of making conservation a mainstream value. Building strategies for the protection of ecosystem services into conservation and land-use …
Effects Of Adipogenic Compounds On Growth Performance, Hormonal Status And Fat Deposition Of Finishing Beef Steers, Susanna Elizabeth Kitts
Effects Of Adipogenic Compounds On Growth Performance, Hormonal Status And Fat Deposition Of Finishing Beef Steers, Susanna Elizabeth Kitts
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Processes that regulate site of fat deposition in beef cattle are poorly understood. For the producer to procure the greatest profit, it is ideal to maximize intramuscular fat. Furthermore, to understand the physiological mechanisms affecting fat depots, it is necessary to evaluate hormones involved in growth regulation. Using a 2 x 2 factorial design of treatments, four experiments were conducted to examine two adipogenic compounds, chlortetracycline and dexamethasone. Synovex-S® and Revalor-S® were used to investigate potential interactions between growth implants and adipogenic compound. Growth performance, carcass quality, organ and fat mass and plasma hormone concentrations were measured in these studies. …

The black bear (Ursus americanus) has returned to Kentucky and is now part of a reproducing population in the southeastern Cumberland Mountain region. The broad objective of this project was to examine the interactions between people and bears, with the ultimate goal of improving bear management in a way that addresses stakeholder concerns. Using interviews of regional stakeholders, participant observation, and media reports collected between summer 2003 and fall 2006, I investigated how the presence of black bears in Harlan and Letcher counties in Kentucky has had an impact on area residents. I complemented this information with observations …

Evaluating Methods For Optimizing Classification Success From Otolith Tracers For Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) In The Chesapeake Bay, Stacy Kavita Beharry
OES Theses and Dissertations
Identifying the natal sources of fish is an important step in understanding its population dynamics. Adult recruits are often sourced from multiple nursery areas, with good quality locations contributing disproportionately more fish to the adult stock. Because population persistence is strongly influenced by nursery habitat, methods that correctly identify the source of recruits are necessary for effective management. Within the last decade, otolith chemistry signatures have been increasingly used as a natural marker to delineate fish from a mixture of nursery sources. Despite the widespread use of otolith trace element and stable isotope ratios as habitat markers, the statistical approaches …

In her review using the human Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) as an example, Dr. Chen intends to illustrate how host immune systems have evolved in response to pathogens or in many cases co-evolved with pathogens. She discusses why EBV in most people causes what appears to be a self-limiting lymphoproliferative disease (or is it? See her discussion of autoimmune diseases and EBV), but in a very small proportion of individuals the virus causes malignant diseases of severe consequence. She reviews some of the plausible explanations that may include interactions of environmental and host genetic factors resulting in EBV associated malignancies. She …

Morphological And Ultrastructural Changes In Tissues Of Intermediate And Definitive Hosts Infected By Protostrongylidae, Abdurakhim Ergashevich Kuchboev, Eric P. Hoberg
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Cellular and subcellular mechanisms involved in tissue responses to larval and adult lungworms (Protostrongylidae) were respectively explored through experimental and natural infections in molluscan intermediate (Xeropicta candacharica) and ruminant definitive hosts (Ovis aries). Reaction to developing larval stages in the gastropod is manifested as cellular infiltration involving lymphocytes and macrophages into the infected tissue, which restricts damage and may result in destruction and elimination of parasites from the intermediate host. Variations in the patterns of localization for infective third-stage larvae in the foot tissue of the intermediate host are described. In the definitive host, evaluation of lung tissue by histology …
