A left horn core of Sivaceros gradiens Pilgrim 1937 from Dhok Bun Amir Khatoon in the Lower Siwaliks of Pakistan was recovered, identified, and compared. Earlier specimens of S. gradiens excavated from the Lower Siwaliks of Pakistan were difficult to date. Conversely, the new material of S. gradiens from the Lower Siwaliks of Dhok Bun Amir Khatoon suggests an early Middle Miocene age (lower Chinji) for this species.

Contributions To The Opiinae Fauna Of Turkey (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Ahmet Beyarslan, Maximilian Fischer

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study was carried out in order to determine the species of the subfamily Opiinae in Turkey. Between 1991 and 2008, malaise and light traps and sweeping nets were used to obtain adult specimens from various habitats in Turkey. A total of 116 species from 7 genera and 28 subgenera of the Opiinae were determined, and 45 of these species were new records for the Turkish fauna. The distribution of the species was evaluated taking into consideration the zoogeographic regions and phytogeographic provinces of Turkey.

Ecology And Biology Of Scorpions In Palmyra, Syria, Adwan Hussien Shehab, Zuhair Sami Amr, Jeremy Arthur Lindsell

Near Palmyra, in the Syrian Desert, 5 species of scorpions belonging to 2 families (Buthidae and Scorpionidae) were observed; Buthacus tadmorensis, Androctonus crassicauda, Leiurus quinquestriatus, Orthochirus scrobiculosus, and Scorpio maurus palmatus. B. tadmorensis accounted for 80.6% of the total number of recovered or observed scorpions, while O. scrobiculosus was the least common (1.4%). Pitfall traps proved to be more efficient at sampling (304 individuals) than checking under stones (57 individuals). Pitfall trapping results showed that scorpion abundance differed significantly between the 3 survey areas, while their abundance showed no significant difference among the 3 areas when employing the under-stone method. …

In recent years, Alata beach has been considered to be among 20 important sea turtle nesting areas in Turkey. In the 2003 nesting season, the carapacial scute variation of 1086 Chelonia mydas hatchlings (169 dead and 917 live) and 394 Caretta caretta hatchlings (74 dead and 320 live) from Alata beach in Mersin, Turkey, were examined within carapacial scute series and in carapacial scute pattern. The rotifer fauna of Iran is poorly known. This comprehensive study presents the results of an investigation of rotifers sampled in 51 freshwater sites of Tehran and neighboring provinces of Iran, from May 2006 to May 2007. Of the 115 species identified, 72 from 19 genera and 5 families are new for the fauna of Iran. Including the present records, the number of known Iranian rotifers has now reached 143. So far, the species found in Iran are overwhelmingly Palearctic. The present study is a first step towards more similar studies to update the existing species list of rotifers from …

The results of a karyological study on the hazel dormouse Muscardinus avellanarius trapezius from Turkey were presented in this study. Using conventional staining and G- and C-banding techniques, 10 specimens were cytogenetically studied. The G- and C-banding patterns of Turkish specimens of this subspecies were provided for the first time in this study. The karyotype was composed of 2n = 46, NF = 90 and NFa = 86. A secondary constriction was visible in one pair of metacentrics (no. 9). All of the chromosomes possessed heterochromatic bands in the centromeric and pericentromeric regions. Omaloplia (Acarina) spireae spireae (Pallas, 1773) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) was first detected as a pest of sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) in Oltu, Erzurum province, in the summer of 2007. Adult O. s. spireae appeared toward the middle of July, fed on H. rhamnoides for approximately 3 weeks, and then disappeared at the end of the first week of August. They fed on the upper surface of the leaves and consumed epidermis and parenchyma tissue, mostly by making longitudinal holes of various shapes and lengths. The biodiversity of the Specially Protected Marine Area at Foca (Turkish Aegean Sea) was studied by scuba diving during October 2008. In the framework of this study the actinarian Aiptasia mutabilis (Gravenhorst, 1831) was found for the first time in Turkish waters. This new record extends the known geographical distribution of the species.

A Brief Review Of Morphological Variation In Natrix Tessellata In Israel: Between Sides, Among Individuals, Between Sexes, And Among Regions, Yehudah Leopold Werner, Tal Shapira

After introducing the distribution and biology of Natrix tessellata in Israel, on the southern edge of its range, we address its intraspecific variation from the literature and examination of 262 museum specimens. Head pholidosis showed no significant directional asymmetry, but asymmetry in infralabial plates was significantly correlated with frequency of injured tails. Variation in body size showed no clear seasonal growth, presumably due to climatic fluctuations. The variation in number of ventrals (in males, 159-173, mode 165) was not geographical. The study, conducted from May 2002 to December 2004, aimed to provide scientific baseline data about avifaunal richness, species of breeding birds, and threats that affect both bird species and ecosystems, and to support attempts to get official protection status for the Dalaman (Muğla, Turkey) wetlands. A total of 215 bird species were recorded using point counts throughout transect lines. The species' statuses were determined as follows: 56 residents, 78 summer visitors, 44 winter visitors, 22 passage migrants, and 15 undetermined. Of the 215 species, 93 (43%) were non-breeders. Added to this were data from the literature as well as data collected during our personal field studies in the central Anatolian and Mediterranean regions of Turkey between the years 2000 and 2009. Intraspecific Genetic Diversity Of The Oak Gall Wasp Andricus Lucidus (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) Populations In Anatolia, Serap Mutun

Intraspecific genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of Andricus lucidus haplotypes from Turkey were studied by PCR-RFLP analysis. A total of 26 haplotypes were detected among 144 individuals collected from 9 populations. The estimated average haplotype and nucleotide diversity within populations were 0.8089 and 0.115542, respectively. Nucleotide divergence estimates among the analyzed oak gall wasp populations ranged between 0.012% and 7.3%. Dendrograms indicated that there was a relationship between the geographical distribution of haplotypes and their clustering. AMOVA analysis for estimation of the partitioning of genetic differentiation at all different hierarchical levels was statistically significant. Analysis of variance revealed that the …

Skeletal muscle was investigated by SDS-PAGE protein electrophoresis for western versus eastern Turkish populations of the newt Ommatotriton ophryticus. The number of protein bands resolved was 25 in the west and 26 in the east. The modal number of trunk vertebrae was also compared among 10 populations of the eastern group (Artvin, Trabzon, Giresun, and Ordu) and 3 populations of the western group (Zonguldak, Bartın, and Karabük). The eastern group had 13 vertebrae except Şinik (Trabzon) specimens, which had 14 vertebrae, whereas the western group had 12 vertebrae. The genotoxic effects of sublethal doses of cadmium in peripheral erythrocytes of Oreochromis niloticus was investigated using micronucleus (MN) and nuclear abnormalities (NAs) tests. For this reason, the fish were exposed to medium changes of 0.5 and 1.0 mg/L doses of cadmium (Cd) during an average treatment period of 10 days. This study is based on the G-banding karyotype of 2 sibling bat species Myotis myotis (Borkhausen, 1797) (Greater Mouse-eared Myotis) and M. blythii (Tomes, 1857) (Lesser Mouse-eared Myotis) distributed in Turkey. G-banding karyotypes showed that the 2 taxa possessed identical G-banded chromosome arms. It was concluded that G-banded chromosomes are not sufficient as a diagnostic character for separating M. myotis from M. blythii.

The object of the study was to devise a quick and reliable method for the collection and study of lice present in birds without harm or stress being inflicted on the birds. Described is the feather ruffling collection of parasitic lice Saemundssonia australis from Chionis minor and microscopic observations thereof. A random selection of 10 free-flying Lesser Sheathbills were caught on Marion Island (46°54´S, 37°45´E) with the aid of a hand net. Approximately 10 lice from each bird were collected. The Orthoptera and Mantodea fauna of Kazdağı National Park (Balıkesir) were investigated. Field studies were conducted between 2004 and 2005. During this study, 34 species of Orthoptera (16 Tettigoniidae, 1 Oecanthidae, 2 Pamphagidae, 1 Tetrigidae, and 14 Acrididae) and 3 species of Mantodea were investigated. Isophya cania, Poecilimon luschani egrigozi, Anadolua schwarzi, Rhacocleis acutangula (Tettigoniidae), Paranocaracris rubripes burri (Pamphagidae), and one recently described species, Chorthippus (Glyptobothrus) kazdaghensis (Acrididae), are endemic taxa. During the summer (July-August) of 2007, a total of 23 freshwater ostracods belonging to 14 genera were collected from 50 out of 90 different bodies of water in Diyarbakır. Of these 23 finds, Herpetocypris intermedia is a new report for Turkish ostracod fauna. In addition, 11 species (Ilyocypris decipiens, I. inermis, Eucypris virens, Herpetocypris brevicaudata, Psychrodromus fontinalis, Isocypris beauchampi, Potamocypris similis, P. unicaudata, P. arcuata, Limnocythere stationis, and L. inopinata) are reported from this city for the first time. Calotes versicolor specimens were divided into 2 groups of equal quantity (groups A and B). Group A was injected daily with 0.1 mL/50 g bw of vehicle. A New Species Of Westralianus Boucek 1988 (Hymenoptera:Torymidae: Megastigminae) From Turkey, Mi̇kdat Doğanlar

A new species of the Australian genus Westralianus Boucek (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea, Torymidae) is described from Altınözü, Hatay, Turkey. Some new diagnostic characters of the genus are provided by inclusion of a second species in the genus. The new species, W. altinoezus n.sp., is compared with the type species, W. microstigma Boucek 1988. The new species was recorded as a parasitoid of caterpillars of an unknown species of Lepidoptera living in galls of Gymnosporangium confusum (Uredinales: Pucciniaceae) on shoots of Crataegus monogyna Jacq. A description of the new species is provided and its diagnostic characters are photographed.

Bark Beetle Fauna (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) Of The Coniferous Forests In The Mediterranean Region Of Western Turkey, With A New Record For Turkish Fauna, Oğuzhan Sarikaya, Mustafa Avci

Scolytinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) species and their host plants of coniferous forests of the Mediterranean region of Western Turkey were determined between 2006 and 2008. A total of 27 species of Scolytinae were collected from 59 different sites in Afyonkarahisar, Antalya, Burdur, Denizli, Isparta, and Muğla provinces. Hylastes angustatus (Herbst), H. linearis Erichson, Tomicus destruens (Wollaston), Hylurgus ligniperda (Fabricius), Pityogenes calcaratus (Eichhoff), P. pennidens Reitter, Orthotomicus robustus (Knotek), and O. suturalis (Gyllenhal) were recorded as new species for the Scolytinae fauna of the Mediterranean region of Western Turkey. Orthotomicus robustus (Knotek) was recorded for the first time from Turkey.

Lecanid Rotifers (Rotifera: Monogononta: Lecanidae) From Iran, Esmat Khaleqsefat, Shahrokh Pashaei Rad, Reza Malekzadeh Viayeh

Rotifer diversity was investigated in 26 bodies of water in northwest Iran. Thirteen species of Lecanidae were identified, 6 of which are new records for Iran. The new records include Lecane flexilis (Gosse 1886), L. hamata (Stokes 1896), L. hastata (Murray 1913), L. lamellata (Daday 1893), L. papuana (Murray 1913), and L. punctata (Murray 1913). Drawings are provided, and both the seasonal and spatial distributions of the identified taxa are discussed. A brief comparison is made between the present study's results and those reported from Turkey.

Based on the study of specimens from the type locality, Kervillea (Kervillea) ancyrana Bergevin, 1918 is restored as a valid species and a valid type species of the genus Kervillea Bergevin, 1918. Hysteropterum parvissimum Dlabola, 1957 is synonymized with K. (K.) ancyrana Bergevin, 1918. K. (K.) ancyrana Bergevin, 1918 and Kervillea (Kervillea) placophora (Horvath, 1905) are redescribed and figured based on the examination of the materials from Turkey.

Contributions To The Agromyzidae (Diptera) Fauna Of Turkey, Emi̇ne Çikman, Mitsuhiro Sasakawa

Three new species are described: Ophiomyia quadrispinosa sp. nov., Metopomyza lingulata sp. nov., and Pseudonapomyza multicostata sp. nov. Five species are recorded from Turkey for the first time: Melanagromyza provecta (de Meijere), Liriomyza lutea (Meigen), L. periorbita Hendel, Phytomyza veronicicola Hering, and P. wahlgreni Rydén. All species were collected from Elazığ and Malatya provinces in 2007 and 2008. The general distribution and a description of each species are presented.
