Corn milling co-products are expected to increase dramatically in supply as the ethanol industry expands. Distillers grains, corn gluten feed, or a combination of both co-products offer many feeding options when included in pasture and feedlot diets. These co-product feeds may effectively improve cattle performance and operation profitability. When these co-products are fed in feedlot diets, adjustments to grain processing method and roughage level may improve cattle performance. Innovative storage methods for wet co-products and the use of dried co-products offer small operations flexibility when utilizing co-products. As new co-products are developed by ethanol plants, they should be evaluated with …

A 2-yr experiment was conducted to compare carcass characteristics and meat palatability attributes of steers (³⁄₄ British, ¹⁄₄ Continental) finished postweaning as calves or yearlings. Calves and yearlings of the same contemporary group were designated to a finishing system at weaning. Calves (n = 73) were finished in the feedlot (191 d) on a high-concentrate diet. Yearlings (n = 84) grazed crop residues after weaning, followed by spring and summer pasture grazing, and concluded with a short finishing period (91 d) in the feedlot. The widespread use of the set of multiple- trait derivative-free REML programs for prediction of breeding values and estimation of variance components has led to significant improvement in traits of economic importance. The initial version of this software package, however, was generally limited to pedigree- based relationships. With continued advances in genomic research and the increased availability of genotyping, relationships based on molecular markers are obtainable and desirable. The addition of a new program to the set of multiple-trait derivative-free REML programs is described that allows users the flexibility to calculate relationships using standard pedigree files or an arbitrary relationship …

Beef knuckles (n = 60) were chosen from a population of 328 knuckles to test a selection procedure and determine the potential causes of liver-like off-flavor. In phase I, 2 independent panelists were allowed to smell the aromas or smell and taste samples of cooked beef to determine the presence or absence of the liver-like off-flavor and off-flavor intensity. The panelists tested knuckles from 5 feedlots, but only identified 29 as having an off-flavor. A kappa statistic was generated to assess the level of agreement of the 2 panelists that indicated the panelists moderately or substantially agreed when judgments were …

Thirty-nine lactating Holstein cows (23 multiparous and 16 primiparous) were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 dietary treatments in a crossover design. Dietary treatments differed by the proportion of corn bran [10, 17.5, and 25% dry matter (DM); designated as low, medium, and high] replacing corn silage and alfalfa. The corn bran coproduct contained 8.2% moisture and 12.9% crude protein, 30.4% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and 45.0% nonfiber carbohydrate, 9.9% ether extract, and 0.70% P (DM basis). One primiparous and 3 multiparous lactating Holstein cows fitted with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design to determine the efficacy of adding urea to a corn silage-based diet on ruminal fermentation and microbial protein synthesis. Dietary treatments were 0, 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9% urea in diet dry matter (DM); urea was manually top dressed and incorporated into the ration. The basal diet contained (DM basis) 52% forage (with 61% of forage provided as corn silage) and 48% concentrate ingredients. The ability of grazing animals to enhance quality of diet by selection is important in production. The study determined the effects of selection on dietary quality of cattle grazing monocultures of smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss; SB), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.; SG), and big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman; BB) as influenced by plant maturity. Three ruminally-fistulated steers (295 kg) strip-grazed SB, SG, and BB at vegetative, elongation, early reproductive, and a regrowth stage of development. Two experiments evaluated the inclusion of urea in distillers dried grains supplements. In Exp. 1, 60 Angus heifers (278 ± 16 kg) were individually fed diets consisting of 58% ground corn cobs, 12% sorghum silage, and 30% distillers dried grains (DM basis) in Calan electronic gates. Urea replaced distillers dried grains at 0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.2, or 1.6% of diet DM. In Exp. 2, 48 crossbred heifers were fed meadow hay ad libitum and 1.4 kg (DM) distillers dried grains to which was added either 0 or 45 g urea/ heifer daily. Calving date for 120 cows in the Nebraska Sandhills was changed from the traditional calving season beginning March 15 (d 75) to one beginning June 15 (d 167) to match increased nutrient needs for lactating cows to immature grazed forages that are high in protein and energy. The hypotheses being tested were that 1) less hay and purchased feeds would be required, 2) production costs would be reduced, and 3) net returns would be greater for June-calving cows compared with their March-calving counterparts. Ten ruminally cannulated heifers (BW = 416 kg; SD = 24) were used to test the effect of the form and frequency of supplemental energy on forage DMI and digestibility. Five treatments were arranged in a replicated, 5 × 4 Latin rectangle (n = 8), and included no supplement (control), dry-rolled corn (DRC) fed daily, DRC fed on alternate days (DRC-A), dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) fed daily, and DDGS fed on alternate days (DDGS-A). The effects of road crossings on fish communities have been extensively studied; yet little attention has been given to macroinvertebrate communities. This study evaluated physical stream characteristics, water quality, and aquatic-insect richness from above and below road crossings of low-order streams in the Ouachita National Forest in Arkansas. Fifteen road crossings were sampled during October and November 2005. Erosion was significantly higher below road crossings than above. Sites downstream of road crossings had significantly lower pH and significantly higher turbidity than sites upstream of road crossings. Swamp rabbits (Sylvilagus aquaticus) are found in bottomland hardwood ecosystems that have canopy gaps dispersed throughout. During annual flooding of these ecosystems, swamp rabbits often are displaced to adjacent uplands or higher ground within the bottomlands. Trapping of swamp rabbits is reported to be best during times of flooding. We examined habitat characteristics at trap sites to identify the best suits of habitat characters to target when trapping for swamp rabbits during flooding conditions. We documented the distribution of the queen snake, Regina septemvittata, in northern Arkansas during the 2005 and 2006 activity seasons. Arkansas currently contains the only known disjunct population of this species west of the Mississippi River. Field work was conducted throughout the Boston Mountains of the Ozark Plateau to verify the presence of queen snakes from historic localities as well as to identify new localities containing these snakes. Seventeen individuals were found in the Mulberry River of Franklin and Johnson counties and the Illinois Bayou watershed of Pope County. Of these 17 snakes, 5 were kept as voucher specimens in …

The Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) and Bam Swallow (Hinmdo rustica) both are migratory species that, in Arkansas, were known to nest only in the northern part of the state until the mid to late 1900s. The construction of concrete bridges apparently provided suitable nesting structure for both species. I conducted a survey of bridges along highways in southern Arkansas to look for evidence of nesting by these species. Nests of CliffSwallows were found in AsWey, Bradley, Clark, Cleveland, Hempstead, Hot Spring, Howard, Lafayette, Lincoln, Little River, Miller, Nevada, Ouachita, Pike, Sevier, and Union Counties. The status of jackrabbit (Lepus spp.) populations throughout the Northern Great Plains has been a cause for concern by wildlife managers in recent years and there has been a paucity of information about the ecology of the white-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus townsendii) and the black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) in South Dakota. Since there have been little monitoring efforts for hares, 21 permanent spotlight line transects were established across South Dakota for future surveying efforts. These transects were surveyed to obtain baseline information about jackrabbit density and distribution throughout the state. The Northern Goshawk (Accipiter genii/is) is a large forest raptor in the northern hemisphere that preys on small to medium-sized birds and mammals in mature forests (Squires and Reynolds 1997). Because forest structure and composition in the southwest have undergone significant change since pre-settlement times due to fire suppression, timber harvesting, livestock grazing, mining, and recreational use (Reynolds et al. 1992), the goshawk has been listed as a Forest Service sensitive species for Region 4, which includes the Dixie National Forest in Utah. This ranking dictates that for all actions on the Forest, effects to the species must be addressed. …

This study was conducted to identify Eimeria species in goats in 5 districts of Iğdır province in Turkey. Faecal specimens (approximately 3-5 g) were obtained from the rectums of 212 goats. In the laboratory examination of faecal samples, 10 different Eimeria species were identified in 82.55% of the specimens: E. arloingi (47.43%), E. christenseni (45.14%), E. ninakohlyakimovae (36.00%), E. alijevi (26.85%), E. hirci (23.42%), E. caprina (18.28%), E. caprovina (16.57%), E. pallida (13.14%), E. jolchijevi (10.28%), and E. apsheronica (3.42%). E. caprina and E. caprovina are reported for the first time in the Iğdır province of Turkey.

Aspects of the population dynamics of the Egyptian sole, Solea aegyptiaca, which is a commercially important endemic and demersal flatfish species in the Egyptian Mediterranean waters, were described based on materials collected monthly between February 2004 and May 2005 from the fishing harbor at Port Said city. Age and growth studies based on sagittal otoliths revealed that this species is relatively fast growing with a maximum age of 4 years. Marginal increment analysis suggested that bands on sagittae are deposited once a year during the winter. Mean back-calculated total lengths ranged from 17.75 cm at age I to 28.22 cm …

This study was conducted on cows in the estrual and luteal phases of the cycle to determine the staining properties, light and electron microscopic appearance and numerical distribution of mast cells from various areas of the ovary. The material for the study comprised ovarian specimen taken from 14 cows, 7 in the luteal phase and 7 in the estrual phase of the sexual cycle. Specimens were taken from 3 different areas of the ovaries, including those surrounding the corpus luteum, the graafian follicle and the medulla. Four steers (BW 1281±28.2 lb) were used to determine the relationship of plasma ghrelin concentrations with end-products of carbohydrate fermentation and hormones and metabolites indicative of nutrition status during a 12-h feeding interval. A common high-energy diet was offered at 240% of the intake necessary for BW maintenance (2.4xM) or 80% of the intake necessary for BW maintenance (0.8xM). Four steers (BW 1281±28.2 kg) were used in a crossover design to determine the effects of prolonged, moderate energy and protein restriction on plasma ghrelin and GH concentrations. A common high-energy diet was offered at 240% of the intake necessary for BW maintenance (2.4xM) or 80% of the intake necessary for BW maintenance (0.8xM). As a common starting point, all steers were adjusted to 2.4xM during a 23-d pre-trial adaptation period. Growth parameters and mortality rates of the Barbus tauricus escherichi population inhabiting in Yeşildere Stream were investigated. In particular, age and size distributions, asymptotic growth, and mortality rates by age group classes were estimated. A total of 304 B. t. escherichi specimens were sampled between June 2001 and July 2002. The population consisted of 5 age classes (i.e. 0 to IV) with minimum and maximum sizes of 5 cm to 23 cm in total length. Maturity And Fecundity Of Spiny Dogfish (Squalus Acanthias L., 1758) In The Eastern Black Sea, Sefa Ayhan Demi̇rhan, Kadi̇r Seyhan

The maturity and fecundity of Squalus acanthias spiny dogfish sampled from the south-eastern Black Sea were studied. Age and length at 50% maturity were 10.49 years and 87.57 cm for males, and 11.99 years and 102.97 cm for females, respectively. Mean biennial fecundity was 19.4 eggs and 12.9 pups. A linear relationship between fecundities and length was found: F_e = 0.09 x TLp + 2.12 (r = 0.5) for pups and F_o = 0.27 x TLp - 21.59 (r = 0.7) for eggs.

This study was carried out to determine the ornithofauna of Lake Karakuyu, which is located in the Inner-West Toros surroundings of the Lakes Region and in Dinar district of Afyonkarahisar province. The study area is an artificial lake and it has Wildlife Protection Area status. During the study period from August 2004 to July 2005, a total of 74 bird species belonging to 31 families were observed in the area.
