The growth and survival of acid-adapted and nonadapted Escherichia coli O157:H7 were determined in strained, set-type, and synbiotic yoghurt and kefir. Acid-adapted or nonadapted E. coli O157:H7 were inoculated into the synbiotic and set-type yoghurt before and after the fermentation process. Survival of the inoculated E. coli O157:H7 in these products was examined during storage at 4 °C. Acid adaptation enhanced the survival of E. coli O157:H7 in kefir and strained yoghurt. Acid adaptation also enhanced the survival of E. coli O157:H7 in set-type yoghurt, which was inoculated after the fermentation process; however, acid-adapted cell inoculation before fermentation did not …

The study included 10 clinically healthy calves (group 1) and 10 clinical cases of dermatophytosis (group 2). The influence of dermatophytosis on some serum biochemical profiles and the antioxidant system was investigated. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), uric acid, nitric oxide (NO), total sialic acid (TSA), lipid-bound sialic acid (LBSA), total protein (TP), and albumin levels were measured in groups 1 and 2. Calves in group 2 had significantly higher (P < 0.001) MDA, NO, TSA, and LBSA levels, and a higher P < 0.01 TSA:TP ratio; however, GSH and uric acid levels were significantly lower (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the groups in total protein and albumin. These findings suggest a relationship between dermatophytosis, the antioxidant system, and lipid oxidation.

This study was conducted to investigate the coagulase gene polymorphism of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from subclinical bovine mastitic milk samples from 3 different Turkish cities (Hatay, Gaziantep, and Burdur). Amplification of the coagulase gene from 80 S. aureus isolates produced 5 different polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products; 79 isolates showed only 1 amplicon, and 1 isolate showed 2 amplicons. The isolates were grouped into 9 genotypes by analysing the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the gene; the 2 most common genotypes accounted for 73.8% of the isolates. A male pinscher dog weighing 4.2 kg with a history of intermittent fever, inappetence, weight loss, and weakness occurring periodically for 5 months showed Anaplasma (Ehrlichia) platys inclusions within the platelets of peripheral blood smears. The diagnosis was confirmed using a nested polymerase chain reaction. The dog was treated with doxycycline at a dose of 5 mg/kg twice daily for 21 days. This study is the first case of A. platys infection in Turkey.

An Anatolian wild sheep (Ovis orientalis anatolica) from a wild ruminant farm near Kırıkkale, Turkey, was necropsied. Parasitic nodules were situated beneath the pleura of the caudodorsal lobes of the lungs. First stage larvae of Cystocaulus ocreatus were detected both in bronchial fluid and in lung paraffin sections. Clinical and parasitological examinations of the other animals (4 dwarf goats and 3 wild sheep reared on the same farm) were also performed. Protein and amino acid requirements of the Greater rhea (Rhea americana) have been estimated from growth data available for this species, and assumptions derived with other closely related species. Differences in body weight and growth pattern caused considerable higher protein and amino acid requirements for males compared to females after 3 months of age. Whereas the absolute protein requirement is comparable between males (148 g/day) and females (144.5 g/day) at 50 days of age, 21.8 g/day protein is needed by males at 500 days of age compared to 12.2 g/day for females. Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) has greatly expanded its historical range in the western United States. Management plans for the species have focused on curtailing its encroachment into sagebrush and grassland communities. These plans often include burning or other methods of elimination. These methods may result in subdivision or fragmentation of existing juniper stands. We initiated a study at Dugway Proving Ground, a U.S. Army facility, to examine the effects of fragmentation on the reproductive success of Utah juniper in isolated populations. Differential classical conditioning of the gill-withdrawal response (GWR) in Aplysia can be elicited by training in which a conditioned stimulus (CS) delivered to one side of the siphon (the CS+) is paired with a noxious unconditioned stimulus (US; tail shock), while a second conditioned stimulus (the CS-), delivered to a different siphon site, is unpaired with the US. NMDA receptor(NMDAR) activation has been shown previously to be critical for nondifferential classical conditioning in Aplysia. The impact of alcohol-induced suppression on hepatic gluconeogenesis (HGN) after chronic ethanol consumption between males and females is unknown. To determine the effects of chronic alcohol consumption (8 weeks) on HGN, the isolated hepatocyte technique was used on 24 h fasted male and female Wistar rats. Livers were initially perfused with collagenase and the hepatocytes were isolated. Aliquots of the cell suspension were placed in Krebs-Henseleit buffer and incubated for 30 min with lactate, [U-C-14]lactate, and nine different concentrations of ethanol (EtOH). The efficacy of using 0.01% chlorophacinone on steam-rolled oat (SRO) groats applied in CA alfalfa by spot-baiting/hand baiting around burrow entrances (~11.5 g) to control free-ranging Belding's ground squirrels (Spermophilus beldingi) were compared in 6 randomly assigned square treatment units (TUs). Four TUs were given the rodenticide and 2 treated with placebo bait. Each TU was a 0.4 ha square surrounded by a similarly treated 5.5 ha square buffer zone. Here we present information on the conservation status of ruffed lemurs (Varecia) north of the Bay of Antongil in northeastern Madagascar. Two contiguous protected areas were recently established that traverse this region via blocks of forest connected by narrow forest corridors: the Masoala National Park, which expands further to the east, and the Makira Protected Area, which expands further to the west and northwest. The two extant ruffed lemurs, Varecia variegata and V. rubra, overlapped in this region historically and, on rare occasions, hybridized. Porcine buccal mucosa is found to be very similar to human oral mucosa in structure and function.
