From quinua crop residue it is possible to obtain byproducts that can be used to feed small animals, especially guinea pigs. These byproducts can become an alternative feed to ameliorate food deficiencies generally present in the Altiplano. This study compared the effect of consumed quinua meal rations on guinea pig body weight increase and food and economic conversion. This project was developed in two phases: pre-experimental and experimental. In the first phase, genetic material appropriate for the project and the initial rations for consumption was acquired. The second phase included the experimental design where the treatments were developed. The study …

Glucocorticoid Hormone Levels Increase With Group Size And Parasite Load In Cliff Swallows, Samrrah A. Raouf, Linda C. Smith, Mary Bomberger Brown, John C. Wingfield, Charles R. Brown Jan 2006

Glucocorticoid Hormone Levels Increase With Group Size And Parasite Load In Cliff Swallows, Samrrah A. Raouf, Linda C. Smith, Mary Bomberger Brown, John C. Wingfield, Charles R. Brown

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Animals often cope with adverse events by releasing glucocorticoid hormones, which in turn promote increased energy assimilation. In captive animals, crowding also leads to increased glucocorticoid activity, probably because of increased levels of social competition. We investigated how group size and ectoparasite infestations affected endogenous levels of the glucocorticoid hormone, corticosterone, in colonial cliff swallows, Petrochelidon pyrrhonota, in southwestern Nebraska, USA. Parasites were removed from some colonies by fumigating nests. Baseline levels of corticosterone in breeding adults varied significantly with whether parasites were present, colony size (measured by total number of active nests at a site), and nesting stage. …

Physical And Health Assessment Of A Population Of Raccoon (Procyon Lotor) In Northeastern Florida, Eric C. Munscher Jan 2006

Physical And Health Assessment Of A Population Of Raccoon (Procyon Lotor) In Northeastern Florida, Eric C. Munscher

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to study the potential negative effects that mesopredators have on their environment and to promote control of mesopredator populations. Overabundant predatory species such as the raccoons (Procyon lotor) and Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana) can have significant pernicious effects on populations of autochthonous prey species, particularly when super predators such as the red wolf (Canis rufus) and Florida panther (Felis concolor coryii) are absent. These overabundant species, coined as mesopredators, are often responsible for extreme levels of predation on prey species and/or their young. The mesopredator release hypothesis involves the "release" or increased density of …

Evaluation Of A Plasmid Delivery System For Production Of Gnrh And Ghrh In The Horse And Goat, William Andrew Storer Jan 2006

Evaluation Of A Plasmid Delivery System For Production Of Gnrh And Ghrh In The Horse And Goat, William Andrew Storer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The efficacy of a novel plasmid delivery system was assessed for long-term expression of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) in horses and goats. The efficacy of the technology was demonstrated using 3 novel plasmids: pSEAP [expressing secreted embryonic alkaline phosphatase (SEAP)], pGHRH (expressing GHRH), and pGnRH (expressing GnRH). Geldings were electroporated with a reporter plasmid expressing SEAP in 3 muscle sites. Expression of SEAP, measured from jugular plasma samples, indicated muscle specificity for uptake and expression of the plasmid. Concentrations of SEAP were greatest (P < 0.05) after pectoralis injection, which was chosen as the site for electroporation in subsequent studies. In a second experiment, stallions were electroporated with pGHRH or pSEAP to evaluate the effect of long-term GHRH treatment on the growth hormone (GH) axis and testicular function. Stallions treated with pGHRH had increased (P < 0.05) plasma concentrations of IGF-I, increased (P < 0.05) volume of accessory sex gland fluid, and increased (P < 0.05) number of normal spermatozoa in the ejaculate relative to controls. In the third experiment, stallions were electroporated with pGnRH or pSEAP to test the effects of GnRH on the reproductive axis. Treatment with pGnRH increased (P < 0.05) plasma testosterone concentrations to d 56 and increased (P < 0.01) the LH response to GnRH on d 21, but did not alter (P > 0.1) seminal characteristics evaluated after 36 d of treatment. Effects Of Dietary Fluoride Levels On Growth, Serum Indexes And Antioxidant Systems In Growing Pigs, Xin Tao, Zi Rong Xu, Yi Zhen Wang

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Ninety-six growing pigs were used to evaluate the effects of fluoride levels on growth performance, serum indexes and antioxidant systems. Four dietary treatments were formulated by supplementing fluorine (as NaF) to provide the following added fluorine levels: 0, 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg. The results showed that pigs consuming diets with 100 and 150 mg/kg fluorine added had poor growth performance, and most serum biochemical indexes were significantly altered compared to the control (P < 0.05). On the other hand, serum and liver MDA concentration significantly increased due to the addition of 150 mg/kg fluorine (P < 0.05). T-AOC levels and the activities of SOD, GSH-PX, CAT and GST of serum and liver in fluoride added groups decreased, most of which altered significantly (P < 0.05). These results indicated that excessive fluoride ingestion had an adverse effect on animal health and performance.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of melatonin on hyaluronidase activity of semen and spermatozoa motility of Holstein bulls were investigation in vitro. Semen samples were divided into 5 equal parts and incubated (v/v) with melatonin at the doses of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mM for 60 min. Percentages of spermatozoa motility, morphological abnormality and hyaluronidase activity of semen were determined at 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 60 min during incubation. Results show that melatonin caused a significant (P < 0.001) decrease in the spermatozoa motility, while causing a significant increase in the hyaluronidase activities of the semen. However, there was no significant difference in the percentages of abnormal spermatozoa when compared with control samples. Doses of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mM of melatonin in bull semen decreased the percentage of spermatozoa motility in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The mean percentages of abnormal spermatozoa were not affected by melatonin treatment. However, it caused an increased hyaluronidase activity of bull semen. In conclusion, the existence of melatonin in bull semen has a significant effect on fertilization ability by affecting spermatozoa motility and hyaluronidase activity.
