This experiment was conducted to compare the nutritional value, measured by digestible and metabolizable energy, and nitrogen digestibility in young pigs fed either Roundup Ready corn (DKC5740) or non-transgenic corn (DKC5738). The experiment used 12 barrows with an initial body weight of 76.3 lb. The pigs were housed in stainless steel metabolism crates and were randomly allotted to one of two corn treatments, either Roundup Ready corn or control corn. The diets were formulated to contain 97.5% of one of the two varieties of corn and 2.5% minerals and vitamins. The duration of the experiment was 14 days, which included …

Two hundred and sixteen pigs were weaned at 14 or 21 d of age to determine the effect of weaning age and commingling after the nursery phase on growth and behavior of pigs in a wean-to-finish facility. Pigs were divided into older and younger age groups and allotted 12 pigs/pen with nine replications of each group. At the end of the nursery phase (d 34 after weaning), one-half of the pigs in each group were removed and commingled for the grower/finisher phase and the other half remained in their original pens. Information regarding the impact of sulfur amino acids (SAA) on hepatic homocysteine (Hcy) flux through the various metabolic pathways competing for Hcy in young broilers is lacking. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of varying levels of dietary methionine (Met), choline, and betaine on hepatic Hcy flux in young broiler chickens. Over the last decade, research has examined the endocrine-disrupting action of various environmental pollutants, including hormones, pharmaceuticals, and surfactants, in sewage treatment plant effluent. Responding to the growth of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and the pollutants present in their wastewater (e.g., nutrients, pharmaceuticals, and hormones), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency developed a new rule that tightens the regulation of CAFOs. In this study, we collected wild fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) exposed to feedlot effluent (FLE) and observed significant alterations in their reproductive biology. Silver-haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans) were thought only to migrate through Nebraska; however, recent surveys in eastern Nebraska report summer records of females and their young. Our study in western Nebraska also shows that silver-haired bats are summer residents. We discovered the 1st reproductively active L. noctivagans in this part of the state. We caught lactating females and volant young in riparian forests along the North Platte River and in forested areas of the Pine Ridge. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of perchlorate on the development and growth of Rana pipiens. Ammonium perchlorate is a rocket fuel oxidizer that is known to interfere with the function of the thyroid gland and some of the highest United States surface water concentration exists in the Las Vegas Wash, NV. Perchlorate not only blocks the body’s ability to incorporate iodine into T3 and T4 hormones through the sodium iodine symporter system, but also depletes the thyroid glands’ internal stores of iodine. Laboratory-Scale Evaluation Of Incandescent And Compact Florescent Lamps For Poultry House Lighting, Leanne Gabriel, Donald M. Johnson

This laboratory-scale study compared 1000- and 2000-h rated 60W incandescent lamps and 6000-h rated 60W-equivalent compact florescent lamps over 6000 h of simulated broiler-house operation. The four original 1000-h incandescent lamps were replaced 22 times and the four 2000-h incandescent lamps were replaced 14 times. None of the four compact florescent lamps failed during the 6000-h experiment, although one was broken due to human error. Both types of incandescent lamps had significantly higher (p < .0001) mean illuminance (lx) than did the compact florescent lamps. The compact florescent lamps used significantly less (p < .0001) power (W) and had significantly higher (p < .0001) efficiency (lx/W) than the incandescent lamps. Despite a higher initial purchase price, the total cost (purchase + replacement + electrical) of operating compact florescent lamps was approximately 36% lower than the total cost of operating either type of incandescent lamp over the 6000 h period. The results of this study indicate that even at a least-cost price for electricity ($0.04/kW/h), growers can reduce total broiler-house lighting costs by replacing incandescent lamps with compact florescent lamps.

The purpose of this research was to compare dietary inorganic and organic Se sources in poultry. An experiment was conducted to assess daily egg production and Se deposition in eggs of hens fed diets supplemented with inorganic or organic Se. The results from this experiment indicated that hen production was not affected by Se source, and organic Se increased egg Se concentrations more than inorganic Se. A biochemically based model was developed to simulate the growth, development, and metamorphosis of larvae of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas). The unique characteristics of the model are that it: (1) defines larvae in terms of their protein, neutral lipid, polar lipid, carbohydrate, and ash content; (2) tracks weight separately from length to follow larval condition; and (3) includes genetic variation in growth efficiency and egg quality to better simulate cohort population dynamics. The model includes parameterizations for filtration, ingestion, and respiration, which determine larval growth rate, and processes controlling larval mortality and metamorphosis. A two-dimensional Lagrangian particle model was developed to examine the spatial distribution of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba). The time-dependent location of particles, which represent krill individuals, is determined by random diffusion, foraging activity, and movement induced by the presence of neighbours. Foraging activity is based on prescribed food conditions and is such that krill swim slower and turn more frequently in areas of high food concentration. The presence or absence of neighbours either disperses krill, if the local concentrations become too dense, or coalesces krill, if concentrations become too dilute, respectively. The subfamily Tenthredininae in the family Tenthredinidae was treated in this part of the study regarding the sawfly (Symphyta, Hymenoptera) fauna of Turkey. The materials were collected from various localities around the country, though examples from eastern Turkey are predominant. After examining more than 2500 specimens, 57 species in 8 genera were recorded. Eleven species were new for Turkish fauna; of these 3 species were recorded for the first time as Asian fauna. The purpose of this study was to identify Isopoda (Crustacea) fauna at the coast of Bozcaada Island (NE Aegean Sea). Samples were collected at 20 stations in 2000 and 2001, from depths of 0-10 m, using dredges and scoop nets. Ten species were identified belonging to 4 families and 8 genera. Eight of these species were new records for the Isopoda fauna at the coast of Bozcaada Island.

The parasitic copepod Lernaeopoda galei and corresponding order Siphonostomatoida are recorded from Turkish seas for the first time. The parasites were collected from the cloacal region of Mustelus mustelus from Edremit Bay in the Aegean Sea. Descriptions of both sexes were given in detail and the differences observed in the present specimens were compared with previous descriptions of L. galei.

The homology of the antennulary segments of species belonging to some genera of Cyclopidae is determined by comparing the common setation patterns on female antennules. Comparison of the setation pattern has confirmed that there are always 44 setae and 3 aesthetascs on the female antennules of all the genera examined. This study shows that the strict application of homology is essential in order to resolve the phylogenetic relationships between the genera of Cyclopidae. Although both Ectocyclops phaleratus and Paracyclops canadensis have 11-segmented antennules, the analysis of segmental homologies has shown that the 11-segmented condition has occurred due to convergent evolution …

Two trichodina species, Trichodina puytoraci Lom, 1962 and Trichodina lepsii Lom, 1962, were identified for the first time on Mugil cephalus L., 1758 and Liza aurata Risso, 1810 caught in the Black Sea off Sinop in Turkey. Both parasite species were found to be specific for Mugilids and were not encountered on any other fish species found in the same sampling site. While the infestation prevalence (%) and mean intensity level were 100% and 188.5 ± 56.3 trichodina per infested fish, respectively, for M. cephalus, they were 40.6% and 5.46 ± 1.07 trichodina per infested fish for L. aurata. The herpetofauna of Bozdağ in western Anatolia was investigated. In the study area, 152 samples belonging to 22 species from 14 amphibian and reptile families were described. One of these species is an urodelan, 5 are anurans, 1 is a tortoise, 10 are lizards and 5 are snakes. A specimen of Eumeces schneideri was found at Bozdağ for the first time.

Spring-calving, crossbred cows were used in a three-year experiment to determine the economic efficiencies of two different beef systems. Cows were either wintered on pasture (Control System) or on cornstalks (Treatment System). Control System steers were transported to a feedlot, fed a finishing diet and slaughtered. Treatment System steers were wintered on cornstalks, grazed pasture, fed a finishing diet and slaughtered. The Treatment System had lower weaning and slaughter breakeven, lower cost per weaned calf and greater profit potential when finished steers were sold on a live basis. Profitability was similar when finished steers were sold on a grid basis.

A two-year study compared steers from the same herd finished as calves or yearlings at a fat thickness endpoint of 0.5 in. Yearlings yielded heavier carcasses with larger ribeye areas, lower marbling scores and lower quality grades. Calves produced more tender steaks measured by shear force and a consumer taste panel. The probability of a tough steak (based on shear force) from calf-fed steers was 1.9 and 0.02% for 7 and 21 days of aging, respectively, while the risk for yearlings was 29.2 and 4.0%, respectively. Basis variability was compared in 10 markets for 550 and 750 pound steers using the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) stocker and feeder indexes as a proxy for futures prices. Basis variability for 550 pound steers was significantly greater than basis variability for 750 pound steers. As market volume decreased and as volume variability increased, basis variability also increased. The failed CME stocker contract never attracted enough volume to remain a viable contract. One possible explanation for this contract failure is the basis risk associated with it was large enough to discourage producers from using the contract to hedge calves.

Mice fed conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) lose body fat. This loss of body fat is accompanied by an increases in DNA fragmentation, indicative of apoptosis or programmed cell death. Adipose apoptosis was observed in mice fed the trans-10, cis-12 isomer or a mixture of isomers but not the cis-9,trans-11 isomer. The trans-10,cis-12 isomer also induced DNA fragmentation in preadipocytes in vitro, but not mature adipocytes. The cis-9,trans-11 CLA isomer, the predominant isomer in ruminant-derived products, was reported to induce apoptosis of cancer cells. Determining the mechanism of action of CLA will improve our understanding of body fat regulation.

A feedlot experiment was conducted to evaluate initial and terminal implant combinations in finishing steers. Implant strategies including Synovex Choice increased average daily gain and rib eye area when compared to strategies including Revalor-IS. Steers implanted initially and terminally with Synovex Choice also had increased performance compared to steers implanted initially and terminally with Revalor-IS; however, performance was not different when comparing Synovex Choice verses Revelor-IS as an initial implant (Revalor-S terminal implant). Marbling was similar across implant strategies, indicating the observed increase in performance with Synovex Choice was achieved without negatively influencing carcass quality.

Seven commercially available corn hybrids representing a range within and among kernel traits were used in a finishing trial to evaluate effects of corn kernel traits on feedlot animal performance. Average daily gain, DMI, and hot carcass weight were similar among all corn hybrids. A significant difference in feed conversion of 8.4% from lowest to highest among hybrids was observed. Kernel traits correlated with feed conversion were 1,000 grain weight, stenvert time to grind, and stenvert proportion of soft to coarse particles. Efficiency of finishing cattle gain can be significantly improved by selection of corn hybrids with more desirable kernel …

Ten ruminally cannulated heifers received no supplement, dry distillers grains (DDG) daily, DDG on alternating days, dry rolled corn daily, or corn on alternating days. Hay intake was higher for non-supplemented than for supplemented heifers. No intake differences were observed between DDG and corn-supplemented heifers. Heifers supplemented daily had higher and more consistent intakes than those in alternate-day treatments, particularly within corn-supplemented heifers. Ruminal pH and hay fiber disappearance were greater in non-supplemented heifers. Corn-supplemented heifers had slower rates of fiber disappearance than DDG-supplemented. Alternate-day energy supplementation increased intake variability compared to daily supplementation.

Thirty heifers grazing smooth bromegrass were individually supplemented with 0, 1.0, 2.1, 3.1, or 4.2 lb per head per day (DM) dried distillers grains (DDG) for 84 days to determine effects of DDG supplementation on ADG and forage intake and to determine the value of DDG in grazing enterprises. Forage intake was estimated using the 1996 NRC model. Supplementation of DDG resulted in a linear increase in ADG and decreased estimated forage intake. DDG may be an attractive forage supplement due to increased revenue from additional ADG and savings from decreased forage intake.

Data from 277 treatment means in 15 previous beef cattle studies were used to develop equations to predict net energy adjusters throughout the feeding period to better predict gain with the National Research Council’s 1996 Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle model. Early in the feeding period the net energy adjuster reduces the energy to correct for overprediction of gain and late in the feeding period the net energy adjuster increases energy to correct for under prediction of gain. The average NE adjusters were 0.88 and 1.08 for the beginning and end of the feeding period.

Forage quality testing was completed on annual forages grown during 1998 and/or 1999. Included were spring cereals, legumes and summer annuals like sorghum and millets. Using a single cut harvest system when the majority of summer annuals had produced seed heads, crude protein (CP) was generally more than 8% and total digestible nutrients (TDN) more than 63% of dry matter. Annual legumes had 12 to 18% CP and more than 63% TDN. Pearl and irrigated foxtail millets had higher crude protein levels than sorghum forages, but nitrate levels were also higher. Some mineral contents varied by location and associated management.
