Yield Traits Of Geese Of Different Origins Reared In Turkey I. Hatching Traits, Muammer Ti̇lki̇, Şeref İnal

This study was carried out to determine the hatching traits of geese of different origins reared in Turkey. In the experiment, geese were selected from different regions of Turkey, (Kars-INRA), Isparta-Armutlu, Konya-Başkuyu and Konya-Tatlıcak); 20 female and 4 male 2-year-old geese were used. Egg production was 39.4, 13.0, 11.4 and 12.6 eggs/geese, and egg laying period was 133, 75, 60 and 73 days, respectively. There were statistically significant differences between the original egg weight and hatched chick weight (P < 0.01). Egg weight loss proportions during incubation for the experimental groups were 12.92, 11.44, 11.38 and 12.22%, respectively.

The purpose of this study was to isolate Pasteurella spp and other aerobic bacterial agents from the lungs of sheep and goats with pneumonia and to identify Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica by both culture methods and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In addition, mouse pathogenecity tests were carried out on suspected P. multocida isolates. In the examination of lung samples collected from sheep, 15 (4.3%) P. multocida and 8 (2.3%) M. haemolytica strains were isolated and identified. The aim was to estimate the genetic parameters for birth and weaning weights of Turkish Merino lambs by separating direct genetic, maternal genetic and maternal permanent environmental effects. Data and pedigree information of the Turkish Merino sheep used in this study were collected at the Marmara Animal Breeding Research Institute from 1995 to 2001. Variance components for birth and weaning weights were estimated by the REML technique. Six different animal models were fitted by including or excluding maternal effects. A 1-year-old cat with a suspected abortion was brought to the clinic of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ankara University. The cat was examined because of a reoccurrence of a bloody vaginal discharge. Failure to detect a foetus by ultrasonography and the presence of an anechoic zone in the uterus revealed that there had not an abortion. Since the anechoic zone was large, it was thought that a pharmacological approach would not be successful. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Y. enterocolitica and other Yersinia species in raw ground beef samples and to determine their potential virulence. For this purpose, 61 ground beef samples purchased from 15 different butcher's shops and 3 supermarkets in Aydın province in Turkey were examined between June 2000 and January 2001. A 27.2 kb plasmid in Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis ELL23, a 32.7 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. cremoris ELC5 and a 31.1 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. cremoris ELC19 were found to determine exopolysaccharide production (Eps^+) and lactose fermentation (Lac^+) abilities at the end of conjugal transfer studies. Conjugal transfer frequencies (per donor cell) and stability rates of Lac^+/Eps^+ plasmids were determined as 1.0 x 10^{-2 }- 2.8 x 10^{-3} and 80-96%, respectively, after conjugal matings between the aggregative (Agg^+) wild type strains and Agg^+ recipient strain L. lactis subsp. lactis LLT40. Regional impacts of agricultural policies have emerged as a key concern in Turkey for both domestic reasons and because of Turkey's desire to join the European Union. This study uses a spatial equilibrium model to analyze the regional impacts of 2 alternative dairy support policies that are currently being considered: a price premium policy and a target price/deficiency payment policy. Both policies are found to exacerbate the post-1980 trend toward a greater share of milk produced in the more prosperous western regions of Turkey. Cat semen was extended with 3% and 4% glycerol containing Tris extender and frozen in (0.25 ml) straws. Spermatological characteristics were examined in post-thaw semen samples. Five tom cats aged 2-3 were used. Semen was collected by electro-ejaculator under general anesthesia (xylazine-ketamine HCl combination). On a weekly basis a total of 8 ejaculates were collected from each tom cat. Spermatozoon concentration (x10^6/ml) was determined by the hemocytometric method. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of producing chimeric bovine embryos by reaggregating blastomeres of disaggregated day 4 bovine embryos. Oocytes were obtained from a slaughterhouse. Selected oocytes were matured, fertilized and cultured in vitro. Fertilization day was taken as day 0. Blastomeres of day 4 embryos were disaggregated and then pooled together. Chimeric embryos were randomly constructed by reaggregating blastomeres in empty zonae pellucidae. Liza abu stocks from the rivers Orontes, Euphrates and Tigris were investigated using genetic and morphometric data. Allozyme electrophoresis for genetic comparison and the truss network system for morphometric comparison were simultaneously applied to the same sample set. Highly significant morphological differences were observed between the 3 Liza abu stocks. The correct classification of individuals into their original samples for morphological characters was very high (100% of individuals). The Use Of Novobiocin And Cefixime-Tellurite In Broth, And Of Cefixime-Tellurite, Salicin, Rhamnose And Mug In Agar Medium For The Detection Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In Ground Beef, Murat Gülmez, Ethem Baz, Abamüslüm Güven

We aimed to improve the selectivity of lauryl tryptose (LST) broth and HC (hemorrhagic colitis Escherichia coli strains) agar for the detection of E. coli O157:H7 in frozen ground beef samples. The selectivity of LST broth was superior to that of LST containing novobiocin (20 mg/l) (LST + n), but LST containing novobiocin, cefixime (0.05 mg/l) and tellurite (2.5 mg/l) (LST + nct) was found to be unsuitable as an enrichment medium. The sorbitol positive strains were significantly more resistant to novobiocin than were the sorbitol negative strains (P < 0.05). As a result, the enrichment of ground beef samples in a selective broth without antibiotics such as LST, and then spread plating a subsequent amount from this original enrichment culture and the first three 10-fold serial dilutions onto a rhamnose and sorbitol based selective medium such as cefixime-tellurite HC medium (CTR-HC) was found to be recommendable as a routine cultural method. Transferring the metallic sheen property of eosin methylene blue (EMB) agar to CTR-HC agar can represent an alternative to the available media, and this will shorten the analysis time by 1 day. Use of salicine or 4-methylumbelliferyl-b-D glucuronide appears unnecessary in routine cultural techniques.

The effects of spatially localized and spatially dispersed feeding patterns on the growth, size distribution and feed conversion ratio of the African catfish were investigated. Two groups of fish with an initial weight of 82.16 ± 4.80 and 82.40 ± 3.90 g were subjected to point source and scatter feeding patterns, respectively, for 2 months. Scatter fed fish reached a final mean weight of 192.69 ± 6.60 g while the mean final weight of point source fed fish was 169.67 ± 6.80 g ( P < 0.05). The specific growth rates of scatter and point source fed fish were 1.51% day^{-1} and 1.29% day^{-1}, respectively. The feed conversion ratio of scatter fed fish was 1.86 and that of point source fed fish was 2.29. The difference between the coefficient of size variation for scatter and point source fed fish was statistically insignificant (P > 0.05). This study was performed to determine the survival of Listeria monocytogenes during the manufacture and ripening of Kashar, a popular cheese in Turkey. Raw milk was inoculated at 4 different levels with L. monocytogenes serotype 4b (ca. 3, 4, 5, and 6 log cfu ml^{-1} for group 1, 2, 3 and 4 cheeses, respectively) and made into Kashar cheese using the traditional technique. The population structure, mortality and growth of the tench [Tinca tinca (L., 1758)] in Çivril Lake was investigated, using 506 fish caught with various gill nets between February 1998 and January 1999. The percentages of females and males in the population were 38.34% and 61.66%, respectively, and the overall female-male sex ratio was 1:1.61. Specimens ranged from 11.4 to 28.8 cm in fork length, and from 27.7 to 420.4 g in weight. The age distribution was I-V in the population. In this study, changes in the food component and meat yield in hot smoked tench (Tinca tinca L., 1758) were investigated. The meat yield of tench was calculated as 49.27 ± 0.76%. The Effect Of Gnrh Administration On Plasma Progesterone And Reproductive Performance In Ewes, Mehmet Aki̇f Çam, Mehmet Kuran, Erdoğan Selçuk

Two experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of GnRH administration at mating and on day 12 post-mating on the reproductive performance of Karayaka and Sakız x Karayaka (F_2) crossbred sheep. In the first experiment, ewes were allocated into a control group (K, n = 27), and groups administered 4 µg GnRH at mating (A, n = 27), on day 12 post-mating (AS, n = 30) and both at mating and on day 12 post-mating (AAS, n = 30). GnRH administration in the A and AS groups increased plasma progesterone concentrations (P < 0.01). The pregnancy rate at first mating in the AS group (86.7%) was higher than those in the ASS (66.7%), A (51.9%) and K (51.9%) groups (P < 0.01). There was no difference between the treatment groups in terms of litter sizes (1.31, 1.21, 1.21 and 1.20 for AS, K, A and ASS, respectively). In the second experiment, ewes were allocated into 2 groups, a control group (K, n = 70) and a group administered 4 µg GnRH on day 12 post-mating (AS, n = 73). In this study, the growth and viability status of Listeria monocytogenes were investigated during the ripening and storage period of sucuk (Turkish dry fermented sausage) produced using different lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum Lb 8 and L. plantarum Lb 75, Pediococcus acidilactici Lb 626, P. pentosaceus Lb 1010, L. sakei 706 and L. sakei 706-B). The purpose of this study was to identify Isopoda (Crustacea) fauna at the coast of Bozcaada Island (NE Aegean Sea). Samples were collected at 20 stations in 2000 and 2001, from depths of 0-10 m, using dredges and scoop nets. Ten species were identified belonging to 4 families and 8 genera. Eight of these species were new records for the Isopoda fauna at the coast of Bozcaada Island.

The, bighead goby is reported for the first time from the Turkish Eastern Black Sea coast in Kale (Taşlı ) Stream (Rize), Erenler Stream (Çayeli-Rize), Kantarlı Stream (Pazar-Rize), Fırtına Stream (Ardeşen-Rize), Işıklı Stream (Ardeşen-Rize), Çağlayan Stream (Fındıklı-Rize) and Yeşil Stream (Fındıklı-Rize). A total of 70 individuals from different sampling stations were caught by an electro-shocker. Systematic characteristics of this species were examined and then compared with those reported in previous studies.

Thirty adult (16 males 14 females) Rana bedriagae caralitana specimens were investigated morphologically. According to results of the morphological analysis, the Kırkgöz (Antalya), Taşkesiği (Korkuteli/Antalya) and Girdev Plateau (Elmalı/Antalya) populations were included in Rana bedriagae caralitana. Furthermore, the distribution range of R. b. caralitana was extended to the northern part of the west Mediterranean Region.

The parasitic copepod Lernaeopoda galei and corresponding order Siphonostomatoida are recorded from Turkish seas for the first time. The parasites were collected from the cloacal region of Mustelus mustelus from Edremit Bay in the Aegean Sea. The homology of the antennulary segments of species belonging to some genera of Cyclopidae is determined by comparing the common setation patterns on female antennules. Comparison of the setation pattern has confirmed that there are always 44 setae and 3 aesthetascs on the female antennules of all the genera examined. This study shows that the strict application of homology is essential in order to resolve the phylogenetic relationships between the genera of Cyclopidae. Three families (Limacidae, Agriolimacidae and Milacidae) and 7 species, (Limacus flavus, Deroceras reticulatum, Deroceras berytensis, Mesolimax brauni, Mesolimax escherichi, Milax cf. altenai and Tandonia budapestensis) were identified from Lakes Region (Isparta, Burdur, and Afyon provinces). These include 1 endemic genus with 2 species. In this study some new habitat information and morphological data of the species are given. Additionally, Deroceras reticulatum, D. berytensis and Milax cf. altenai are new records for the area.

Two trichodina species, Trichodina puytoraci Lom, 1962 and Trichodina lepsii Lom, 1962, were identified for the first time on Mugil cephalus L., 1758 and Liza aurata Risso, 1810 caught in the Black Sea off Sinop in Turkey. Both parasite species were found to be specific for Mugilids and were not encountered on any other fish species found in the same sampling site. Oligochaeta And Aphanoneura (Annelida) Fauna Of The Gediz Delta (Menemen-İzmir), Süleyman Balik, Mustafa Ruşen Ustaoğlu, Seray Yildiz

The specimens were collected from 16 stations between February 1998 and May 1999 with the aim of seasonally determining the Oligochaeta and Aphanoneura fauna of the Gediz Delta. The specimens obtained by collection of mud samples with an Ekman grab and elimination with a fine 500 µm sieve were preserved in 4% formaldehyde solution. A total of 47 species were determined, comprising 25 species from Tubificidae, 17 species from Naididae, 3 species from Enchytraeidae and 2 species from Aeolosomatidae. Seventeen of the species determined are new records for the inland water fauna of Turkey.
