This study was established on sites that had three or seven years of compost production history. Corn, wheat, barley, sorghum and alfalfa were planted in 2001. In the first year, wheat, barley and sorghum performed better than corn in the windrow areas while alfalfa did not even establish because of excessive salt in the soil. Soil electrical conductivity, K and Na in the 0-6 inch depth under windrows were high and caused soil crusting and poor germination and crop yields. Growing salt tolerant crops, such as barley, can rehabilitate sites used for composting and the process can be accelerated by …

Mice were fed conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) with or without fish oil or aspirin, which deplete tissue arachidonic acid and block arachidonic acid metabolism, respectively. Mice fed fish oil did not lose body fat when supplemented with CLA but mice fed soy oil did. Aspirin did not alter CLA-induced body fat loss. CLA may be metabolized to an isomer of arachidonic acid to induce a loss of body fat. However, this body fat loss is apparently not mediated via alteration of prostaglandin synthesis. Understanding the regulation of body fat by CLA may offer insight into the mechanisms of body fat …

A field survey of Total Reduced Sulfur (TRS) concentrations in the vicinity of beef cattle feedlots was conducted to compare field observations against current regulatory thresholds. It was observed that TRS levels in the vicinity of beef cattle feedlots are not likely to exceed current regulatory thresholds used by Nebraska. It was further noted concentration of TRS varies with air temperature and time of day. However, wet feedlot surface conditions had almost no impact upon observed TRS concentrations. Feedlots typically do not contribute significant hydrogen sulfide emissions and are unlikely to produce concentrations in excess of current Nebraska Department of …

Eighteen spring-calving heifers were paired by expected calving date and assigned to treatment. Treatments were a high undegradable intake protein supplement (CON) or one based on dry corn gluten feed (TRT). Heifers were fed to consume low-quality hay ad libitum. Supplement type did not affect body condition, milk production, or calf ADG. TRT heifers lost less weight than CON heifers. There was no effect of supplement on forage intake. Intake changed cubically with respect to calving; decreasing 17% during the three weeks prior to calving, and increasing 18% the week after calving.

Two systems for wintering pregnant, March-calving heifers were compared over two years on a commercial Nebraska ranch. The ranch’s standard management system (CON) included grazed forage, supplement and hay. The alternative system (TRT) relied on grazed forage and higher levels of supplement, with no hay. Treatment effects on weight and body condition changes differed between years. Calves nursing TRT heifers tended to gain more weight. Two-year-old pregnancy rates did not differ. Partial budget analysis suggests the TRT system reduced expense by $7 per heifer, while maintaining a high level of performance.

A metabolism trial was conducted in finishing heifers to determine if allantoin in spot urine samples could be a predictor of microbial CP (MCP) supply. When corn bran replaced high moisture corn, ruminal pH was higher and microbial efficiency and flow were greater. Estimated microbial efficiency and flow were not different for SBM compared to urea as a source of degradable protein. Daily variation in intake was reflected in MCP estimates. Within day variation for MCP estimates was consistent and small. Estimates of MCP from allantoin in spot urine samples followed NRC estimates. Results demonstrate that allantoin is an effective …

A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate performance and estimates of microbial CP (MCP) supply in high moisture corn finishing diets with corn bran addition and different sources of degradable protein. Corn bran increased intake throughout the feeding period but decreased performance after day 42. Microbial efficiency and MCP were unaffected by corn bran addition, but MCP increased with increasing urea level. Performance was increased for the first 42 days when SBM was fed relative to urea, but microbial efficiency and MCP were unaffected. Supplemental DIP level did not affect MCP estimates. To determine consumer acceptance and value of beef from various countries, 12 taste panels were conducted in each of two cities. Two pairs of beef strip steaks were evaluated - domestic versus Australian grass-fed and domestic versus Canadian. Consumers gave significantly higher scores for flavor, tenderness and overall acceptability to domestic steaks compared to Australian grass-fed steaks and Canadian steaks. A significantly higher value also was placed on the domestic samples compared to Australian grass-fed steaks ($3.68/lb versus $2.48/lb) and Canadian steaks ($3.95/lb versus $3.57/lb). The 2002 Farm Bill mandates country- of-origin labeling for beef and other items by 2004. A majority (69.2%) of consumers in Denver and Chicago preferred a fresh beef strip steak with a label guaranteeing the meat came from a U.S. animal over an unlabeled steak. On average, consumers were willing to pay 18.7% more ($0.81/lb) for labeled product. When 17 attributes were rated for their desirability when purchasing beef, country-of- origin labeling ranked ninth; “freshness” and “inspected for food safety” were the most popular selection criteria. Two experiments evaluated supplemental degradable intake protein requirements when dried distillers grains were fed as an energy source in forage-based diets. Diets were formulated to be greater than 100 g/day deficient in degradable intake protein but with excess metabolizable protein. In both experiments, no response in performance was observed when urea was added to the diet. Sufficient urea was probably recycled to correct the degradable intake protein deficiency. These studies indicate adding urea to meet the degradable intake protein requirement is not necessary when dried distillers grains are fed as an energy source in forage-based diets.

A series of total urine collections was conducted to evaluate effect of age, pregnancy and diet on creatinine excretion in heifers and cows. To test effect of age on creatinine excretion, 31 animals ranging from 5 to 104 months of age were fed a hay diet supplemented with dried distillers grains (DDG). There was no difference in creatinine excretion across age. Cows fed the same diet were sampled to determine effect of pregnancy on creatinine excretion. A trial was conducted to establish a NaCl level that maximizes intake and performance while minimizing excretion of Na to the environment. Fifty-nine individually fed yearling heifers (803 lb) were fed 113 days. NaCl was added to a corn-based feedlot diet at levels of 0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.375 and 0.5 % of diet DM. No difference in ADG, DMI or F/G were observed with different levels of NaCl. Results suggest NaCl inclusion in the diet likely is not necessary to maintain acceptable feedlot performance.

Pen cleaning frequency of feedlot pens was evaluated during the summer of 2001 and 2002. Dry matter, organic matter and nitrogen recoveries were evaluated on a per head basis. Cleaning pens monthly compared to cleaning at the end of the feeding period resulted in significantly more DM, OM and N recovered. Cleaning pens every month increased N removal by 7.0 lb per steer (49.9% increase) above manure N removed at the end of the feeding period.

The highest cost to beef cow-calf and backgrounding operations is the feeding of stored feeds in winter months. Nebraska has an abundance of corn fields available for grazing following harvest. Utilization of corn crop residue is quite effective in reducing feed costs. There are a number of important considerations associated with residue utilization. Stocking rates, diet quality, genetically modified corn, subsequent crop yields and supplementation are discussed.

Beef aged in air (dry aging) develops a different flavor profile than beef aged in vacuum bags (wet aging). This research compared wet versus dry aged beef. At similar tenderness and marbling, no differences in desirability or value were found for wet versus dry aged Choice beef. For Prime, wet aged steaks were rated more desirable in flavor, juiciness, and overall acceptability and valued more than dry aged Prime. A significant proportion (27- 30%) of consumers preferred dry aged beef and were willing to pay > $1.90/ lb more for it. Consumers can detect sensory differences in beef and are willing …

Mouse populations differing in metabolic rate have been developed through selection for high (MH) and low (ML) heat loss, along with the unselected controls (MC). Background.Severe complications may arise as a result of virus dissemination after smallpox (live vaccinia virus) vaccination, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. We developed a new mouse model for studying the effects of antiviral agents on progressive vaccinia virus infections.
Methods.Hairless mice were treated with cyclophosphamide (100 mg/kg/day) every 4 days starting 1 day before vaccinia virus exposure to wounded skin. Primary lesions progressed in severity, satellite lesions developed, and the infection eventually killed the mice.
Results.Topical treatment with 1%‐cidofovir cream (twice daily for 7 days) was much more effective in reducing the severity of primary lesions and the number of satellite …

The mole salamander, Ambystoma talpoideum, exhibits both aquatic (gilled) and terrestrial (metamorphosed) adult morphologies. Previous studies have shown the existence of body-size advantages associated with the terrestrial morph in A. talpoideum and other polymorphic salamanders (e.g., A. tigrinum). However, aquatic adult A. talpoideum mature at a younger age and often breed earlier than terrestrial adults. We tested the hypothesis that early maturation and reproduction in aquatic adults increase fitness (irrespective of body size). We reared larval A. talpoideum in mesocosms and varied the timing of hatching, with early-hatching larvae representing the offspring from early-breeding aquatic adults, and late-hatching larvae representing …

European rabbits in Australia have a significant impact on the environment and the economy. It is therefore necessary to implement control programs. In rural areas a number of methods including warren ripping and poisoning are frequently used. In urban areas though, rabbit control is not as easily accomplished because the use of many control methods is not appropriate. For example, the poison 1080 often cannot be used due to public health concerns and warren ripping cannot be used in conservation areas. This study was done in the subtropical high Andes of Ulla Ulla. Its objectives were to determine the botanical composition, nutritional value, and preferred forages in the wetlands (hydromorphic and mesico) diet, by season (dry and wet), and by botanical family (12 families). Three-hundred sixty samples were collected from 6 alpacas with esophageal fistulations, and from them nutritional value and botanical composition were determined; the latter was compared with the botanical composition of the wetlands to determine preference. The results are highly significant (p<0.01) for botanical families, interaction between season and family, interaction of wetland type and family, and interaction of the season with wetland type and family. Species from the family Juncaceae were the most consumed with 27.78%, followed by moderate consumption of Cyperaceae (21.03%), Gramineae (15.02%), and Rosaceae (12.39%). Lower consumption occurred with Umbeliferaceae and Asteraceae with 6.61% and 5.64%, respectively, and the lowest consumption was of Plantaginaceae, Scrophulariaceae, minor plants, Gentianiaceae, unidentified plants, and Ranunculaceae with 2.86%, 2.50%, 2.17%, 2.08%, 1.03%, and 0.89%, respectively. The botanical families with the greatest preference value (PV) were Gramineae (PV=6.48), Scrophulariaceae (PV=8.75), Gentianiaceae (PV=7.55), and Ranunculaceae (PV=8.16). Proportional preference was observed in Juncaceae (PV=1.49), Cyperaceae (PV= -1.72), Rosaceae (PV=1.82), and Umbeliferaceae (PV= -0.82). The Asteraceae family was classified as a forced preference (PV= -6.29). The average nutritional value of the diet shows high values: 14.69% of raw protein, 14.58% ash, 85.42% organic matter, 21.43% raw fiber, and 31.00% neutral detergent fiber. It was concluded that alpacas efficiently select their diet for nutritional value, however, consumption is not appropriate, which results in negative live weight gain, especially in the dry season. On the other hand, the plants' preference values correspond to the lowest and one of the highest is a forced preference, according to the botanical composition of the wetland, which suggests that the preferred plants are repeatedly consumed in current continual pastures, and that alpacas are forced to consume unpalatable plants. This reflects on bad CANAPAS wetlands management in Ulla Ulla. Consequently, reversing this situation implies changes in pasture management and a reduction of the animal load.

To determine visual preference and value for fresh beef steaks differing in marbling level and color, consumers in Chicago and San Francisco (n = 124 per city) evaluated two pairs of steaks in a retail case. Steaks differing in marbling level (Modest/ Moderate vs. Slight) and color (bright, cherry-red vs. dark red) were purchased at retail stores in each city. Consumers selected their preferred steak in each pair, described their selection criteria, and provided the price they were willing to pay for each of the four steaks. To determine consumer sensory acceptance and value of beef steaks differing in marbling level (high = upper ²⁄₃ USDA Choice and low = USDA Select), but similar in Warner-Bratzler shear value, consumers in Chicago and San Francisco (n = 124 per city) evaluated two matched pairs of high- and low-marbled strip steaks, and had the opportunity to participate in a silent, sealed-bid auction to purchase steaks from the same strip loins as the samples. With an increase in the number of candidate genes for important traits in livestock, effective strategies for incorporating such genes into selection programmes are increasingly important. Those strategies in part depend on the frequency of a favoured allele in a population. Since comprehensive genotyping of a population is seldom possible, we investigate the consequences of sampling strategies on the reliability of the gene frequency estimate for a bi-allelic locus. Even within a subpopulation or line, often only a proportion of individuals will be genotype tested. Soils can be non-intrusively mapped by observing similar patterns within ground-penetrating radar (GPR) profiles. We observed that the intricate and often indiscernible textural variability found within a complex GPR image possesses important parameters that help delineate regions of similar soil characteristics. Therefore, in this study, we examined the feasibility of using textural features extracted from GPR data to automate soil characterizations. The textural features were matched to a "fingerprint" database of previous soil classifications of GPR textural features and the corresponding ground truths of soil conditions. The objectives were to develop equations for predicting fat-free lean in swine carcasses and to estimate the prediction bias that was due to genetic group, sex, and dietary lysine level. Barrows and gilts (n = 1,024) from four projects conducted by the National Pork Board were evaluated by six procedures, and their carcass fat-free lean was determined. Pigs of 16 genetic groups were fed within weight groups one of four dietary regimens that differed by 0.45% in lysine content and slaughtered at weights between 89 and 163 kg. The effects offood quality, breed type and sex (ram and ewe) on Iamb growth and carcass composition, and their changes throughout growth, were measured. The three breed typeswereScottish Blackface (B; no. = 24), Suffolk (S; no. = 28) and their reciprocal crosses (X; no. 33). The lambs had free access to a nutritionally non-limiting food, H, or a bulky food, L. In the hen, heat stress (HS) disrupts shell calcification and reproductive processes, including hormone synthesis and egg production. Two studies were conducted to investigate palliative effects of exogenous estrogen or dietary vitamin D3 on Ca homeostasis and reproductive physiology during HS. Study 1: Hy-Line W36 hens were randomly assigned to thermoneutral (TN) or HS treatments and to 1 of 7 estrogen treatments: zero (control) or one Compudose 200 implant given 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, or 10 d before onset of HS. With no implant, HS reduced plasma estradiol (E2) and total Ca absorbed (CaT) by duodenal cells (P < 0.05). In TN hens with implants, plasma E2 tripled within 24 h (P < 0.05) and remained elevated (P < 0.05) through d 9. In HS hens with implants, plasma E2 rose 6-fold (P < 0.05) to equal TN+E2 concentrations and remained elevated through d 10. In TN and HS hens with implants, the rate of Ca absorption (CaTR) and CaT increased dramatically; the responses were quadratic and essentially identical. Study 2: Hy-Line W36 hens were provided diets formulated either according to NRC requirements (NRC, 1994), or with the addition of 22,000 IU/kg vitamin D3 (+VD hens). A 24-h HS episode was imposed 2 wk after initiation of the dietary regimen. Duodenal samples were collected for Ca absorption assays after the 24-h HS episode. Both CaTR and CaT in +VD hens were approximately 3-fold higher than in hens in the NVD group (P = 0.102). The results lead to the conclusion that exogenous estrogen, high levels of dietary vitamin D, or both, before a HS episode, are efficacious in alleviating at least some of the effects of HS and should be further investigated.

Breed differences for weight (CW), height (CH), and condition score (CS) were estimated from records (n 12,188) of 2- to 6-yr-old cows (n 744) from Cycle IV of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s Germplasm Evaluation (GPE) Program. Cows were produced from mating Angus and Hereford dams to Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Shorthorn, Galloway, Longhorn, Nellore, Piedmontese, and Salers sires. Samples of Angus and Hereford sires were 1) reference sires born from 1962 through 1970 and 2) 1980s sires born in 1980 through 1987.
