In a 9-month-old male German Shepherd, degenerative arthritis and incongruity of the elbow joint were observed due to premature closure of the distal radial growth plate. An obvious shortening was present in the radius and ulna, when compared to the contralateral leg. Corticotomy was carried out on the radius and an Ilizarov apparatus was applied to the leg by passing Kirschner wires through the proximal and distal fragments of the radius. Changes in the antioxidant systems of the liver tissues of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) adapted to low salinity levels (0 ‰) were investigated. Malondialdehyde levels, as a specific indicator of oxidant stress, were determined. The results indicated highly significant differences among the test and control groups (P < 0.05). Some histopathological destruction, liver weight and hepatosomatic index values were determined at high levels and, moreover, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glucose-6phosphate-dehydrogenase and malondialdehyde activities increased, while reducted glutathione levels decreased in comparison with the control group. An increase in the malondialdehyde level was determined to be an indicator of lipid peroxidation.

This study was performed on the blood samples of 7 Brown cows collected during the estrus, metestrus, diestrus and proestrus phases of the estrous cycle. We investigated whether or not there was a difference between these stages of the cycle with regard to hematologic parameters. Mean hematologic parameters determined during the period of the estrous cycles were found to be within the normal range. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of some factors on litter size fertility and pregnancy period in Morkaraman sheep as well as birth weight and survival rate in Morkaraman, Dorset Down x Morkaraman (F_1) crossbreed lambs. In the present study, 151 Morkaraman sheep of different ages, and 110 purebred and 46 crossbreed (Dorset Down x Morkaraman F_1) lambs were used as the research material. The effect of the genotype and birth weight on pregnancy period were significant (P < 0.01). However, the effects of birth type, sex of the lamb and age of the sheep were not. The effects of birth type, genotype, sex of the lamb and age of the sheep on birth weight were significant (P < 0.01). The effects of genotype, sex of the lamb and age of the sheep on the number of lambs per gestation were not significant. The effects of birth type on the survival rate of the lambs were significant (P < 0.01); on the other hand, the effects of genotype, sex of the lamb and age of the sheep on survival rate were not.

The Estimation Of Phenotypic And Genetic Parameters For Calf Birth Weight And Gestation Length Of Brown Swiss Cows Reared At The Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute, Muammer Ti̇lki̇, Şeref İnal, Mehmet Emi̇n Teki̇n, Mehmet Çolak

This study was carried out to estimate the phenotypic and genetic parameters for the gestation length and birth weight of Brown Swiss cattle reared at the Bahri Bağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute. The experimental material consisted of 891 calving records and 666 gestation length records between 1989 and 2000. The least-squares means of birth weight and gestation length were 35.6 kg and 284 days, respectively. Except for the effect of the dam's age on gestation length, all other factors investigated in this study had significant effects on both gestation length and birth weight (P < 0.05-0.001). The estimations of heritability and repeatability for birth weight were 0.10 and 0.15, respectively. Estimated repeatability for gestation length was 0.14.

Feedlot and carcass data from 1,533 weanling steers consigned to the Louisiana Calf-to-Carcass program from 1992 to 1998 were used to evaluate the influence of feeder calf grade, sire breed, and initial feedlot weight on growth and carcass traits. Each October, spring born calves were delivered to Clinton, Ruston, or Lake Charles loadout sites. Steers were identified by sire breed, tagged, weighed, assigned a feeder calf grade. Forty-six, 18, 26, and 10 percent of the steers graded large frame-thick muscle, large frame-moderate muscle, medium frame-thick muscle, and medium frame-moderate muscle, respectively. Tenderness was determined by measurement of 24 h postmortem longissimus muscle calpastatin activity (CA) and Warner-Bratzler shear force after 7 and 14 d of steak aging. Collection regime has been speculated to influence the degree of variation in %Y-CBS in bull ejaculates (Chandler et al., 1998). Experiments were designed to evaluate the effects of two collection regimes on %Y-CBS. Conventional PCR combined with gel electrophoresis and image analysis was employed to determine %Y-CBS in ejaculates from two bulls collected on 7-day intervals and two bulls on 21-day intervals. Although yogurt is not a good source of folic acid, fortification could aid in prevention of above mentioned defects. Fortification of yogurt with folic acid may or may not change its physico-chemical characteristics. Fat free sugar free yogurt was manufactured using 0, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the recommended daily allowance of 400 micrograms of folic acid. The objectives of this study were the description of changes in genetic diversity in a colony of dog guides since its founding, and the investigation of the genetics of longevity in that population. Two breeds of dog, German Shepherds (GS) and Labrador Retrievers (LR), were evaluated. There were rapid increases in average pairwise relationship in both breeds, although the average was approximately one-third higher in the GS population than in the LR population. African weakly discharging electric fish (Mormyridae) use their self-generated electric signals and electroreceptive abilities for orientation and communication in the context of courtship and territorial interactions. This paper documents socially mediated changes in the electric organ discharge (EOD) of subadult Gnathonemus petersii under non-breeding environmental conditions. Increases in EOD duration and changes in the relative phase amplitudes occurred in dominant fish during same-sex (male–male, female–female) and opposite-sex interactions. Similar changes were also observed in fish that were restricted in their physical interactions, suggesting that direct contact is not necessary to induce dominance-typical EOD waveforms. State-level Breeding Bird Survey (1980-1998) and U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics were used to test the hypothesis that changes in agricultural land use within the eastern and central U.S. have driven population trends of grassland and shrub habitat birds over the past two decades. The degree to which population trends differed between grassland and shrub habitats was evaluated with respect to migratory and nesting behavior. Grassland birds declined significantly between 1980 and 1999, but, on average, shrub habitat species did not. Grassland-breeding, long-distance migrants exhibited the strongest negative trends. The blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) plays an important economic and ecological role in estuaries and coastal habitats from the Gulf of Mexico to the east coast of North America, but demographic assessments are limited by length-based methods. We applied an alternative aging method using biochemical measures of metabolic byproducts (lipofuscins) sequestered in the neural tissue of eyestalks to examine population age structure. From Chesapeake Bay, subsamples of animals collected from the 1998-99 (n-769) and 1999-2000 (n=367) winter dredge surveys were collected and lipofuscin was measured. Pax genes encode transcription factors that are highly evolutionarily conserved and are vital for animal development. Vertebrate Pax group III genes Pax3 and Pax7 are required for proper development of muscular and central nervous systems. In their roles in muscular systems, Pax3 and Pax7 specify myoblasts (muscle progenitor cells). Pax3 is predominantly involved in embryonic myogenesis and specifies embryonic myoblasts. In contrast, Pax7 specifies adult myoblasts (muscle satellite cells), and has been demonstrated to be vital for adult muscle regeneration. In the present study, bone tumor samples obtained from 18 dogs and 21 cats from various clinics between 1986 and 2000 were clinically and pathologically examined at the Pathology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ankara. Most bone tumors examined were from 5-8-year-old dogs (43.75%) and cats (45%). A significant decrease was detected in animals over 8 years old. These tumors were observed in large breeds, mostly in German shepherd (38.4%) and Anatolian shepherd (Kangal) (15.4%) dogs. This study was carried out to determine the normal haematological and biochemical parameters of clinically healthy ostriches 1-3 years old of either sex. Red blood cells, white blood cells, haematocrit and haemoglobin values (as haematological parameters) and glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, urea, kreatinine, serum enzymes (ALP, AST, ALT, GGT, CK, amilase) (as biochemical parameters) and electrolytes (Ca, P, Mg, Zn, Cu, Na, K, Cl) levels were measured. It was concluded that the values obtained in this study could be used as reference values for ostriches.

In this study, 627 live freshwater mussels collected from the Koçkale and Pertek regions of Keban Dam Lake were examined for the presence of Salmonella spp. Homogenates prepared from the soft tissue of mussels, after pre-enrichment in Rappaport Vasilliadis, were inoculated onto Brilliant Green Phenol Red Lactose agar and Salmonella-Shigella selective media. Biochemical tests and DNA extraction were carried out on isolates suspected of containing Salmonella. Total yield of the common guitar fish was around 65%. pH, TVB-N, crude protein, moisture, crude ash and fat were 6.50-6.82, 19.87-48.62 mg/100 g, 16.63-22.63%, 75.83-79.88%, 1.00-1.65% and 0.2-0.7%, respectively.
