In this study carbon-length regression was established for Arctodiaptomus bacilliferand length-weight relationships were established for Diaphanosoma lacustris, Keratella quadrata and Filinia longiseta, which are abundant in Lake Mogan. Great individual variation was determined in the carbon and nitrogen contents of Arctodiaptomus bacillifer, Furthermore, the length-weight regressions varied greatly for the, other zooplanktonic organisms according to sampling dates and, for some, to sampling points.

In this study the ovarium, ovarian wall and oviduct of Asellus aquaticus ( A. aquaticus) (Crustacea: Isopoda) were investigated by stereomicroscopy, phase contrast microscopy and light microscopy. Long, tube-shaped, separate ovaries of A. aquaticus are located dorsolateral to the gut. The germinal zone is confined to the ventral region of the ovary as a thin band. The ovarian wall is composed of a few fibrous layers. The oviduct is located in the anterior one-third of the ovary, not in the central part. I compared rates of predation between real and artificial nests of grassland birds in order to test the impact of nest type, nest position, and egg size on predation rates. I distributed wicker avicultural baskets and realistic grass nests baited with a clay egg and either northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) or house sparrow (Passer domesticus) eggs in four Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) grasslands in east-central Illinois. Nest success averaged 86.5% for 12 days of exposure for artificial nests. This study focuses on the prevalence of heartworm and lungworms in Illinois' canid species, and the effect that they may have on condition (body weight, kidney fat, marrow fat) and reproduction (placental scars) on coyote populations. A total of 1,150 coyotes (Canis latrans), 2,269 domestic dogs, 47 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), and 2 gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) were examined. Prevalence of heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis) averaged 17.8% in coyotes, 3.0% in domestic dogs, 2.0% in red foxes, and 0% in gray foxes. The effects of the supplementation of yeast, molasses and barley to barley straw diets on the dry matter intake, digestibility and ruminal fermentation in sheep were investigated. Ten male merino sheep were used in a changeover design trial of five 30-day periods. Baker's yeast (50 g/kg straw), molasses (100g/kg straw) and barley grain (100 g/kg straw) were given either separately or in combination as supplements to barley straw. Supplementation increased the total dry matter intake by 18.2-36.8 %. Supplements given alone or in combination had no effect on dry matter and organic matter digestibility of the diet. Faecal samples of 172 diarrhoeic and 130 non-diarrhoeic cattle were examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts. The prevalence of infection in diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic cattle was 63.3% and 69.2%, respectively. The infection was prevalent in cattle over three years old, in both diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic animals. In both groups, oocyst sheeding level of (+) was the most common. Cryptosporidium-positive faecal specimens were examined for the presence of Escherichia coli K 99 and rotavirus. E. coli K 99 was isolated from the faeces of 35 (32.1%) diarrhoeic and 23 (25.5%) non-diarrhoeic animals. Rotavirus was not detected in any of the …

A case of spontaneosly ruptured splenic hemangiosarcoma with abdominal dissemination in a 12-year-old male German shepherd dog is described. At necropsy, a ruptured tumor mass was seen in the ventral region of the visceral surface of the spleen, and disseminated tumor masses were seen throughout the peritoneal cavity. Histologically, in both the primary tumor mass and dis-seminated tumor masses, atypical endothelial cells lining vascular spaces as small clefts or as cavernous channels were observed. The elemental composition of fish otoliths may represent a permanent record of the environmental conditions an individual has experienced as trace elements, incorporated into the growing surface of the otolith, reflect the physical and chemical characteristics of the ambient water.
