I studied habitat selection and reproductive success of a migratory population of Loggerhead Shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus migrans) as well as the temporal and spatial patterns of impaling exhibited by this population during the nesting season. The selection of breeding habitat was investigated at different spatial scales. Thirty-eight (67%) of 57 nests were located in osage orange (Maclura pomifera) trees. Shrike territories (area ≤ 200 m from nest site) contained significantly more pasture, fenceline, and perch sites, but less com, alfalfa, and forest than random sites. A Comparison Of Predation Rates On Real And Artificial Nests Of Grassland Birds, William B. Davison

I compared rates of predation between real and artificial nests of grassland birds in order to test the impact of nest type, nest position, and egg size on predation rates. I distributed wicker avicultural baskets and realistic grass nests baited with a clay egg and either northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) or house sparrow (Passer domesticus) eggs in four Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) grasslands in east-central Illinois. Nest success averaged 86.5% for 12 days of exposure for artificial nests. Heartworm And Lungworms In Illinois' Canids And Their Possible Effect On Coyote Condition And Reproduction, David G. Gregory

This study focuses on the prevalence of heartworm and lungworms in Illinois' canid species, and the effect that they may have on condition (body weight, kidney fat, marrow fat) and reproduction (placental scars) on coyote populations. A total of 1,150 coyotes (Canis latrans), 2,269 domestic dogs, 47 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), and 2 gray foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) were examined. Prevalence of heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis) averaged 17.8% in coyotes, 3.0% in domestic dogs, 2.0% in red foxes, and 0% in gray foxes. Domestic dogs not receiving any type of prophylactic treatment had a higher prevalence (12.5%) of heartworms than dogs on …

Primer oocytes (n=520) collected from ovaries of slaughtered cows were divided into 3 groups, and matured at 39ºC with 95-100% humidity and under a gas mixture of 5% O 2 , 5% CO 2 and 90% N 2 for 22, 24 and 26 hours. Modified Parker's Medium (MPM) supplemented with FSH and 20% ECS was used as maturation medium. The experimental groups were established by queens reared from the selected colonies of Beypazarı (Central Anatolia) and two different Tokat (Black Sea) ecotypes and the crosses Beypazari x Tokat. Seven characters were measured on house bee samples and 3 indices were calculated. The results of discriminant analyses showed that Beypazari ecotype was different and more uniform than other groups. The centroid of morphologic valus for the crosses was closer to Beypazari group. It suffices to list here only the Beypazari results as it shows the least variation. In this study, effects of praziquantel and albendazole on Coenurus cerabralis were investigated. For this purpose, 5 dogs aged 2.5-3 months and 21 akkaraman lambs aged 3-4 months were used. In the semen of the two bulls, abnormal structures, which were not identified with phase-contrast and dark-field microscopy, were observed. These samples were fixed, embedded in the plastic blocks and sectioned for examining with T.E.M. It was understood that the objects in the first sample were abnormal spermatozoa which have both head and tail anomalies. The objects in the second sample were not abnormal spermatozoa. A comparative study of the Rose Bengal test (RBT), Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and complement fixation test (CFT) was performed to analyze sera of two Awassi flocks. Flock A was composed of 215 ewes, naturally infected with brucellosis. None of the animals were vaccinated. Flock B consisted of 336 non-infected non-vaccinated ewes. In this study, 768 faecal samples were examined between June 1993-May 1994 to determine the species and the prevalence rates of Eimeriidae in the cattle of Thracia area (The European part of Turkey). The prevalence rate of eimeridosis was found to be 68%. The species determined and their prevalence rates were as follows: Eimeria bovis(34%), E.auburnensis(27%), E.zeuernii(26%), E.ellipsoiDalıs (14%), E.canadensis (12%), E.cylindrica (7.9%), E.supspherica (7.2%), E.alabamensis (4.9%), E.bukidnonensis (2.2%), E.brasiliensis (0.8%) and Isospora sp. Digestibility in vivo, in vitro and, in situ and effect on the chemical composition of barley straw following pilot-scale treatment with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were investigated A range of laboratory measurements were also verified. Laboratory methods included three estimates of digestibility in vivo, in vitro and in situ.
